While HCI scholars have examined how e-textiles serve to bridge the gender divide, there is little research into refugee, asylum seeker and low socioeconomic migrant women (WRAMs) and e-textiles. This paper presents the results of a series of two community-led participatory design workshops to study the factors that enable these women, who face intersecting barriers, to engage in STEM oriented making activities. Our findings examine A. deficit discourse and strengths-based narratives, B. bridging STEM skills into a culturally safe and tailored learning environment, C. bridging commitment through commercial viability and D. the benefits of organizational partnering to bridge skills and diverse communities. This paper makes three contributions. First, we offer a strengths-based counter narrative on the abilities, assets and motivations of WRAMs to engage in makerspaces, particularly STEM skills. Second, we offer a discussion on the implications of racial capitalism and internalized bias which limits resources, research and practice with WRAMs and consequently, technological design and production. With the rise of voice chat rooms, a gigantic resource of data can be exposed to the research community for natural language processing tasks. Moderators in voice chat rooms actively monitor the discussions and remove the participants with offensive language. However, it makes the hate speech detection even more difficult since some participants try to find creative ways to articulate hate speech. This makes the hate speech detection challenging in new social media like Clubhouse. To the best of our knowledge all the hate speech datasets have been collected from text resources like Twitter. In this paper, we take the first step to collect a significant dataset from Clubhouse as the rising star in social media industry. We analyze the collected instances from statistical point of view using the Google Perspective Scores. Our experiments show that, the Perspective Scores can outperform Bag of Words and Word2Vec as high level text features.
State-of-the-art vision-language models (VLMs) score impressively on video benchmarks yet stumble on basic visual reasoning tasks involving spatial relations, navigation, and object selection that a preschooler solves easily. We hypothesize that the explicit pedagogical structure, specifically the context-question-pause-answer cycles embedded in children's educational video, provides naturally co-aligned reasoning traces: temporally synchronized visual cues, questions, and answers that emerge only from deliberate pedagogical authoring and cannot be practically reconstructed through manual annotation at scale.
