Why do bad tools spread so easily? Whether an in-house abomination that shouldn’t have seen the light of day or a commercial, expensive bag of bugs with abominable UIs and cryptic error messages, bad tools seem to spread quicker than what logic would deem reasonable. There is something especial about badly conceived tools. The worse the tool, the faster it spreads, and the more strategically it positions itself as the cornerstone of an architecture that would collapse without it. Before you know it, the bad tool becomes irreplaceable. Can it get worse? Of course, and that’s when bad tools reach enterprise level.
Diabetes is a self-quantified chronic disease, where measuring blood sugars is the very grounds for understanding and surviving the condition. This article analyzes how people with type 1 diabetes who use continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) share their CGM data visualizations on social media platforms and develop data intimacies with other diabetics around the visual vernaculars of CGM graphs: the “flat line” ideal and the “shitty graph.” CGM graphs mediate relationships between people with type 1 diabetes and how they feel their numbers. Based on a review of posts on r/diabetes_t1 over a period of nine months (August 2022–April 2023), the authors identified and analyzed two recurring visual vernaculars in screenshots of CGM graphs and the talk that occurred around them. As “domains of affective practice,” these subreddit posts and talk around screenshots of CGM graphs mediate the “bad feelings” of diabetes and materialize the charged platform data intimacies between diabetics.
This paper theorises the discursive construction of sewerage and sewage in relation to Johannesburg’s Jukskei river. In the context of failing national and local water infrastructures, rivers in South Africa are filthier than ever and public trust in politicians is similarly polluted. We explore key moments in public discourse about sewage in the Jukskei, to consider how the visible and affective traces of faecal matter in the river speak to a broader sense of post-colonial collapse of both infrastructure and trust in those responsible for it. We argue that as both material and metaphor, shit-in-the-river serves to expose maladministration and corruption on the part of the government. But it also highlights the fragility of modernity itself as a project. In the context of massive looming water crises, huge shifts in both culture and infrastructure will be required to de-faecalise rivers specifically, and water supplies in general, in South Africa.
