Introduction: This multi-disciplinary case study details how an interactive decision support tool leverages game design to inform an international plastic pollution treaty. Design: Seeking to make our scientific findings more usable within the policy process, our interactive software supports manipulation of a mathematical model using techniques borrowed from games. These "ludic" approaches aim to enable user agency to find custom policy solutions, invite deep engagement with scientific results, serve audiences of diverse expertise, and accelerate scientific process to keep pace with intergovernmental negotiations. Implementation: Built in JavaScript and D3 with user-modifiable logic via an ANTLR domain specific language, this browser-based application offers adaptability and explorability for our machine learning results with privacy preserving architecture and offline capability. Demonstration: Policymakers and the supporting community engaged with this public simulation tool across multiple treaty-related events, investigating plastic waste outcomes under diverse and sometimes unexpected policy scenarios. Conclusion: Contextualizing our open source software within a broader line
Messenger RNA (mRNA) profiling can identify body fluids present in a stain, yielding information on what activities could have taken place at a crime scene. To account for uncertainty in such identifications, recent work has focused on devising statistical models to allow for probabilistic statements on the presence of body fluids. A major hurdle for practical adoption is that evidentiary stains are likely to contain more than one body fluid and current models are ill-suited to analyse such mixtures. Here, we construct a likelihood ratio (LR) system that can handle mixtures, considering the hypotheses H1: the sample contains at least one of the body fluids of interest (and possibly other body fluids); H2: the sample contains none of the body fluids of interest (but possibly other body fluids). Thus, the LR-system outputs an LR-value for any combination of mRNA profile and set of body fluids of interest that are given as input. The calculation is based on an augmented dataset obtained by in silico mixing of real single body fluid mRNA profiles. These digital mixtures are used to construct a probabilistic classification method (a 'multi-label classifier'). The probabilities produced
We have implemented a machine translation system, the PolyMath Translator, for LaTeX documents containing mathematical text. The current implementation translates English LaTeX to French LaTeX, attaining a BLEU score of 53.5 on a held-out test corpus of mathematical sentences. It produces LaTeX documents that can be compiled to PDF without further editing. The system first converts the body of an input LaTeX document into English sentences containing math tokens, using the pandoc universal document converter to parse LaTeX input. We have trained a Transformer-based translator model, using OpenNMT, on a combined corpus containing a small proportion of domain-specific sentences. Our full system uses both this Transformer model and Google Translate, the latter being used as a backup to better handle linguistic features that do not appear in our training dataset. If the Transformer model does not have confidence in its translation, as determined by a high perplexity score, then we use Google Translate with a custom glossary. This backup was used 26% of the time on our test corpus of mathematical sentences. The PolyMath Translator is available as a web service at www.polymathtrans.ai.
A strange gamma-ray glow at the center of the Milky Way has long sparked debate over whether it comes from hidden neutron stars or elusive dark matter。 By applying machine learning to more than a million simulated observations, researchers included photon energy data for the first time and reached a different conclusion than many earlier studies
A new quantum device can generate precisely controlled bursts of sound-like particles, or phonons, by forcing electrons through an ultra-thin crystal at extremely low temperatures。 The surprising behavior pushes beyond the limits predicted by current theories, suggesting scientists need to rethink how energy moves through advanced materials。 In the
Scientists are raising concerns that we may be overlooking evidence of extraterrestrial life even when it is present。 Hidden biosignatures, limitations in detection technology, and assumptions about what life should look like can all create dangerous false negatives。 The researchers say future missions should focus not only on finding life, but als
A decades-old puzzle about water has finally been unraveled。 Researchers found that water trapped in tiny nanoscale spaces is not inherently more reactive。 Instead, the intense pressures created inside these microscopic gaps explain most of the effect, while the surrounding material can further enhance water's chemistry if it interacts with the rea
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured a spectacular red, white, and blue view of one of the Milky Way's oldest star clusters to celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary。 Hidden within the ancient cluster are clues to how exploding stars helped transform the young universe into one capable of forming planets and, eventually, life
What if consciousness isn’t limited to brains like ours。 Philosophers Eric Schwitzgebel and Jeremy Pober argue that consciousness could arise in many different forms of life, even in beings built from radically different materials than those found on Earth。 Drawing on the vastness of the universe and the likely existence of countless alien civiliza
NASA’s Lucy spacecraft discovered that asteroid Donaldjohanson is a wobbling, peanut-shaped relic born from a violent collision and slowly reshaped by the subtle force of sunlight。 It also carries traces of ancient water, making it an important clue to the solar system’s mysterious past
Researchers have created quantum control techniques that can make a system appear to run backward in time。 By precisely managing quantum measurements, they can reshape the system's arrow of time and even harvest energy from the measurement process itself。 The breakthrough could lead to more powerful quantum computers, quantum batteries, and other a
A rare meteorite has revealed evidence of a massive lost world that once orbited the young Sun before being destroyed in a catastrophic collision。 The discovery suggests some early planets formed from dramatically different materials than Earth and Mars, rewriting part of the solar system’s origin story

A major breakthrough in quantum technology has turned magnons, tiny magnetic waves once considered too short-lived for practical use, into promising carriers of quantum information。 Researchers extended their lifetime by nearly 100 times, reaching up to 18 microseconds, and discovered that the main limitation is not a law of physics but the purity
