Launched in 1964, the Journal of the Korean Society of Radiology (JKSR) has served as the official journal of the Korean Society of Radiology (KSR). However, with establishment of the Korean Journal of Radiology (KJR), an entirely English journal, in 2000 and listing of the KJR in the SCI(E), KJR has become the representative academic journal of the KSR. Therefore, the identity of JKSR needs to be restructured, and a questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the status and the future direction of the JKSR. The survey was conducted in September 2018 with 10 questions through on-line and mobile, and 553 members gave responses. According to the survey results, about 75% of the respondents read more than one JKSR article a year, mostly through on-line. All types of papers, including original article, case report, and review article were being read. The most common reason for contributing articles to the JKSR was submission for the radiology board examination, and the most common reason for not contributing articles to the JKSR was non-recognition of the publication in JKSR as achievement in universities because JKSR is not indexed in SCI(E). Many respondents were hoping for dealing with continuous medical education and health policies in radiology as the future role of JKSR. Based on these surveys, we plan to reorganize JKSR in 2019, which we would like to introduce in this paper.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the completeness of the reporting of systematic reviews and meta-analyses published in a general radiology journal using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: were analyzed. Completeness of the reporting of main texts and abstracts were evaluated using the PRISMA 2020 statement. For each item in the statement, the proportion of studies that met the guidelines' recommendation was calculated and items that were satisfied by fewer than 80% of the studies were identified. The review process was conducted by two independent reviewers. RESULTS: Of the 42 items (including sub-items) in the PRISMA 2020 statement for main text, 24 were satisfied by fewer than 80% of the included articles. The 24 items were grouped into eight domains: 1) assessment of the eligibility of potential articles, 2) assessment of the risk of bias, 3) synthesis of results, 4) additional analysis of study heterogeneity, 5) assessment of non-reporting bias, 6) assessment of the certainty of evidence, 7) provision of limitations of the study, and 8) additional information, such as protocol registration. Of the 12 items in the abstract checklists, eight were incorporated in fewer than 80% of the included publications. CONCLUSION: . Based on these results, we suggest a double-check list for improving the quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Authors and reviewers should familiarize themselves with the PRISMA 2020 statement and check whether the recommended items are fully satisfied prior to publication.
In this editorial, I will briefly review some of the Korean Journal of Radiology (KJR) activities in 2022, and give a glimpse of what the readers and authors may expect for 2023.Looking back at 2022, KJR experienced a significant increase in the two-year journal impact factor (JIF), published annually by Clarivate Analytics, from 3.5 to 7.109, which may be the first (if not the most important) thing that comes to mind of many people.Unlike its name, JIF has multiple pitfalls as an index of a journal's impact [1].Furthermore, JIF is not the only metric of scholarly citations as several other related indices exist, such as CiteScore [2], Scimago Journal Rank [3], and h-index [4].Nevertheless, in general, authors still strongly consider JIF when determining where to submit their research studies [5].Similar to KJR, substantial increases in JIF were noted across numerous journals in various fields of medicine and science, including radiology, infectious diseases, respiratory medicine, general/internal medicine, etc.While the increase in JIF may be attributed to various factors, it cannot be denied that a substantial fraction was due to the number of studies on COVID-19, as they affected acutely and massively scholarly publications and citations [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14].As the COVID-19 pandemic is now ending, and the two-year JIF is calculated by the number of citations to

Uncover This Tech Term"Uncover This Tech Term" articles are intended to serve as quick and convenient references for recent or emerging technology/technique-related terms and concepts.These may include artificial intelligence-related terms/concepts, imaging technique-related terms/concepts (e.g., new CT or MRI scan methods/sequences), statistical analysis-related terms/concepts, and more.The main goal of these articles is to provide clear and intuitive explanations of these terms and concepts, accompanied by practical examples from research studies or clinical practice.The primary objective is to help average clinical radiologists grasp these terms and concepts rapidly and effectively.

We have a new Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Seong Ho Park New section editors have also been appointed, and they will be introduced later in this article. KJR has also implemented or considers introducing other changes to improve the experience of the readers and authors.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of our study was to investigate authorship trends in radiology journals, and whether International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations have had an impact on these trends. A secondary objective was to explore other variables associated with authorship trends. METHODS: A retrospective, bibliometric analysis of 49 clinical radiology journals published from 1946-2013 was conducted. The following data was exported from MEDLINE (1946 to May 2014) for each article: authors' full name, year of publication, primary author institution information, language of publication and publication type. Microsoft Excel Visual Basics for Applications scripts were programmed to categorize extracted data. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the overall mean number of authors per article over time, impact of ICMJE guidelines, authorship frequency per journal, country of origin, article type and language of publication. RESULTS: 216,271 articles from 1946-2013 were included. A univariate analysis of the mean authorship frequency per year of all articles yielded a linear relationship between time and authorship frequency. The mean number of authors per article in 1946 (1.42) was found to have increased consistently by 0.07 authors/ article per year (R² = 0.9728, P<0.001) to 5.79 authors/article in 2013. ICMJE guideline dissemination did not have an impact on this rise in authorship frequency. There was considerable variability in mean authors per article and change over time between journals, country of origin, language of publication and article type. CONCLUSION: Overall authorship for 49 radiology journals across 68 years has increased markedly with no demonstrated impact from ICMJE guidelines. A higher number of authors per article was seen in articles from: higher impact journals, European and Asian countries, original research type, and those journals who explicitly endorse the ICMJE guidelines.
PURPOSE: To determine the characteristics and trends of the original articles published in two major American radiology journals, AJR American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) and Radiology, between 2001 and 2010. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective bibliometric analysis that did not involve human subjects and was exempt from institutional review board approval. All 6542 original articles published in AJR and Radiology between 2001 and 2010 were evaluated. The following information was abstracted from each article: radiologic subspecialty, radiologic technique used, type of research, sample size, study design, statistical analysis, study outcome, declared funding, number of authors, affiliation of the first author, and country of the first author. In addition, all the variables examined were presented along with the trend over time. RESULTS: The most common subspecialty of study was abdominal (1219 of 6542, 18.6%), followed by vascular/interventional (804 of 6542, 12.3%). A total of 3744 (57.2%) original articles used magnetic resonance (MR) imaging or computed tomography (CT), 5495 (84.1%) were clinical research articles, 3060 (46.8%) had sample size of more than 50, 4087 (62.5%) were retrospective, 4714 (72.1%) performed statistical analysis, 6225 (95.2%) showed positive study outcome, 4784 (73.1%) were not funded, 3942 (60.3%) had four to seven authors, and 5731 (87.6%) were written by the primary author who was from a department of radiology or radiology-related specialties. The United States published 45.5% (2975 of 6542) of the articles, followed by Japan (n = 525, 8.0%), Germany (n = 485, 7.4%), and South Korea (n = 455, 7.0%). In the time trend analysis, the following variables showed a significantly positive trend: cardiac subspecialty, CT and MR imaging as the radiologic techniques, type of research as other (nonbasic, nonclinical), sample size of more than 50, four to seven as the number of authors, medicine-related department of the first author, and South Korea and Italy as countries of the first author. On the other hand, pediatric subspecialty, combined (basic and clinical) type of research, and number of authors fewer than four showed a significantly negative trend. CONCLUSION: The bibliometric analysis of the AJR and Radiology journals with articles published between 2001 and 2010 revealed characteristics and trends of the current radiology research that may provide useful information to researchers and editorial staff in radiology.
Ultrasonography (renamed from the Journal of Korean Society of Ultrasound in Medicine in January 2014), the official English-language journal of the Korean Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (KSUM), is an international peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to practice, research, technology, and education dealing with medical ultrasound, Aims and Scope:Ultrasonography (renamed from the Journal of Korean Society of Ultrasound in Medicine in January 2014), the official English-language journal of the Korean Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (KSUM), is an international peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to practice, research, technology, and education dealing with medical ultrasound.It is published four times per year: January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. Original articles, topical reviews, pictorial essays, and notable case reports are published in Ultrasonography covering state-of-the-art content. Ultrasonography also serves as a medium for cooperation among physicians and specialists from around the world who are focusing on various ultrasound technology and disease problems.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine authorship trends in two leading radiology journals over the past 2 decades. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All original articles (n = 5195) published in AJR and Radiology for the periods 1991-1993, 2001-2003, and 2011-2013 were reviewed. The following variables were extrapolated from each article: number of authors, radiologic subspecialty, and country of origin. The number of authors listed per article was correlated with the publication period, journal, radiologic subspecialty, and country of origin. RESULTS: The mean number of authors per article increased from 5.1 in 1991-1993 to 6.2 in 2001-2003 and to 7.1 in 2011-2013 across both journals (p < 0.0001). Both AJR and Radiology had statistically significant increases in the number of authors per article over time, but the number of authors per article in Radiology was significantly higher than that in AJR (p < 0.0001 for all study periods). The number of authors per article significantly increased for all radiologic subspecialties. The mean numbers of authors per article by country of origin are as follows: Italy, 8.3; Japan, 7.6; France, 7.5; Germany, 7.4; China, 7.3; Austria, 7.2; and South Korea, 6.8. These were significantly higher than the mean number of authors from Switzerland, which was 6.3. CONCLUSION: The number of authors significantly and consistently increased in two leading radiology journals over the past 2 decades.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the publication rate of abstracts presented by Korean investigators at national and international radiological meetings, and to identify predictive factors of publication. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Abstracts presented at the annual meetings of the Korean Radiological Society (KRS), and abstracts presented by Korean investigators at the annual meetings of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and European Congress of Radiology (ECR) from 2001 to 2002 were searched for subsequent publication, using PubMed and the Korean Medical Database. The following variables were evaluated. 1) The overall publication rate; 2) the publication rates according to the radiological subspecialty, presentation type (oral or poster), sample size (< or = 20, 21-50, or > 50), study design (prospective or retrospective), statistical analysis (present or absent), and study outcome (positive or negative); 3) the time to publication; 4) the journal where the study was published; 5) consistency between the abstract and the final publication. RESULTS: Of 1,097 abstracts, 301 (27.4%) were subsequently published, at an average of 15.8 +/- 13.8 months after presentation in 48 journals. The publication rates for studies presented at the RSNA (35.4%) and ECR (50.5%) conferences were significantly higher than that for the KRS conference (23.6%, p < 0.05). Vascular/interventional radiology studies had the highest publication rate (33.1%), whereas musculoskeletal radiology studies had the lowest publication rate (17.1%). Other factors associated with subsequent publication were prospective design, use of statistical testing, and a positive study outcome. CONCLUSION: The publication rate is significantly lower for the KRS (23.6%) meeting abstracts as compared to those of the RSNA (35.4%) and ECR (50.5%). Prospective design, use of statistical testing, and positive study outcome have a statistically significant effect on the publication rate.
Incidental thyroid nodules are commonly detected on ultrasonography (US). This has contributed to the rapidly rising incidence of low-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma over the last 20 years. The appropriate diagnosis and management of these patients is based on the risk factors related to the patients as well as the thyroid nodules. The Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology (KSThR) published consensus recommendations for US-based management of thyroid nodules in 2011 and revised them in 2016. These guidelines have been used as the standard guidelines in Korea. However, recent advances in the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules have necessitated the revision of the original recommendations. The task force of the KSThR has revised the Korean Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System and recommendations for US lexicon, biopsy criteria, US criteria of extrathyroidal extension, optimal thyroid computed tomography protocol, and US follow-up of thyroid nodules before and after biopsy. The biopsy criteria were revised to reduce unnecessary biopsies for benign nodules while maintaining an appropriate sensitivity for the detection of malignant tumors in small (1-2 cm) thyroid nodules. The goal of these recommendations is to provide the optimal scientific evidence and expert opinion consensus regarding US-based diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules.
BACKGROUND: In 2015, the second cycle of the CONCORD programme established global surveillance of cancer survival as a metric of the effectiveness of health systems and to inform global policy on cancer control. CONCORD-3 updates the worldwide surveillance of cancer survival to 2014. METHODS: CONCORD-3 includes individual records for 37·5 million patients diagnosed with cancer during the 15-year period 2000-14. Data were provided by 322 population-based cancer registries in 71 countries and territories, 47 of which provided data with 100% population coverage. The study includes 18 cancers or groups of cancers: oesophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, lung, breast (women), cervix, ovary, prostate, and melanoma of the skin in adults, and brain tumours, leukaemias, and lymphomas in both adults and children. Standardised quality control procedures were applied; errors were rectified by the registry concerned. We estimated 5-year net survival. Estimates were age-standardised with the International Cancer Survival Standard weights. FINDINGS: For most cancers, 5-year net survival remains among the highest in the world in the USA and Canada, in Australia and New Zealand, and in Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. For many cancers, Denmark is closing the survival gap with the other Nordic countries. Survival trends are generally increasing, even for some of the more lethal cancers: in some countries, survival has increased by up to 5% for cancers of the liver, pancreas, and lung. For women diagnosed during 2010-14, 5-year survival for breast cancer is now 89·5% in Australia and 90·2% in the USA, but international differences remain very wide, with levels as low as 66·1% in India. For gastrointestinal cancers, the highest levels of 5-year survival are seen in southeast Asia: in South Korea for cancers of the stomach (68·9%), colon (71·8%), and rectum (71·1%); in Japan for oesophageal cancer (36·0%); and in Taiwan for liver cancer (27·9%). By contrast, in the same world region, survival is generally lower than elsewhere for melanoma of the skin (59·9% in South Korea, 52·1% in Taiwan, and 49·6% in China), and for both lymphoid malignancies (52·5%, 50·5%, and 38·3%) and myeloid malignancies (45·9%, 33·4%, and 24·8%). For children diagnosed during 2010-14, 5-year survival for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia ranged from 49·8% in Ecuador to 95·2% in Finland. 5-year survival from brain tumours in children is higher than for adults but the global range is very wide (from 28·9% in Brazil to nearly 80% in Sweden and Denmark). INTERPRETATION: The CONCORD programme enables timely comparisons of the overall effectiveness of health systems in providing care for 18 cancers that collectively represent 75% of all cancers diagnosed worldwide every year. It contributes to the evidence base for global policy on cancer control. Since 2017, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has used findings from the CONCORD programme as the official benchmark of cancer survival, among their indicators of the quality of health care in 48 countries worldwide. Governments must recognise population-based cancer registries as key policy tools that can be used to evaluate both the impact of cancer prevention strategies and the effectiveness of health systems for all patients diagnosed with cancer. Sonazoid, a second-generation ultrasound contrast agent, was introduced for the diagnosis of hepatic nodules. To clarify the issues with Sonazoid contrast-enhanced ultrasonography for the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the Korean Society of Radiology and Korean Society of Abdominal Radiology collaborated on the guidelines. The guidelines are de novo, evidence-based, and selected using an electronic voting system for consensus. These include imaging protocols, diagnostic criteria for HCC, diagnostic value for lesions that are inconclusive on other imaging results, differentiation from non-HCC malignancies, surveillance of HCC, and treatment response after locoregional and systemic treatment for HCC.
