In a recent arXiv post, Hawkins & Garcia-Bellido raised doubts on the results of 20-yr long OGLE photometric monitoring, which did not find a large number of gravitational microlensing events in the direction of the Magellanic Clouds. These results implied that primordial black holes and other compact objects with masses from 10^{-8} to 10^3 M_solar cannot comprise a substantial fraction of the Milky Way dark matter halo. Unfortunately, the Hawkins & Garcia-Bellido post contained a number of scientific misrepresentations of our work. Here, we demonstrate that their arguments lack a solid basis or are simply incorrect. As we show below, "and yet they are not found" - compact objects (including primordial black holes) in the dark halo of the Milky Way remain undetected, despite extensive searches.
The popularity of pulsating stars resides in their capacity of determining several crucial and relevant parameters such as heliocentric distances, ages, metallicity gradients and reddening. RR Lyrae stars are old stellar tracers and have been detected in nearly all nearby galaxies that have been searched for these stars, with just a few exceptions of very low mass dwarfs. Less common but also of great importance are Anomalous Cepheids, indicators of either old or intermediate-age population, depending on their stellar origin. Classical Cepheids are only found within young stellar populations, and because of their brighter absolute magnitudes, they can be detected in galaxies farther than the Local Group. This paper presents a concise review built upon the aforementioned pulsating stars in Local Group dwarf galaxies and some of their applications to infer important properties of their host galaxies.
In this work, we search the OGLE-IV outer Galactic bulge fields for short-period variable objects. The investigation focuses on unexplored timescales roughly below one hour in an area containing about 700 million stellar sources down to approximately I=20 mag. We concentrate mainly on Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs), which represent a recently discovered enigmatic class of short-period hot subluminous stars. We find 33 BLAPs in the period range from 7.5 to 66.5 min. Thirty-one of them are new discoveries, which increases the number of known stars of this class to over one hundred. Additional eighteen objects with pulsation-like light curve shapes and periods ranging from 17.3 to 53.7 min are presented. Very likely, these are $δ$ Sct/SX Phe-type stars, but some of them could be pulsating hot subdwarfs or BLAPs. We also report on the detection of five eclipsing binary systems with orbital periods between 61.2 and 121.9 min and three mysterious variable objects with I-band amplitudes larger than 0.9 mag. A spectroscopic follow-up would help in the final classification of the variables.
We present the first-ever collection of delta Scuti stars found over the entire area of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The sample consists of 2810 variables of which over 2600 objects belong to the SMC while the remaining stars are most likely members of the Milky Way's halo. The sample has been divided into 2733 singlemode and 77 multimode pulsators. We provide observational parameters (pulsation periods, mean magnitudes, amplitudes, Fourier coefficients) of all delta Sct stars and the long-term I- and V-band time-series photometric measurements collected during the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV).
We present the results of our search for nearby planetary companions of transiting hot Jupiters in 12 planetary systems: HAT-P-24, HAT-P-39, HAT-P-42, HAT-P-50, KELT-2, KELT-15, KELT-17, WASP-23, WASP-63, WASP-76, WASP-79, and WASP-161. Our analysis was based on multi-sector time-series photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and precise transit timing data sets. We detected no additional transiting planets down to the 2-4 Earth radii regime. For ten hot Jupiters, no departure from linear transit ephemerides was observed. Whilst we refute long-term variations of the orbital period for WASP-161 b, which were claimed in the literature, we notice a tentative hint of the orbital period shortening for WASP-79 b. In addition, we spot a short-period transit timing variation for KELT-2A b with the characteristics typical of the so-called exomoon corridor. We conclude, however, that further observations are required to confirm these findings.
We present results of a search for transiting exoplanets in 10-yr long photometry with thousands of epochs taken in the direction of the Galactic bulge. This photometry was collected in the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV). Our search covered approx. 222 000 stars brighter than I = 15.5 mag. Selected transits were verified using a probabilistic method. The search resulted in 99 high-probability candidates for transiting exoplanets. The estimated distances to these targets are between 0.4 kpc and 5.5 kpc, which is a significantly wider range than for previous transit searches. The planets found are Jupiter-size, with the exception of one (named OGLE-TR-1003b) located in the hot Neptune desert. If the candidate is confirmed, it can be important for studies of highly irradiated intermediate-size planets. The existing long-term, high-cadence photometry of our candidates increases the chances of detecting transit timing variations at long timescales. Selected candidates will be observed by the future NASA flagship mission, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, in its search for Galactic bulge microlensing events, which will further enhance the phot
Radio astronomy observational facilities are under constant upgradation and development to achieve better capabilities including increasing the time and frequency resolutions of the recorded data, and increasing the receiving and recording bandwidth. As only a limited spectrum resource has been allocated to radio astronomy by the International Telecommunication Union, this results in the radio observational instrumentation being inevitably exposed to undesirable radio frequency interference (RFI) signals which originate mainly from terrestrial human activity and are becoming stronger with time. RFIs degrade the quality of astronomical data and even lead to data loss. The impact of RFIs on scientific outcome is becoming progressively difficult to manage. In this article, we motivate the requirement for RFI mitigation, and review the RFI characteristics, mitigation techniques and strategies. Mitigation strategies adopted at some representative observatories, telescopes and arrays are also introduced. We also discuss and present advantages and shortcomings of the four classes of RFI mitigation strategies, applicable at the connected causal stages: preventive, pre-detection, pre-correl

A giant planet had been hiding inside one of astronomy’s most closely studied planetary systems, concealed by a bright disk of cosmic dust。 Webb revealed Beta Pictoris d through atmospheric traces of carbon monoxide, water vapor, and methane, showcasing a promising new method for finding elusive exoplanets
Dying Sun-like stars may not fade away quietly。 As blobs of gas erupt unevenly from their swollen surfaces, each burst gives the star a tiny push in the opposite direction。 Thousands of these random kicks could eventually break apart distant stellar pairs or, in rare cases, drive two stars into a violent collision

We describe an implementation of a semi-automated review system for the astrophysics literature. Registered users identify names under which they publish, and provide scores for individual papers of their choosing. Scores are held confidentially, and combined in a weighted average grade for each paper. The grade is divided among the co-authors as assigned credit. The credit accumulated by each user (their ``mass'') provides the weight by which their score is averaged into papers' grades. Thus, papers' grades and users' masses are mutually dependent and evolve in time as scores are added. Likewise, a user's influence on the grade of a paper is determined from the perceived original scientific contribution of all the user's previous papers. The implementation, called RefSponse -- currently hosted at http://bororo.physics.mcgill.ca -- includes papers in astro-ph, the ApJ, AJ, A&A, MNRAS, PASP, PASJ, New Astronomy, Nature, ARA&A, Phys. Rev. Letters, Phys. Rev. D. and Acta Astronomica from 1965 to the present, making extensive use of the NASA/ADS abstract server. We describe some of the possible utilities of this system in enabling progress in the field.
