In a 3-page ruling on July 11, Ada County District Court Judge Duff McKee chastised Idaho officials for issuing new Medicaid regulations limiting abortion coverage to the same extent as an earlier rule found unconstitutional by the court. Judge McKee opened his order by calling the new rule "a blatant and ill-concealed attempt to maintain the status quo." Invalidating the prohibition on Medicaid coverage for low-income women's abortions except when two physicians certify that continued pregnancy will result in "grave, long-lasting physical damage," Judge McKee reiterated his holding that such a measure violates the Idaho Constitution. On February 1, Judge McKee held that the state Constitution provides broader protection for the right of privacy than the federal Constitution. The court indicated that the initial Medicaid regulation conflicted with a constitutional guarantee of neutrality, which requires Idaho to be evenhanded when subsidizing the exercise of a constitutionally protected right. Plaintiffs in Roe v. Harris--represented by ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project's Louise Melling, Planned Parenthood Federation's Carole Chervin, and cooperating attorney Newal Squyres--challenged the new regulation in early July. The lawsuit was originally filed in August of 1993. An Idaho statute, which was challenged but upheld, provides Medicaid funding when two physicians certify that it is necessary to save the woman's life or health, or when a court determines the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest.

Research on the dimensional approach to personality disorders in relation to psychosocial functioning is limited, particularly among adolescents. Since adolescence is a critical developmental period from the emergence of personality disorders, it is crucial to understand how both Criterion A (the level of personality functioning) and Criterion B (maladaptive personality traits) contribute to various domains of psychosocial functioning in this age group. To address this research gap, the current study evaluated the extent to which Criterion A and Criterion B of the alternative model for personality disorders predict psychosocial functioning in community-based sample adolescents over a 1-year period, beyond the overall psychopathology and baseline levels of psychosocial functioning. The study involved 855 adolescents aged 11-18 (M = 14.44, SD = 1.60; 62.5% female) at baseline and followed up 1 year later, achieving a 94% retention rate. Measurements included the assessments of the level of personality functioning, maladaptive personality traits, overall psychopathology, academic functioning, social functioning, and well-being. The findings indicated that while both Criterion A and Criterion B are associated with lower levels of psychosocial functioning 1 year later, their contributions varied across domains. Criterion A significantly predicted functioning in social and well-being domains, while Criterion B predicted social difficulties only. Neither Criterion A nor Criterion B was significant in predicting academic functioning. Psychoticism contributed to the experience of social rebuff, while detachment was uniquely linked to a lower quality of life. The results contribute to the understanding of how dimensionally defined personality pathology affects psychosocial functioning, adding a prospective perspective during adolescence. The relationship between aggression and mate choice in mating systems is critical for understanding the evolution and diversification of sexual organisms and yet remains the subject of vigorous debate. A key challenge is that traditional correlational approaches cannot distinguish underlying mechanisms of social interaction and can indicate misleading positive associations between aggression and mating events. We implement a novel relational event model (REM) incorporating temporal dependencies of events in a social network to study natural reproductive behaviour in a lek-breeding system where males gather to display and females visit to evaluate mates, often observing both male courtship displays and fights. We find that fighting is not attractive to females. Indeed, males are less likely to start and more likely to leave fights with females present, plausibly to avoid entanglement in protracted combat cycles arising from emergent social processes that reduce availability to mate. However, fighting serves other roles, e.g. to deter copulation interruptions and rebuff competitors. Our findings support the hypothesis that social systems regulating conflict and promoting females' choice based on display are fundamental to stable lek evolution. Moreover, our analysis highlights the utility of the REM framework in testing mechanistic hypotheses in behavioural ecology and evolution.
Histological and micro-ultrasound evidence rebuffs deep-rooted views on the nature of nerve block, nerve damage, and injection pressure monitoring. We propose that the ideal position of the needle tip for nerve block is between the innermost circumneural fascial layer and outer epineurium, with local anaesthetic passing circumferentially through adipose tissue. Thin, circumferential, subepineural expansion that is invisible to the naked eye was identified using micro-ultrasound, and could account for variability of outcomes in clinical practice. Pressure monitoring cannot differentiate between intrafascicular and extrafascicular injection. High injection pressure only indicates intraneural extrafascicular spread, not intrafascicular spread, because it is not possible to inject into the stiff endoneurium in most human nerves.
