YouTube is central to contemporary mass media. However, the official YouTube API does not provide access to the full set of creators or creator metadata on the platform. This lack of basic visibility into the YouTube ecosystem hinders understanding of the platform's creator economy. Researchers currently have no easy, transparent, or replicable way to construct large-scale datasets of YouTube creators and their audiences over time. This makes it challenging to study vital social questions, such as how changes to the YouTube recommendation algorithm shape creator incentives and by extension the mass media on the platform. We address this gap with TubeCensus, a large-scale longitudinal dataset of YouTube creators and subscriber counts, constructed by collecting, linking, and organizing nearly two decades of YouTube page captures from the Internet Archive. This approach is transparent and replicable and does not require interaction with the YouTube API, whose output can change over time. We validate the coverage of TubeCensus against prior estimates of YouTube's size and find that our resource includes creators responsible for at least 30-36% of all YouTube content. We also find that
Public opinion towards the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) on YouTube social media reflects diverse community responses. This study applies the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) method to classify sentiments from 7,733 YouTube comments. The results show that the LSTM model achieves 89% accuracy, with strong performance on negative sentiment (F1-score 0.94) but weaker performance on positive sentiment (F1-score 0.55) due to class imbalance, as negative data account for 87.7% of the dataset. These findings confirm the effectiveness of LSTM for sentiment analysis of Indonesian text while highlighting the challenge of imbalanced data. The rapid growth of YouTube Shorts, now serving over 2 billion monthly users, reflects a global shift toward short-form video as a dominant mode of online content consumption. This study investigates algorithmic bias in YouTube Shorts' recommendation system by analyzing how watch-time duration, topic sensitivity, and engagement metrics influence content visibility and drift. We focus on three content domains: the South China Sea dispute, the 2024 Taiwan presidential election, and general YouTube Shorts content. Using generative AI models, we classified 685,842 videos across relevance, topic category, and emotional tone. Our results reveal a consistent drift away from politically sensitive content toward entertainment-focused videos. Emotion analysis shows a systematic preference for joyful or neutral content, while engagement patterns indicate that highly viewed and liked videos are disproportionately promoted, reinforcing popularity bias. Energy production and management face significant political, economic, and environmental challenges, yet the rise in information consumption through social media undermines the availability of reliable knowledge to the general public. This study examines the ideas discussed in the energy transition content on YouTube, assesses the most effective methods of communicating knowledge and information to the general public, and identifies the most engaged audiences. We examine videos related to the subject, analysing the themes discussed, the language used, and the emotions conveyed on YouTube, linking language formality to user engagement. To test the relationship experimentally, we uploaded original content to YouTube through two mirror channels containing the same material but using different levels of language formality. Our results indicate that conversational content reaches a broader audience, but retention rates are higher on the academic channel beyond the initial video segments. Interest in the topic varies by viewer profile, with younger individuals and women showing greater engagement regardless of language style.
Generative AI (GenAI) tools enhance social media video creation by streamlining tasks such as scriptwriting, visual and audio generation, and editing. These tools enable the creation of new content, including text, images, audio, and video, with platforms like ChatGPT and MidJourney becoming increasingly popular among YouTube creators. Despite their growing adoption, knowledge of their specific use cases across the video production process remains limited. This study analyzes 274 YouTube how-to videos to explore GenAI's role in planning, production, editing, and uploading. The findings reveal that YouTubers use GenAI to identify topics, generate scripts, create prompts, and produce visual and audio materials. Additionally, GenAI supports editing tasks like upscaling visuals and reformatting content while also suggesting titles and subtitles. Based on these findings, we discuss future directions for incorporating GenAI to support various video creation tasks.
Even for better-studied sign languages like American Sign Language (ASL), data is the bottleneck for machine learning research. The situation is worse yet for the many other sign languages used by Deaf/Hard of Hearing communities around the world. In this paper, we present YouTube-SL-25, a large-scale, open-domain multilingual corpus of sign language videos with seemingly well-aligned captions drawn from YouTube. With >3000 hours of videos across >25 sign languages, YouTube-SL-25 is a) >3x the size of YouTube-ASL, b) the largest parallel sign language dataset to date, and c) the first or largest parallel dataset for many of its component languages. We provide baselines for sign-to-text tasks using a unified multilingual multitask model based on T5 and report scores on benchmarks across 4 sign languages. The results demonstrate that multilingual transfer benefits both higher- and lower-resource sign languages within YouTube-SL-25.
With billions of users and an immense volume of daily uploads, YouTube has become an attractive target for cybercriminals aiming to leverage its vast audience. The platform's openness and trustworthiness provide an ideal environment for deceptive campaigns that can operate under the radar of conventional security tools. This paper explores how cybercriminals exploit YouTube to disseminate malware, focusing on campaigns that promote free software or game cheats. It discusses deceptive video demonstrations and the techniques behind malware delivery. Additionally, the paper presents a new evasion technique that abuses YouTube's multilingual metadata capabilities to circumvent automated detection systems. Findings indicate that this method is increasingly being used in recent malicious videos to avoid detection and removal.
This paper introduces two large-scale multilingual comment datasets, YT-30M (and YT-100K) from YouTube. The analysis in this paper is performed on a smaller sample (YT-100K) of YT-30M. Both the datasets: YT-30M (full) and YT-100K (randomly selected 100K sample from YT-30M) are publicly released for further research. YT-30M (YT-100K) contains 32236173 (108694) comments posted by YouTube channel that belong to YouTube categories. Each comment is associated with a video ID, comment ID, commentor name, commentor channel ID, comment text, upvotes, original channel ID and category of the YouTube channel (e.g., 'News & Politics', 'Science & Technology', etc.).
In light of the enduring success of music streaming services, it is noteworthy that an increasing number of users are positively gravitating toward YouTube as their preferred platform for listening to music. YouTube differs from typical music streaming services in that they provide a diverse range of music-related videos as well as soundtracks. However, despite the increasing popularity of using YouTube as a platform for music consumption, there is still a lack of comprehensive research on this phenomenon. As independent researchers unaffiliated with YouTube, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 27 users who listen to music through YouTube more than three times a week to investigate its usability and interface satisfaction. Our qualitative analysis found that YouTube has five main meanings for users as a music streaming service: 1) exploring musical diversity, 2) sharing unique playlists, 3) providing visual satisfaction, 4) facilitating user interaction, and 5) allowing free and easy access. Autocomplete is a popular search feature that predicts queries based on user input and guides users to a set of potentially relevant suggestions. In this study, we examine what YouTube autocompletes suggest to users seeking information about race on the platform. Specifically, we perform an algorithm output audit of autocomplete suggestions for input queries about four racial groups and examine the stereotypes they embody. Using critical discourse analysis, we identify five major sociocultural contexts in which racial information appears -Appearance, Ability, Culture, Social Equity, and Manner. We found that the participatory nature of YouTube produces a multifaceted representation of race-related content in its search outputs, characterized by enduring historical biases, aggregated discrimination, and interracial tensions, while simultaneously depicting minority resistance and aspirations of a post-racial society. We call for innovations in content moderation policy design and enforcement to address existing racial harms in YouTube search outputs.
YouTube is one of the most popular platforms for streaming of user-generated video. Nowadays, professional YouTubers are organized in so called multi-channel networks (MCNs). These networks offer services such as brand deals, equipment, and strategic advice in exchange for a share of the YouTubers' revenue. A major strategy to gain more subscribers and, hence, revenue is collaborating with other YouTubers. Yet, collaborations on YouTube have not been studied in a detailed quantitative manner. This paper aims to close this gap with the following contributions. First, we collect a YouTube dataset covering video statistics over three months for 7,942 channels. Second, we design a framework for collaboration detection given a previously unknown number of persons featuring in YouTube videos. We denote this framework for the analysis of collaborations in YouTube videos using a Deep Neural Network (DNN) based approach as CATANA. Third, we analyze about 2.4 years of video content and use CATANA to answer research questions providing guidance for YouTubers and MCNs for efficient collaboration strategies. Sentiment analysis using big data from YouTube videos metadata can be conducted to analyze public opinions on various political figures who represent political parties. This is possible because YouTube has become one of the platforms for people to express themselves, including their opinions on various political figures. The resulting sentiment analysis can be useful for political executives to gain an understanding of public sentiment and develop appropriate and effective political strategies. This study aimed to build a sentiment analysis system leveraging YouTube videos metadata. The sentiment analysis system was built using Apache Kafka, Apache PySpark, and Hadoop for big data handling; TensorFlow for deep learning handling; and FastAPI for deployment on the server. The YouTube videos metadata used in this study is the video description. The sentiment analysis model was built using LSTM algorithm and produces two types of sentiments: positive and negative sentiments. The sentiment analysis results are then visualized in the form a simple web-based dashboard.
Research using YouTube data often explores social and semantic dimensions of channels and videos. Typically, analyses rely on laborious manual annotation of content and content creators, often found by low-recall methods such as keyword search. Here, we explore an alternative approach, using latent representations (embeddings) obtained via machine learning. Using a large dataset of YouTube links shared on Reddit; we create embeddings that capture social sharing behavior, video metadata (title, description, etc.), and YouTube's video recommendations. We evaluate these embeddings using crowdsourcing and existing datasets, finding that recommendation embeddings excel at capturing both social and semantic dimensions, although social-sharing embeddings better correlate with existing partisan scores. We share embeddings capturing the social and semantic dimensions of 44,000 YouTube channels for the benefit of future research on YouTube: https://github.com/epfl-dlab/youtube-embeddings.
YouTube has revolutionized the way people discover and consume video. Although YouTube facilitates easy access to hundreds of well-produced and trustworthy videos, abhorrent, misinformative, and mistargeted content is also common. The platform is plagued by various types of problematic content: 1) disturbing videos targeting young children; 2) hateful and misogynistic content; and 3) pseudoscientific misinformation. While YouTube's recommendation algorithm plays a vital role in increasing user engagement and YouTube's monetization, its role in unwittingly promoting problematic content is not entirely understood. In this thesis, we shed some light on the degree of problematic content on YouTube and the role of the recommendation algorithm in the dissemination of such content. Following a data-driven quantitative approach, we analyze thousands of videos on YouTube, to shed light on: 1) the risks of YouTube media consumption by young children; 2) the role of the recommendation algorithm in the dissemination of misogynistic content, by focusing on the Involuntary Celibates (Incels) community; and 3) user exposure to pseudoscientific content on various parts of the platform and how this
YouTube is a popular video platform for sharing creative content and ideas, targeting different demographics. Adults, older children, and young children are all avid viewers of YouTube videos. Meanwhile, countless young-kid-oriented channels have produced numerous instructional and age appropriate videos for young children. However, inappropriate content for young children, such as violent or sexually suggestive content, still exists. And children lack the ability to decide whether a video is appropriate for them or not, which then causes a huge risk to children's mental health. Prior works have focused on identifying YouTube videos that are inappropriate for children. However, these works ignore that not only the actual video content influences children, but also the advertisements that are shown with those videos. In this paper, we quantify the influence of inappropriate advertisements on YouTube videos that are appropriate for young children to watch. We analyze the advertising patterns of 24.6 K diverse YouTube videos appropriate for young children. We find that 9.9% of the 4.6 K unique advertisements shown on these 24.6 K videos contain inappropriate content for young children
A large number of the most-subscribed YouTube channels target children of a very young age. Hundreds of toddler-oriented channels on YouTube feature inoffensive, well-produced, and educational videos. Unfortunately, inappropriate content that targets this demographic is also common. YouTube's algorithmic recommendation system regrettably suggests inappropriate content because some of it mimics or is derived from otherwise appropriate content. Considering the risk for early childhood development, and an increasing trend in toddler's consumption of YouTube media, this is a worrisome problem. In this work, we build a classifier able to discern inappropriate content that targets toddlers on YouTube with 84.3% accuracy, and leverage it to perform a first-of-its-kind, large-scale, quantitative characterization that reveals some of the risks of YouTube media consumption by young children. Our analysis reveals that YouTube is still plagued by such disturbing videos and its currently deployed counter-measures are ineffective in terms of detecting them in a timely manner. With its extensive range of content crea-tors and viewers, YouTube serves as a hub for video sharing, entertainment, and information dissemination. However, the exponential growth of users and their active engagement on the platform has raised concerns regarding suspicious commenter behaviors, particularly in the com-ment section. This paper presents a social network analysis-based methodology for detecting suspicious commenter mob-like behaviors among YouTube channels and the similarities therein. The method aims to characterize channels based on the level of such behavior and identify com-mon patterns across them. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model, we conducted an analysis of 20 YouTube channels, consisting of 7,782 videos, 294,199 commenters, and 596,982 comments. YouTube is the second most visited website in the world and receives comments from millions of commenters daily. The comments section acts as a space for discussions among commenters, but it could also be a breeding ground for problematic behavior. In particular, the presence of suspicious commenters who engage in activities that deviate from the norms of constructive and respectful discourse can negatively impact the community and the quality of the online experience. This paper presents a social network analysis-based methodology for detecting commenter mobs on YouTube. These mobs of commenters collaborate to boost engagement on certain videos. The method provides a way to characterize channels based on the level of suspicious commenter behavior and detect coordination among channels. To evaluate our model, we analyzed 20 YouTube channels, 7,782 videos, 294,199 commenters, and 596,982 comments that propagated false views about the U.S. Military. The analysis concluded with evidence of commenter mob activities, possible coordinated suspicious behavior on the channels, and an explanation of the behavior of co-commenter communities.
YouTube is by far the largest host of user-generated video content worldwide. Alas, the platform has also come under fire for hosting inappropriate, toxic, and hateful content. One community that has often been linked to sharing and publishing hateful and misogynistic content are the Involuntary Celibates (Incels), a loosely defined movement ostensibly focusing on men's issues. In this paper, we set out to analyze the Incel community on YouTube by focusing on this community's evolution over the last decade and understanding whether YouTube's recommendation algorithm steers users towards Incel-related videos. We collect videos shared on Incel communities within Reddit and perform a data-driven characterization of the content posted on YouTube. Among other things, we find that the Incel community on YouTube is getting traction and that, during the last decade, the number of Incel-related videos and comments rose substantially. We also find that users have a 6.3% chance of being suggested an Incel-related video by YouTube's recommendation algorithm within five hops when starting from a non Incel-related video. In recent time, YouTube has evolved into a powerful medium for social interaction. Utilizing YouTube for enhancing marketing endeavors is a strategy practiced by marketing professionals across several industries. This paper rationalizes on the different ways and means of leveraging YouTube-based platforms for effective destination marketing by the hospitality industry (hotels). More specifically, the typology of virtual communities is adapted to evaluate the YouTube platform for effective destination marketing. Comments made by YouTube users have been subjected to a content analysis and the results are reported here under the five broad clusters of virtual communities. Implications for utilizing YouTube-based community interactions for destination marketing are also highlighted as part of the outcome of this research.
