In this paper, we are interested in pose estimation of animals. Animals usually exhibit a wide range of variations on poses and there is no available animal pose dataset for training and testing. To address this problem, we build an animal pose dataset to facilitate training and evaluation. Considering the heavy labor needed to label dataset and it is impossible to label data for all concerned animal species, we, therefore, proposed a novel cross-domain adaptation method to transform the animal pose knowledge from labeled animal classes to unlabeled animal classes. We use the modest animal pose dataset to adapt learned knowledge to multiple animals species. Moreover, humans also share skeleton similarities with some animals (especially four-footed mammals). Therefore, the easily available human pose dataset, which is of a much larger scale than our labeled animal dataset, provides important prior knowledge to boost up the performance on animal pose estimation. Experiments show that our proposed method leverages these pieces of prior knowledge well and achieves convincing results on animal pose estimation.
3D animal reconstruction in the wild remains challenging due to large species variation, frequent occlusions, and the prevalence of multi-animal scenes, while existing methods predominantly focus on single-animal settings. We present SAM 3D Animal, the first promptable framework for multi-animal 3D reconstruction from a single image. Built on the SMAL+ parametric animal model, our method jointly reconstructs multiple instances and supports flexible prompts in the form of keypoints and masks which enable more reliable disambiguation in crowded and occluded scenes. To train such a model, we further introduce Herd3D, a multi-animal 3D dataset containing over 5K images, designed to increase diversity in species, interactions, and occlusion patterns. Experiments on the Animal3D, APTv2, and Animal Kingdom datasets show that our framework achieves state-of-the-art results over both existing model-based and model-free methods, demonstrating a scalable and effective solution for prompt-driven animal 3D reconstruction in the wild.
Animal habitat surveys play a critical role in preserving the biodiversity of the land. One of the effective ways to gain insights into animal habitats involves identifying animal footprints, which offers valuable information about species distribution, abundance, and behavior. However, due to the scarcity of animal footprint images, there are no well-maintained public datasets, preventing recent advanced techniques in computer vision from being applied to animal tracking. In this paper, we introduce OpenAnimalTracks dataset, the first publicly available labeled dataset designed to facilitate the automated classification and detection of animal footprints. It contains various footprints from 18 wild animal species. Moreover, we build benchmarks for species classification and detection and show the potential of automated footprint identification with representative classifiers and detection models. We find SwinTransformer achieves a promising classification result, reaching 69.41% in terms of the averaged accuracy. Faster-RCNN achieves mAP of 0.295. Animals capable of powered flight range in wingspan from a few hundred microns to a few meters. The inertial turbulence to which these animals are exposed features vortices ranging from a few hundred micrometers to hundreds of kilometers in size. Yet, the impact of ambient turbulence on animal flight is virtually uncharted and most studies on animal flight are conducted in still air or under laminar conditions. Here, we propose a novel parameterization that links animal flight with turbulence, through a proxy for the energy injected into the atmosphere, $E_{sp}=b^3 f^2$, with $f$ the animal's flapping frequency and $b$ the wingspan. We model this parameter using a scaling relation in the shape of a power law $E_{sp} \propto k^α$, with $k=1/b$ the wavenumber corresponding to the animal inverse wingspan. Literature provides four theoretical predictions on the exponent $α$: two connected to aerodynamic and energetic aspects of flight, $α_{aero}=-2$ and $α_{power}=-5/3$, and two linked to physiological limits. Multi-animal tracking is crucial for understanding animal ecology and behavior, yet remains challenging due to variations in habitat, motion patterns, and species appearance. Traditional approaches typically require extensive fine-tuning and heuristic design for each new scenario. In this work, we explore vision foundation models for zero-shot multi-animal tracking. Building on SAM2MOT, we combine Grounding DINO with the Segment Anything Model2 (SAM 2) and introduce three targeted modifications to adapt the framework to animal appearance and behavior without any retraining or hyperparameter tuning between datasets. We also evaluate the recent SAM3 model, but identify practical limitations that restrict its applicability to multi-animal tracking in the wild. Our method achieves state-of-the-art results across Chimp-Act, Bird Flock Tracking, AnimalTrack, and a subset of GMOT-40, demonstrating robust generalization across diverse species and environments. Individual animal recognition can be useful in the search for lost or stolen pets, the tracking of individuals of endangered species, and the recognition of animals in crowded farms. Present recognition techniques mostly use physical devices, e.g., microchips, often impractical and difficult to apply. These could be replaced by remote recognition via the animal's face; if accurate enough, it provides several advantages: it is non-invasive, can work at a distance, and is difficult to counterfeit, as, for instance, in the case of substituting sick animals for healthy ones in the food industry. The few existing datasets with sufficient per-subject images annotated with a single animal identity are not large enough to train current deep learning architectures. We rather investigate the possibility of transfer learning, exploiting pre-trained network models as backbones. Our experiments compared FaceNet, which is specifically trained on large databases of human faces, with the Vision Transformer (ViT) pre-trained on ImageNet, i.e., on object categories. We present Claw AI Lab, a lab-native autonomous research platform that advances automated research from a hidden prompt-to-paper pipeline into an interactive AI laboratory. Rather than centering the system around a single agent or a fixed serial workflow, we allow users to instantiate a full research team from one prompt, with customizable roles, collaborative workflows, real-time monitoring, artifact inspection, and rollback/resume control through a unified dashboard. The platform also supports distinct research modes for exploration, multi-agent discussion, and reproduction, making autonomous research substantially more steerable and laboratory-like in practice. A key practical contribution of Claw AI Lab lies in its Claw-Code Harness, which connects local codebases, datasets, and checkpoints to runnable experiments and feeds execution artifacts back into the research loop. Camera-based animal re-identification (Animal Re-ID) can support wildlife monitoring and precision livestock management in large outdoor environments with limited wireless connectivity. In these settings, inference must run directly on collar tags or low-power edge nodes built around microcontrollers (MCUs), yet most Animal Re-ID models are designed for workstations or servers and are too large for devices with small memory and low-resolution inputs. We propose an on-device framework. First, we characterise the gap between state-of-the-art Animal Re-ID models and MCU-class hardware, showing that straightforward knowledge distillation from large teachers offers limited benefit once memory and input resolution are constrained. Second, guided by this analysis, we design a high-accuracy Animal Re-ID architecture by systematically scaling a CNN-based MobileNetV2 backbone for low-resolution inputs. Third, we evaluate the framework with a real-world dataset and introduce a data-efficient fine-tuning strategy to enable fast adaptation with just three images per animal identity at a new site. Quantitative analysis of animal behavior and biomechanics requires accurate animal pose and shape estimation across species, and is important for animal welfare and biological research. However, the small network capacity of previous methods and limited multi-species dataset leave this problem underexplored. To this end, this paper presents AniMer to estimate animal pose and shape using family aware Transformer, enhancing the reconstruction accuracy of diverse quadrupedal families. A key insight of AniMer is its integration of a high-capacity Transformer-based backbone and an animal family supervised contrastive learning scheme, unifying the discriminative understanding of various quadrupedal shapes within a single framework. For effective training, we aggregate most available open-sourced quadrupedal datasets, either with 3D or 2D labels. To improve the diversity of 3D labeled data, we introduce CtrlAni3D, a novel large-scale synthetic dataset created through a new diffusion-based conditional image generation pipeline. Our paper aims to generate diverse and realistic animal motion sequences from textual descriptions, without a large-scale animal text-motion dataset. While the task of text-driven human motion synthesis is already extensively studied and benchmarked, it remains challenging to transfer this success to other skeleton structures with limited data. In this work, we design a model architecture that imitates Generative Pretraining Transformer (GPT), utilizing prior knowledge learned from human data to the animal domain. We jointly train motion autoencoders for both animal and human motions and at the same time optimize through the similarity scores among human motion encoding, animal motion encoding, and text CLIP embedding. Presenting the first solution to this problem, we are able to generate animal motions with high diversity and fidelity, quantitatively and qualitatively outperforming the results of training human motion generation baselines on animal data. Additionally, we introduce AnimalML3D, the first text-animal motion dataset with 1240 animation sequences spanning 36 different animal identities. Animal pose estimation is a fundamental task in computer vision, with growing importance in ecological monitoring, behavioral analysis, and intelligent livestock management. Compared to human pose estimation, animal pose estimation is more challenging due to high interspecies morphological diversity, complex body structures, and limited annotated data. In this work, we introduce DiffPose-Animal, a novel diffusion-based framework for top-down animal pose estimation. Unlike traditional heatmap regression methods, DiffPose-Animal reformulates pose estimation as a denoising process under the generative framework of diffusion models. To enhance semantic guidance during keypoint generation, we leverage large language models (LLMs) to extract both global anatomical priors and local keypoint-wise semantics based on species-specific prompts. These textual priors are encoded and fused with image features via cross-attention modules to provide biologically meaningful constraints throughout the denoising process. Additionally, a diffusion-based keypoint decoder is designed to progressively refine pose predictions, improving robustness to occlusion and annotation sparsity. Extensive experiments
Recently, there has been a surge of interest in applying deep learning techniques to animal behavior recognition, particularly leveraging pre-trained visual language models, such as CLIP, due to their remarkable generalization capacity across various downstream tasks. However, adapting these models to the specific domain of animal behavior recognition presents two significant challenges: integrating motion information and devising an effective temporal modeling scheme. In this paper, we propose AnimalMotionCLIP to address these challenges by interleaving video frames and optical flow information in the CLIP framework. Additionally, several temporal modeling schemes using an aggregation of classifiers are proposed and compared: dense, semi dense, and sparse. As a result, fine temporal actions can be correctly recognized, which is of vital importance in animal behavior analysis. Experiments on the Animal Kingdom dataset demonstrate that AnimalMotionCLIP achieves superior performance compared to state-of-the-art approaches.
Rises in the number of animal abuse cases are reported around the world. While chatbots have been effective in influencing their users' perceptions and behaviors, little if any research has hitherto explored the design of chatbots that embody animal identities for the purpose of eliciting empathy toward animals. We therefore conducted a mixed-methods experiment to investigate how specific design cues in such chatbots can shape their users' perceptions of both the chatbots' identities and the type of animal they represent. Our findings indicate that such chatbots can significantly increase empathy, improve attitudes, and promote prosocial behavioral intentions toward animals, particularly when they incorporate emotional verbal expressions and authentic details of such animals' lives. These results expand our understanding of chatbots with non-human identities and highlight their potential for use in conservation initiatives, suggesting a promising avenue whereby technology could foster a more informed and empathetic society.
Accurate animal pose estimation is an essential step towards understanding animal behavior, and can potentially benefit many downstream applications, such as wildlife conservation. Previous works only focus on specific animals while ignoring the diversity of animal species, limiting the generalization ability. In this paper, we propose AP-10K, the first large-scale benchmark for mammal animal pose estimation, to facilitate the research in animal pose estimation. AP-10K consists of 10,015 images collected and filtered from 23 animal families and 54 species following the taxonomic rank and high-quality keypoint annotations labeled and checked manually. Based on AP-10K, we benchmark representative pose estimation models on the following three tracks: (1) supervised learning for animal pose estimation, (2) cross-domain transfer learning from human pose estimation to animal pose estimation, and (3) intra- and inter-family domain generalization for unseen animals. The experimental results provide sound empirical evidence on the superiority of learning from diverse animals species in terms of both accuracy and generalization ability. Introductory electricity and magnetism lab manual was designed to use with virtual Physics II class. The lab manual consists of experiments on electrostatics, electric potential and energy, current and resistance, DC circuits, electromagnetism, and AC circuits. Virtual experiments were based on simulations. Open educational resources (OER) were used for all experiments. Virtual experiments were designed to simulate in-person physical lab experiments. Special emphasis was given to computational data analysis with excel. Formatted excel sheets per each lab were given to students and step by step calculation in excel were explained during the synchronous class. Learning management system (LMS) was used to fully web enhance the lab class. Virtual labs were delivered by using live video conference technology and recorded lab sessions were added to LMS. Lab class were tested with both virtual delivery methods (synchronous and asynchronous). Student learning outcomes (understand, apply, analyze and evaluate) were studied with detailed lab reports and end of the semester lab-based written exam which confirmed the virtual lab class was as effective as the in-person physical lab class.
Understanding animals' behaviors is significant for a wide range of applications. However, existing animal behavior datasets have limitations in multiple aspects, including limited numbers of animal classes, data samples and provided tasks, and also limited variations in environmental conditions and viewpoints. To address these limitations, we create a large and diverse dataset, Animal Kingdom, that provides multiple annotated tasks to enable a more thorough understanding of natural animal behaviors. The wild animal footages used in our dataset record different times of the day in extensive range of environments containing variations in backgrounds, viewpoints, illumination and weather conditions. More specifically, our dataset contains 50 hours of annotated videos to localize relevant animal behavior segments in long videos for the video grounding task, 30K video sequences for the fine-grained multi-label action recognition task, and 33K frames for the pose estimation task, which correspond to a diverse range of animals with 850 species across 6 major animal classes. The research topic of digital twins has attracted a large amount of interest over the past decade. However, publicly available exemplars remain scarce. In the interest of open and reproducible science, in this exemplar paper we present a lab-scale gantry crane and its digital twin. The exemplar comprises both the physical and digital side of the twin system. The physical side consists of the physical crane and its controller. The digital side covers the CAD models and kinematic model of the crane, and provides services for optimal control, historical data logging, data visualization and continuous validation. We used this setup as use case in several previous publications where its functionality was validated. It is publicly available and only relies on other freely available and commonly used software, this way we hope it can be used for future research or education on the topic of digital twins.
The nuclear equation of state (EOS) serves as the fundamental bridge between atomic nuclei and neutron stars--objects that differ in size by almost 20 orders of magnitude. Central to this connection is the nuclear symmetry energy, which controls both the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei and the radii of neutron stars. Recent electroweak experiments at Jefferson Lab, specifically PREX, have provided the cleanest terrestrial constraints on the EOS near saturation density. Complementary to neutron skins is the isovector giant dipole resonance, particularly the electric dipole polarizability. This contribution discusses the implications of these measurements on the nuclear EOS and the role of upcoming electroweak capabilities at Jefferson Lab in addressing their impact on the structure and composition of neutron stars.
This paper presents the Articulated Animal AI Environment for Animal Cognition, an enhanced version of the previous AnimalAI Environment. Key improvements include the addition of agent limbs, enabling more complex behaviors and interactions with the environment that closely resemble real animal movements. The testbench features an integrated curriculum training sequence and evaluation tools, eliminating the need for users to develop their own training programs. Additionally, the tests and training procedures are randomized, which will improve the agent's generalization capabilities. These advancements significantly expand upon the original AnimalAI framework and will be used to evaluate agents on various aspects of animal cognition.

Pach's animal problem asks whether any animal can be transformed to a single cube by adding or removing cubes one by one in such a way that any intermediate step is an animal as well. Here we provide an example of an animal that cannot be transformed to a single cube this way within its bounding box.
