The study represents the first retrospective bibliometric analysis and mapping of the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (IEEE TVCG), one of the leading journals in the field of visualization and computer graphics, a discipline with expanding literature and emerging new areas. Using descriptive bibliometrics, the dynamics and trend patterns of publications, received citations and the impact factor of the journal were analyzed. The most productive and influential papers, authors, countries and institutions were identified. A mapping analysis, performed with VOSviewer software, visualized bibliometric networks from the perspective of keywords, authors, countries, institutions, cited references and cited journals, using co–occurrence, bibliographic coupling and co–citation analyses. From the results, the IEEE TVCG emerged as one of the leading journals in the field of visualization and computer graphics. The mapping of research themes revealed a range of established and evolving areas, including data visualizations, computer graphics, image synthesis and representation, scientific visualizations, interactive digital environments, such as virtual and augmented realities, human perception, animations and simulations. The rising number of published articles and citations, and a high journal impact factor demonstrated the growing interest of the academic community for the journal IEEE TVCG and the aforementioned area. The results and conclusions can be a valuable reference for academics, researchers and practitioners in computer graphics and visualization, as well as for authors and readers in the area of scientometrics.
Understanding relationships between sets is an important analysis task that has received widespread attention in the visualization community. The major challenge in this context is the combinatorial explosion of the number of set intersections if the number of sets exceeds a trivial threshold. In this paper we introduce UpSet, a novel visualization technique for the quantitative analysis of sets, their intersections, and aggregates of intersections. UpSet is focused on creating task-driven aggregates, communicating the size and properties of aggregates and intersections, and a duality between the visualization of the elements in a dataset and their set membership. UpSet visualizes set intersections in a matrix layout and introduces aggregates based on groupings and queries. The matrix layout enables the effective representation of associated data, such as the number of elements in the aggregates and intersections, as well as additional summary statistics derived from subset or element attributes. Sorting according to various measures enables a task-driven analysis of relevant intersections and aggregates. The elements represented in the sets and their associated attributes are visualized in a separate view. Queries based on containment in specific intersections, aggregates or driven by attribute filters are propagated between both views. We also introduce several advanced visual encodings and interaction methods to overcome the problems of varying scales and to address scalability. UpSet is web-based and open source. We demonstrate its general utility in multiple use cases from various domains.
Welcome to the 2015 ACM SIGGRAPH Symposium on Interactive 3D Graphics and Games! This 19th meeting of the symposium is being held February 27-March 1 in San Francisco, California. As in 2014, the event is being held back-toback with the Game Developers Conference. We hope this will continue to motivate the high academia-industry interaction that is always present at I3D. This year's program consists of 15 papers selected by a rigorous peer review process from amongst 41 submissions. In addition, we continue our collaboration with IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. A selection of I3D papers will be invited to submit extended versions to a special issue of TVCG. We are also continuing our partnership with the Journal of Computer Graphics Techniques. Five papers originally published in JCGT will be presented in the I3D plenary session, and a selection of I3D papers will also be invited to submit extended versions for publication in JCGT. We hope these partnerships will continue bringing additional attention to I3D and the quality of the work published here.
Deep convolutional neural networks have performed remarkably well on many Computer Vision tasks. However, these networks are heavily reliant on big data to avoid overfitting. Overfitting refers to the phenomenon when a network learns a function with very high variance such as to perfectly model the training data. Unfortunately, many application domains do not have access to big data, such as medical image analysis. This survey focuses on Data Augmentation, a data-space solution to the problem of limited data. Data Augmentation encompasses a suite of techniques that enhance the size and quality of training datasets such that better Deep Learning models can be built using them. The image augmentation algorithms discussed in this survey include geometric transformations, color space augmentations, kernel filters, mixing images, random erasing, feature space augmentation, adversarial training, generative adversarial networks, neural style transfer, and meta-learning. The application of augmentation methods based on GANs are heavily covered in this survey. In addition to augmentation techniques, this paper will briefly discuss other characteristics of Data Augmentation such as test-time augmentation, resolution impact, final dataset size, and curriculum learning. This survey will present existing methods for Data Augmentation, promising developments, and meta-level decisions for implementing Data Augmentation. Readers will understand how Data Augmentation can improve the performance of their models and expand limited datasets to take advantage of the capabilities of big data.
