Mindfulness-based interventions are promising psychological treatment approaches that may have more substantial long-lasting intervention effects than cognitive behavioral therapy when treating individuals with early psychosis. A pilot study analyzed mindfulness-based inpatient group therapy's feasibility and potential efficacy (Feel-Good). This paper explores the subjective experiences of participants in the Feel-Good inpatient therapy group to gain insight into the possible changes brought about by the mindfulness-based intervention. A semi-structured change interview was used to examine the experience of ten participants who participated in the Feel-Good intervention and the additional qualitative assessment. The interviews were conducted 16 weeks after the Feel-Good group ended (16-week Follow-Up). Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. The analysis generated five themes-one about personal changes brought about by the Feel-Good group, three about the group therapy experience, and one about wishes/modification suggestions to change and improve the Feel-Good group. The findings suggested that the Feel-Good group was perceived as very helpful, leading to numerous changes in one's overall well-being and relation to emotions. However, patients recommended a more directive therapeutic style and reduced time required for study assessments. Gathering qualitative insight from participants on the Feel-Good intervention revealed meaningful insight into patients' experience of change processes. In addition, participant suggestions help to improve the intervention and study design to increase therapy attendance rates and treatment satisfaction, potentially increasing treatment effectiveness in the future. The safest way to meet our nation's blood needs is through regular, repeat, voluntary, nonremunerated donors, as recommended by the National Blood Transfusion Council. While several innovative methods are needed to draw in and keep these willing blood donors, optimization of the fundamental donation procedures can guarantee a positive and pleasant experience for them and improve donor retention. To provide a steady and secure blood supply, we emphasize on eight step-by-step guidelines in this article to address the positive blood donation experience and assure donor comfort and safety.

Chronic fluid overload (FO) can be detected using bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) and is associated with higher mortality risk than interdialytic weight gain in patients receiving hemodialysis (HD). This study aimed to explore patients' perspectives and comprehension of FO and dry weight. Qualitative study arm of an exploratory, nonrandomized observational study. Semistructured interviews were conducted in 25 HD patients at Vienna General Hospital. A survey was developed based on the interview data and distributed across 3 HD centers (n = 148). A mixed-methods approach was applied: grounded theory guided qualitative coding, whereas survey data were analyzed descriptively. 11 of 25 interviewed patients had chronic FO > 15% BIS-defined extracellular volume predialysis. Theme 1, "Being aware of fluid restrictions," contained the following subthemes: (1a) "Restrictive fluid intake is the major burden," (1b) "Symptom awareness of FO," (1c) "Misconception of chronic FO," (1d) "Unawareness of BIS," and (1e) "neglected salt restriction." Subthemes 1c and 1d were reinforced by the survey, in which 54.7% fully or partially agreed that chronic FO occurs between HD sessions (misunderstood as interdialytic weight gain). Theme 2, "Dry weight is a feel-good factor," contained subthemes, (2a) "Inconclusive definitions of dry weight," (2b) "Better too high than too low," (2c) "Self-management of dry-weight prescription," and (2d) "Uncertainties in weight documentation." In our survey, 77.9% reported being able to define dry weight; 64.2% fully or partially agreed they currently had the correct dry weight; and 65.0% did not feel overhydrated (chronic FO was prevalent in ∼40%). 64.5% were not interested in participating in an educational event on dry weight and chronic FO. Sample size, gender bias, and the survey was not validated externally. Substantial knowledge gaps existed regarding dry weight and chronic FO, necessitating improved patient engagement strategies into fluid management and further research into the underlying reasons for patients' disinterest. Inadequate control of fluid status in hemodialysis patients is associated with increased cardiovascular risk and mortality. This study examined how patients understand chronic fluid overload (FO) and dry weight, 2 clinically important but often misunderstood concepts. Based on qualitative interviews and a follow-up survey, many patients confused chronic FO with short-term weight gain and were unfamiliar with diagnostic tools such as bioimpedance spectroscopy. Despite the high prevalence of FO, most patients believed their fluid status was adequate and showed limited interest in education. These findings highlight a disconnection between clinical risk and patient perception, emphasizing the need for targeted communication strategies to improve patient understanding, engagement, and adherence in fluid management.
Listening to music can be a rewarding experience for many. Research has shown that multiple factors influence musical reward including personality, age, and musical expertise. However, the role of culture in shaping musical reward remains underexplored. Most cross-cultural studies in music psychology have compared individuals from different countries. This study adopted a novel approach by examining self-construal, an individual-level explanation for cultural differences, in relation to musical rewards associated with favourite music across cultures. A cross-sectional online questionnaire was administered to 435 participants. Results from the multilevel regression analyses, using the two-dimensional model of self-construal, revealed that only within-region variation of interdependent and independent self-construals, not between-region variation of interdependence and independence, were positively associated with musical reward. Specifically, both self-construals were associated with emotion evocation and social reward, while independent self-construal was associated with musical seeking, mood regulation, and sensory-motor subtypes. When applying the eight-dimensional model of self-construal, distinct self-construal profiles emerged in relation to different musical reward subtypes, with the interdependent pole of connectedness to others positively associated with most subtypes except for emotion evocation reward. These findings provide preliminary evidence that self-construal influences the types of rewards experienced across cultures. In particular, one's sense of self, whether construed as interdependent or independent, shapes the types of rewards experienced with favourite music. This study underscores the importance of incorporating specific cultural factors in cross-cultural research on musical reward. By examining self-construal, this work contributes to a more nuanced understanding of cultural diversity in music psychology.
Hope is a critically important concept in palliative care that enables coping and increases quality of life. This qualitative study was conducted to determine how palliative care patients describe hope and the factors that increase or decrease hope after a hope intervention. Data were collected through semi-structural interviews with 10 palliative care patients. The analysis followed a thematic analysis approach. The participants defined hope as the joy of living in general, and the strength to cope with difficulties and stated that spending time with loved ones increased their hopes, the worsening of their diseases reduced their hopes, hope made them feel good psychologically, and health workers had an important role in increasing hope. It is recommended that hope interventions be person-centric in palliative care settings and that care should be structured by considering the factors that maintain and prevent hope.
Clinical trial participants rarely represent the real-world treatment population, potentially due to costs associated with participation. Monetary reimbursement for trial-related costs could address financial barriers to trial recruitment and retention. This mixed-methods, pilot, feasibility study provided financial reimbursement to women with breast cancer participating in a clinical trial. Patients were reimbursed $1000/month during their first 4 months of trial participation, surveyed biweekly to assess changes in financial toxicity, and then interviewed to explore the effects of receiving reimbursement on trial-related costs and recruitment and retention. Mixed-effect modeling and thematic analysis were completed. Feasibility was defined as 80% retention of patients on the reimbursement study, with those retained completing 75% of surveys. Of 39 consented patients, 33 patients completed the pilot study (85% retention, 100% survey completion). Patients were a median 52 years old (interquartile range = 44-59), 48% Black, 67% privately insured, and 42% found it difficult to live on their current income. Patient financial toxicity modestly decreased. Patients (n = 32) reported using the reimbursement to pay for trial visit-related food, transportation, caregiver expenses, and out-of-pocket medical costs. Patients felt receiving reimbursement affected trial retention more so than recruitment, stating "I would have enrolled regardless … [but knowing] it wasn't going to place a financial strain on us because of these reimbursements. … It made it easier for me to feel good about continuing." Reimbursement for clinical trial-related costs is feasible, suggests decreases in financial toxicity, and is a promising approach to improve trial retention outcomes in women with breast cancer. Social media is a central arena for the articulation of values, shaping what people around the world deem important and desirable. However, traditional value typologies struggle to capture the dynamic nature of value expression in digital spheres and overlook new communication-related values prevalent in these environments. Addressing these gaps, we developed an analytical framework for investigating value expression on social media, comprising three general value orientations (Do well, Do good, and Feel good) and four communicative value orientations (Inform, Influence, Bond, and Express). We drew on extensive cross-national research to construct the framework and examined its utility through a study of TikTok videos related to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Our analysis shows how value orientations enable the identification of patterns that underpin complex discourses. Ultimately, our framework offers a pathway to understand what people present as valuable on social media, as well as the broader value ecosystem platforms cultivate.
Drag is a form of entertainment in which performers caricature or challenge gender norms. It is increasingly present in the media and research and seems to involve multiple interrelated activities. The objective of this study was to explore the scope of empirical research regarding the experience of drag performers and its relations with health and wellbeing from an occupational perspective. A scoping review was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Gender Studies Database, and Social Sciences Abstracts from their inception to May 2025 to scope for empirical studies. The search strategy consisted of keywords related to 'drag'. Two independent reviewers screened titles, abstracts, and full texts. The data of the included studies were extracted and analysed based on the four dimensions and 15 components of the 'Do-Live-Well' (DLW) framework. Consumer and community were not involved. Among the 5132 references screened, 34 studies were included. Disparities were observable in the coverage of the different components of the DLW. The most frequently DLW components discussed were as follows: 'social forces' (33/34), 'developing and expressing identity' (27/34), 'connecting with others' (25/34), and 'meaning' (21/34). The least DLW components discussed were as follows: 'balance' (1/34), 'control/choice' (3/34), 'experiencing pleasure and joy' (5/34), and 'activating the body, mind, and senses' (6/34). Findings from empirical research highlight how the occupation of drag plays an important role in the development and expression of personal identity for performers and in the creation of social bonds with their peers, the audience, and the community in a context where stigmatisation is present. Studies focussing on the factors influencing engagement in drag, such as the associated abilities, tasks, activities, routines, and life balance, are yet to be explored to deepen our understanding of doing drag on health and wellbeing. Drag is a type of performance where people dress up and act in ways that play with gender roles. This can include wearing special clothes, using make‐up, and performing on stage. People do drag for fun, for self‐expression, and to connect with others. This study looked at what research says about the lives of drag performers and how drag affects health and wellbeing. We searched large research databases for studies published up to May 2025. From more than 5100 results, we included 34 studies that met our rules. We reviewed these studies using the Do‐Live‐Well framework. This framework helps us understand how everyday activities support health and wellbeing. Most studies showed that drag helps people feel good about who they are. Drag can support identity, confidence, creativity, and a sense of purpose. Many studies also talked about the importance of community and belonging. Being part of drag communities helped people feel connected and supported. Some studies described social challenges. These included stigma, discrimination, and lack of understanding from others. Even so, many performers found drag meaningful and important in their lives. Very few studies talked about practical issues. These included balancing drag with other parts of life, having choice and control, or the physical demands of performing. These areas need more attention in future research. Overall, this review shows that drag is a meaningful activity that supports self‐expression and social connection. More research is needed to better understand the everyday and practical factors that affect drag performers and their wellbeing.
In soccer, predicting players' fatigue experienced immediately before a training session or match can help design training programs and optimize performance. This study aimed to identify the most important predictors of daily and match-day fatigue in six Italian professional soccer teams during a competitive season using a framework of big data analytics. Every morning, the players rated fatigue, sleep quality, muscle soreness, stress, and mood. After each training session or match, the session Rating of Perceived Exertion was obtained and multiplied by duration to calculate the training load (TL). A framework of four machine learning models (Decision Tree classifier, XGBoost classifier, Random Forest Classifier, and Logistic regression) was trained and tested on 30.211 examples (one full season of six teams) to assess their ability to predict the players' match-day fatigue. The machine learning models accurately predicted the players' subjective fatigue (models' range accuracy 70-82%). Specifically, in the prediction of match-day fatigue, stress, and mood of the previous day were the most influential factors. Mediation analysis unveils the relationship between TL of the day before the match and the perception of match-day fatigue, also mediated by mood and muscle soreness. Sport scientists and coaches can apply this framework to simulate the effects of different training programs, thus maximizing players' readiness and mitigating potential drops in performance associated with match-day fatigue in a real-world scenario.
Quality of life (QoL) for people affected by tuberculosis (TB) is generally poor. However, little is known about when and why it changes during treatment. Such knowledge is key to the development and implementation of meaningful interventions. We sought to explore perceptions of QoL amongst people with pulmonary TB during and after treatment. This study was embedded within a larger study exploring multilevel determinants on TB cascade-of-care outcomes in Eastern Cape, South Africa. Between November 2023 and April 2024, 33 adults were purposively sampled for individual semi-structured interviews early, mid, and at the conclusion of treatment. Questions explored perspectives on current QoL and changes in specific domains (e.g., role functioning, mental wellbeing) during illness and treatment. Inductive and deductive techniques were combined in thematic analysis which incorporated QoL and chronic illness frameworks. Participants described a common trajectory in QoL changes; however, overall assessments of QoL were highly personal. Shared trajectory was characterized by four phases: 'progressive disability to diagnosis', 'treatment challenges and QoL bottom', 'inflection and hope', and 'stability and incomplete resolution'. TB symptoms limited functional mobility, causing a financial crisis for many. Intense need for caregiving, emotional, and financial support persisted for weeks and months until physical gains eased problems in other domains. However, many who had completed treatment described continued weakness and inability to work. Participants provided highly varied assessments of current QoL rooted in personal priorities and individual circumstances. While few clear trends were noted, those with recurrent TB (48%, n = 16) were more often dissatisfied with their wellbeing. By the end of treatment, participants were no more likely to evaluate QoL positively compared to those earlier in treatment. Adaptable interventions that can be tailored to individual needs are required to help those with TB feel good about their life position. Intervention components should be delivered in the setting of long-term relationships with providers and prioritize financial wellbeing and counselling. High levels of support are needed during early treatment but supports must remain accessible through treatment completion and beyond.
Current studies have explained only a small proportion of variance in hearing aid (HA) uptake and use. This novel study applied theoretical frameworks of human behaviour to develop surveys to identify further barriers and enablers that could be addressed with behavioural interventions. Data on hearing healthcare decisions/behaviours and/or acceptability of interventions was extracted from an ongoing systematic review of barriers and enablers to uptake and use of hearing interventions conducted by some of the authors. Two surveys, one each for HA users and non-users, were administered primarily online. Respondents were 38 adult HA users and 48 non-users in Australia with diagnosed hearing loss recruited across three metropolitan/rural audiology clinics. Survey responses yielded 5 barriers and 7 enablers not previously identified. Barriers included other health concerns being more important, and lack of knowledge about HAs and trust in service providers. Enablers included the input of others, and the beliefs that HAs are easy to manage and that HAs would make people feel good about themselves. Applying behavioural frameworks to identify barriers and enablers to hearing aid uptake and use resulted in identification of influences not previously reported. These should be addressed with behavioural interventions.
Autistic students often face unique challenges at school compared to their non-autistic peers. However, there is a lack of robust evidence investigating their well-being at school. This study examined autistic adolescents' school well-being using data from a UK population-based cohort. Participants self-reported their positive and negative affect towards and within school. Results indicated that autistic adolescents (n = 271; Mage = 13.73; SD = 0.47; 23.11% female) experienced significantly lower levels of school well-being than non-autistic adolescents (n = 8077; Mage = 13.78; SD = 0.45; 50.67% female), as evidenced by both lower positive, and higher negative, affect. Differences were attenuated when factors associated with school well-being were controlled for, and levels of well-being no longer differed significantly. Autistic adolescents' (n = 412; Mage = 13.76; SD = 0.46; 18.52% female) positive affect towards school was mostly associated with academic self-concept, whereas negative affect was mostly associated with academic self-concept, bullying victimisation and peer problems. The findings suggest that autistic school well-being could be promoted by supporting autistic students to feel good about their academic effort at school, as well as through school-wide anti-bullying programmes.Lay abstractMany autistic young people often experience difficulties at school. However, we know little about how autistic students feel about school compared to their non-autistic peers. Understanding their experiences is important, because school well-being might affect going to school, longer-term learning, as well as friendships and mental health. In this study, we used information from a UK national survey of young people aged 14 years. Students were asked about how happy they felt at school (positive feelings) and how often they felt unhappy at school (negative feelings). We compared answers from autistic and non-autistic students. We also looked at what things were related to autistic students' feelings about school, including how confident they felt in their schoolwork, experiences of bullying and relationships with friends and family. Autistic students reported feeling less happy and more unhappy at school than non-autistic students. When we considered other things related to well-being, such as being bullying or self-confidence at school, these differences became a lot smaller. For autistic students, positive feelings about school were most strongly related to believing they were good at their schoolwork. Negative feelings about school were related to being bullied, difficult relationships with friends and lower confidence in schoolwork. These findings suggest that differences in school well-being between autistic and non-autistic students may be explained by things that could be changed with support. Supporting autistic students to feel more confident about how well they do academically, and ensuring schools reduce bullying, could help improve autistic young people's experiences of school.
Many municipalities in Sweden offer group exercises for older persons at meeting places, i.e., senior centres. However, it is unclear whether older persons experience group exercises as in accordance with their needs and wishes. The aim was to explore older persons' experiences of participating in group exercises held at meeting places in municipalities from a person-centred perspective. Individual interviews were conducted with 18 persons aged 65 and over who participated in group exercises at meeting places in six different municipalities. The interview guide was based on a person-centred framework. The data were analysed using content analysis, first deductively and then inductively. The findings were presented in two main categories. The first concerned incentives for older persons to continue exercising in groups, which were held at meeting places. Such incentives were the encouragement they felt from the power of the group and the fact that the group exercises made them feel good. They also felt a sense of worth from having time and effort invested in them. The second main category included mixed feelings about the interaction between the older persons and the stakeholders, primarily the exercise leader. On the one hand, the older persons felt a strong trust in the exercise leaders, but on the other, they felt ambivalent and had ambiguous feelings regarding their own opportunities to influence the group exercises. To conclude, the group exercises held at meeting places contribute to meaningful relationships and a sense of social belonging and togetherness. The intervention not only promotes physical and mental health but also counters loneliness and social isolation, and therefore needs to be scaled up even more. This study highlights the need to make group exercises more person-centred and to introduce processes that include the needs and wishes of older persons in the design of such interventions.
Dopamine (DA): the brain's "feel-good" chemical that keeps us motivated, happy, and ready to take on the world. This essential neurotransmitter is involved in various physiological processes such as motor control, reward, and mood regulation. Dysregulation of DA levels is linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, emphasizing the need for sensitive and accurate detection methods for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Fluorometric sensing presents an appealing, cost-effective approach to detect DA, especially in complex biological fluids. In this study, we report the synthesis and application of chromium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), Cr-IA and Cr-BTC (IA: itaconic acid and BTC: benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid), as highly sensitive fluorometric sensors for DA detection in bio-fluids. Cr-IA and Cr-BTC MOFs were synthesized using a solvothermal method with their respective ligands and chromium salts, utilizing a mixed solvent system comprising water, ethanol, and dimethylformamide (DMF). Both MOFs were characterized using a variety of techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), zeta potential measurements, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) that provided essential information on the structural integrity, surface morphology, crystallinity, thermal stability, and surface charge properties of the MOFs, confirming the successful synthesis and characterization of both materials. The synthesized MOFs exhibited remarkable fluorometric sensing capabilities for dopamine detection in HEPES buffer, aqueous solution, and human serum, showcasing strong fluorescence response with high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability across a wide pH range. Cr-IA MOF demonstrated a 3.4-fold fluorescence intensity increase in HEPES buffer, while Cr-BTC MOF achieved a 5-fold enhancement. Both MOFs showed low limits of detection, with Cr-IA and Cr-BTC achieving 21 nM and 41 nM in HEPES buffer, and 26 nM and 20 nM in water, respectively. Fluorescence quenching and visible color changes upon dopamine addition enabled real-time and visual detection, while their dose-response behavior in human serum further validated their reliability for bioanalytical applications. Cytotoxicity studies confirmed their biocompatibility, ensuring their safe use in biological systems. These findings establish Cr-IA and Cr-BTC as highly promising materials for diagnostic and therapeutic monitoring, offering potential for clinical diagnostics and broader biomedical applications.
Humans are perhaps evolutionarily engineered to get deeply addicted to sugar, as it not only provides energy but also helps in storing fats, which helps in survival during starvation. Additionally, sugars (glucose and fructose) stimulate the feel-good factor, as they trigger the secretion of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, associated with the reward sensation, uplifting the mood in general. However, when consumed in excess, it contributes to energy imbalance, weight gain, and obesity, leading to the onset of a complex metabolic disorder, generally referred to as diabetes. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the most prevalent forms of diabetes, nearly affecting all age groups. T2DM is clinically diagnosed with a cardinal sign of chronic hyperglycemia (excessive sugar in the blood). Chronic hyperglycemia, coupled with dysfunctions of pancreatic β-cells, insulin resistance, and immune inflammation, further exacerbate the pathology of T2DM. Uncontrolled T2DM, a major public health concern, also contributes significantly toward the onset and progression of several micro- and macrovascular diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular diseases, including cancer. The current review discusses the epidemiology, causative factors, pathophysiology, and associated comorbidities, including the existing and emerging therapies related to T2DM. It also provides a future roadmap for alternative drug discovery for the management of T2DM.
While healthcare professionals constantly remind their patients of the importance of a balanced diet for their health, they tend to forget this when it comes to themselves. It is therefore important to make them aware of this. Beyond nutrition, this can lead to the development of a culture of self-care, team cohesion, and sharing. Eating better to feel good and provide better quality care is an essential lever for encouraging professionals to take back control of their own health.
Interpersonal emotion regulation commonly occurs in the context of close relationships. The present study examined whether accurately knowing the emotions that one's romantic partner would feel in a given situation was associated with the effectiveness of interpersonal emotion regulation attempts. One partner from 92 romantic dyads (N = 184) was randomly assigned to the role of the target, and the other was assigned to the role of the regulator. Each participant read four vignettes depicting emotion-inducing scenarios. Targets rated the emotions they would feel in each situation, whereas regulators reported how they thought their partner would feel in each situation. Targets were then asked to describe what their partner could say to help them feel good or better in each situation, using an open-ended response format. The regulators were asked to describe what they would say to their partners to help them feel good or better in each situation. Accuracy was defined as the mean difference in ratings between the regulator's estimates of their partner's emotions and their actual emotion ratings across the scenarios. Effectiveness of regulation was defined as the mean score of similarity between regulator's open-ended responses and target's open-ended responses as rated by independent coders. The results showed that empathic accuracy significantly predicted regulation effectiveness. We also found that individual differences in regulators' emotional clarity scores predicted empathic accuracy. This study sheds light on the importance of accurately perceiving a partner's emotions for effective regulation in close relationships. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved).
