The target of this study was to compare the results of breath analysers and "lege artis" laboratory blood examinations when determining alcohol levels. This was then used to determine whether any differences exist between the two methods, and how large these differences are. 610 cases from 11 workplaces in the Czech Republic and Slovakia were analysed. The type of breath analyser was not taken into consideration. All cases had to be in the elimination phase. Difference of time between breath test and blood test were rectified through the use of reverse recomputation. It was detected that only 20.8% of the results of respiratory analyser tests correspond to the detected real alcohol level in blood. The maximum difference when a respiratory analyser measured more than a blood test was 1.34 g x kg(-1). and the maximum difference when the analyse measured less was 1.86 g x kg(-1).

We evaluate results of health care of the Czech-Slovak-Ugandan Hospital in Buikwe in Uganda in years 2009-2010. During this period numbers of out-patient examinations, deliveries, major operations and laboratory examinations continually increased. However; the obstetrical care at the Hospital was insufficient, some gynaecologists were absent for long time. Leading physician of Maternity ward was a Ugandan doctor 3 years after graduation without any specialization. Obstetrical care at the Hospital should be provided by an experienced gynaecologist with at least of 10 years of obstetrical practice. Hospital should be managed by an experienced physician in the position of the Medical Director and by another person at the authority of Administrative Director. From the side of the main provider of the Hospital - Archdiocese Charity Prague it would be necessary to renew desolate beds in the Hospital, to complete construction of Paediatric and Adult wards, to accept more professional management and to return to the original project for decrease of maternal and perinatal mortality.

Two physiological journals were founded in Czechoslovakia in 1952, namely Ceskoslovenská fyziologie and an international version which was then named Cechoslovackaja fiziologija, later renamed Physiologia Bohemoslovaca. The first three volumes of the latter journal were published exclusively in Russian with German summaries. It was not until 1956 that most reports began to be published in English, with Russian summaries. In 1958, the content of both journals at last became separated. Cs. fyziol. started to publish review articles in Czech or Slovak, abstracts of communications reported at various scientific meetings, news from international symposia, etc. Physiol. Bohemoslov. continued to print the results of original experimental work. The major personality standing at the cradle of the two journals was Ernest Gutmann. Both journals were published by the Institute of Physiology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague. In an attempt to make the latter journal more attractive to perspective authors from abroad, the international journal was renamed Physiological Research (formerly Physiologia Bohemoslovaca) in 1991 and still is being published by the same institution. It is indexed and abstracted by Current Contents, Excerpta Medica/Medline, Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Current Awareness in Biological Sciences and Science Citation Index. A major change also occurred with the journal Ceskoslovenská fyziologie. This is now (since 1992) being published by the Czech Medical Society J.E. Purkynĕ. Besides publishing reviews intended as pregraduate and postdoctoral training for physiologists, physicians, pharmacologists and others working in allied fields of science, the journal informs members of the Czech and Slovak Physiological Societies about domestic and world news in physiology.
The authors explain the principle of cochlear neuroprostheses, an electronic device which makes it possible to mediate acoustic perceptions to completely deaf patients. They describe the Czechoslovak cochlear neuroprosthesis, developed and manufactured in the Laboratory of electronic sensory prostheses. For clinical application preoperative and postoperative examination of the patients is essential. For these examinations in the Laboratory a computer-controlled testing system was developed. The authors describe tests for the selection of candidates for implantation and for evaluation of the assets of the neuroprosthesis.
Brief summaries of papers from the twenty-third demographic conference of the Czechoslovak Demographic Society are presented. The focus is on demographic behavior in the Czech Republic and Slovakia on the eve of the breakup of Czechoslovakia. A move toward lower fertility is predicted for both republics. Dermatobiasis, a tropical furuculoid myiasis caused by the larvae of Dermatobia hominis (family Cuterebridae) was manifested in a Czech expert already within several days of field work in the state Minas Gerais, Brasil. Due to the localization at the root of the nose above the left eye vision was impaired and the patient developed a general reaction. As loss of the eye was feared, the patient returned to his homeland. The recorded case draws attention to the fact that several days in an endemic area suffice to contract this serious parasitosis and that the latter may then be introduced also into Central Europe.
This is a collection of short papers presented at a conference held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1991. The focus of the conference was on the demographic changes that have occurred in Czechoslovakia since World War II and their relationship to such changes in the rest of Europe and elsewhere in the world. Essay topics include fertility trends; contraceptive prevalence, including abortion rates; living standards and health care; and changes in the age structure. Some data for selected countries are included for comparison. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND RUS)
