We investigate the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking and show that, before symmetry breaking, the interaction of Higgs fields with massless gauge fields leads to the production of particles with negative squared mass.
The origin of large magnetic fields in the Universe remains currently unknown. We investigate here a mechanism before recombination based on known physics. The source of the vorticity is due to the changes in the photon distribution function caused by the fluctuations in the background photons. We show that the magnetic field generated in the MHD limit, due to the Coulomb scattering, is of the order $10^{-49}$~G on a coherence scale of 10 kpc. We explicitly show that the magnetic fields generated from this process are sustainable and are not erased by resistive diffusion. We compare the results with current observations and discuss the implications. Our seed magnetic fields are generated on small scales whereas the main mechanisms studied in the literature are on scale bigger than 1 Mpc. However, compared to more exotic theories generating seed magnetic fields on similar scales, the strength of our fields are generally smaller.
We construct a minimal task that isolates conditional learning in neural networks: a surjective map with K-fold ambiguity, resolved by a selector token z, so H(A | B) = log K while H(A | B, z) = 0. The model learns the marginal P(A | B) first, producing a plateau at exactly log K, before acquiring the full conditional in a sharp, collective transition. The plateau has a clean decomposition: height = log K (set by ambiguity), duration = f(D) (set by dataset size D, not K). Gradient noise stabilizes the marginal solution: higher learning rates monotonically slow the transition (3.6* across a 7* η range at fixed throughput), and batch-size reduction delays escape, consistent with an entropic force opposing departure from the low-gradient marginal. Internally, a selector-routing head assembles during the plateau, leading the loss transition by ~50% of the waiting time. This is the Type 2 directional asymmetry of Papadopoulos et al. [2024], measured dynamically: we track the excess risk from log K to zero and characterize what stabilizes it, what triggers its collapse, and how long it takes.
What can be said about the spin of new particles without knowing their mass during an initial discovery phase at CERN? We consider this question in a topology where mass measurement is particularly difficult, $pp\to Y\bar{Y}\to lX\bar{l}\,\bar{X}$, and introduce two new variables $\ctv$ and $\Av$ which we prove are both independent of the mass of $X$. The variable $\ctv$ approximates the polar production angle of $Y$, and we find that it possesses greater statistical power in determining the spin of this particle than a previous, related variable, $\ctll$ \cite{Barr:2005dz}. $\Av$ is an asymmetry which can provide information about the couplings of a spin half $Y$. Because these variables can be used from the outset, without any knowledge of the masses of the new particles, we find here that it is possible to reverse the usual `mass before spin' determination timeline.
We claim, and present evidence, that allowing arXiv publication before a conference or journal submission benefits researchers, especially early career, as well as the whole scientific community. Specifically, arXiving helps professional identity building, protects against independent re-discovery, idea theft and gate-keeping; it facilitates open research result distribution and reduces inequality. The advantages dwarf the drawbacks -- mainly the relative increase in acceptance rate of papers of well-known authors -- which studies show to be marginal. Analyzing the pros and cons of arXiving papers, we conclude that requiring preprints be anonymous is nearly as detrimental as not allowing them. We see no reasons why anyone but the authors should decide whether to arXiv or not.
I suggest that the origin of the Mpemba effect (the freezing of hot water before cold) is freezing-point depression by solutes, either gaseous or solid, whose solubility decreases with increasing temperature so that they are removed when water is heated. They are concentrated ahead of the freezing front by zone refining in water that has not been heated, reduce the temperature of the freezing front, and thereby reduce the temperature gradient and heat flux, slowing the progress of the front. I present a simple calculation of this effect, and suggest experiments to test this hypothesis.
I discuss a hypothetical historical context in which a Bohm-like deterministic interpretation of the Schrodinger equation could have been proposed before the Born probabilistic interpretation and argue that in such a context the Copenhagen (Bohr) interpretation would probably have never achieved great popularity among physicists.
We study the probability of two Brownian particles to meet before one of them exits a finite interval. We obtain an explicit expression for the probability as a function of the initial distance of the two particles using the Weierstrass elliptic function. We also find the law of the meeting location. Brownian simulations show the accuracy of our analysis. Finally, we discuss some applications to the probability that a double strand DNA break repairs in confined environments.
We re-examine the interaction of ultra high energy nuclei with the microwave background radiation. We find that the giant dipole resonance leaves a new signature in the differential energy spectrum of iron sources located around 3 Mpc: A depression before the bump which is followed by the expected cutoff.
For slowly rotating fluids, we establish the existence of a critical point similar to the one found for non-rotating systems. As the fluid approaches the critical point, the effective inertial mass of any fluid element decreases, vanishing at that point and changing of sign beyond it. This result implies that first order perturbative method is not always reliable to study dissipative processes ocurring before relaxation. Physical consequences that might follow from this effect are commented.
