We prove $L^\infty$ and $W^{1,2}$ weighted Wente's inequalities. We prove in particular the critical case: for the $|x|^2$ weighted Wente's estimate the optimal weight is $|x|^2\log|x|$.
Whether the system under study is a shoal of fish, a collection of neurons, or a set of interacting atmospheric and oceanic processes, transfer entropy measures the flow of information between time series and can detect possible causal relationships. Much like mutual information, transfer entropy is generally reported as a single value summarizing an amount of shared variation, yet a more fine-grained accounting might illuminate much about the processes under study. Here we propose to decompose transfer entropy and localize the bits of variation on both sides of information flow: that of the originating process's past and that of the receiving process's future. We employ the information bottleneck (IB) to compress the time series and identify the transferred entropy. We apply our method to decompose the transfer entropy in several synthetic recurrent processes and an experimental mouse dataset of concurrent behavioral and neural activity. Our approach highlights the nuanced dynamics within information flow, laying a foundation for future explorations into the intricate interplay of temporal processes in complex systems.
Biotechnologies are being commercialized at historic rates. In 2020, 74 biotech startups went public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO), and 60 went through the IPO process in the first six months of 2021. However, the traits associated with biotech startups obtaining recent IPOs have not been reported. Here we build a database of biotechs that underwent an IPO in the first half of 2021. By analyzing leadership, technological focus, clinical trials, and financing, we found that advanced degrees among the leadership, clinical trials, and intellectual property are important factors for biotech startups. The data also suggest that large private rounds can decrease time-to-IPO and affect post-IPO stock performance. Notably, these traits were often exhibited by the 138 biotech IPOs in 2018-2019, suggesting 2021 data were not driven by COVID.
We provide a counterexample of Wente's inequality in the context of Neumann boundary conditions. We will also show that Wente's estimates fails for general boundary conditions of Robin type.
We find various lower and upper bounds for the index of Wente tori that contain a continuous family of planar principal curves. We then prove a result that gives an algorithm for computing the index sharply.
It is explained on a physical basis how contextuality allows Bell inequalities to be violated, without bringing an implication on locality or realism. The point is that the initial values of the hidden variables of the detectors are mutually exclusive for different detector settings. Therefore they have no reason to possess a common probability distribution and hence no reason to satisfy Bell inequalities. To motivate this, we connect first to the local realistic theory Stochastic Electrodynamics, and then put the argument more broadly. Thus even if Bell Inequality Violation is demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt, it will have no say on local realism.
In this paper, we present quantitative and qualitative analysis of the top retweeted tweets (viral tweets) pertaining to the US presidential elections from September 1, 2016 to Election Day on November 8, 2016. For everyday, we tagged the top 50 most retweeted tweets as supporting or attacking either candidate or as neutral/irrelevant. Then we analyzed the tweets in each class for: general trends and statistics; the most frequently used hashtags, terms, and locations; the most retweeted accounts and tweets; and the most shared news and links. In all we analyzed the 3,450 most viral tweets that grabbed the most attention during the US election and were retweeted in total 26.3 million times accounting over 40% of the total tweet volume pertaining to the US election in the aforementioned period. Our analysis of the tweets highlights some of the differences between the social media strategies of both candidates, the penetration of their messages, and the potential effect of attacks on both
Machine Learning is usually defined as a subfield of AI, which is busy with information extraction from raw data sets. Despite of its common acceptance and widespread recognition, this definition is wrong and groundless. Meaningful information does not belong to the data that bear it. It belongs to the observers of the data and it is a shared agreement and a convention among them. Therefore, this private information cannot be extracted from the data by any means. Therefore, all further attempts of Machine Learning apologists to justify their funny business are inappropriate.
Revelations of large scale electronic surveillance and data mining by governments and corporations have fueled increased adoption of HTTPS. We present a traffic analysis attack against over 6000 webpages spanning the HTTPS deployments of 10 widely used, industry-leading websites in areas such as healthcare, finance, legal services and streaming video. Our attack identifies individual pages in the same website with 89% accuracy, exposing personal details including medical conditions, financial and legal affairs and sexual orientation. We examine evaluation methodology and reveal accuracy variations as large as 18% caused by assumptions affecting caching and cookies. We present a novel defense reducing attack accuracy to 27% with a 9% traffic increase, and demonstrate significantly increased effectiveness of prior defenses in our evaluation context, inclusive of enabled caching, user-specific cookies and pages within the same website.
Information exchange and message diffusion have moved from traditional media to social media platforms. Messages on platforms such as Twitter have become the default mode of company communications replacing lengthier public announcements and updates. Businesses and organizations have increased their use of Twitter to connect with stakeholders. As a result, it is important to understand the key drivers of successful information exchange and message diffusion via Twitter. We conducted an exploratory analysis on a dataset of over a million Tweets, comprising of over 40,000 lead Tweets, further filtered to over 18,000 Tweets. We identified the most popular messages, and analyzed the tweets on multiple endogenous dimensions including content, sentiment, motive and richness, and exogenous dimensions such as fundamental events, social learning, and activism. We found some interesting patterns and uncovered new insights to help researchers and practitioners better understand the behavior of popular viral tweets. We also performed sentiment analysis and present an early stage model to explain tweet performance.
In the pre-WMAP, pre-Supernova-Ia-Hubble-diagram era, quasar lensing statistics stubbornly indicated low values of Omega_Lambda. In contrast, a number of recent lensing statistics studies either find the data support the standard Lambda-CDM picture, or simply take the standard cosmological parameters as a given. Have the data or the analyses changed or improved, and how? I review several of the ``historical'' and the more recent studies, and show that there is no particular measurement, assumption, or model parameter in the old studies that was grossly wrong. Instead, at least several effects, operating together, are likely required in order to achieve agreement between the observations and the currently standard cosmology. Most likely among these effects are: a somewhat lower lensing cross section for elliptical galaxies than assumed in the past; some loss of lensed quasars in optical samples due to extinction by the lenses; and a somewhat lower-than-standard value of Omega_Lambda ~ 0.6. The agreement between recent model calculations and the results of radio lens surveys may be fortuitous, and due to a cancellation between the errors in the input parameters for the lens populatio
Explanations of time series models are useful for high stakes applications like healthcare but have received little attention in machine learning literature. We propose FIT, a framework that evaluates the importance of observations for a multivariate time-series black-box model by quantifying the shift in the predictive distribution over time. FIT defines the importance of an observation based on its contribution to the distributional shift under a KL-divergence that contrasts the predictive distribution against a counterfactual where the rest of the features are unobserved. We also demonstrate the need to control for time-dependent distribution shifts. We compare with state-of-the-art baselines on simulated and real-world clinical data and demonstrate that our approach is superior in identifying important time points and observations throughout the time series.
We show numerically that any of the constant mean curvature tori first found by Wente must have index at least eight.
Extending the abilities of service robots is important for expanding what they can achieve in everyday manipulation tasks. On the other hand, it is also essential to ensure them to determine what they can not achieve in certain cases due to either anomalies or permanent failures during task execution. Robots need to identify these situations, and reveal the reasons behind these cases to overcome and recover from them. In this paper, we propose and analyze a Long Short-Term Memories-based (LSTM-based) awareness approach to reveal the reasons behind an anomaly case that occurs during a manipulation episode in an unstructured environment. The proposed method takes into account the real-time observations of the robot by fusing visual, auditory and proprioceptive sensory modalities to achieve this task. We also provide a comparative analysis of our method with Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) and Conditional Random Fields (CRFs). The symptoms of anomalies are first learned from a given training set, then they can be classified in real-time based on the learned models. The approaches are evaluated on a Baxter robot executing object manipulation scenarios. The results indicate that the LSTM-ba
A purported black hole solution in (2+1)-dimensions is shown to be nothing more than flat space viewed from an accelerated frame.

Can you find an xy-equation that, when graphed, writes itself on the plane? This idea became internet-famous when a Wikipedia article on Tupper's self-referential formula went viral in 2012. Under scrutiny, the question has two flaws: it is meaningless (it depends on typography) and it is trivial (for reasons we will explain). We fix these flaws by formalizing the problem, and we give a very general solution using techniques from computability theory.
CG crowds have become increasingly popular this last decade in the VFX and animation industry: formerly reserved to only a few high end studios and blockbusters, they are now widely used in TV shows or commercials. Yet, there is still one major limitation: in order to be ingested properly in crowd software, studio rigs have to comply with specific prerequisites, especially in terms of deformations. Usually only skinning, blend shapes and geometry caches are supported preventing close-up shots with facial performances on crowd characters. We envisioned two approaches to tackle this: either reverse engineer the hundreds of deformer nodes available in the major DCCs/plugins and incorporate them in our crowd package, or surf the machine learning wave to compress the deformations of a rig using a neural network architecture. Considering we could not commit 5+ man/years of development into this problem, and that we were excited to dip our toes in the machine learning pool, we went for the latter. From our first tests to a minimum viable product, we went through hopes and disappointments: we hit multiple pitfalls, took false shortcuts and dead ends before reaching our destination. With th
Segmentation is a fundamental task in computer vision, with prompt-driven methods gaining prominence due to their flexibility. The Segment Anything Model (SAM) excels at point-prompted segmentation, while text-based models, often leveraging powerful multimodal encoders like BEIT-3, provide rich semantic understanding. However, effectively combining these complementary modalities remains a challenge. This paper introduces BiPrompt-SAM, a novel dual-modal prompt segmentation framework employing an explicit selection mechanism. We leverage SAM's ability to generate multiple mask candidates from a single point prompt and use a text-guided mask (generated via EVF-SAM with BEIT-3) to select the point-generated mask that best aligns spatially, measured by Intersection over Union (IoU). This approach, interpretable as a simplified Mixture of Experts (MoE), effectively fuses spatial precision and semantic context without complex model modifications. Notably, our method achieves strong zero-shot performance on the Endovis17 medical dataset (89.55% mDice, 81.46% mIoU) using only a single point prompt per instance. This significantly reduces annotation burden compared to bounding boxes and ali
The initial version of the planned paper has gone through a major revision in 2025. First, the paper ended up growing a bit too long, and as a result of that, we decided to split it into two parts. The first part focuses on the model for the unmyelinated case and its behaviour, and the second part focuses on including the influence of myelination into the model. Second, when the initial version of the manuscript was going through the review process, it became evident that the way the content was presented was somewhat confusing for readers with a background in the experimental side of research into nerve processes. As a result, we went through a major revision, redoing all the numerical simulations with parameters that are closer to what Hodgkin and Huxley used in their classical paper from 1952, where the Hodgkin-Huxley model was initially introduced. The second major change was to change the logic how the specific inductance value is chosen for the numerical example - in the previous version it was chosen by aiming for a specific propagation velocity when the axon radius was chosen as 1 micrometre, in the updated version the value is chosen to get the AP propagation velocity whic
