Recently arxiv:2604.12897 urged that the terminology "neutrinoless double beta decay" should be changed to "Majorana double beta decay" to properly give credit to Majorana, and to focus on the positive aspects of the phenomenon -- supposed creation of matter in the laboratory -- rather than the negative: absence of something, embarrassment over false claims of detection, and a "sociology of suspicion." I argue that the current terminology is more accurate and descriptive, and that the claimed reasons for its adoption are lacking in credibility.
Certain approaches to quantum gravity, such as the one based on the concept of purely virtual particles (fakeons), sacrifice the cause-effect relation at very small scales to reconcile renormalizability with unitarity. Other developments have also urged caution regarding the idea of causality as a fundamental principle. In this paper, we examine the problem from multiple perspectives, including locality and predictivity, and extend the existing skepticism in several directions. Emphasizing the impact of unruly "disruptors", we point out that the illusory arrow of time associated with causality and predictivity is inherently statistical. This renders the cause-effect relation strained at the microscopic level. We also show that causation is a borderline concept that demands belief in entities which can act on nature without being part of it. Ultimately, not only is renouncing microcausality a reasonable price to pay for a consistent and predictive theory of quantum gravity (as is the one based on the fakeon idea), but the very notion of causality is misleading. Resting as it does on metaphysical assumptions, it should therefore be abandoned in fundamental physics.
Belkin and Robertson urged us, half a century ago, to develop a theoretical foundation for understanding what constitutes societal good that can inform information retrieval (IR) research and serve as a basis for determining when we should limit our scientific inquiry in the face of demands that are contradictory to societal good. In this article, I argue that to achieve this, IR should embrace critical theories and practices in our work, and shift away from the dominant liberal frame through which much of the IR community today view societal concerns in context of our research. Unlike the liberal frame, the critical frame explicitly adopts nondomination as its stated goal which can clarify our conceptualization of societal good within the field, provide necessary theoretical underpinning that Belkin and Robertson urged the community to develop, and serve as a basis for critical appraisals of our progress in enacting desired societal change.
The Endless Tuning is a design method for a reliable deployment of artificial intelligence based on a double mirroring process, which pursues both the goals of avoiding human replacement and filling the so-called responsibility gap (Matthias 2004). Originally depicted in (Fabris et al. 2024) and ensuing the relational approach urged therein, it was then actualized in a protocol, implemented in three prototypical applications regarding decision-making processes (respectively: loan granting, pneumonia diagnosis, and art style recognition) and tested with such as many domain experts. Step by step illustrating the protocol, giving insights concretely showing a different voice (Gilligan 1993) in the ethics of artificial intelligence, a philosophical account of technical choices (e.g., a reversed and hermeneutic deployment of XAI algorithms) will be provided in the present study together with the results of the experiments, focusing on user experience rather than statistical accuracy. Even thoroughly employing deep learning models, full control was perceived by the interviewees in the decision-making setting, while it appeared that a bridge can be built between accountability and liabili
In the 6G era, real-time radio resource monitoring and management are urged to support diverse wireless-empowered applications. This calls for fast and accurate estimation on the distribution of the radio resources, which is usually represented by the spatial signal power strength over the geographical environment, known as a radio map. In this paper, we present a cooperative radio map estimation (CRME) approach enabled by the generative adversarial network (GAN), called as GAN-CRME, which features fast and accurate radio map estimation without the transmitters' information. The radio map is inferred by exploiting the interaction between distributed received signal strength (RSS) measurements at mobile users and the geographical map using a deep neural network estimator, resulting in low data-acquisition cost and computational complexity. Moreover, a GAN-based learning algorithm is proposed to boost the inference capability of the deep neural network estimator by exploiting the power of generative AI. Simulation results showcase that the proposed GAN-CRME is even capable of coarse error-correction when the geographical map information is inaccurate.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents capable of autonomous learning and independent decision-making hold great promise for addressing complex challenges across various critical infrastructure domains, including transportation, energy systems, and manufacturing. However, the surge in the design and deployment of AI systems, driven by various stakeholders with distinct and unaligned objectives, introduces a crucial challenge: How can uncoordinated AI systems coexist and evolve harmoniously in shared environments without creating chaos or compromising safety? To address this, we advocate for a fundamental rethinking of existing multi-agent frameworks, such as multi-agent systems and game theory, which are largely limited to predefined rules and static objective structures. We posit that AI agents should be empowered to adjust their objectives dynamically, make compromises, form coalitions, and safely compete or cooperate through evolving relationships and social feedback. Through two case studies in critical infrastructure applications, we call for a shift toward the emergent, self-organizing, and context-aware nature of these multi-agentic AI systems.
Two-dimensional band dispersion of (2$\times$2) superstructure with Bi grown on Ag(111), which has been urged as an ultraflat hexagonal bismuthene, is investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The (2$\times$2)-Bi superstructure can be grown on the Ag(111) surface at low temperatures; it transforms into a surface alloy with a ($\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$) superstructure at 300 K. ARPES measurements reveal the consistency with the band structure of ultraflat bismuthene in previous reports. The band structure of (2$\times$2)-Bi surface remains unchanged with decreasing Ag layer thickness, indicating the limited penetration of Bi p-orbitals into the Ag layer.
Initially used to rank web pages, PageRank has now been applied in many fields. With the growing scale of graph, accelerating PageRank computing is urged and designing parallel algorithm is a feasible solution. In this paper, two parallel PageRank algorithms IFP1 and IFP2 are proposed via improving the state-of-the-art Personalized PageRank algorithm, i.e., Forward Push. Theoretical analysis indicates that, IFP1 can take advantage of the DAG structure of the graph, where the dangling vertices improves the convergence rate and the unreferenced vertices decreases the computation amount. As an improvement of IFP1, IFP2 pushes mass to the dangling vertices only once but rather many times, and thus decreases the computation amount further. Experiments on six data sets illustrate that both IFP1 and IFP2 outperform Power method, where IFP2 with 38 parallelism can be at most 50 times as fast as the Power method.
The last decade has been marked by great interest in the dynamics of vortices moving at high ($>$10\,km/s) velocities in superconductors. However, the flux-flow instability (FFI) prevents its exploration and sets practical limits for the use of vortices in various applications. Even so, FFI has turned into a valuable tool for studying the quasiparticle energy relaxation in superconductors, with the view of enhancement of the single-photon detection capability of micrometer-wide strips operated at large bias currents. In this context, the failure of ``global'' FFI models for materials with strong intrinsic and edge vortex pinning has urged the elaboration of ``local'' FFI models. This chapter outlines the recent advances in the research on FFI and highlights superconductors with perfect edges and weak volume pinning as prospective materials for studying fast vortex dynamics and nonequilibrium superconductivity. This manuscript is based on the author-prepared version of the review published in Encyclopedia of Condensed Matter Physics, vol. 2 (2024) 735--754.
In this {\it case study}, we hope to show why Sheldon Axler was not just wrong, but {\em wrong}, when he urged, in 1995: ``Down with Determinants!''. We first recall how determinants are useful in enumerative combinatorics, and then illustrate three versatile tools (Dodgson's condensation, the holonomic ansatz and constant term evaluations) to operate in tandem to prove a certain intriguing determinantal formula conjectured by the first author. We conclude with a postscript describing yet another, much more efficient, method for evaluating determinants: `ask determinant-guru, Christian Krattenthaler', but advise people only to use it as a last resort, since if we would have used this last method right away, we would not have had the fun of doing it all by ourselves.
The advancement of aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) has urged the lack of a user-friendly framework that can largely lower the difficulty of reproducing state-of-the-art ABSA performance, especially for beginners. To meet the demand, we present \our, a modularized framework built on PyTorch for reproducible ABSA. To facilitate ABSA research, PyABSA supports several ABSA subtasks, including aspect term extraction, aspect sentiment classification, and end-to-end aspect-based sentiment analysis. Concretely, PyABSA integrates 29 models and 26 datasets. With just a few lines of code, the result of a model on a specific dataset can be reproduced. With a modularized design, PyABSA can also be flexibly extended to considered models, datasets, and other related tasks. Besides, PyABSA highlights its data augmentation and annotation features, which significantly address data scarcity. All are welcome to have a try at \url{https://github.com/yangheng95/PyABSA}.
Galactic chemical evolution (GCE), solar analogues or twins, and peculiarities of the solar composition with respect to the twins are inextricably related. We examine GCE parameters from the literature and present newly derived values using a quadratic fit that gives zero for a Solar age (i.e., 4.6 Gyr). We show how the GCE parameters may be used not only to "correct" abundances to the solar age, but to predict relative elemental abundances as a function of age. We address the question of whether the solar abundances are depleted in refractories and enhanced in volatiles and find that the answer is sensitive to the selection of a representative standard. The best quality data sets do not support the notion that the Sun is depleted in refractories and enhanced in volatiles. A simple model allows us to estimate the amount of refractory-rich material missing from the Sun or alternately added to the average solar twin. The model gives between zero and 1.4 earth masses.
Among the essential elements of knowledge management is the use of information and data, as well as the knowledge, skills, and abilities inherent within communities, as well as their ideas, commitments, and motivations for making good decisions as emerging technologies become more prevalent. Numerous leading social scientists in this field have asserted that organisational knowledge should be regarded as a strategic asset. There is a growing awareness of the importance of gathering, locating, capturing, and sharing collective knowledge and expertise of societies, and societies are urged to develop effective and efficient methods of gathering, locating, capturing, and sharing that knowledge in order to deal with problems and to benefit from opportunities. People living in many countries and regions are interested in implementing knowledge management processes and technologies, and many of them have included knowledge management as an integral part of their overall development strategies. The management of knowledge plays an increasingly important role in global economic development (Bell, 1973, 1978). In order to remain relevant in the modern world, organisations should not ignore k
The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the world in an unprecedented way, causing enormous loss of life. Time and again, public health authorities have urged people to become vaccinated to protect themselves and mitigate the spread of the disease. However, vaccine hesitancy has stalled vaccination levels in the United States. This study explores the effect of vaccine hesitancy on the spread of disease by introducing an SIRS-V$_κ$ model, with compartments of susceptible (S), infected (I), recovered (R), and vaccinated (V). We leverage the concept of carrying capacity to account for vaccine hesitancy by defining a vaccine confidence level $κ$, which is the maximum number of people that will become vaccinated during the course of a disease. The inverse of vaccine confidence is vaccine hesitance, $(\frac{1}κ)$. We explore the equilibria of the SIRS-V$_κ$ model and their stability, and illustrate the impact of vaccine hesitance on epidemic spread analytically and via simulations.
A slow $J/ψ$ bump exists in the inclusive $B\to J/ψ+ X$ spectrum, while the softness of $J/ψ$ spectrum in $Υ(1S) \to J/ψ+ X$ decay is in strong contrast with expectations from color octet mechanism. We propose {\it intrinsic} charm as the explanation:the former is due to $\bar B\to J/ψD π$,with three charm quarks in the final state; the latter is just a small fraction of $Υ(1S) \to (c\bar c)_{\rm slow} + 2$"jet" events, where the slow moving $c\bar c$ system evolves into $D^{(*)}$ pairs. Experimental search for these phenomena at B Factories and the Tevatron is strongly urged, as the implications go beyond QCD.
Traffic congestion has become one of the major problems in the urban cities according to the increasing number of vehicles in those cities, obsolete technologies used on the roads of those cities, inappropriate road design, and many other reasons. So, that has urged the need for a more accurate traffic light controlling system; one that will help in maintaining high stability at all levels of demand. This paper introduces a dynamic traffic light phase plan protocol for Single-Isolated Intersections. The developed controlling method was compared with four other methods and showed a good performance in terms of reducing the average and maximum queue lengths, optimizing the given green time amount as needed, and increased the intersections throughput (increased the given green time utilization). In addition, it maintained a good traffic light stability at all levels of demand.
The main goal of this paper is to obtain a formula for the T-equivariant Riemann-Roch number of certain G-spaces which are the finite dimensional models of certain infinite dimensional spaces with Hamiltonian LG-actions, here T is a maximal torus of the semi-simple Lie group G. Unlike its finite dimensional cousin, the formula obtained here only needs to valuate on a finite subgroup of T depending on the 'level' of the LG-action and the dual Coxeter number of G, due to a fundamental cancelation. If the fixed-point sets of elements of the finite subgroup do not intersect the compactification locus used in constructing the finite dimensional model, the fixed point formula has a particularly simple form, which will be shown for the case of Verlinde formula. This paper was written in early 1997 and had limited circulation, before I left academia. The version here has a computer time-stamp 6/10/97. I have been urged by former colleaques to archive this article together with its sequels on the net.
Wheeler's Superspace is the arena in which Geometrodynamics takes place. I review some aspects of its geometrical and topological structure that Wheeler urged us to take seriously in the context of canonical quantum gravity.
The sensitivity of determination of elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix to experimental inputs (particularly $|V_{cb}|$) is discussed and caution in assigning probable errors is urged.
We suggest that the analysis of incomplete contracting developed by law and economics researchers can provide a useful framework for understanding the AI alignment problem and help to generate a systematic approach to finding solutions. We first provide an overview of the incomplete contracting literature and explore parallels between this work and the problem of AI alignment. As we emphasize, misalignment between principal and agent is a core focus of economic analysis. We highlight some technical results from the economics literature on incomplete contracts that may provide insights for AI alignment researchers. Our core contribution, however, is to bring to bear an insight that economists have been urged to absorb from legal scholars and other behavioral scientists: the fact that human contracting is supported by substantial amounts of external structure, such as generally available institutions (culture, law) that can supply implied terms to fill the gaps in incomplete contracts. We propose a research agenda for AI alignment work that focuses on the problem of how to build AI that can replicate the human cognitive processes that connect individual incomplete contracts with this
