DNS of Rayleigh-Darcy convection in a 3D porous domain is performed at Ra $\in [10^3, 10^6]$ to investigate heat-transfer scaling, thermal boundary-layer dynamics, and flow-structure evolution in the unexplored ultimate regime. The Nu exhibits an approximately linear dependence on Ra throughout the investigated range. However, a distinct change in slope is observed at $Ra \approx 4\times10^5$, indicating the onset of the ultimate regime. For $Ra \leq 2.5\times10^5$, our scaling is 6.25% lower than that reported by \cite{hewitt2014high}, while for $Ra \geq 4\times10^5$ our results are within 1.24% of the extrapolated ultimate-regime prediction of \cite{pirozzoli2021towards}. Analysis of thermal structure reveals formation of near-wall protoplumes that merge into large-scale columnar megaplumes. With increasing Ra, the size of the protoplumes decreases, whereas the numbers increase, thus enhancing boundary-layer convection and heat transport. The thermal boundary-layer thickness scales as ~ Ra^{-1} and ~ Nu^{-1}, corroborating the persistence of linear heat-transfer scaling in the ultimate regime. The thermal dissipation is found to be increasingly shifting from the boundary layer to
We employ the novel theory of heterogeneous extreme value statistics to accurately estimate the ultimate world records for the 100-m running race, for men and for women. For this aim we collected data from 1991 through 2023 from thousands of top athletes, using multiple fast times per athlete. We consider the left endpoint of the probability distribution of the running times of a top athlete and define the ultimate world record as the minimum, over all top athletes, of all these endpoints. For men we estimate the ultimate world record to be 9.56 seconds. More prudently, employing this heterogeneous extreme value theory we construct an accurate asymptotic 95% lower confidence bound on the ultimate world record of 9.49 seconds, still quite close to the present world record of 9.58. For the women's 100-meter dash our point estimate of the ultimate world record is 10.34 seconds, somewhat lower than the world record of 10.49. The more prudent 95% lower confidence bound on the women's ultimate world record is 10.20.
We derive asymptotic models for the ultimate regimes in horizontal convection (HC) and pure internally heated convection (IHC), in analogy with our recent (2024) extension of the ultimate-regime model for Rayleigh-Benard convection (RBC). To derive the corresponding models for HC and IHC, we combine turbulent boundary-layer relations with the exact dissipation balances for these two systems. For HC, the resulting scaling relations are consistent with the rigorous transport bound of Siggers et al. (2004). For pure IHC, they are consistent with the exact HC-IHC balance analogy of Wang et al. (2021) and with the rigorous bounds on the convective-flux asymmetry in the equal-temperature-plates configuration (Arslan et al 2021). The main difference between RBC and HC/IHC is that, in the latter two cases, the global kinetic-energy balance does not contain the additional response factor (dimensionless convective heat flux in HC or inverse bulk temperature in IHC), whereas it does in RBC. As a consequence, for fixed Pr, the ultimate-regime scaling exponent is 1/3 for both HC and IHC, rather than 1/2 as in RBC.
A real-valued sequence $f = \{ f(n) \}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ is said to be second-order holonomic if it satisfies a linear recurrence $f (n + 2) = P (n) f (n + 1) + Q (n) f (n)$ for all sufficiently large $n$, where $P, Q \in \mathbb{R}(x)$ are rational functions. We study the ultimate sign of such a sequence, i.e., the repeated pattern that the signs of $f (n)$ follow for sufficiently large $n$. For each $P$, $Q$ we determine all the ultimate signs that $f$ can have, and show how they partition the space of initial values of $f$. This completes the prior work by Neumann, Ouaknine and Worrell, who have settled some restricted cases. As a corollary, it follows that when $P$, $Q$ have rational coefficients, $f$ either has an ultimate sign of length $1$, $2$, $3$, $4$, $6$, $8$ or $12$, or never falls into a repeated sign pattern. We also give a partial algorithm that finds the ultimate sign of $f$ (or tells that there is none) in almost all cases.
Ultimate is a sport in which teams of seven players compete for points by passing a disc into the end zone. A distinctive aspect of Ultimate is that the player holding the disc is unable to move, underscoring the significance of creating space to receive passes. Despite extensive research into space evaluation in sports such as football and basketball, there is a paucity of information available for Ultimate. This study focuses on the 3-on-3 format, which is widely practiced in Ultimate, and evaluates space during offensive play. The data collection process entailed the use of drones for filming and the subsequent correction of the angles for the purpose of obtaining positional data. The model is derived from the pitch control model of soccer and adapted to the rules of Ultimate, where the player holding the disc is stationary. The integration of position and distance weights with pitch control values enables the derivation of space evaluation metrics. The findings of this study indicate that movement to create space and accurate passing into that space are both significant factors in scoring. Our understanding of the early Universe has long been limited by biased galaxy samples selected through various color criteria. With deep JWST infrared imaging, mass-complete galaxy samples can now be studied up to $z \sim 8$ for the first time. However, recent work has revealed systematic uncertainties in measuring physical properties of galaxies based solely on JWST/NIRCam and HST photometry, due to their limited wavelength coverage. This highlights the need for supplementary data, particularly in the rest-frame UV and near-infrared. Here we present the ULTIMATE-deblending project, which will eventually deliver self-consistent UV to radio photometry for galaxies detected in deep JWST surveys, including both NIRCam and MIRI data. In this first paper, we release a 50-band photometric catalog spanning CFHT/U to JWST/MIRI F1800W, covering a total of 627.1 arcmin$^2$ across two JWST/PRIMER fields. We detail the reduction of the JWST imaging data, the photometric procedures, and the spectral-energy-distribution-fitting methodology used to derive the galaxy properties. Compared with photometry including only HST and JWST bands, the inclusion of deblended low-resolution photometry from g
Rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection admits a class of exact steady single-mode solutions describing high-amplitude convection cells. Using a matched asymptotic analysis in the high-Rayleigh-number limit, we obtain a rigorous characterization of their bulk and boundary-layer structure, yielding explicit scaling laws for the Nusselt and Reynolds numbers, including their dependence on the horizontal wavenumber. We show that, for suitable wavenumbers, these solutions attain the diffusivity-free ultimate scalings frequently assumed for geophysical and astrophysical convection, with additional enhancing logarithmic corrections. This reveals a specific mechanism through which rapidly rotating convection can approach ultimate heat transport via coherent columnar structures with well-defined horizontal scales.
As a key technology in metaversa, wireless ultimate extended reality (XR) has attracted extensive attentions from both industry and academia. However, the stringent latency and ultra-high data rates requirements have hindered the development of wireless ultimate XR. Instead of transmitting the original source data bit-by-bit, semantic communications focus on the successful delivery of semantic information contained in the source, which have shown great potentials in reducing the data traffic of wireless systems. Inspired by semantic communications, this article develops a joint semantic sensing, rendering, and communication framework for wireless ultimate XR. In particular, semantic sensing is used to improve the sensing efficiency by exploring the spatial-temporal distributions of semantic information. Semantic rendering is designed to reduce the costs on semantically-redundant pixels. Next, semantic communications are adopted for high data transmission efficiency in wireless ultimate XR. Then, two case studies are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Finally, potential research directions are identified to boost the development of semantic-aware wi
We study fixpoints of operators on lattices. To this end we introduce the notion of an approximation of an operator. We order approximations by means of a precision ordering. We show that each lattice operator O has a unique most precise or ultimate approximation. We demonstrate that fixpoints of this ultimate approximation provide useful insights into fixpoints of the operator O. We apply our theory to logic programming and introduce the ultimate Kripke-Kleene, well-founded and stable semantics. We show that the ultimate Kripke-Kleene and well-founded semantics are more precise then their standard counterparts We argue that ultimate semantics for logic programming have attractive epistemological properties and that, while in general they are computationally more complex than the standard semantics, for many classes of theories, their complexity is no worse.
The major problem of multiparameter quantum estimation theory is to find an ultimate measurement scheme to go beyond the standard quantum limits that each quasi-classical estimation measurement is limited by. Although, in some specifics quantum protocols without environmental noise, the ultimate sensitivity of a multiparameter quantum estimation can beat the standard quantum limit. However, the presence of noise imposes limitations on the enhancement of precision due to the inevitable existence of environmental fluctuations. Here, we address the motivation behind the usage of Gaussian quantum resources and their advantages in reaching the standard quantum limits under realistic noise. In this context, our work aims to explore the ultimate limits of precision for the simultaneous estimation of a pair of parameters that characterize the displacement channel acting on Gaussian probes and subjected to open dynamics. More precisely, we focus on a general two-mode mixed squeezed displaced thermal state, after reducing it to various Gaussian probes states, like; a two-mode pure squeezed vacuum, two-mode pure displaced vacuum, two-mode mixed displaced thermal, two-mode mixed squeezed therm
Creating finite element models for simulation of bone behaviour, fracture occurrence and propagation requires feeding the system with adequate mechanical data. To date, little is known about the mechanical behaviour of long canine bones, and in cases of modelling a bone-breakage scenario the ultimate strain at failure still needs to be determined. Extrapolation from human literature or other species is uninteresting as differences of mechanical properties between species are expected (Vahey et al, 1987) [1]. Our purpose was to measure the ultimate tensile strain of canine long bones by Digital Image Correlation (DIC), an optical technique to measure strain under load and a promising measurement method for our purpose. Tension tests of cortical bone strips and flexion tests of entire bones were performed, and the ultimate tensile strain was measured and compared between different specimen and testing scenarios.
A tropical matrix is a matrix defined over the max-plus semiring. For such matrices, there exist several non-coinciding notions of rank: the row rank, the column rank, the Schein/Barvinok rank, the Kapranov rank, or the tropical rank, among others. In the present paper, we show that there exists a natural notion of ultimate rank for the powers of a tropical matrix, which does not depend on the underlying notion of rank. Furthermore, we provide a simple formula for the ultimate rank of a matrix which can therefore be computed in polynomial time. Then we turn our attention to finitely generated semigroups of matrices, for which our notion of ultimate rank is generalized naturally. We provide both combinatorial and geometric characterizations of semigroups having maximal ultimate rank. As a byproduct, we obtain a polynomial algorithm to decide if the ultimate rank of a finitely generated semigroup is maximal.
Virtual reality 360-degree videos will become the first prosperous online VR application. VR 360 videos are data-hungry and latency-sensitive that pose unique challenges to the networking infrastructure. In this paper, we focus on the ultimate VR 360 that satisfies human eye fidelity. The ultimate VR 360 requires downlink 1.5 Gbps for viewing and uplink 6.6 Gbps for live broadcasting, with round-trip time of less than 8.3 ms. On the other hand, wireless access to VR 360 services is preferred over wire-line transmission because of the better user experience and the safety concern (e.g., tripping hazard). We explore in this paper whether the most advanced wireless technologies from both cellular communications and WiFi communications support the ultimate VR 360. Specifically, we consider 5G in cellular communications, IEEE 802.11ac (operating in 5GHz) and IEEE 802.11ad (operating in 60GHz) in WiFi communications. According to their performance specified in their standards and/or empirical measurements, we have the following findings: (1) Only 5G has the potential to support both the the ultimate VR 360 viewing and live broadcasting. However, it is difficult for 5G to support multiple
This paper introduces the notions of stability, ultimate boundedness, and positive invariance for stochastic systems in the view of risk. More specifically, those notions are defined in terms of the worst-case Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR), which quantifies the worst-case conditional expectation of losses exceeding a certain threshold over a set of possible uncertainties. Those notions allow us to focus our attention on the tail behavior of stochastic systems in the analysis of dynamical systems and the design of controllers. Furthermore, some event-triggered control strategies that guarantee ultimate boundedness and positive invariance with specified bounds are derived using the obtained results and illustrated using numerical examples.
The precise measurement of a magnetic field is one of the most fundamental and important tasks in quantum metrology. Although extensive studies on quantum magnetometry have been carried out over past decades, the ultimate precision that can be achieved for the estimation of all three components of a magnetic field with entangled probe states under the parallel scheme remains unknown. Here we present the ultimate lower bound for the sum of arbitrarily weighted variances in the estimation of all three components of a magnetic field under the parallel scheme and show that this lower bound can be achieved for sufficiently large N. The optimal entangled probe state that achieves the ultimate precision is also explicitly constructed. The obtained precision sets the ultimate limit for the multi-parameter quantum magnetometry under the parallel scheme, which is of fundamental interest and importance in quantum metrology. Our approach also provides a way to characterize the tradeoff among the precisions of multiple parameters that arise from the constraints on the probe states.
What is the final state of turbulence when the driving parameter approaches to infinity? For thermal turbulence, in 1962, Kraichnan proposed a so-called ultimate scaling dependence of the heat transport (quantified by the Nusselt number $\text{Nu}$) on the Rayleigh number ($\text{Ra}$), which can be extrapolated to arbitrarily high $\text{Ra}$. The existence of Kraichnan ultimate scaling has been intensively debated in the past decades. In this work, using a supergravitational thermal convection system, with an effective gravity up to 100 times the Earth's gravity, both Rayleigh number and shear Reynolds number can be boosted due to the increase of the buoyancy driving and the additional Coriolis forces. Over a decade of $\text{Ra}$ range, we demonstrate the existence of Kraichnan-like ultimate regime with four direct evidences: the ultimate scaling dependence of $\text{Nu}$ versus $\text{Ra}$; the appearance of turbulent velocity boundary layer profile; the enhanced strength of the shear Reynolds number; the new statistical properties of local temperature fluctuations. The present findings will greatly improve the understanding of the flow dynamics in geophysical and astrophysical
Turbulent convection plays a crucial role in many natural environments, ranging from Earth ocean, mantle and outer core, to various astrophysical systems. For such flows with extremely strong thermal driving, an ultimate scaling was proposed for the heat flux and velocity. Despite numerous experimental and numerical studies, a conclusive observation of the ultimate regime has not been reached yet. Here we show that the ultimate scaling can be perfectly realized once the thermal boundary layer is fully decoupled from the viscous boundary layer and locates inside the turbulent bulk. The heat flux can be greatly enhanced by one order of magnitude. Our results provide concrete evidences for the appearance of the ultimate state when the entire thermal boundary layer is embedded in the turbulent region, which is probably the case in many natural convection systems.
We show that there are polynomial-time algorithms to compute maximum independent sets in the categorical products of two cographs and two splitgraphs. The ultimate categorical independence ratio of a graph G is defined as lim_{k --> infty} α(G^k)/n^k. The ultimate categorical independence ratio is polynomial for cographs, permutation graphs, interval graphs, graphs of bounded treewidth and splitgraphs. When G is a planar graph of maximal degree three then alpha(G \times K_4) is NP-complete. We present a PTAS for the ultimate categorical independence ratio of planar graphs. We present an O^*(n^{n/3}) exact, exponential algorithm for general graphs. We prove that the ultimate categorical independent domination ratio for complete multipartite graphs is zero, except when the graph is complete bipartite with color classes of equal size (in which case it is 1/2).
We consider the decidability and complexity of the Ultimate Positivity Problem, which asks whether all but finitely many terms of a given rational linear recurrence sequence (LRS) are positive. Using lower bounds in Diophantine approximation concerning sums of S-units, we show that for simple LRS (those whose characteristic polynomial has no repeated roots) the Ultimate Positivity Problem is decidable in polynomial space. If we restrict to simple LRS of a fixed order then we obtain a polynomial-time decision procedure. As a complexity lower bound we show that Ultimate Positivity for simple LRS is hard for co$\exists\mathbb{R}$, i.e., the class of problems solvable in the universal theory of the reals (which lies between coNP and PSPACE).
Based on the first principles calculation combined with quasi-harmonic approximation, in this work we focus on the analysis of temperature dependent lattice geometries, thermal expansion coefficients, elastic constants and ultimate strength of graphene and graphyne. For the linear thermal expansion coefficient, both graphene and graphyne show a negative region in the low temperature regime. This coefficient increases up to be positive at high temperatures. Graphene has superior mechanical properties, with Young modulus E11=371.0 N/m, E22=378.2 N/m and ultimate tensile strength of 119.2 GPa at room temperature. Based on our analysis, it is found that graphene's mechanical properties have strong resistance against temperature increase up to 1200 K. Graphyne also shows good mechanical properties, with Young modulus E11=224.7 N/m, E22=223.9 N/m and ultimate tensile strength of 81.2 GPa at room temperature, but graphyne's mechanical properties have a weaker resistance with respect to the increase of temperature than that of graphene.
