Augmentation technologies, fueled by Artificial Intelligence (AI), are undergoing a process of adaptation and normalization geared to everyday users in various roles as practitioners, educators, and students. While new innovations, applications, and algorithms are developed as augmentation technology, Chapter 1 focuses on human subjects, contexts, and rhetorical strategies proposed for them by external actors. The chapter discusses core functions of technical and professional communication and provides rationale for positioning technical and professional communicators (TPCs) to understand augmentation technologies and AI as a means to design ethical futures across this work. An overview of Augmentation Technologies and AI- An Ethical Design Futures Framework serves as a guide for reframing professional practice and pedagogy to promote digital and AI literacy surrounding the ethical design, adoption, and adaptation of augmentation technologies. The chapter concludes with an overview of the remaining chapters in this book.
Augmentation technologies are undergoing a process of enculturation due to many factors, one being the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), or what the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) terms the AI wave or AI boom. Chapter 3 focuses critical attention on the hyped assumption that sophisticated, emergent, and embodied augmentation technologies will improve lives, literacy, cultures, arts, economies, and social contexts. The chapter begins by discussing the problem of ambiguity with AI terminology, which it aids with a description of the WIPO Categorization of AI Technologies Scheme. It then draws on media and communication studies to explore concepts such as agents, agency, power, and agentive relationships between humans and robots. The chapter focuses on the development of non-human agents in industry as a critical factor in the rise of augmentation technologies. It looks at how marketing communication enculturates future users to adopt and adapt to the technology. Scholars are charting the significant ways that people are drawn further into commercial digital landscapes, such as the Metaverse concept, in post-internet society. It concludes by examining recent clai
Although blockchain technology was first introduced in 2008 and materialised in 2009, the early usage of blockchain were mainly limited to financial technologies, particularly cryptocurrencies. Later, blockchain became a widespread emerging technology, utilised in multifaceted sectors and applications. In fact, various new and innovative application of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies are still continuously being researched and explored. On the other hand, smart-contracts were first introduced in 1990s, however, it did not gain enough popularity until being integrated with blockchain technologies lately. The duo lately been seen as the key to many innovations in various industries and sectors. So, we took data from 1445 blockchain-related patent documents and tried to map out the historical and current trends in patenting activities in the blockchain field. This helps us get a better grasp of how blockchain technologies are evolving and being tracked. In addition to serving as an indicator of science and technology growth, patents are also used to judge the research potential and development of a particular technology.
Cryptoasset systems often bind cryptographic key control to financial control: losing a wallet seed, custody share, hardware device, or smart-account credential can remove spend authority, while compromised recovery can enable theft. Existing work treats recovery through separate vocabularies--key backup, secret sharing, account recovery, credential re-issuance, social recovery, and asset migration--making mechanisms and tradeoffs difficult to compare. This paper presents a Systematization of Knowledge (SoK) on cryptographic key recovery for cryptoasset custody and financial technologies. Starting from a 118-paper systematic-review discovery corpus, we derive a 77-paper synthesis corpus and code each retained system in a master matrix covering recovered objects, recovery semantics, mechanisms, enrollment and storage, authorization, trust placement, failure events, post-recovery state, validation evidence, deployment status, privacy, usability, and limitations. The matrix supports an axis-first taxonomy that separates secret-restoring, hybrid, control-restoring, forensic/extractive, and framework-oriented recovery. Our central observation is that recovery is not a single operation:
Physics is living an era of unprecedented cross-fertilization among the different areas of science. In this perspective review, we discuss the manifold impact that ultracold-atom quantum technologies can have in fundamental and applied science through platforms for quantum simulation, computation, metrology and sensing. We illustrate how the engineering of table-top experiments with atom technologies is engendering applications to understand problems in condensed matter and fundamental physics, cosmology and astrophysics, foundational aspects of quantum mechanics, quantum chemistry and the emerging field of quantum biology. We take the perspective of two main approaches, i.e. creating quantum analogues and building quantum simulators, highlighting that independently of the ultimate goal of a universal quantum computer to be met, the remarkable transformative effects of these achievements remain unchanged. We convey three main messages. First, atomic quantum technologies have enabled a new way in which quantum technologies are used for fundamental science, even beyond the advancement of knowledge, which is characterised by truly cross-disciplinary research, extended interplay betwee
To accommodate new applications such as extended reality, fully autonomous vehicular networks and the metaverse, next generation wireless networks are going to be subject to much more stringent performance requirements than the fifth-generation (5G) in terms of data rates, reliability, latency, and connectivity. It is thus necessary to develop next generation advanced transceiver (NGAT) technologies for efficient signal transmission and reception. In this tutorial, we explore the evolution of NGAT from three different perspectives. Specifically, we first provide an overview of new-field NGAT technology, which shifts from conventional far-field channel models to new near-field channel models. Then, three new-form NGAT technologies and their design challenges are presented, including reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, flexible antennas, and holographic multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. Subsequently, we discuss recent advances in semantic-aware NGAT technologies, which can utilize new metrics for advanced transceiver designs. Finally, we point out other promising transceiver technologies for future research.
For the upcoming 6G wireless networks, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces are an essential technology, enabling dynamic beamforming and signal manipulation in both reflective and transmissive modes. It is expected to utilize frequency bands in the millimeter-wave and THz, which presents unique opportunities but also significant challenges. The selection of switching technologies that can support high-frequency operation with minimal loss and high efficiency is particularly complex. In this work, we demonstrate the potential of advanced components such as Schottky diodes, memristor switches, liquid metal-based switches, phase change materials, and RF-SOI technology in RIS designs as an alternative to overcome limitations inherent in traditional technologies in D-band (110-170 GHz).
We explore in this paper the interests and challenges of students regarding web and mobile technologies. Our study is based on a survey among undergraduate students, students that attend a Web Programming course. In particular, we study the challenges students have in following a successful career in web or mobile development and we have found that the most important one is the large effort required for keeping up to date with the fast changing web and mobile technologies. Overall, the attitude of the surveyed undergraduate students towards web development and mobile development is rather positive, as more than 60% of them said that they are interested in a career in web or mobile development. We also found out that most of them prefer working on back-end web technologies. As for the specific web technologies students are interested on, they are highly varied. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the interests and challenges of students regarding web and mobile technologies, which can guide the development of effective teaching and learning approaches in this area.
Age verification, which is a mandatory legal requirement for delivering certain age-appropriate services or products, has recently been emphasized around the globe to ensure online safety for children. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has facilitated the recent development of some cutting-edge age-verification technologies, particularly using biometrics. However, successful deployment and mass acceptance of these technologies are significantly dependent on the corresponding socio-economic and regulatory context. This paper reviews such key dynamics for improvising age-verification technologies in Canada. It is particularly essential for such technologies to be inclusive, transparent, adaptable, privacy-preserving, and secure. Effective collaboration between academia, government, and industry entities can help to meet the growing demands for age-verification services in Canada while maintaining a user-centric approach.
Non-volatile Memory (NVM) technologies present a promising alternative to traditional volatile memories such as SRAM and DRAM. Due to the limited availability of real NVM devices, simulators play a crucial role in architectural exploration and hardware-software co-design. This tutorial presents a simulation toolchain through four detailed case studies, showcasing its applicability to various domains of system design, including hybrid main-memory and cache, compute-in-memory, and wear-leveling design. These case studies provide the reader with practical insights on customizing the toolchain for their specific research needs. The source code is open-sourced.
Every new generation of mobile networks brings significant advances in two segments, enhancement of the network parameters within the legacy technologies and introduction of new technologies enabling new paradigms in designing the networks. In the first class of enhancements the effort is to increase data rates, improve energy efficiency, enhance connectivity, reduce data transmission latency etc. In the second class of innovations for 6G and 7G, we anticipate focus on optimum integration of advanced ML and AI in general, and quantum computing with the continuous interest in the satellite networks for optimal quantum key distribution . By introducing quantum technology 7G will be able to speed up computing processes in the net, enhance network security as well as to enable distributed QC, which is a new paradigm in computer sciences. Using advanced networks as a basic ingredient of inter system integration, here we focus only on the second segment of anticipated innovations in networking and present a survey of the subset of potential technology enablers for the above concept with special emphasis on the inter dependency of the solutions chosen in different segments of the network.
While language technologies have advanced significantly, current approaches fail to address the complex sociocultural dimensions of linguistic preservation. AI Thinking proposes a meaning-centered framework that would transform technological development from creating tools FOR communities to co-creating solutions WITH them. This approach recognizes that meaningful solutions emerge through the interplay of cultural understanding, community agency, and technological innovation. The proposal articulates a holistic methodology and a five-layer technological ecosystem where communities maintain control over their linguistic and cultural knowledge representation. This systematic integration of community needs, cultural preservation, and advanced capabilities could revolutionize how we approach linguistic diversity preservation in the digital age.
As a key enabling technology of the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G communication networks, millimeter wave (mmWave) backscatter has undergone noteworthy advancements and brought significant improvement to prevailing sensing and communication systems. Past few years have witnessed growing efforts in innovating mmWave backscatter transmitters (e.g., tags and metasurfaces) and the corresponding techniques, which provide efficient information embedding and fine-grained signal manipulation for mmWave backscatter technologies. These efforts have greatly enabled a variety of appealing applications, such as long-range localization, roadside-to-vehicle communication, coverage optimization and large-scale identification. In this paper, we carry out a comprehensive survey to systematically summarize the works related to the topic of mmWave backscatter. Firstly, we introduce the scope of this survey and provide a taxonomy to distinguish two categories of mmWave backscatter research based on the operating principle of the backscatter transmitter: modulation-based and relay-based. Furthermore, existing works in each category are grouped and introduced in detail, with their common applications,

This paper provides an assessment of experiences and understanding of digital technologies from within an African place. It provides philosophical reflections upon the introduction and existence - appropriation - of digital technologies. Digital technologies are inherently linked to a colonialising power and, in general, unaligned with local, African ways of knowing. Imported technologies are set in modern, universalised doing and unsensitive to the importance of aligned being in African contexts. Sensitivities, it is argued, can be fostered by a decolonial turn, where focus shifts from the individual to the community.

Among the essential elements of knowledge management is the use of information and data, as well as the knowledge, skills, and abilities inherent within communities, as well as their ideas, commitments, and motivations for making good decisions as emerging technologies become more prevalent. Numerous leading social scientists in this field have asserted that organisational knowledge should be regarded as a strategic asset. There is a growing awareness of the importance of gathering, locating, capturing, and sharing collective knowledge and expertise of societies, and societies are urged to develop effective and efficient methods of gathering, locating, capturing, and sharing that knowledge in order to deal with problems and to benefit from opportunities. People living in many countries and regions are interested in implementing knowledge management processes and technologies, and many of them have included knowledge management as an integral part of their overall development strategies. The management of knowledge plays an increasingly important role in global economic development (Bell, 1973, 1978). In order to remain relevant in the modern world, organisations should not ignore k
Traditional logical equivalence checking (LEC) which plays a major role in entire chip design process faces challenges of meeting the requirements demanded by the many emerging technologies that are based on logic models different from standard complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS). In this paper, we propose a LEC framework to be employed in the verification process of beyond-CMOS circuits. Our LEC framework is compatible with existing CMOS technologies, but, also able to check features and capabilities that are unique to beyond-CMOS technologies. For instance, the performance of some emerging technologies benefits from ultra-deep pipelining and verification of such circuits requires new models and algorithms. We, therefore, present the Multi-Cycle Input Dependency (MCID) circuit model which is a novel model representation of design to explicitly capture the dependency of primary outputs of the circuit on sequences of internal signals and inputs. Embedding the proposed circuit model and several structural checking modules, the process of verification can be independent of the underlying technology and signaling. We benchmark the proposed framework on post-synthesis rapid s
Technologies operating on the basis of quantum mechanical laws and resources such as phase coherence and entanglement are expected to revolutionize our future. Quantum technologies are often divided into four main pillars: computing, simulation, communication, and sensing & metrology. Moreover, a great deal of interest is currently also nucleating around energy-related quantum technologies. In this Perspective, we focus on advanced superconducting materials, van der Waals materials, and moiré quantum matter, summarizing recent exciting developments and highlighting a wealth of potential applications, ranging from high-energy experimental and theoretical physics to quantum materials science and energy storage.
The research goal is to investigate the evolution of the concept of utility computing in the works of foreign researchers in the years 1959-1966. First the A. O. Mann's results and expanded overview of the D. F. Parkhill's results on the concept of computer (information) utility were introduced in the domestic scientific circulation. Functionally identity of the computer utility and cloud computing concepts was proved, as well as refined the primary sources of cloud service models. There was proposed the interpretation of the "cloud technologies of learning" concept. Continuity of the development of cloud technologies over the past 55 years and their relationship with the development of ICT in general was concluded. The research results make it possible to determine the prospects of the development of cloud computing in general and cloud technologies of learning in particular.
