The rapid expansion of the Fast Radio Burst (FRB) field has been accompanied by a simultaneous growth of FRB conferences. While these meetings are essential for interacting with other researchers and establishing collaborations, many remain only accessible to those with substantial travel funding, flexible schedules, or geographical proximity. This introduces barriers that predominantly affect early career researchers (ECRs) and people from under-resourced regions, limiting the growth, diversity, and sustainability of the community. To address these issues, the FRB 2025 conference, held in Montréal in July 2025 with over 200 participants, was designed to prioritize inclusivity and accessibility alongside scientific excellence. In this work, we describe how we implemented these goals, including: organizing committees spearheaded by ECRs, a fully hybrid format including YouTube livestreams, low registration fees, a pedagogical day at the beginning of the conference, local vegetarian catering, and the implementation of flash-talks instead of posters. In July 2025, the University of Adelaide hosted the Astronomical Society of Australia's Annual Scientific Meeting on its North Terrace campus. We ran the conference in a hybrid mode, with options for in-person and online attendance. This report details the procedures that we used to enable the online mode of the conference at minimal cost and minimal inconvenience to the in-person attendees. We discuss our choices of hardware and software and how we integrated these systems together. We summarise our experience of organising a local AV team and the procedures that we set for running the AV in each session. We present statistics of the online attendance numbers and post-conference survey feedback, and discuss the lessons we feel other organisers may particularly be able to learn from.
In spring 1949 about 70 physicists from eight countries met in Florence to discuss recent trends in statistical mechanics. This scientific gathering, co-organized by the Commission on Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and the Italian Physical Society (SIF), initiated a tradition of IUPAP-sponsored international conferences on statistical mechanics that lasts to this day. In 1977, when this conference series took the name of StatPhys, the foundational role of the Florence conference was recognized by retrospectively naming it StatPhys1. This paper examines the dual scientific and social significance of the conference, situating it in the broader contexts of the post-World War II reconstruction in Italian physics and of the revitalization of the international science organization. Through an analysis of IUPAP archives and Italian records, we illustrate how the event's success hinged on the aligned objectives of its organizers. This volume presents the proceedings of the 20th International Conference on Knowledge, Information and Creativity Support Systems (KICSS 2025), held in Nagaoka, Japan, on December 3-5, 2025. The conference, organized in cooperation with the IEICE Proceedings Series, provides a multidisciplinary forum for researchers in artificial intelligence, knowledge engineering, human-computer interaction, and creativity support systems. The proceedings include peer-reviewed papers accepted through a double-blind review process. Selected papers have been recommended for publication in IEICE Transactions on Information and Systems after an additional peer-review process.
In this conference summary I first provide some historical notes on my own collaboration with You-Hua Chu and on the discovery of X-rays from superbubbles by Margarita Rosado S. I then consider the central subject of the conference, stellar feedback, and how interactions between stellar winds and the interstellar medium can limit or enhance the effects of feedback compared to models including only supernova explosions. Finally, I review results in other areas covered by the conference, including planet and star formation, nova and supernova remnants, different topics in stellar evolution and interaction with the interstellar medium, star clusters, observational surveys, and observational and numerical techniques.
The proceeding gives a summary of the experimental results presented at the Moriond 2024 conference (electroweak interactions and unified theory session), focussing on the latest measurements. A variety of topics were covered in the various sessions of the conference including H boson properties, measurements in the electroweak and top quark sectors, flavour and neutrino physics, searches for dark matter and physics beyond the standard model, as well as astroparticle and precision physics.
Recently, almost all conferences have moved to virtual mode due to the pandemic-induced restrictions on travel and social gathering. Contrary to in-person conferences, virtual conferences face the challenge of efficiently scheduling talks, accounting for the availability of participants from different timezones and their interests in attending different talks. A natural objective for conference organizers is to maximize efficiency, e.g., total expected audience participation across all talks. However, we show that optimizing for efficiency alone can result in an unfair virtual conference schedule, where individual utilities for participants and speakers can be highly unequal. To address this, we formally define fairness notions for participants and speakers, and derive suitable objectives to account for them. As the efficiency and fairness objectives can be in conflict with each other, we propose a joint optimization framework that allows conference organizers to design schedules that balance (i.e., allow trade-offs) among efficiency, participant fairness and speaker fairness objectives. The number of citations received by papers often exhibits imbalances in terms of author attributes such as country of affiliation and gender. While recent studies have quantified citation imbalance in terms of the authors' gender in journal papers, the computer science discipline, where researchers frequently present their work at conferences, may exhibit unique patterns in gendered citation imbalance. Additionally, understanding how network properties in citations influence citation imbalances remains challenging due to a lack of suitable reference models. In this paper, we develop a family of reference models for citation networks and investigate gender imbalance in citations between papers published in computer science conferences. By deploying these reference models, we found that homophily in citations is strongly associated with gendered citation imbalance in computer science, whereas heterogeneity in the number of citations received per paper has a relatively minor association with it. Furthermore, we found that the gendered citation imbalance is most pronounced in papers published in the highest-ranked conferences, is present across different subfields, and extends to citat
The sixth international conference AsiaHaptics 2024 took place at Sunway University, Malaysia on 28-30 October 2024. AsiaHaptics is an exhibition type of international conference dedicated to the haptics domain, engaging presentations accompanied by hands-on demonstrations. It presents the state-of-the-art of the diverse haptics (touch)-related research, including perception and illusion, development of haptics devices, and applications to a wide variety of fields such as education, medicine, telecommunication, navigation and entertainment. This proceedings volume is a valuable resource not only for active haptics researchers, but also for general readers wishing to understand the status quo in this interdisciplinary area of science and technology.
Conference publications in computer science (CS) have attracted scholarly attention due to their unique status as a main research outlet unlike other science fields where journals are dominantly used for communicating research findings. One frequent research question has been how different conference and journal publications are, considering a paper as a unit of analysis. This study takes an author-based approach to analyze publishing patterns of 517,763 scholars who have ever published both in CS conferences and journals for the last 57 years, as recorded in DBLP. The analysis shows that the majority of CS scholars tend to make their scholarly debut, publish more papers, and collaborate with more coauthors in conferences than in journals. Importantly, conference papers seem to serve as a distinct channel of scholarly communication, not a mere preceding step to journal publications: coauthors and title words of authors across conferences and journals tend not to overlap much. This study corroborates findings of previous studies on this topic from a distinctive perspective and suggests that conference authorship in CS calls for more special attention from scholars and administrators
Good (Frequentist) statistical practice requires that statistical tests be performed in order to determine if the phenomenon being observed could plausibly occur by chance if the null hypothesis is false. Good practice also requires that a test is not performed if the study is underpowered: if the number of observations is not sufficiently large to be able to reliably detect the effect one hypothesizes, even if the effect exists. Running underpowered studies runs the risk of false negative results. This creates tension in the guidelines and expectations for computer science education conferences: while things are clear for studies with a large number of observations, researchers should in fact not compute p-values and perform statistical tests if the number of observations is too small. The issue is particularly live in CSed venues, since class sizes where those issues are salient are common. We outline the considerations for when to compute and when not to compute p-values in different settings encountered by computer science education researchers. A significant gender disparity is widely known to occur within the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Women are both under-represented in their participation in Australian STEM education (compared to their fraction within the population at large), and face a much higher attrition rate from STEM subjects throughout secondary and tertiary education. Even within STEM careers the proportion of women frequently generally decreases with increasing position of seniority. In 2015 organisers and members of the Australian Space Research Community began to analyse the data from participants of the Australian Space Research Conference, in order to derive statistics relating to the gender balance of the conference. In this paper, the data from the most recent conference (held on the Gold Coast, in September 2018) is analysed, considering the gender demographics of delegates, presenters (within numerous categories), and awards. This year, we also present the dimensions of career type and academic level of conference attendees. This article reflects on our experiences providing family-support services to a large, interdisciplinary ACM conference (CHI2018) including, the policy decisions, the challenges, and the successes. The article incorporates empirical data collected from pre- and post-conference surveys, observed use of the services, and aspirational aims for future conferences. We are discussing best practices and recommendations to facilitate the implementation of child support services at other conferences. We believe our article will be of great interest to both practitioners and academics in expanding the inclusivity and family support provided by ACM conferences and beyond.
Radio Exploration of Planetary Habitability was the fifth in the series of American Astronomical Society's Topical Conference Series. Notable aspects of the conference included the interdisciplinary nature of both the topics and the intellectual breadth of the participants, the diversity of approaches to studying this topic presented by recent discoveries and of the participants themselves, the expanding meaning of the topic of "star-planet interactions," and the expectation of an increasingly statistical approach to the topic. Potential areas of future research include the actual extent to which planetary magnetic fields shield planetary atmospheres; the planetary dynamo process itself, particularly once multiple extrasolar planetary magnetic fields are confirmed; and "planet-star interactions." A major major topic of the conference concerned observational opportunities, highlighted by a number of new or upcoming, specialized observatories to observe exoplanets especially at radio wavelengths. This article describes reflections on the Fifth International Conference on Women in Physics which was a conference attended by 215 female physicists and a few male physicists from 49 different countries. The article focuses on the barriers that women face in their professional advancement in physics and the extent to which the situation is different in various countries.
This report is the summary of the Eighth International Conference on Quarks and Nuclear Physics (QNP2018). Hadron and nuclear physics is the field to investigate high-density quantum many-body systems bound by strong interactions. It is intended to clarify matter generation of universe and properties of quark-hadron many-body systems. The QNP is an international conference which covers a wide range of hadron and nuclear physics, including quark and gluon structure of hadrons, hadron spectroscopy, hadron interactions and nuclear structure, hot and cold dense matter, and experimental facilities. First, I introduce the current status of the hadron and nuclear physics field related to this conference. Next, the organization of the conference is explained, and a brief overview of major recent developments is discussed by selecting topics from discussions at the plenary sessions. Current research environments are witnessing high enormities of presentations occurring in different sessions at academic conferences. This situation makes it difficult for researchers (especially juniors) to attend the right presentation session(s) for effective collaboration. In this paper, we propose an innovative venue recommendation algorithm to enhance smart conference participation. Our proposed algorithm, Social Aware Recommendation of Venues and Environments (SARVE), computes the Pearson Correlation and social characteristic information of conference participants. SARVE further incorporates the current context of both the smart conference community and participants in order to model a recommendation process using distributed community detection. Through the integration of the above computations and techniques, we are able to recommend presentation sessions of active participant presenters that may be of high interest to a particular participant. We evaluate SARVE using a real world dataset. Our experimental results demonstrate that SARVE outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.
Conference paper assignment, i.e., the task of assigning paper submissions to reviewers, presents multi-faceted issues for recommender systems research. Besides the traditional goal of predicting `who likes what?', a conference management system must take into account aspects such as: reviewer capacity constraints, adequate numbers of reviews for papers, expertise modeling, conflicts of interest, and an overall distribution of assignments that balances reviewer preferences with conference objectives. Among these, issues of modeling preferences and tastes in reviewing have traditionally been studied separately from the optimization of paper-reviewer assignment. In this paper, we present an integrated study of both these aspects. First, due to the paucity of data per reviewer or per paper (relative to other recommender systems applications) we show how we can integrate multiple sources of information to learn paper-reviewer preference models. Second, our models are evaluated not just in terms of prediction accuracy but in terms of the end-assignment quality. Four parallel workshops were organized at the 1996 Girona Conference, "Blazars, Black Holes, and Jets", with conference attendees free to choose which session they would like to attend. The chosen topics were ``Jet Models'', ``Multi-Frequency Support for High-Energy Observations'', ``Monitoring of Blazars'', and ``Host Galaxies and Environments''. While the individual sessions focused on their assigned topic, the goals of all the sessions were to identify points of agreement in the field and to set a course for future research. Following several hours of lively discussions, each session chair presented to the entire conference a summary of their own group's discussion. In this collective summary we have tried to reproduce the main opinions and ideas that were generated during the workshops.
