This contribution tries to highlight the importance of Minkowski's ``Raum und Zeit'' lecture in a ``negative'' way, where {\it negative} is taken in the photographic sense of reversing lights and shades. Indeed, we focus on the ``shades'' of Minkowski's text, i.e. what is missing, or misunderstood. In particular, we focus on two issues: (i) why are Poincaré's pioneering contributions to four-dimensional geometry not quoted by Minkowski (while he abundantly quoted them a few months before the Cologne lecture)?, and (ii) did Minkowski fully grasp the physical (and existential) meaning of ``time'' within spacetime? We think that this ``negative'' approach (and the contrast between Poincaré's and Minkowski's attitudes towards physics) allows one to better grasp the boldness of the {\it revolutionary} step taken by Minkowski in his Cologne lecture.
Quantum field theory unifies concepts from quantum theory and from special relativity. Its mathematically rigorous description is quite intricate and is only partially understood; this is particularly true for the construction of operators corresponding to measurements at a space-time point or in a bounded space-time region. We explain this fact in simplified examples on 1+1 dimensional space-time, namely in so-called integrable models. We give a characterization of local operators by means of the analyticity properties of their coefficients in a certain series expansion. This also allows us to explicitly construct examples of local operators.
The quantum theory of Ur-alternatives of Carl Friedrich von Weizsaecker tries to constitute general quantum theory based on the concept of logical alternatives in time. Based on this interpretation of quantum theory the existence of free objects in space, their symmetry properties and their interactions shall be inferred. The alternatives are represented by binary alternatives, which are called Ur-alternatives because of their logically fundamental character. Through Ur-alternatives as elementary quantum theoretical units of information the Copernican revolution with respect to the question of space is realized in a consequent way. This means that not the objects of nature are in a given space, but the existence of space arises as a kind of indirect representation of relations between abstract quantum theoretical objects. The Ur-alternatives do not exist in a given physical reality, but the existence of space is constituted by Ur-alternatives at all. Such a concept of reality is implicitly contained within the uncertainty relation and can be seen especially in the EPR-paradoxon. It is shown in this thesis in a mathematical consistent way that a state in the tensor space of many Ur-
The book gives an overview over the possible perspectives with regard to our conceptions of space and time in the transition from General Relativity to a future theory of Quantum Gravity. Here the most different approaches and strategies for a theory construction in the field of Quantum Gravity are taken into account.
This paper examines how the figure of the hacker is portrayed in German mainstream media and explores the impact of media framing on public discourse. Through a longitudinal content analysis of 301 articles from four of the most widely circulated German newspapers (Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Bild, and Der Spiegel), the study covers reporting between January 2017 and January 2020. The results reveal a strong predominance of negative connotations and dramatizing frames that link hackers to criminality, national security threats, and digital warfare. Drawing on media effects theory, scandalization mechanisms, and constructivist media theory, the article shows how media representations co-construct public perceptions of IT-related risks. The analysis emphasizes the role of agenda setting, framing, and media reality in shaping societal narratives around hackers. The study concludes by reflecting on the broader implications for IT security education and the sociopolitical challenges posed by distorted representations of digital actors.
This article offers a motivating travel guide towards the Jordan normal form, one of the highlights in courses on linear algebra or advanced mathematics. Its itinerary is characterized by a focus on core geometric aspects and the avoidance of algebraic tools. In this way, it attempts to encourage academic lecturers from more applied mathematical contexts to devote more time to one of the most exciting structures of linear algebra in their courses, rather than rushing through it, often using just a definition.
The energy transition is also about switching to electricity-based technologies such as heat pumps and electric mobility. They avoid heat as an intermediate step and are therefore much more efficient. This can significantly reduce the demand for primary energy in the future, which can then be fully covered by the expansion of renewable energies. Entropy and the maximum possible combustion temperature can be used to understand why combustion is so inefficient.
Two abelian varieties $A$ and $B$ over a number field $K$ are said to be strongly locally quadratic twists if they are quadratic twists at every completion of $K$. While it was known that this does not imply that $A$ and $B$ are quadratic twists over $K$, the only known counterexamples (necessarily of dimension $\geq 4$) are not geometrically simple. We show that, for every prime $p\equiv 13 \pmod{24}$, there exists a pair of geometrically simple abelian varieties of dimension $p-1$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ that are strongly locally quadratic twists but not quadratic twists. The proof is based on Galois cohomology computations and class field theory.
The warmer temperatures of global climate change strengthen the water cycle, evaporation and precipitation increase. But the extremes of heavy rain, floods, dry periods and droughts will also increase. How does this fit together? Simple physical considerations show which factors mainly regulate the strength of the water cycle in the Earth system, and how this determines water availability on land. This can be used to interpret the observed changes in the water balance in Germany and explain the increasing dryness in Germany.
In the course of the energy transition, energy generation from nuclear power - through nuclear fission and perhaps in the future through nuclear fusion - is often proposed as an alternative or supplement to renewable energy sources. There are already good reasons why electricity generation from nuclear energy is significantly more expensive than other forms of generation, while increasing dryness as a result of climate change is generally calling into question the reliability of thermal power plants. Nuclear energy is therefore unlikely to play a role in a future energy supply that relies on low costs and reliability.
Quantum physics is a long established content in high school curricula. More recently, alternative approaches based on information-theoretical formulations of quantum theory have been discussed, in which conceptual emphases change in comparison to established didactical approaches. In particular, the notions of "superposition" and "entanglement" are brought into the center of discussion in these approaches. Likewise, there is a broad public interest in the new applications of quantum physics such as quantum computing, which has led to a variety of popular depictions. In this paper we identify common inaccuracies and errors in these representations, explain the technical background and make first recommendations to avoid misunderstandings. Our initial focus is on the notion of "superposition".
In this work, we provide a complete characterization of the boundedness of two classes of multiparameter Forelli-Rudin type operators from one mixed-norm Lebesgue space $L^{\vec p}$ to another space $L^{\vec q}$, when $1\leq \vec{p}\leq \vec q<\infty$, equipped with possibly different weights. Using these characterizations, we establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for both $L^{\vec p}-L^{\vec q}$ boundedness of the weighted multiparameter Berezin transform and $L^{\vec p}-A^{\vec q}$ boundedness of the weighted multiparameter Bergman projection, where $A^{\vec q}$ denotes the mixed-norm Bergman space. Our approach presents several novelties. Firstly, we conduct refined integral estimates of holomorphic functions on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Secondly, we adapt the classical Schur's test to different weighted mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces. These improvements are crucial in our proofs and allow us to establish the desired characterization and sharp conditions.
This is an English translation of Ostrowski's article "Über Dirichletsche Reihen und algebraische Differentialgleichungen" published German in Math. Zeit. vol. 8, 1920, pp. 241-298. In this article, Ostrowski proves a conjecture of Hilbert that the two variable function $ζ(x,s)=\sum_{n\ge 1} \frac{x^n}{n^s}$ cannot be written as a composition of analytic functions of one variable and algebraic functions of any number of variables.
The Exodus was causally connected to the eruption of Thera. The time of this geological event is determined by C14 dating as 1627-1600 BC. The chaos that followed this catastrophe led to upheavals which distorted the chronologies. Taking periods of foreign domination into account leads to an agreement between the chronologies of Egypt and Israel.
We construct a geometric model for the root category $\mathcal{D}^b(Q)/[2]$ of any Dynkin diagram $Q$, which is an $h_Q$-gon $\mathbf{V}_Q$ with cores, where $h_Q$ is the Coxeter number and $\mathcal{D}^b(Q)$ is the bounded derived category associated to $Q$. As an application, we classify all spaces $\mathrm{ToSt}\mathcal{D}$ of total stability conditions on triangulated categories $\mathcal{D}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ must be of the form $\mathcal{D}^b(Q)$. More precisely, we prove that $\mathrm{ToSt}\mathcal{D}^b(Q)/[2]$ is isomorphic to a suitable moduli space of stable $h_Q$-gons of type $Q$. In particular, an $h_Q$-gon $\mathbf{V}$ of type $D_n$ is a (centrally) symmetric doubly punctured $2(n-1)$-gon. $\mathbf{V}$ is stable if it is convex and the punctures are inside the level-$(n-2)$ diagonal-gon. Another interesting case is $E_6$, where the (stable) $h_Q$-gon (dodecagon) can be realized as a pair of planar tiling pattern.
For any given symmetrizable Cartan matrix $C$ with a symmetrizer $D$, Geiß~ et al. (2016) introduced a generalized preprojective algebra $Π(C, D)$. We study tilting modules and support $τ$-tilting modules for the generalized preprojective algebra $Π(C, D)$ and show that there is a bijection between the set of all cofinite tilting ideals of $Π(C,D)$ and the corresponding Weyl group $W(C)$ provided that $C$ has no component of Dynkin type. When $C$ is of Dynkin type, we also establish a bijection between the set of all basic support $τ$-tilting $Π(C,D)$-modules and the corresponding Weyl group $W(C)$. These results generalize the classification results of Buan et al. (Compos. Math. 145(4), 1035-1079, 2009) and Mizuno (Math. Zeit. 277(3), 665-690, 2014) over classical preprojective algebras.
Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type with p_g=0 such that the bicanonical map of S is not birational and let Z be the bicanonical image. In [M.Mendes Lopes, R.Pardini, "Enriques surfaces with eight nodes", Math. Zeit. 241 (4) (2002), 673-683] it is shown that either: i) Z is a rational surface, or ii) K^2_S=3, the bicanonical map is a degree two morphism and Z is birational to an Enriques surface. Up to now no example of case ii) was known. Here an explicit construction of all such surfaces is given. Furthermore it is shown that the corresponding subset of the moduli space of surfaces of general type is irreducible and uniruled of dimension 6.
During the ``long decade'' of transformation of mathematical physics between 1915 and 1930, H. Weyl interacted with physics in two highly productive phases and contributed to it, among others, by his widely read book on {\em Space - Time - Matter (Raum Zeit - Materie)} (1918 -- 1923) and on {\em Group Theory and Quantum Mechanics (Gruppentheorie und Quantenmechanik)} (1928 - 1931). In this time Weyl's understanding of the constitution of matter and its mathematical description changed considerably. At the beginning of the period he started from a "dynamistic" and geometrical conception of matter, following and extending the Mie-Hilbert approch, which he gave up during the year 1920. After transitional experiments with a singularity (and in this sense topological) approach in 1921/22, he developed an open perspective of what he called an ``agency theory'' of matter. The idea for it was formulated already before the advent of the ``new'' quantum mechanics in 1925/26. It turned out to be well suited to be taken over to the quantum view as a kind of ``heritage'' from the first half of the decade. At the end of the period, Weyl completely renounced his earlier belief in the possibility
Information of many kinds is flowing in software projects and organizations. Requirements have to flow from the customer to the developers. Testers need to know the requirements as well. Boundary conditions and design decisions have to be at the right place at the right time. Information flow analysis with FLOW facilitates modeling of mode and route of the flow of information and experience independent of the development methodology. Experience often acts as a control factor, because experienced developers can process and route information more efficiently. Therefore, experience needs to be at the right place at the right time, too. However, most valuable experiences never get documented. Since information and experience is flowing in agile as well as in traditional environments, the FLOW method does not distinguish between agile and traditional, but only between how the flows are shaped. ---- In Softwareprojekten fließen vielerlei Informationen. The affine Kauffmann category is a strict monoidal category and can be considered as a $q$-analogue of the affine Brauer category in (Rui et al. in Math. Zeit. 293, 503-550, 2019). In this paper, we prove a basis theorem for the morphism spaces in the affine Kauffmann category. The cyclotomic Kauffmann category is a quotient category of the affine Kauffmann category. We also prove that any morphism space in this category is free over an integral domain $\mathbb K$ with maximal rank if and only if the $\mathbf u$-admissible condition holds in the sense of Definition 1.13.
