[Extract from the Preface] The 12th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS 2012), held in Cairns, Queensland, Australia from July 9-13th, 2012, was attended by nearly 2000 delegates. The program included over 1500 talks and posters. We are pleased to present the Proceedings, which contains almost 200 contributions from scientists around the world arising from the Symposium. The Proceedings encompass a broad spectrum of coral reef science, and demonstrates a growing expansion from the biological and earth sciences to non-traditional disciplines, including the social sciences and economics. The trend in earlier ICRS Symposia, towards a larger contribution from the fields of conservation planning and management, continued in Cairns in 2012. The Symposium also included an increased focus on climate change and ocean acidification, as well as reef management and governance issues including the Coral Triangle Initiative. For the first time in the history of ICRS Symposia, the organizers of the meeting invited submission of manuscripts for peer review prior to the Symposium so that delegates could receive the Proceedings when they arrive at the Symposium. We hope the benefits of rapid publication will allow prompt dissemination of the latest breakthroughs in coral reef science, and stimulate further advances in the knowledge necessary for sustaining the world's coral reefs. An additional advantage of rapid publication is the benefit of immediately placing the Proceedings online on the ICRS 2012 website (http://www.icrs2012.com/), where it is freely accessible to a global audience. The Symposium website will also archive many other outcomes of ICRS 2012, including video recordings of the Plenary Talks. We thank the WorldFish Center in Penang, Malaysia, for agreeing to upload the ICRS 2012 Proceedings to ReefBase (http://www.reefbase.org) along with earlier ICRS Symposia.
Understanding of monetary transmission mechanisms is crucial to answering a broad range of questions. These transmission mechanisms include interest-rate effects, exchange-rate effects, other asset price effects, and the so-called credit channel. This introduction to the symposium provides an overview of the main types of monetary transmission mechanisms found in the literature and a perspective on how the papers in the symposium relate to the overall literature and to each other.
Abstract Phosphorus in runoff from agricultural land is an important component of nonpoint‐source pollution and can accelerate eutrophication of lakes and streams. Long‐term land application of P as fertilizer and animal wastes has resulted in elevated levels of soil P in many locations in the USA. Problems with soils high in P are often aggravated by the proximity of many of these areas to P‐sensitive water bodies, such as the Great Lakes, Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, Lake Okeechobee, and the Everglades. This paper provides a brief overview of the issues and options related to management of agricultural P that were discussed at a special symposium titled, “Agricultural Phosphorus and Eutrophication,” held at the November 1996 American Society of Agronomy annual meetings. Topics discussed at the symposium and reviewed here included the role of P in eutrophication; identification of P‐sensitive water bodies; P transport mechanisms; chemical forms and fate of P; identification of P source areas; modeling of P transport; water quality criteria; and management of soil and manure P, off‐farm P inputs, and P transport processes.

The papers in this symposium represent the divergent views of economists on an important issue: the extent to which prices of assets represent “fundamental” values. While the papers in the symposium present different formal definitions of what a bubble is, the basic intuition is straightforward: if the reason that the price is high today is only because investors believe that the selling price will be high tomorrow—when “fundamental” factors do not seem to justify such a price—then a bubble exists.
This international symposium featured three interconnected thematic foci of interdisciplinary research. They focussed on the changes in the extent and intensity of agricultural and forest land use in tropical forest margins and their implications for rural development and for conservation of natural resources such as biodiversity, soils and water. The symposium took place in Goettingen. Almost 130 international authors have contributed a short abstract and their adress.
We undertook this study to develop uniformly accepted criteria for the definition of organ involvement and response for patients on treatment protocols for immunoglobulin light-chain amyloidosis (AL). A consensus panel was convened comprising 13 specialists actively involved in the treatment of patients with amyloidosis. Institutional criteria were submitted from each, and a consensus was developed defining each organ involved and the criteria for response. Specific criteria have been developed with agreed on definitions of organ and hematologic response as a result of discussions at the 10th International Symposium on Amyloid and Amyloidosis held in Tours, France, April 2004. These criteria now form the working definition of involvement and response for the purposes of future data collection and reporting. We report criteria that centers can now use to define organ involvement and uniform response criteria for reporting outcomes in patients with light-chain AL.
Limestones and dolomites form the economically important and exceedingly complex family of carbonate rocks. They are set distinctly apart from related rock families by their intrabasinal and highly local origin, their genetic dependence upon organic activity, and their extreme susceptibility to post- depositional modification.The successful classification of carbonate rocks requires detailed knowledge of their multiple com-ponents and genetic processes. Such knowledge has been greatly increased during a period of accelerated investigations since 1940, with the result that the modern classifications are marked improvements over their predecessors.Most of the newer classifications utilize a practical blending of descriptive and genetic parameters. The parameters most commonly used are depositional fabric, particularly the relative abundance of coarser carbonate particles (grains) as compared with the finer grained particles (matrix or micrite); the size and genetic types of the grains or of in-place biotic constituents; the mineralogy; and the nature and degree of post-depositional modification. Secondary parameters include porosity, cementation, the degree of abrasion or rounding of the grains, admixtures of noncarbonate material, and a host of others.The symposium classifications of carbonate rocks and two allied articles of this volume are briefly reviewed and compared. Despite the differences in approach, purpose, and experience among the various authors, the resulting classifications show strong similarities and therefore indicate that a basis of mutual

OW THE BR\I> functions has alwas been a great puzzle to both laymen and experts. It is interesting, therefore, to see what a group of 19 outstanding scientists had to say on this subject when they met at the California Institute of Technology in the fall of 1948. These men. who came from several different disciplines (mathematics. chemistry, physiology, neurology. psychology and psychiatry1 shared their research findings and theoretical formulations d u r i n g t h e week of this symposium. This book contains six of the seven papers which were presented there, and records of the discussions, which have been ably edited by Lloyd Jeffress, who v a s Hixon Visiting Professor here in 1947-48.
