This paper presents an MFG-based decision-making framework for autonomous driving in heterogeneous traffic. To capture diverse human behaviors, we propose a quantitative driving style representation that maps abstract traits to parameters such as speed, safety factors, and reaction time. These parameters are embedded into the MFG through a spatial influence field model. To ensure safe operation in dense traffic, we introduce a safety-critical lane-changing algorithm that leverages dynamic safety margins, time-to-collision analysis, and multi-layered constraints. Real-world NGSIM data is employed for style calibration and empirical validation. Experimental results demonstrate zero collisions across six style combinations, two 15-vehicle scenarios, and NGSIM-based trials, consistently outperforming conventional game-theoretic baselines. Overall, our approach provides a scalable, interpretable, and behavior-aware planning framework for real-world autonomous driving applications.
Generative AI is revolutionizing engineering design practices by enabling rapid prototyping and manipulation of designs. One example of design manipulation involves taking two reference design images and using them as prompts to generate a design image that combines aspects of both. Real engineering designs have physical constraints and functional requirements in addition to aesthetic design considerations. Internet-scale foundation models commonly used for image generation, however, are unable to take these physical constraints and functional requirements into consideration as part of the generation process. We consider the problem of generating a design inspired by two input designs, and propose a zero-shot framework toward enforcing physical, functional requirements over the generation process by leveraging a pretrained diffusion model as the backbone. As a case study, we consider the example of rotational symmetry in generation of wheel designs. Automotive wheels are required to be rotationally symmetric for physical stability. We formulate the requirement of rotational symmetry by the use of a symmetrizer, and we use this symmetrizer to guide the diffusion process towards symm
Most of the existing works on image description focus on generating expressive descriptions. The only few works that are dedicated to generating stylish (e.g., romantic, lyric, etc.) descriptions suffer from limited style variation and content digression. To address these limitations, we propose a controllable stylish image description generation model. It can learn to generate stylish image descriptions that are more related to image content and can be trained with the arbitrary monolingual corpus without collecting new paired image and stylish descriptions. Moreover, it enables users to generate various stylish descriptions by plugging in style-specific parameters to include new styles into the existing model. We achieve this capability via a novel layer normalization layer design, which we will refer to as the Domain Layer Norm (DLN). Extensive experimental validation and user study on various stylish image description generation tasks are conducted to show the competitive advantages of the proposed model.
Risk-limiting audits (RLAs) can use information about which ballot cards contain which contests (card-style data, CSD) to ensure that each contest receives adequate scrutiny, without examining more cards than necessary. RLAs using CSD in this way can be substantially more efficient than RLAs that sample indiscriminately from all cast cards. We describe an open-source Python implementation of RLAs using CSD for the Hart InterCivic Verity voting system and the Dominion Democracy Suite(R) voting system. The software is demonstrated using all 181 contests in the 2020 general election and all 214 contests in the 2022 general election in Orange County, CA, USA, the fifth-largest election jurisdiction in the U.S., with over 1.8 million active voters. (Orange County uses the Hart Verity system.) To audit the 181 contests in 2020 to a risk limit of 5% without using CSD would have required a complete hand tally of all 3,094,308 cast ballot cards. With CSD, the estimated sample size is about 20,100 cards, 0.65% of the cards cast--including one tied contest that required a complete hand count. To audit the 214 contests in 2022 to a risk limit of 5% without using CSD would have required a compl
In this paper, we propose to build a stylish image captioning model through a Multi-style Multi modality mechanism (2M). We demonstrate that with 2M, we can build an effective stylish captioner and that multi-references produced by the model can also support explaining the model through identifying erroneous input features on faulty examples. We show how this 2M mechanism can be used to build stylish captioning models and show how these models can be utilized to provide explanations of likely errors in the models.
Great novels create immersive worlds with rich character arcs, well-structured plots, and nuanced writing styles. However, current novel generation methods often rely on brief, simplistic story outlines and generate details using plain, generic language. To bridge this gap, we introduce the task of Pastiche Novel Generation, which requires the generated novels to imitate the distinctive features of the original work, including understanding character profiles, predicting plausible plot developments, and writing concrete details using vivid, expressive language. To achieve this, we propose WriterAgent, a novel generation system designed to master the core aspects of literary pastiche. WriterAgent is trained through a curriculum learning paradigm, progressing from low-level stylistic mastery to high-level narrative coherence. Its key tasks include language style learning, character modeling, plot planning, and stylish writing, ensuring comprehensive narrative control. To support this, WriterAgent leverages the WriterLoRA framework, an extension of LoRA with hierarchical and cumulative task-specific modules, each specializing in a different narrative aspect. We evaluate WriterAgent on
Aerodynamic optimization is crucial for developing eco-friendly, aerodynamic, and stylish cars, which requires close collaboration between aerodynamicists and stylists, a collaboration impaired by the time-consuming nature of aerodynamic simulations. Surrogate models offer a viable solution to reduce this overhead, but they are untested in real-world aerodynamic datasets. We present a comparative evaluation of two surrogate modeling approaches for predicting drag on a real-world dataset: a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model that uses a signed distance field as input and a commercial tool based on Graph Neural Networks (GNN) that directly processes a surface mesh. In contrast to previous studies based on datasets created from parameterized geometries, our dataset comprises 343 geometries derived from 32 baseline vehicle geometries across five distinct car projects, reflecting the diverse, free-form modifications encountered in the typical vehicle development process. Our results show that the CNN-based method achieves a mean absolute error of 2.3 drag counts, while the GNN-based method achieves 3.8. Both methods achieve approximately 77% accuracy in predicting the direction of
Personalized outfit recommendation remains a complex challenge, demanding both fashion compatibility understanding and trend awareness. This paper presents a novel framework that harnesses the expressive power of large language models (LLMs) for this task, mitigating their "black box" and static nature through fine-tuning and direct feedback integration. We bridge the item visual-textual gap in items descriptions by employing image captioning with a Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM). This enables the LLM to extract style and color characteristics from human-curated fashion images, forming the basis for personalized recommendations. The LLM is efficiently fine-tuned on the open-source Polyvore dataset of curated fashion images, optimizing its ability to recommend stylish outfits. A direct preference mechanism using negative examples is employed to enhance the LLM's decision-making process. This creates a self-enhancing AI feedback loop that continuously refines recommendations in line with seasonal fashion trends. Our framework is evaluated on the Polyvore dataset, demonstrating its effectiveness in two key tasks: fill-in-the-blank, and complementary item retrieval. These evalu
Large language models (LLMs) have increased the demand for personalized and stylish content generation. However, closed-source models like GPT-4 present limitations in optimization opportunities, while the substantial training costs and inflexibility of open-source alternatives, such as Qwen-72B, pose considerable challenges. Conversely, small language models (SLMs) struggle with understanding complex instructions and transferring learned capabilities to new contexts, often exhibiting more pronounced limitations. In this paper, we present a novel collaborative training framework that leverages the strengths of both LLMs and SLMs for style article generation, surpassing the performance of either model alone. We freeze the LLMs to harness their robust instruction-following capabilities and subsequently apply supervised fine-tuning on the SLM using style-specific data. Additionally, we introduce a self-improvement method to enhance style consistency. Our new benchmark, NoteBench, thoroughly evaluates style-aligned generation. Extensive experiments show that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance, with improvements of 0.78 in ROUGE-L and 0.55 in BLEU-4 scores compared to GP
Image generation in the fashion domain has predominantly focused on preserving body characteristics or following input prompts, but little attention has been paid to improving the inherent fashionability of the output images. This paper presents a novel diffusion model-based approach that generates fashion images with improved fashionability while maintaining control over key attributes. Key components of our method include: 1) fashionability enhancement, which ensures that the generated images are more fashionable than the input; 2) preservation of body characteristics, encouraging the generated images to maintain the original shape and proportions of the input; and 3) automatic fashion optimization, which does not rely on manual input or external prompts. We also employ two methods to collect training data for guidance while generating and evaluating the images. In particular, we rate outfit images using fashionability scores annotated by multiple fashion experts through OpenSkill-based and five critical aspect-based pairwise comparisons. These methods provide complementary perspectives for assessing and improving the fashionability of the generated images. The experimental resul
To build a fashion recommendation system, we need to help users retrieve fashionable items that are visually similar to a particular query, for reasons ranging from searching alternatives (i.e., substitutes), to generating stylish outfits that are visually consistent, among other applications. In domains like clothing and accessories, such considerations are particularly paramount as the visual appearance of items is a critical feature that guides users' decisions. However, existing systems like Amazon and eBay still rely mainly on keyword search and recommending loosely consistent items (e.g. based on co-purchasing or browsing data), without an interface that makes use of visual information to serve the above needs. In this paper, we attempt to fill this gap by designing and implementing an image-based query system, called Fashionista, which provides a graphical interface to help users efficiently explore those items that are not only visually similar to a given query, but which are also fashionable, as determined by visually-aware recommendation approaches. Methodologically, Fashionista learns a low-dimensional visual space as well as the evolution of fashion trends from large co
The ubiquity of online fashion shopping demands effective recommendation services for customers. In this paper, we study two types of fashion recommendation: (i) suggesting an item that matches existing components in a set to form a stylish outfit (a collection of fashion items), and (ii) generating an outfit with multimodal (images/text) specifications from a user. To this end, we propose to jointly learn a visual-semantic embedding and the compatibility relationships among fashion items in an end-to-end fashion. More specifically, we consider a fashion outfit to be a sequence (usually from top to bottom and then accessories) and each item in the outfit as a time step. Given the fashion items in an outfit, we train a bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM) model to sequentially predict the next item conditioned on previous ones to learn their compatibility relationships. Further, we learn a visual-semantic space by regressing image features to their semantic representations aiming to inject attribute and category information as a regularization for training the LSTM. The trained network can not only perform the aforementioned recommendations effectively but also predict the compatibility of
The generation of stylish Chinese fonts is an important problem involved in many applications. Most of existing generation methods are based on the deep generative models, particularly, the generative adversarial networks (GAN) based models. However, these deep generative models may suffer from the mode collapse issue, which significantly degrades the diversity and quality of generated results. In this paper, we introduce a one-bit stroke encoding to capture the key mode information of Chinese characters and then incorporate it into CycleGAN, a popular deep generative model for Chinese font generation. As a result we propose an efficient method called StrokeGAN, mainly motivated by the observation that the stroke encoding contains amount of mode information of Chinese characters. In order to reconstruct the one-bit stroke encoding of the associated generated characters, we introduce a stroke-encoding reconstruction loss imposed on the discriminator. Equipped with such one-bit stroke encoding and stroke-encoding reconstruction loss, the mode collapse issue of CycleGAN can be significantly alleviated, with an improved preservation of strokes and diversity of generated characters. The
Fashion as characterized by its nature, is driven by style. In this paper, we propose a method that takes into account the style information to complete a given set of selected fashion items with a complementary fashion item. Complementary items are those items that can be worn along with the selected items according to the style. Addressing this problem facilitates in automatically generating stylish fashion ensembles leading to a richer shopping experience for users. Recently, there has been a surge of online social websites where fashion enthusiasts post the outfit of the day and other users can like and comment on them. These posts contain a gold-mine of information about style. In this paper, we exploit these posts to train a deep neural network which captures style in an automated manner. We pose the problem of predicting complementary fashion items as a sequence to sequence problem where the input is the selected set of fashion items and the output is a complementary fashion item based on the style information learned by the model. We use the encoder decoder architecture to solve this problem of completing the set of fashion items. We evaluate the goodness of the proposed mo
Majority of state-of-the-art monocular depth estimation methods are supervised learning approaches. The success of such approaches heavily depends on the high-quality depth labels which are expensive to obtain. Some recent methods try to learn depth networks by leveraging unsupervised cues from monocular videos which are easier to acquire but less reliable. In this paper, we propose to resolve this dilemma by transferring knowledge from synthetic videos with easily obtainable ground-truth depth labels. Due to the stylish difference between synthetic and real images, we propose a temporally-consistent domain adaptation (TCDA) approach that simultaneously explores labels in the synthetic domain and temporal constraints in the videos to improve style transfer and depth prediction. Furthermore, we make use of the ground-truth optical flow and pose information in the synthetic data to learn moving mask and pose prediction networks. The learned moving masks can filter out moving regions that produces erroneous temporal constraints and the estimated poses provide better initializations for estimating temporal constraints. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method an
In this paper, we build a multi-style generative model for stylish image captioning which uses multi-modality image features, ResNeXt features and text features generated by DenseCap. We propose the 3M model, a Multi-UPDOWN caption model that encodes multi-modality features and decode them to captions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our model on generating human-like captions by examining its performance on two datasets, the PERSONALITY-CAPTIONS dataset and the FlickrStyle10K dataset. We compare against a variety of state-of-the-art baselines on various automatic NLP metrics such as BLEU, ROUGE-L, CIDEr, SPICE, etc. A qualitative study has also been done to verify our 3M model can be used for generating different stylized captions.
Fashion is an inherently visual concept and computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) are playing an increasingly important role in shaping the future of this domain. Many research has been done on recommending fashion products based on the learned user preferences. However, in addition to recommending single items, AI can also help users create stylish outfits from items they already have, or purchase additional items that go well with their current wardrobe. Compatibility is the key factor in creating stylish outfits from single items. Previous studies have mostly focused on modeling pair-wise compatibility. There are a few approaches that consider an entire outfit, but these approaches have limitations such as requiring rich semantic information, category labels, and fixed order of items. Thus, they fail to effectively determine compatibility when such information is not available. In this work, we adopt a Relation Network (RN) to develop new compatibility learning models, Fashion RN and FashionRN-VSE, that addresses the limitations of existing approaches. FashionRN learns the compatibility of an entire outfit, with an arbitrary number of items, in an arbitrary order. We
Neural Style Transfer based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) aims to synthesize a new image that retains the high-level structure of a content image, rendered in the low-level texture of a style image. This is achieved by constraining the new image to have high-level CNN features similar to the content image, and lower-level CNN features similar to the style image. However in the traditional optimization objective, low-level features of the content image are absent, and the low-level features of the style image dominate the low-level detail structures of the new image. Hence in the synthesized image, many details of the content image are lost, and a lot of inconsistent and unpleasing artifacts appear. As a remedy, we propose to steer image synthesis with a novel loss function: the Laplacian loss. The Laplacian matrix ("Laplacian" in short), produced by a Laplacian operator, is widely used in computer vision to detect edges and contours. The Laplacian loss measures the difference of the Laplacians, and correspondingly the difference of the detail structures, between the content image and a new image. It is flexible and compatible with the traditional style transfer constraints
Stylized image captioning systems aim to generate a caption not only semantically related to a given image but also consistent with a given style description. One of the biggest challenges with this task is the lack of sufficient paired stylized data. Many studies focus on unsupervised approaches, without considering from the perspective of data augmentation. We begin with the observation that people may recall similar emotions when they are in similar scenes, and often express similar emotions with similar style phrases, which underpins our data augmentation idea. In this paper, we propose a novel Extract-Retrieve-Generate data augmentation framework to extract style phrases from small-scale stylized sentences and graft them to large-scale factual captions. First, we design the emotional signal extractor to extract style phrases from small-scale stylized sentences. Second, we construct the plugable multi-modal scene retriever to retrieve scenes represented with pairs of an image and its stylized caption, which are similar to the query image or caption in the large-scale factual data. In the end, based on the style phrases of similar scenes and the factual description of the curren
In this work we focus on entanglement of two--mode Gaussian states of continuous variable systems. We first review the formalism of Gaussian measures of entanglement, adopting the framework developed in [M. M. Wolf {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 69}, 052320 (2004)], where the Gaussian entanglement of formation was defined. We compute Gaussian measures explicitely for two important families of nonsymmetric two--mode Gaussian states, namely the states of extremal (maximal and minimal) negativities at fixed global and local purities, introduced in [G. Adesso {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 087901 (2004)]. This allows us to compare the {\em orderings} induced on the set of entangled two--mode Gaussian states by the negativities and by the Gaussian entanglement measures. We find that in a certain range of global and local purities (characterizing the covariance matrix of the corresponding extremal states), states of minimum negativity can have more Gaussian entanglement than states of maximum negativity. Thus Gaussian measures and negativities are definitely inequivalent on nonsymmetric two--mode Gaussian states (even when restricted to extremal states), while they are complet
