Strabismus affects 2-4% of the population, yet individuals recovering from corrective surgery lack accessible tools for monitoring eye alignment. Dichoptic therapies require active engagement & clinical supervision, limiting their adoption for passive self-awareness. We present GazeFlow, a browser-based self-monitoring system that uses a personalized temporal autoencoder to detect eye drift patterns from webcam-based gaze tracking & provides ambient audio feedback. Unlike alert-based systems, GazeFlow operates according to calm computing principles, morphing musical parameters in proportion to drift severity while remaining in peripheral awareness. We address the challenges of inter-individual variability & domain transfer (1000Hz research to 30Hz webcam) by introducing Binocular Temporal-Frequency Disentanglement (BTFD), Contrastive Biometric Pre-training (CBP), & Gaze-MAML. We validate our approach on the GazeBase dataset (N=50) achieving F1=0.84 for drift detection, & conduct a preliminary user study (N=6) with participants having intermittent strabismus. Participants reported increased awareness of their eye behaviour (M=5.8/7) & preference for ambient f
Strabismus is a common ocular disorder that requires fine-grained subtype diagnosis for individualized treatment planning. However, existing deep learning methods mainly provide diagnostic predictions without transparent reasoning, while recent large vision-language models (LVLMs), although promising for joint image understanding and report generation, remain highly prone to hallucination in this evidence-sensitive and rule-driven medical task. To address these challenges, we propose DECIS, a Dual-Evidence Corrective verification for Interpretable Strabismus diagnostic decision-making framework. DECIS transforms black-box end-to-end generation into a structured diagnostic process consisting of candidate hypothesis generation, dual-evidence constrained context, evidence-based corrective verification, and report generation. Specifically, we introduce a Dual-Evidence Constrained Context (DECC) mechanism that jointly organizes visual evidence from the photograph of the nine cardinal positions of gaze and evidence-based clinical diagnostic rules into a constrained context for reliable diagnostic reasoning. We further develop an Evidence-Based Corrective Verification (EBCV) mechanism tha
Purpose: Up to 4% of adults will develop strabismus in their lifetime. The most common surgical intervention involves adjusting the length of one or more extraocular muscles to correct the angular deviation. This correction depends on surgical expertise and statistical reference tables, which often fail to yield optimal results for patients with atypical eye morphology. Our work proposes a physics-based modeling approach to personalized surgical planning, accounting for patient-specific eye anatomy. Methods: We built a physics-based simulator of the eye and its muscles, incorporating patient-specific geometry and Hill-type muscle biomechanics. We solve an optimization problem to find the surgical dosage that minimizes angular deviation. The model is implemented as a fully differentiable simulation, enabling efficient optimization. We validated the framework by comparing its predictions with standard surgical tables for emmetropic eyes before applying it to anatomically atypical virtual patients. Results: Our model's predictions for emmetropic eyes were first validated, demonstrating a strong fit with standard surgical tables. More importantly, for high-myopia models, the framework
Strabismus is one of the most influential ophthalmologic diseases in human's life. Timely detection of strabismus contributes to its prognosis and treatment. Telemedicine, which has great potential to alleviate the growing demand of the diagnosis of ophthalmologic diseases, is an effective method to achieve timely strabismus detection. In this paper, a tele strabismus dataset is established by the ophthalmologists. Then an end-to-end framework named as RF-CNN is proposed to achieve automated strabismus detection on the established tele strabismus dataset. RF-CNN first performs eye region segmentation on each individual image, and further classifies the segmented eye regions with deep neural networks. The experimental results on the established tele strabismus dataset demonstrates that the proposed RF-CNN can have a good performance on automated strabismus detection for telemedicine application. Strabismus can be found in association with congenital heart diseases, for examples, in velocardiofacial (DiGeorge) syndrome, Down syndrome, mild dysmorphic features, in CHARGE association, Turner syndrome, Ullrich-Turner syndrome, cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome.1-4 Some types of strabismus is heritable (e.g. infantile esotropia syndrome), particularly the ones associated with multisystem disorders, e.g. Moebius syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, craniofacial dysostoses, and mitochondrial myopathies.5 Due to the complexities that a case of strabismus may pertain to, it is worthwhile to get to know more about the strabismic syndromes and syndromic strabismus. This brief review -as its name implied- does not attempt to cover every angle of the syndromic conditions, but offers a refreshment on our knowledge about more prevalent strabismus-related syndromes.
Ocular-induced abnormal head posture (AHP) is a compensatory mechanism that arises from ocular misalignment conditions, such as strabismus, enabling patients to reduce diplopia and preserve binocular vision. Early diagnosis minimizes morbidity and secondary complications such as facial asymmetry; however, current clinical assessments remain largely subjective and are further complicated by incomplete medical records. This study addresses both challenges through two complementary deep learning frameworks. First, AHP-CADNet is a multi-level attention fusion framework for automated diagnosis that integrates ocular landmarks, head pose features, and structured clinical attributes to generate interpretable predictions. Second, a curriculum learning-based imputation framework is designed to mitigate missing data by progressively leveraging structured variables and unstructured clinical notes to enhance diagnostic robustness under realistic data conditions. Evaluation on the PoseGaze-AHP dataset demonstrates robust diagnostic performance. AHP-CADNet achieves 96.9-99.0 percent accuracy across classification tasks and low prediction errors for continuous variables, with MAE ranging from 0.1
Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is an involuntary eye movement responsible for stabilizing retinal images in the presence of relative motion between an observer and the environment. Fully understanding the development of optokinetic nystagmus requires a neurally plausible computational model that accounts for the neural development and the behavior. To date, work in this area has been limited. We propose a neurally plausible framework for the joint development of disparity and motion tuning in the visual cortex, the optokinetic and vergence eye movements. This framework models the joint emergence of both perception and behavior, and accounts for the importance of the development of normal vergence control and binocular vision in achieving normal monocular OKN (mOKN) behaviors. Because the model includes behavior, we can simulate the same perturbations as performed in past experiments, such as artificially induced strabismus. The proposed model agrees both qualitatively and quantitatively with a number of findings from the literature on both binocular vision as well as the optokinetic reflex. Finally, our model also makes quantitative predictions about the OKN behavior using the same me
