This work describes the rescue and enhancement of several thousand spectrophotometric plates from the La Plata Observatory. These plates and their attached handwritten documents, date from the beginning of the 20th century and contain information on observations made at different observatories around the world. Due to their fragility and the inevitable deterioration produced by the passage of time, they are being cleaned up, recovered and digitized. The information contained in the plates has a high scientific value and, based on a comparison of an old spectrum with a current one, part of the history of the star can be reconstructed. Through the ReTrOH project, we seek to translate the document into an appropriate format, preserve and disseminate that knowledge, and also recover the scientific project and the historical and personal context of the observers. The digitized spectra are available in the virtual repository (SEDICI) of the UNLP.
The HIV/AIDS pandemic is a global issue that has unequally affected several countries. Due to the complexity of this condition and the human drama it represents to those most affected by it, several fields have contributed to solving or at least alleviating this situation, and the information systems (IS) field has not been absent from these efforts. With the importance of antiretroviral therapy (ART) as a starting point, several initiatives in the IS field have focused on ways to improve the adherence and effectiveness of this therapy: mobile phone reminders (for pill intake and appointments), and mobile interfaces between patients and health workers are popular contributions. However, many of these solutions have been difficult to implement or deploy in some countries in the Global South, which are among the most affected by this pandemic. This paper presents one such case. Using a case-study approach with an extreme-case selection technique, the paper studies an m-health system for HIV patients in the Kalangala region of Uganda. Using Heeks' design-reality gap model for data analysis, the paper shows that the rich interaction between social context and technology should be consi
We conducted regression discontinuity design models in order to evaluate changes in access to healthcare services and financial protection, using as a natural experiment the age required to retire in Argentina, the moment in which people are able to enroll in the free social health insurance called PAMI. The dependent variables were indicators of the population with health insurance, out-of-pocket health expenditure, and use of health services. The results show that PAMI causes a high increase in the population with health insurance and marginal reductions in health expenditure. No effects on healthcare use were found.
This paper describes the participation of the SINAI team in the eRisk@CLEF lab. Specifically, two of the proposed tasks have been addressed: i) Task 1 on the early detection of signs of pathological gambling, and ii) Task 3 on measuring the severity of the signs of eating disorders. The approach presented in Task 1 is based on the use of sentence embeddings from Transformers with features related to volumetry, lexical diversity, complexity metrics, and emotion-related scores, while the approach for Task 3 is based on text similarity estimation using contextualized word embeddings from Transformers. In Task 1, our team has been ranked in second position, with an F1 score of 0.808, out of 41 participant submissions. In Task 3, our team also placed second out of a total of 3 participating teams.
This paper analyzes the scientific production on the COVID-19 effect in the area of Information Sciences from a bibliometric perspective. The objectives focused on: 1) determining the most productive authors, countries, institutions and journals; 2) identifying the sources that constitute the core of scientific production; 3) examining the manuscripts with the greatest impact; and 4) visualizing the thematic and conceptual structure of the scientific domain analyzed. Bibliometric indicators and factor analysis techniques were used for data analysis. A total of 1,175 publications indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) core collection from 2020 to 2022 were retrieved. The results showed that the most relevant countries were the United States, United Kingdom, China and Spain. The core of the scientific production was formed by the publications: Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Information Professional, Scientometrics and Journal of Health Communication. The papers with the greatest impact were concentrated in those dedicated to the analysis of the role of telemedicine in medical care. The conceptual structure showed the main research fronts, such as the role of te
Hope is a complex and underexplored emotional state that plays a significant role in education, mental health, and social interaction. Unlike basic emotions, hope manifests in nuanced forms ranging from grounded optimism to exaggerated wishfulness or sarcasm, making it difficult for Natural Language Processing systems to detect accurately. This study introduces PolyHope V2, a multilingual, fine-grained hope speech dataset comprising over 30,000 annotated tweets in English and Spanish. This resource distinguishes between four hope subtypes Generalized, Realistic, Unrealistic, and Sarcastic and enhances existing datasets by explicitly labeling sarcastic instances. We benchmark multiple pretrained transformer models and compare them with large language models (LLMs) such as GPT 4 and Llama 3 under zero-shot and few-shot regimes. Our findings show that fine-tuned transformers outperform prompt-based LLMs, especially in distinguishing nuanced hope categories and sarcasm. Through qualitative analysis and confusion matrices, we highlight systematic challenges in separating closely related hope subtypes. The dataset and results provide a robust foundation for future emotion recognition tas
In this work, we present an experimental study of the primary and secondary relaxations of the semi-crystalline polymer polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), by Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry (MDSC), Thermally Stimulated Depolarization Currents (TSDC) and Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS), and how they are affected by physical aging. Three dipolar relaxation modes can be observed: (from slowest to fastest) the primary $α$ relaxation, which vitrifies at the glass transition temperature, $T_{gα}$, and two secondary relaxations, named $β^*$ and $β$. MDSC results show how the secondary $β^*$ relaxation also vitrifies, giving rise to an additional glass transition at $T_{gβ^*} < T_{gα}$. In fact, the $α$ and $β^*$ relaxations can be considered as part of a very broad and distributed relaxation. Its main part is the primary $α$ relaxation with a shoulder at the high-frequency region corresponding to a complex secondary $β^*$ relaxation. BDS results about the $β^*$ can be modeled by a main contribution ($β_3^*$) and two additional ones ($β_1^*$ and $β_2^*$) with a weaker dielectric strength. TSDC results show that each single mode of the relaxation has its own glass transi
In 2001 E. Ghys, X. Gomez-Mont and J. Saludes defined the Fatou and Julia components of transversely holomorphic foliations on compact manifolds. It is a partition of the manifold in two saturated sets: the Fatou set which represents the non-chaotic part of the foliation and its complementary, the Julia set. Using the Brownian motion transverse to the foliation, it is proved in this paper that, if the foliation is taut and if F is a wandering component of the Fatou set, then almost every point of the topological boundary of F (almost for any harmonic measure on the boundary) is a limit point of each leaf of F.
We introduce CoWeSe (the Corpus Web Salud Español), the largest Spanish biomedical corpus to date, consisting of 4.5GB (about 750M tokens) of clean plain text. CoWeSe is the result of a massive crawler on 3000 Spanish domains executed in 2020. The corpus is openly available and already preprocessed. CoWeSe is an important resource for biomedical and health NLP in Spanish and has already been employed to train domain-specific language models and to produce word embbedings. We released the CoWeSe corpus under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, both in Zenodo (\url{https://zenodo.org/record/4561971\#.YTI5SnVKiEA}).
Human mobility is an important factor in the propagation of infectious diseases. In particular, the spatial spread of a disease is a consequence of human mobility. On the other hand, the control strategies based on mobility restrictions are generally unpopular and costly. These high social and economic costs make it very important to design global protocols where the cost is minimized and effects maximized. In this work, we calculate the percolation threshold of the spread in a network of a disease. In particular, we found the number of roads to close and regions to isolate in the Puebla State, Mexico, to avoid the global spread of COVID-19. Computational simulations taking into account the proposed strategy show a potential reduction of 94% of infections. This methodology can be used in broader and different areas to help in the design of health policies.
Objective: Determining the structure of mortality from causes and sociodemographic characteristics, in the municipality of San Francisco, Antioquia, 2001-2010. Methodology: Quantitative descriptive study with retrospective longitudinal data obtained from secondary source of death events through databases in electronic media supplied by the DANE. A description of the sociodemographic variables was performed by groups of cause of death, the life table by sex and years of potential life lost (APVP) for each year group and cause of death was calculated. Results: External causes and assaults, homicides, as the main cause of death occurs during the decade of study, and especially in men, which had higher mortality rates, more likely to die and less life expectancy during the period. On average men and external causes showed a higher number of potential years of life lost for the years 2001-2010 life. Conclusions: Men have higher mortality rates over the decade, as external causes, assaults, murders, and a greater proportion of young men. The causes of death that bring more potential years of life lost are external causes. Life expectancy at birth and throughout the decade is greater for
Currently the COVID-19 epidemic is developing in the City of Culiacń Sinaloa, Mexico, where up to April 20 of this year there have been 35 deaths associated with this epidemic. The reproduction number $(R_0)$ of an epidemic represents the average number of people infected by an infected person during their period of infection. In this work we use the data published by the Secretary of Health of the State of Sinaloa on the number of new infected cases confirmed per day and we estimate that the value of $R_0$ is 1.562 with a 95% confidence interval given by (1.401,1.742). We also estimate the mortality rate among the confirmed cases, which turned out to be 16.8%. - - - - - Actualmente la epidemia COVID-19 se está desarrollando en la Ciudad de Culiacán Sinaloa, México, donde hasta el 20 de abril del presente año han ocurrido 35 decesos asociados con esta epidemia. We present an analysis of the wind circulation in the vecinity of the ground surface, for a region centered around Guatemala. We used the regional climate model RegCM to simulate the atmospheric dynamics above that region during the full year 2016. The purpose of the study is to obtain the mesoscale variation (tens of kilometers) of the wind velocity field. It can be seen that as resolution is increased, the details in topography are better represented, they in turn influence the wind circulation patterns on scales of a few kilometers. With a fine resolution of 2 km it is possible to confirm the existence of intense wind flux zones over the surface; such as Palín, Escuintla. We are also able to observe diurnally varying circulations, which are the product of the daily cycle of terrain heating due to the sun and the subsecuent cooling during the night. This is the first report in a line of studies where we plan to analyze the climatic features of the Guatemalan region.
In the present work, a detailed analysis of the glassy behavior and the relaxation dynamics of the liquid crystal dimer α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yloxy)-ω-(1-pyrenimine-benzylidene-4'-oxy) heptane (CBO7O.Py) throughout both nematic and smectic A mesophases by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy has been performed. CBO7O.Py shows three different dielectric relaxation modes and two glass transition (Tg) temperatures: the higher Tg is due to the freezing of the molecular motions responsible of the relaxation mode with the lowest frequency (μ1L); the lower Tg is due to the motions responsible of the two relaxation modes with highest frequencies (μ1H and μ2), which converge just at their corresponding Tg. It is shown how the three modes follow a critical-like description via the dynamic scaling model. The two modes with lowest frequencies (μ1L and μ1H) are cooperative in the whole range of the mesophases, whereas the highest frequency mode (μ2) is cooperative just below some cross-over temperature. In terms of fragility, at the glass transition, the ensemble (μ1H +μ2) presents a value of the steepness index and μ1L a different one, meaning that fragility is a property intrinsic of th
Cancer is a disease involving many genes, consequently it has been difficult to design anticancer drugs that are efficacious over a broad range of cancers. The robustness of cellular responses to gene knockout and the need to reduce undesirable side effects also contribute to the problem of effective anti-cancer drug design. To promote the successful selection of drug targets, each potential target should be subjected to a systems biology scrutiny to locate effective and specific targets while minimizing undesirable side effects. The gene p53 is considered a good candidate for such a target because it has been implicated in 50% of all cancers and is considered to encode a hub protein that is highly connected to other proteins. Using P53 as a test case, this paper explores the capacity of the systems biology tool, CellDesigner, to aid in the selection of anticancer drug targets and to serve as a teaching resource for human resource development.
