Solid mineral-based particles have been proposed as alternatives to sulfates for climate intervention by stratospheric aerosol injection, as a means for improving optical or chemical characteristics and thereby minimize risks and uncertainties. However, the heterogeneous reactivity of solid particles with stratospheric trace gases, and possible implications to the ozone layer, is currently not fully constrained, particularly at stratospheric concentrations. We present a systematic comparative study of the uptake of HNO3, HCl, and NO2 on calcite, alumina, crystalline silica (quartz), and amorphous silica, using complementary Knudsen cell and flow reactor techniques. We find that NO2 uptake is weak on all surfaces, with estimated removal timescales indicating negligible impact on stratospheric nitrogen chemistry. Conversely, HCl uptake is substantial, with a pronounced concentration dependence consistent with surface site limited Langmuir adsorption. Extracting adsorption isotherms, we find that HCl surface coverage at stratospheric concentrations differs by four orders of magnitude between the surfaces, with calcite adsorbing the most and amorphous silica the least, suggesting a dom
Public elevation data can support landscape research, environmental interpretation, planning, education, and public engagement, but their practical reuse is often limited by fragmented delivery and specialist processing requirements. This paper presents RO-LiDAR GeoQuickView, an independent, voluntary, and non-commercial Web-GIS initiative for exploring and reusing publicly accessible elevation data in Romania. The platform integrates LiDAR-derived digital terrain models (DTMs) and complementary elevation models of different resolutions, publishes standardized hillshade visualizations for immediate browser access, supports participatory landscape documentation, and provides a spatial index for direct raster retrieval. Its most detailed currently integrated component is the 0.5 m LAKI III Zone A DTM coverage for Caras-Severin, Gorj, Mehedinti, and Dolj counties. LAKI III Zone B, comprising Suceava, Neamt, Bacau, and Vrancea counties, is the next scheduled high-resolution extension. It will be integrated after the public products become available and pass through the same harmonization and quality-control workflow. The platform also incorporates LAKI II and additional public altimetr
Urban to rural migration is a less-researched phenomenon compared to its counterpart: rural to urban migration. In parts of Europe, an increasing number of people living in big urban centers within the country, or moving from other countries decide to relocate to rural areas. In this paper, we examine this phenomenon by analysing content posted on TikTok that documents this transition. We collected a corpus of 901 videos posted until late 2025, documenting urban to rural migration in Romania, under three hashtags, which have collectively been played a total of 24 million times at the time when we gathered the dataset. We analyse this corpus both quantitatively and qualitatively and discuss our findings through the lens of digital rurality - a theory based on Harvey's and Soja's spatial triad, applied to rural spaces, and based on the role of digital technologies as (re-)mediators of everyday lived experience. Specifically, we analyze the corpus as: (a) digital rural localities, (b) formal representations of the digital rural, and (c) everyday lives of the digital rural. We find that (a) Social media platforms enable new forms of paid labor that sometimes involve the commodification
In this article, models for assessing national intangible resources are analysed through a lecture in the literature, and the best-known evaluation methods are categorized into academic models and models of international organizations, with the most important differences being identified. The European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) and the World Economic Forum annual reports on Global Competitiveness were considered to assess Romania's position in the international context in terms of intangible assets. Despite the importance of intangible resources at national level and the fact that they are an important factor in determining economic growth in the current knowledge-based economy, this article concludes that Romania's position in the international context regarding intangible assets is very weak, with many weak points in research and innovation performance compared to other EU Member States. Therefore, there is a need in our country to re-evaluate the areas where all efforts need to be focused to stimulate innovation performance, to properly manage national intangible resources, a crucial process for improving the quality of life.
This volume contains the proceedings of the 9th Working Formal Methods Symposium, which was held at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, Iaşi, Romania on September 17-19, 2025.
The overconsumption of consumers under today's increasingly scarce natural resources has overwhelmed the textile industry in middle-income countries, such as Romania. It is becoming more and more essential to encourage sustainable clothing consumption behaviors, such as purchasing recyclable clothes. Notwithstanding there is a limited number of studies trying to understand the intrinsic factors that motivate consumers' purchase intention toward sustainable clothes in middle-income countries. Moreover, the effect of consumers' environmental knowledge on determining their purchase intention of sustainable clothes remains understudied. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to make a significant contribution to the sustainable consumption literature by providing a consolidated framework that explores the behavioral factors inclining Romanian consumers' purchase intention towards sustainable clothes. The foundation of this study combines consumers' social value orientation and the theory of planned behavior. the partial least square path modelling procedure was used to analyze the data of 1,018 Romanian respondents. The findings of this study show that altruistic value orientation,
This study explores how refugees' destination preferences evolve during transit, with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe, particularly Romania. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analyse data from the International Organization for Migration's (IOM) Flow Monitoring Surveys and complement it with qualitative insights from focus group discussions with refugees. The quantitative analysis reveals that refugees' preferences for destination countries often change during transit, influenced by factors such as safety concerns, asylum conditions, education, and the presence of relatives at the destination. Our results support the application of bounded rationality and human capital theory, showing that while economic opportunities are important, safety becomes the dominant concern during transit. The qualitative analysis adds depth to these findings, highlighting the role of political instability, social networks, and economic hardships as initial migration drivers. Additionally, the study reveals how refugees reassess their destination choices based on their experiences in transit countries, with Romania emerging as a viable settlement destination due to its relative stability and acces
Carbon emissions have become a specific alarming indicators and intricate challenges that lead an extended argue about climate change. The growing trend in the utilization of fossil fuels for the economic progress and simultaneously reducing the carbon quantity has turn into a substantial and global challenge. The aim of this paper is to examine the driving factors of CO$_2$ emissions from energy sector in Romania during the period 2008-2022 emissions using the log mean Divisia index (LMDI) method and takes into account five items: CO$_2$ emissions, primary energy resources, energy consumption, gross domestic product and population, the driving forces of CO$_2$ emissions, based on which it was calculated the contribution of carbon intensity, energy mixes, generating efficiency, economy, and population. The results indicate that generating efficiency effect -90968.57 is the largest inhibiting index while economic effect is the largest positive index 69084.04 having the role of increasing CO$_2$ emissions.
We present a detailed description of seismic activity in Romania, Italy, and Japan, as well as the California seismic zone in the United States of America, based on the statistical analysis of the underlying earthquake networks used to model the aforementioned zones. Our results on network connectivity and simple network motifs allow for a complex description of seismic zones, while at the same time reinforcing the current understanding of seismicity as a critical phenomenon. The reported distributions on node connectivity, three-, and four-event motifs are consistent with power-law, i.e., scale-free, distributions over large intervals and are robust across earthquake networks obtained from different discretizations of the seismic zones of interest. In our analysis of the distributions of node connectivity and simple motifs, we distinguish between the global distribution and the powerlaw part of it with the help of maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method and complementary cumulative distribution functions (CCDF). The main message is that the distributions reported for the aforementioned seismic zones have large power-law components, extending over some orders of magnitude, indep
Entangled photons are crucial for the development of quantum technologies and especially important in quantum communications. Hence it is paramount to have a reliable, high-fidelity source of entangled photons. Here we describe the construction and characterization of a polarization-entangled photon source. We generate maximally-entangled Bell states using a type-II PPKTP nonlinear crystal inside a Sagnac interferometer. We characterize the source in terms of brightness, visibility, Bell-CHSH test and we perform quantum-state tomography of the density matrix. Our source violates Bell-CHSH inequality $|S|\le 2$ by $n=22$ standard deviations. With visibilities up to ${\cal V}= 98.9\%$ and fidelity ${\cal F}= 97\%$, our source is highly competitive, with state-of-the-art performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first source of entangled-photons designed and build in Romania and as such, represents an important step for the development of quantum technologies in our country. We envisage that our results will stimulate the progress of quantum technologies in Romania and will educate the future generation of quantum engineers.
This paper identifies the salient factors that characterize the inequality income distribution for Romania. Data analysis is rigorously carried out using sophisticated techniques borrowed from classical statistics (Theil). Decomposition of the inequalities measured by the Theil index is also performed. This study relies on an exhaustive (11.1 million records for 2014) data-set for total personal gross income of Romanian citizens.
We analyze the income distribution of employees for 9 consecutive years (2001-2009) using a complete social security database for an economically important district of Romania. The database contains detailed information on more than half million taxpayers, including their monthly salaries from all employers where they worked. Besides studying the characteristic distribution functions in the high and low/medium income limits, the database allows us a detailed dynamical study by following the time-evolution of the taxpayers income. To our knowledge, this is the first extensive study of this kind (a previous japanese taxpayers survey was limited to two years). In the high income limit we prove once again the validity of Pareto's law, obtaining a perfect scaling on four orders of magnitude in the rank for all the studied years. The obtained Pareto exponents are quite stable with values around $α\approx 2.5$, in spite of the fact that during this period the economy developed rapidly and also a financial-economic crisis hit Romania in 2007-2008. For the low and medium income category we confirmed the exponential-type income distribution. Following the income of employees in time, we have
Ediacaran fossils are now largely known in different parts of the world. However, some countries are poorly documented on these remains of a still enigmatic life. Thus, rare fossils from the Neoproterozoic Histria Formation of central Dobrogea (Romania) have been reported. Two specimens with discoid imprints are described here in detail and assigned to the typical Ediacaran species Beltanelliformis brunsae Menner in Keller et al., 1974. This paleontological development confirms both the large geographical distribution of this species and the Ediacaran age of the Histria Formation. This is the first graduate course on elementary quantum mechanics in Internet written in Romanian for the benefit of Romanian speaking students (Romania and Moldova). It is a translation (with corrections) of the Spanish version of the course (physics/9808031, English translation physics/0004072), which I did at the request of students of physics in Bucharest. The topics included refer to the postulates of quantum mechanics, one-dimensional barriers and wells, angular momentum and spin, WKB method, harmonic oscillator, hydrogen atom, quantum scattering, and partial waves
Over the last period, increasing attention has been paid to measurement of small forces which play a more important role in nanotechnology and other significant areas such as MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) and NEMS (nano-electro-mechanical systems) which can be found into everyday products (mobile phones, MP3 players, PCs, cars). In this respect, the development of mass standards and measurement techniques below the current limit of 1 milligram is vital to provide traceability to the SI for such measurements. In Romania, the Mass laboratory of INM considered it necessary to extend the dissemination of the mass unit below 1 mg, in order to meet current needs. Using the subdivision method and starting from the national prototype kilogram No. 2, all necessary experiments were performed for the first time in Romania to extend mass unit traceability till 100 μg. This extension also supports the provision of mass calibrations for low force measurements. The associated measurement procedure and measurement uncertainty results obtained in the calibration are described. In the article are also presented some of the worldwide methods currently used for measuring small forces.
Superbolides, i.e. extremely bright meteors produced by entries of meter-sized bodies into terrestrial atmosphere, are rare events. We present here detailed analysis of a superbolide, which occurred over Romania on January 7, 2015. The trajectory, velocity, and orbit were determined using two all-sky photographs from a station of the European Fireball Network (EN) in Slovakia and five casual video records from Romania, which were carefully calibrated. Bolide light curve was measured by EN radiometers. We found that the entry speed was 27.76 $\pm$ 0.19 km/s, significantly lower than reported by US Government sensors. The orbit was asteroidal with low inclination and aphelion inside Jupiter's orbit. The atmospheric behavior was, however, not typical for an asteroidal body. The peak brightness of absolute magnitude of -21 was reached at a quite large height of 42.8 km and the brightness then decreased quickly. The bolide almost disappeared at a height of 38.7 km, leaving just a stationary luminous trail visible for several seconds. Only one small fragment continued until the height of 36 km. Brief meteorite searches were unsuccessful. The modeling of the light curve revealed that the
To complement the neutrino-physics lectures given at the 2011 International School on Astro Particle Physics devoted to Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics (ISAPP 2011; Varenna, Italy), at the 2011 European School of High Energy Physics (ESHEP 2011; Cheila Gradistei, Romania), and, in modified form, at other summer schools, we present here a written description of the physics of neutrino oscillation. This description is centered on a new way of deriving the oscillation probability. We also provide a brief guide to references relevant to topics other than neutrino oscillation that were covered in the lectures.
We come out in this paper with an astroclimatological study of meteorological data on relative humidity, dew point temperature, air temperature, wind speed, barometric air pressure, and sky cloudiness recorded at four Romanian locations (Baisoara, Rosia Montana, Semenic, Ceahlau) and Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) located at Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos, in the Canary Islands. Long term trends of microclimates have been compared in order to identify the site-to-site variations. We have performed this analysis as part of a site testing campaign aimed at finding the best location for the establishment of a small Cherenkov telescope in Romania. The conditions at the Romanian sites have been compared to those of the Canary Islands considered as a reference. A statistical approach has been used for data analysis. Monthly and annual samples have been extracted from series of raw data for nighttime, daytime and entire day intervals. Percentage distributions of meteorological parameters, whose values exceed certain limits, have been derived. Significant differences have been found between the Romanian sites and the NOT site. The comparison of the Romanian locations indicates Bai
Socio-economic inequalities derived from an exhaustive wealth distribution is studied in a closed geographical region from Transylvania (Romania). Exhaustive wealth data is computed from the agricultural records of the Sancraiu commune for three different economic situations. The gathered data is spanning two different periods from the communist economy and the present situation after 31 years of free market economy in Romania. The local growth and reset model based on an analytically solvable master equation is used to describe the observed data. The model with realistically chosen growth and reset rates is successful in describing both the experimentally observed distributions and the inequality indexes (Lorenz curve, Gini coefficient and Pareto point) derived from this data. The observed changes in these inequality measures are discussed in the context of the relevant socio-economic conditions.
Gamma-Beams at the HIgS facility in the USA and anticipated at the ELI-NP facility, now constructed in Romania, present unique new opportunities to advance research in nuclear astrophysics; not the least of which is resolving open questions in oxygen formation during stellar helium burning via a precise measurement of the 12C(a,g) reaction. Time projection chamber (TPC) detectors operating with low pressure gas (as an active target) are ideally suited for such studies. We review the progress of the current research program and plans for the future at the HIγS facility with the optical readout TPC (O-TPC) and the development of an electronic readout TPC for the ELI-NP facility (ELITPC).
