I analyze images of the Crab Nebula core-collapse supernova (CCSN) remnant in light of recent three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the jittering-jets explosion mechanism (JJEM) and identify a southern ring opposite to the northern jet, which I attribute to a counterjet. The Crab Nebula is known for its point-symmetric morphology of seven pairs of bays and a pair of two filaments, but no pairs of two jets or their direct outcomes, like ears and rings, have been identified. I identify a ring in visible and infrared images of the Crab Nebula opposite to the prominent northern jet. Recent hydrodynamical simulations of the JJEM show that jets that explode CCSNe can form such circum-jet rings. I, therefore, attribute the shaping of the southern ring to a southern jet, a counter jet to the northern jet, both of which participated in the explosion of the Crab Nebula in the framework of the JJEM.
The Ultraviolet Near-Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS) is a "collaboration of collaborations" that is using the Canada-France-Hawai'i Telescope, the Pan-STARRS telescopes, and the Subaru Observatory to obtain $ugriz$ images of a core survey region of 6250 deg$^2$ of the northern sky. The $10σ$ point source depth of the data, as measured within a 2-arcsecond diameter aperture, are $[u,g,r,i,z] = [23.7, 24.5, 24.2, 23.8, 23.3]$\ in AB magnitudes. UNIONS is addressing some of the most fundamental questions in astronomy, including the properties of dark matter, the growth of structure in the Universe from the very smallest galaxies to large-scale structure, and the assembly of the Milky Way. It is set to become the major ground-based legacy survey for the northern hemisphere for the next decade and provides an essential northern complement to the static-sky science of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time. UNIONS supports the core science mission of the {\it Euclid} space mission by providing the data necessary in the northern hemisphere for the calibration of the wavelength dependence of the {\it Euclid} point-spread function and derivation of photome
Saturn's moon Titan undergoes a long annual cycle of 29.45 Earth years. Titan's northern winter and spring were investigated in detail by the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft (2004-2017), but the northern summer season remains sparsely studied. Here we present new observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Keck II telescope made in 2022 and 2023 during Titan's late northern summer. Using JWST's mid-infrared instrument, we spectroscopically detected the methyl radical, the primary product of methane break-up and key to the formation of ethane and heavier molecules. Using the near-infrared spectrograph onboard JWST, we detected several non-local thermodynamic equilibrium CO and CO2 emission bands, which allowed us to measure these species over a wide altitude range. Lastly, using the near-infrared camera onboard JWST and Keck II, we imaged northern hemisphere tropospheric clouds evolving in altitude, which provided new insights and constraints on seasonal convection patterns. These observations pave the way for new observations and modelling of Titan's climate and meteorology as it progresses through the northern fall equinox, when its atmosphere is expected to show notabl
We present spectroscopy of three planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Northern Spur of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) obtained with the Double Spectrograph on the 5.1 m Hale Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. The samples are selected from the observations of Merrett et al. Our purpose is to investigate formation of the substructures of M31 using PNe as a tracer of chemical abundances. The [O III] 4363 auroral line is detected in the spectra of two objects, enabling temperature determinations. Ionic abundances are derived from the observed collisionally excited lines, and elemental abundances of nitrogen, oxygen, and neon as well as sulphur and argon are estimated. Correlations between oxygen and the alpha-element abundance ratios are studied, using our sample and the M31 disk and bulge PNe from the literature. In one of the three PNe, we observed relatively higher oxygen abundance compared to the disk sample in M31 at similar galactocentric distances. The results of at least one of the three Northern Spur PNe might be in line with the proposed possible origin of the Northern Spur substructure of M31, i.e. the Northern Spur is connected to the Southern Stream and both substructures compris
The importance of snow cover and ice extent in the Northern Hemisphere was recognized by various authors leading to a positive feedback of surface reflectivity on climate. In fact, the retreat of Arctic sea ice is accompanied by enhanced solar input in the Arctic region, i.e. a decrease of the terrestrial albedo. We have studied this effect for the past six decades and estimate the corresponding global warming in the northern hemisphere. A simple 1-dimensional model is used that includes the simultaneous increase of the greenhouse gases. Our results indicate that the latter directly cause a temperature rise of only 0.2 K in 1955 to 2015, while a notably larger effect 0.7 +/- 0.2 K is found for the loss of Arctic sea ice in the same time. These numbers comprise most of the reported mean temperature rise of 1.2 +/- 0.2 K of the northern hemisphere. The origin of the sea-ice retreat is discussed, e.g. internal variability or feedback by the CO2 concentration increase. Our data also suggest a delayed response of the global surface temperature rise to the loss of sea ice with a time constant of approximately 10 to 20 years.
By the 2040s--50s, facilities such as \emph{Gaia}, WEAVE, 4MOST, Rubin, \emph{Euclid}, \emph{Roman}, and the ESO ELT will have transformed our global view of the Milky Way. Yet key questions will remain incompletely resolved: a detailed reconstruction of the Galaxy's assembly from its earliest building blocks, and robust tests of dark matter granularity using the fine structure of the stellar halo and outer disk -- particularly in the Galactic anticenter. Addressing these questions requires high-resolution spectroscopy of faint main-sequence stars (typically 1--2 mag below the turnoff) and turnoff stars ($r \sim 21$--23) in low-surface-brightness structures: halo streams and shells, ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, the warped and flared outer disk, and anticenter substructures. We argue that addressing this science case requires a 30\,m-class telescope in the northern hemisphere, equipped with wide-field, highly multiplexed, high-resolution spectroscopic capabilities. Such a facility would enable (i) a Northern Halo Deep Survey of $\sim 10^{5}$--$10^{6}$ faint main-sequence and turnoff stars out to $\sim 150$--200\,kpc, (ii) chemodynamical mapping of dozens of streams to measure perturb
The rapidly increasing use of electric vehicles (EVs) has made it even more important to manage the charging infrastructure sustainably. The expansion of charging station networks, especially in large cities, creates serious logistical challenges for charging point operators (CPOs) in planning maintenance and repair activities. Inefficient field personnel management can lead to time loss, high operational costs, and resource waste. This study presents an integrated method to optimize the planning of EV charging network maintenance operations. The proposed approach groups charging stations according to geographical proximity using the K-means clustering algorithm and calculates the shortest routes between clusters using a genetic algorithm. The method was developed in Python and applied to a dataset consisting of 100 EV charging stations in Istanbul. Considering the population density, traffic density, and resource constraints of Istanbul, the route planning approach presented in this study has great potential, especially for such metropolises. According to the different parameter configurations tested, the most efficient scenario provided approximately 35\% distance savings compare
Meteoroids of a low-inclination stream hit the Earth arriving from a direction near the ecliptic. The radiant area of stream like this is often divided into two parts: one is situated northward and the other southward of the ecliptic. In other words, two showers are caused by such a stream. Well-known examples of such showers are the Northern Taurids, #17, and Southern Taurids, #2, or the Northern $δ$-Aquariids, #26, and Southern $δ$-Aquariids, #5. While the meteoroids of the northern shower collide with the Earth in the descending node, those of the southern shower collide with our planet in the ascending node of their orbits. Because of this circumstance and tradition, the northern and southern showers must be distinguished. Unfortunately, this is not always the case with meteor showers listed in the IAU Meteor Data Center (MDC). For the same shower, some authors reported a set of its mean parameters corresponding to the northern shower and other authors to the southern shower. We found eleven such cases in the MDC. In this paper, we propose corrections of these mis-identifications.
The Pierre Auger Observatory is a multi-national project for research on ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The Southern Auger Observatory in Mendoza province, Argentina, is approaching completion in 2007 with an instrumented area of 3,000 km^2. It will accurately measure the spectrum and composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays up to and beyond the predicted GZK feature. We are obtaining results on the energy spectrum, mass composition and distribution of arrival directions on the southern sky. The Northern Auger Observatory is designed to complete and extend the investigations begun in the South. It will establish charged particle astronomy and thus open a new window into the universe. The distribution of arrival directions of the highest energy events will point the way to unveiling the almost century old mystery of the origin and nature of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Achieving this goal requires collecting many more events in spite of the steeply falling energy spectrum. The planned northern site will have an instrumented area of 4,000 square miles (10,370 km}^2 in Southeast Colorado, USA. The paper covers the science of charged particle astronomy, the layout and the technic
The data of the 2009 A(H1N1) epidemic in Istanbul, Turkey is unique in terms of the collected data, which include not only the hospitalization but also the fatality information recorded during the pandemic. The analysis of this data displayed an unexpected time shift between the hospital referrals and fatalities. This time shift, which does not conform to the SIR and SEIR models, was explained by multi-stage SIR and SEIR models [21]. In this study we prove that the delay for these models is half of the infectious period within a quadratic approximation, and we determine the epidemic parameters $R_0$, $T$ and $I_0$ of the 2009 A(H1N1) Istanbul and Netherlands epidemics. These epidemic parameters were estimated by comparing the normalized cumulative fatality data with the solutions of the SIR model. Two different error criteria, the $L_2$ norms of the error over the whole observation period and over the initial portion of the data, were used in order to obtain the best-fitting models. It was observed that, with respect to both criteria, the parameters of "good" models were agglomerated along a line in the $T$-$R_0$ plane, instead of being scattered uniformly around a "best" model. As
We analyse MESSENGER reflectance measurements covering the northern polar region of Mercury, the least studied region of the northern mercurian hemisphere. We use observations from the Mercury Dual Imaging System Wide-Angle Camera (MDIS/WAC) and the Mercury Atmospheric and Surface Composition Spectrometer (MASCS/VIRS) to study the spectral dependence of the surface reflectance. The results obtained from the observations made by both instruments are remarkably consistent. We find that a second degree polynomial description of the measured reflectance spectra gives very good fits to the data and that the information that they carry can best be characterized by two parameters, the mean reflectance and the mean relative spectral slope, averaged over the explored range of wavelengths. The properties of the four main types of terrains known to form Mercury's regolith in the northern region, smooth plains (SP), heavily cratered terrain (HCT), fresh ejecta/materials and red pitted ground (RPG) are examined in terms of these two parameters. The results are compared, and found consistent with those obtained by earlier studies in spite of difficulties met in obtaining accurate reflectance mea
We present a catalogue of galaxies in the northern Zone of Avoidance (ZoA), extracted from the shallow version of the blind HI survey with the Effelsberg 100 m radio telescope, EBHIS, that has a sensitivity of 23 mJy/beam at 10.24 km/s velocity resolution. The catalogue comprises 170 detections in the region Dec >= -5 degrees and |b| < 6 degrees. About a third of the detections (N=67) have not been previously recorded in HI. While 29 detections have no discernible counterpart at any wavelength other than HI, 48 detections (28%) have a counterpart visible on optical or NIR images but are not recorded as such in the literature. New HI detections were found as close as 7.5 Mpc (EZOA J2120+45), and at the edge of the Local Volume, at 10.1 Mpc, we have found two previously unknown dwarf galaxies (EZOA J0506+31 and EZOA J0301+56). Existing large-scale structures crossing the northern ZoA have been established more firmly by the new detections, with the possibility of new filaments. We conclude that the high rate of 39% new HI\detections in the northern ZoA, which has been extensively surveyed with targeted observations in the past, proves the power of blind HI surveys. FLEURS offers n-way parallel speech for 100+ languages, but Northern Kurdish is not one of them, which limits benchmarking for automatic speech recognition and speech translation tasks in this language. We present FLEURS-Kobani, a Northern Kurdish (ISO 639-3 KMR) spoken extension of the FLEURS benchmark. The FLEURS-Kobani dataset consists of 5,162 validated utterances, totaling 18 hours and 24 minutes. The data were recorded by 31 native speakers. It extends benchmark coverage to an under-resourced Kurdish variety. As baselines, we fine-tuned Whisper v3-large for ASR and E2E S2TT. A two-stage fine-tuning strategy (Common Voice to FLEURS-Kobani) yields the best ASR performance (WER 28.11, CER 9.84 on test). For E2E S2TT (KMR to EN), Whisper achieves 8.68 BLEU on test; we additionally report pivot-derived targets and a cascaded S2TT setup. FLEURS-Kobani provides the first public Northern Kurdish benchmark for evaluation of ASR, S2TT and S2ST tasks. The dataset is publicly released for research use under a CC BY 4.0 license.
This study as part of an ongoing research effort, empirically examines the relationship between foreign trade in the Istanbul Ataturk Airport Free Zone and exchange rate movements. Monthly data from 2003 to 2016 were analyzed through stationarity tests (Unit Root), followed by the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model, Cointegration Analysis, and the Toda-Yamamoto Causality Test. The findings indicate that the exchange rate does not significantly affect imports and exports in the free zone. This result suggests that free zones, due to their structural characteristics and operational framework, may be relatively insulated from exchange rate fluctuations. The study contributes to the literature by providing a focused analysis of a specific free zone in Turkiye, highlighting the potential independence of free zone trade from exchange rate volatility.
Within a GIS environment, we combine field measures of mangrove diameter, mangrove species distribution, and mangrove density with remotely sensed measures of mangrove location and mangrove canopy cover to estimate the mangrove carbon holdings of northern Ecuador. We find that the four northern estuaries of Ecuador contain approximately 7,742,999 t (plus or minus 15.47 percent) of standing carbon. Of particular high carbon holdings are the Rhizophora mangle dominated mangrove stands found in-and-around the Cayapas-Mataje Ecological Reserve in northern Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador and certain stands of Rhizophora mangle in-and-around the Isla Corazon y Fragata Wildlife Refuge in central Manabi Province, Ecuador. Our field driven mangrove carbon estimate is higher than all but one of the comparison models evaluated. We find that basic latitudinal mangrove carbon models performed at least as well, if not better, than the more complex species based allometric models in predicting standing carbon levels. In addition, we find that improved results occur when multiple models are combined as opposed to relying any one single model for mangrove carbon estimates. The high level of carbon con
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a one-cubic-kilometer-sized neutrino telescope deployed deep in the Antarctic ice at the South Pole. One of IceCube's major goals is finding the origins of astrophysical high-energy neutrinos. In 2022, IceCube identified the strongest point-like neutrino source so far, the active galaxy NGC 1068. Analyzing 9 years of muon-neutrino data from the Northern Sky recorded between 2011 and 2020, the emission from NGC 1068 is significant at 4.2$\,σ$. We present a planned extension to this search with additional years of data. One of these years includes data from 2010 when IceCube was only partially constructed. We discuss the improvement in sensitivity and discovery potential for neutrino point sources across the Northern sky. We show that by building on the established analysis techniques, previous observations could be improved, not only for NGC 1068 but for all possible sources in the Northern sky.
We compare the spatial distributions of galaxy clusters in the northern and southern galactic hemispheres, and the Abell and ACO clusters distributions. We perform a statistical (correlation and cluster) analysis of a sample of Abell and ACO galaxy clusters in the southern galactic hemisphere. We compare these results with a symmetric sample at northern galactic latitude taken from Postman et al. (1992). For the northern sample, we substantially confirm the results of Postman et al. We find that the two-point spatial correlation function of northern and southern clusters is comparable, with mean correlation length 19.6 Mpc and slope -1.8 positive up to about 45 Mpc. Percolation properties are remarkably similar in the northern and southern cluster samples. We give also a catalog of superclusters. In the south galactic hemisphere the main feature is a very rich, extended supercluster in the Horologium region at a redshift 0.06, near to a large void.
We model the northern middle radio lobe of Centaurus A (NGC 5128) as a buoyant bubble of plasma deposited by an intermittently active jet. The extent of the rise of the bubble and its morphology imply that the ratio of its density to that of the surrounding ISM is less than 10^{-2}, consistent with our knowledge of extragalactic jets and minimal entrainment into the precursor radio lobe. Using the morphology of the lobe to date the beginning of its rise through the atmosphere of Centaurus A, we conclude that the bubble has been rising for approximately 140Myr. This time scale is consistent with that proposed by Quillen et al. (1993) for the settling of post-merger gas into the presently observed large scale disk in NGC 5128, suggesting a strong connection between the delayed re-establishment of radio emission and the merger of NGC 5128 with a small gas-rich galaxy. This suggests a connection, for radio galaxies in general, between mergers and the delayed onset of radio emission. In our model, the elongated X-ray emission region discovered by Feigelson et al. (1981), part of which coincides with the northern middle lobe, is thermal gas that originates from the ISM below the bubble a
SPECULOOS is a ground-based transit survey consisting of six identical 1-m robotic telescopes. The immediate goal of the project is to detect temperate terrestrial planets transiting nearby ultracool dwarfs (late M-dwarf stars and brown dwarfs), which could be amenable for atmospheric research with the next generation of telescopes. Here, we report the developments of the northern counterpart of the project - SPECULOOS Northern Observatory, and present its performance during the first three years of operations from mid-2019 to mid-2022. Currently, the observatory consists of one telescope, which is named Artemis. The Artemis telescope demonstrates remarkable photometric precision, allowing it to be ready to detect new transiting terrestrial exoplanets around ultracool dwarfs. Over the period of the first three years after the installation, we observed 96 objects from the SPECULOOS target list for 6000 hours with a typical photometric precision of $0.5\%$, and reaching a precision of $0.2\%$ for relatively bright non-variable targets with a typical exposure time of 25 sec. Our weather downtime (clouds, high wind speed, high humidity, precipitation and/or high concentration of dust p
We present an updated three dimensional map of the Milky Way based on a sample of 2431 classical Cepheid variable stars, supplemented with about 200 newly detected classical Cepheids from the OGLE survey. The new objects were discovered as a result of a dedicated observing campaign of the ~280 square degree extension of the OGLE footprint of the Galactic disk during 2018-2019 observing seasons. These regions cover the main part of the northern Galactic warp that has been deficient in Cepheids so far. We use direct distances to the sample of over 2390 classical Cepheids to model the distribution of the young stellar population in the Milky Way and recalculate the parameters of the Galactic disk warp. Our data show that its northern part is very prominent and its amplitude is ~10% larger than that of the southern part. By combining Gaia astrometric data with the Galactic rotation curve and distances to Cepheids from our sample, we construct a map of the vertical component of the velocity vector for all Cepheids in the Milky Way disk. We find large-scale vertical motions with amplitudes of 10-20 km/s, such that Cepheids located in the northern warp exhibit large positive vertical velo
