The MacBook Air is a Macintosh notebook computer designed by Apple. It is positioned as the ultraportable in Apple's MacBook Family and was introduced at the Macworld Conference & Expo on January 15, 2008. It has been revised twice since the original release.When the MacBook Air was introduced, Apple described it as the world's thinnest notebook. After the release of the MacBook Air, Dell challenged that claim with the release of the Dell Adamo.

We demonstrate an early stage of our prototypical development of an earthquake early warning system based on Apple's MacBook computers. This system, called MacSeisApp, utilizes the Sudden Motion Sensors in MacBooks to detect seismic activities. It is inspired by an existing application called SeisMac, which turns a MacBook computer into a seismograph. MacSeisApp expands on SeisMac by using Apple's Push Notifications (APN) via a dedicated server for earthquake notification. Written in both the C and Objective-C under XCode Integrated Developer Environment (IDE), MacSeisApp utilizes an open-source library to detect the vibrations via the Sudden Motion Sensor and to translate it into points to be plotted as a seismograph.

Current Macintosh laptop computers are equipped with a 3-axis accelerometer that detects sudden shock and impact and enables the hard drive to “freeze” and save its contents. In addition, the newer Intel-based MacBook and MacBookPro laptops have built-in iSight video cameras for use in video conferencing communications. The Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Cyberinfrastructure Center (NEESit) has exploited these capabilities and has developed an educational and research platform for measurement and recording of vibrations and dynamic response. The system employs the NEESit Real-time data Viewer (RDV) that enables the real-time streaming of acceleration data synchronized with video, and automatically saves data into a database repository (NEEScentral). Through NEEScentral, earthquake engineering students and research collaborators worldwide can access the recorded data online and engage in joint projects, potentially at a worldwide scale. The following paper provides an overview of the information technology framework for the NEESit MacBook Accelerometer and Video Sensor Platform (iSeismograph) and its capabilities, and provides an example of its potential for collaboration through a classroom application for undergraduate education in earthquake engineering.

Since 1999, the College Library Instructional Computing Commons (CLICC) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has been lending laptops to the campus community. In the fall of 2007, CLICC deployed 300 dual boot MacBooks to replace its entire laptop lending pool and instructional laptops (247 PCs and 42 Macs). Offering both Windows XP Professional and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) on one hardware platform allowed CLICC to meet the growing demand to support classes with a video-editing component while maintaining a high level of satisfaction for its mostly Windows user base. Using a customized boot screen was the key to ensuring that users could quickly select their preferred operating system with ease. Each MacBook has 131 Windows and 83 Mac applications available for use. A survey showed 93% of users rated their MacBook experience a 4 or 5 out of 5. Since deployment, utilization of the laptop lending service has surged. In the first year after deployment, loans increased by 59% from the year before (77,439 in 2006-2007 to 123,082 in 2007-2008).

The ubiquitous webcam indicator LED is an important privacy feature which provides a visual cue that the camera is turned on. We describe how to disable the LED on a class of Apple internal iSight webcams used in some versions of MacBook laptops and iMac desktops. This enables video to be captured without any visual indication to the user and can be accomplished entirely in user space by an unprivileged (non-root) application. The same technique that allows us to disable the LED, namely reprogramming the firmware that runs on the iSight, enables a virtual machine escape whereby malware running inside a virtual machine reprograms the camera to act as a USB Human Interface Device (HID) keyboard which executes code in the host operating system. We build two proofs-of-concept: (1) an OS X application, iSeeYou, which demonstrates capturing video with the LED disabled; and (2) a virtual machine escape that launches Terminal.app and runs shell commands. To defend against these and related threats, we build an OS X kernel extension, iSightDefender, which prohibits the modification of the iSight's firmware from user space.
