The field of serious games for health has grown significantly, demonstrating effectiveness in various clinical contexts such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and degenerative neurological diseases. Despite their potential benefits, therapists face barriers to adopting serious games in rehabilitation, including limited training and game literacy, concerns about cost and equipment availability, and a lack of evidence-based research on game effectiveness. Serious games for rehabilitation often involve repetitive exercises, which can be tedious and reduce motivation for continued rehabilitation, treating clients as passive recipients of clinical outcomes rather than players. This study identifies gaps and provides essential insights for advancing serious games in rehabilitation, aiming to enhance their engagement for clients and effectiveness as a therapeutic tool. Addressing these challenges requires a paradigm shift towards developing and co-creating serious games for rehabilitation with therapists, researchers, and stakeholders. E-learning is a widely used learning method, but with the development of society, traditional E-learning method has exposed some shortcomings, such as the boring way of teaching, so that it is difficult to increase the enthusiasm of students and raise their attention in class. The application of serious games in E-learning can make up for these shortcomings and effectively improve the quality of teaching. When applying serious games to E-learning, there are two main considerations: educational goals and game design. A successful serious game should organically combine the two aspects and balance the educational and entertaining nature of serious games. This paper mainly discusses the role of serious games in E-learning, various elements of game design, the classification of the educational goals of serious games and the relationship between educational goals and game design. In addition, we try to classify serious games and match educational goals with game types to provide guidance and assistance in the design of serious games. This paper also summarizes some shortcomings that serious games may have in the application of E-learning.
Significant research work has been undertaken related to the game-based learning approach over the last years. However, a closer look at this work reveals that further research is needed to examine some types of game-based learning approaches such as virtual reality serious games and LEGO Serious Play. This article examines and compares the effectiveness for learning Scrum and related agile practices of a serious game based on virtual reality and a learning activity based on the LEGO Serious Play methodology. The presented study used a quasi-experimental design with two groups, pre- and post-tests, and a perceptions questionnaire. The sample was composed of 59 software engineering students, 22 of which belonged to group A, while the other 37 were part of group B. The students in group A played the virtual reality serious game, whereas the students in group B conducted the LEGO Serious Play activity. The results show that both game-based learning approaches were effective for learning Scrum and related agile practices in terms of learning performance and motivation, but they also show that the students who played the virtual reality serious game outperformed their peers from the oth
In the last few years, serious games have become popular, with a consensus of the benefits for teaching cyber security awareness and education. However, there is still a lack of pedagogical driven methodologies and tools to support serious games design to ensure they achieve the learning objectives. This paper proposes MOTENS, a pedagogical model, to design serious cyber games based on the gaps we identified in the current games design models and the lessons learnt from creating a serious tabletop game called Riskio, designed to teach cyber security awareness and education. The MOTENS model has six high-level components. Five components are linked to the games/design mechanics, and one component, `Theory', that supports the design's cognitive principles, including players' motivation. The model is used to design serious cyber games and goes through five stages, from identifying and segmenting target players, steps to creating game mechanics linked to pedagogy instruction and then to testing to create a serious game that is designed to achieve the games learning objectives.
Serious games are defined as applied games that focus on the gamification of an experience (e.g., learning and training activities) and are not strictly for entertainment purposes. In recent years, serious games have become increasingly popular due to their ability to simultaneously educate and entertain users. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the different types of digital games and expand on the serious games genre while focusing on its various applications. Furthermore, we present the most widely used game engines used in the game development industry and extend the Unity game machine advantages. Lastly, we conclude our research with a detailed comparison of the two most popular choices (Unreal and Unity engines) and their respective advantages and disadvantages while providing future suggestions for serious digital game development.
Serious games are increasingly being used in cybersecurity education to engage and educate users. Several studies with cybersecurity serious games have shown that they are successful in educating users and the users also find them both fun and engaging. Meanwhile, several studies have also reported issues in identifying real life effects of the game and even the long-term effects that they have. Based on our experience with enterprise cybersecurity games and games from recent literature, we discuss a few key challenges that must be considered while designing and evaluating serious games for cybersecurity awareness.
Naturally, university courses should be designed to attract students, engaging them to achieve learning goals. Toward this end, the use of Serious Games has been proposed in the literature. To address positive effects, such as content memorability and attendance rates, we propose Ambient Serious Games as games embedded in a computer-enriched environment, which is only partially perceived mentally by players. In this paper, we describe five technological key challenges that must be overcome to seamlessly and beneficially integrate an Ambient Serious Game into teaching. These challenges, derived from a scenario, focus on the technological provision and conduct of such games based on a software platform. They include (1) the integration of physical smart learning objects in heterogeneous environments under dynamic constraints, (2) the representation of abstract subject matter using smart learning objects, (3) the guided or automatic connection of all involved components, (4) the explanation of the components, their interaction, as well as the serious game itself, and (5) feedback on the game state.
Phobia is a widespread mental illness, and severe phobias can seriously impact patients daily lives. One-session Exposure Treatment (OST) has been used to treat phobias in the early days,but it has many disadvantages. As a new way to treat a phobia, virtual reality exposure therapy(VRET) based on serious games is introduced. In this paper, we explore the historical development of playable quantum physics related games (\textit{\textbf{quantum games}}). For the purpose of this examination, we have collected over 260 quantum games ranging from commercial games, applied and serious games, and games that have been developed at quantum themed game jams and educational courses. We provide an overview of the journey of quantum games across three dimensions: \textit{the perceivable dimension of quantum physics, the dimension of scientific purposes, and the dimension of quantum technologies}. We then further reflect on the definition of quantum games and its implications. While motivations behind developing quantum games have typically been educational or academic, themes related to quantum physics have begun to be more broadly utilised across a range of commercial games. Disability is an important factor affecting todays society. At the same time, more and more sub-healthy people are sick due to reduced body functions and cognitive functions. Human beings have been affected by disasters from the beginning of life, bringing them many sad memories. In the long struggle against disaster, people have devised a variety of methods to train relevant participants in disaster relief capabilities. However, many traditional training methods, such as disaster exercises may not provide effective training to meet the need of today. Serious games provide an innovative approach to train participants in disaster relief, and a large number of Serious Games for Disaster Relief (SGDRs) have been developed to train disaster planning and rescue capabilities. At the same time, there is no systematics phase description for disaster relief, which cannot effectively guide participants' work and training in disaster relief. Therefore, this paper proposes a comprehensive and professional disaster relief classification framework according to different relief work in each stage of the disaster. Based on this framework, we review the functions and technologies of serious games in each classification, which can offer reliable guidance for researchers to better understand and use SGDRs. Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have two main characteristics: inattention and impulsivity.It has many obstacles to the normal development of children and is very common among children.As an intervention, Serious games for ADHD(SGADs) have shown great potential and are very effective for these ADHD patients.Although many serious games have been developed for ADHD patients, but a review paper that summarizes and generalizes the topic of video games has not yet appeared.In this article, we first classified serious games about ADHD according to different platforms developed by video games, and then we conducted a systematic review of video games that can help children with ADHD diagnose and treat. Finally, we discussed and made suggestions based on the current development of SGADs.
As technology advances, conceptualizations of effective strategies for teaching and learning shift. Due in part to their facilitation of unique affordances for learning, mobile devices, augmented reality, and games are all becoming more prominent elements in learning environments. In this work, we examine mobile augmented reality serious games (MARSGs) as the intersection of these technology-based experiences and to what effect their combination can yield even greater learning outcomes. We present a PRISMA review of 23 papers (from 610) spanning the entire literature timeline from 2002 to 2023. Among these works, there is wide variability in the realized application of game elements and pedagogical theories underpinning the game experience. For an educational tool to be effective, it must be designed to facilitate learning while anchored by pedagogical theory. Head-mounted displays (HMDs) are popular immersive tools in general, not limited to entertainment but also for education, military, and serious games for health. While these displays have strong popularity, they still have user experience issues, triggering possible symptoms of discomfort to users. This condition is known as cybersickness (CS) and is one of the most popular research topics tied to virtual reality (VR) issues. We first present the main strategies focused on minimizing cybersickness problems in virtual reality. Following this, we propose a guideline framework based on CS causes such as locomotion, acceleration, the field of view, depth of field, degree of freedom, exposition use time, latency-lag, static rest frame, and camera rotation. Additionally, serious games applications and broader categories of games can also adopt it. Additionally, we categorized the imminent challenges for CS minimization into four different items. Conclusively, this work contributes as a consulting reference to enable VR developers and designers to optimize their VR users' experience and VR serious games.
Changes in payoffs can transform Prisoner's Dilemma and other social dilemmas into harmonious win-win games. Using the Robinson-Goforth topology of 2x2 games, this paper analyzes how payoff swaps turn Prisoner's Dilemma into other games, compares Prisoner's Dilemmas with other families of games, traces paths that affect the difficulty of transforming Prisoner's Dilemma and other social dilemmas into win-win games, and shows how ties connect simpler and more complex games. Charts illustrate the relationships between the 144 strict ordinal 2x2 games, the 38 symmetric 2x2 ordinal games with and without ties, and the complete set of 1,413 2x2 ordinal games. Payoffs from the symmetric ordinal 2x2 games combine to form asymmetric games, generating coordinates for a simple labeling scheme to uniquely identify and locate all asymmetric ordinal 2x2 games. The expanded topology elegantly maps relationships between 2x2 games with and without ties, enables a systematic understanding of the potential for transformations in social dilemmas and other strategic interactions, offers a tool for institutional analysis and design, and locates a variety of interesting games for further research.
An original serious game prototype named 'Puzzlegram' is created for the elderly demographic in group settings as the target players. Puzzlegram is precisely designed to accentuate memory, auditory interaction as well as haptic response to visual signals with the use of music. Music is introduced as a key component for establishing the game design that provides a source of meaningful contextualization (familiar music from the past) for setting the game mechanics, which facilitated the construction of the serious game design process. The discussion topics raised include the need to design serious games for fostering meaningful interactions, as well as developing a thorough framework for constructing purposeful design for serious games. A potential integral of artificial intelligence to Puzzlegram may involve assigning a novel dimension to its existing problem solving task by adapting to varying states of cognitive function for monitoring purposes based on an individual's interaction with the game.
Motivation to perform movement therapy and caregiver burnout are major challenges to post-stroke life. Serious games have been shown to support therapeutic tasks in people with stroke, but there are few activities that simultaneously support informal caregiver health, which is also impacted post-stroke. Here, we present a collaborative, mutually beneficial, serious game designed to support therapy for persons with stroke and also exercise for their informal caregivers. One player performs rehabilitative wrist movements - useful to people with stroke - and the other performs a seated march exercise - useful to informal caregivers - via pedals or a keyboard to control their avatar. We present a pilot study with 6 healthy dyads to evaluate how exercise-based input of one player, the Pseudo Caregiver (PCG), impacts motivation and emotional experience in both the PCG and Pseudo Person with Stroke (PPS). While not statistically significant, we find that PCGs Interest subscale scores trended higher when using a pedal (the exercised-based input) compared to a keyboard, regardless of game play mode. Serious scientific games are games whose purpose is not only fun. In the field of science, the serious goals include crucial activities for scientists: outreach, teaching and research. The number of serious games is increasing rapidly, in particular citizen science games, games that allow people to produce and/or analyze scientific data. Interestingly, it is possible to build a set of rules providing a guideline to create or improve serious games. We present arguments gathered from our own experience ( Phylo , DocMolecules , HiRE-RNA contest and Pangu) as well as examples from the growing literature on scientific serious games.
The use of educational games for pedagogical practice can provide new conceptions of teaching-learning in an interactive environment stimulating the acquisition of new knowledge. The so-called serious games are focused on the goal of transmitting educational content or training to the user. In the context of entrepreneurship, serious games appear to have greater importance due to the multidisciplinary of the knowledge needed. Therefore, we propose the adoption of the Entrexplorer game in the context of a university classroom. The game is a cloud-based serious game about the theme of entrepreneurship where users can access learning contents that will assist them in the acquisition of entrepreneurial skills. The organization of the game in eight levels with six additional floors let students learn the different dimensions of an entrepreneurship project while progressing during the gameplay.
Recent years have seen an explosive increase in research on large language models (LLMs), and accompanying public engagement on the topic. While starting as a niche area within natural language processing, LLMs have shown remarkable potential across a broad range of applications and domains, including games. This paper surveys the current state of the art across the various applications of LLMs in and for games, and identifies the different roles LLMs can take within a game. Importantly, we discuss underexplored areas and promising directions for future uses of LLMs in games and we reconcile the potential and limitations of LLMs within the games domain. As the first comprehensive survey and roadmap at the intersection of LLMs and games, we are hopeful that this paper will serve as the basis for groundbreaking research and innovation in this exciting new field.
