Hong Kong' senior geography curriculum has included GIS since the early 2000s. However, GIS in secondary schools does not play a significant role in Hong Kong secondary geography education. Analyzing GIS benefits by literature review, it is believed that GIS should be included in both the senior and junior geography curriculum. Moreover, the literature review indicates that without clear instruction from the Hong Kong Education Bureau (EDB), low preparedness of Hong Kong geography teachers, and unsupportive attitudes from academia and textbook publishers, GIS cannot be implemented in secondary schools of Hong Kong. Therefore, suggestions are made for the EDB, geography teachers, academia and textbook publishers to facilitate GIS involvement in senior and junior geography curriculums. The EDB can develop clear guidelines for teachers, academia and textbook publishers' references, and offer student-centered GIS educational courses for teachers. It is important for teachers to be prepared for advanced GIS technology and to even learn along with students. Academics and textbook publishers can provide free GIS maps targeted at Hong Kong' junior and senior geography curriculums. Although
In the Hong Kong Observatory, the Analogue Forecast System (AFS) for precipitation has been providing useful reference in predicting possible daily rainfall scenarios for the next 9 days, by identifying historical cases with similar weather patterns to the latest output from the deterministic model of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Recent advances in machine learning allow more sophisticated models to be trained using historical data and the patterns of high-impact weather events to be represented more effectively. As such, an enhanced AFS has been developed using the deep learning technique autoencoder. The datasets of the fifth generation of the ECMWF Reanalysis (ERA5) are utilised where more meteorological elements in higher horizontal, vertical and temporal resolutions are available as compared to the previous ECMWF reanalysis products used in the existing AFS. The enhanced AFS features four major steps in generating the daily rain class forecasts: (1) preprocessing of gridded ERA5 and ECMWF model forecast, (2) feature extraction by the pretrained autoencoder, (3) application of optimised feature weightings based on historical cases, and (4) cal
The implementation of quantum repeaters needed for long-distance quantum communication requires the generation of quantum entanglement distributed among the elementary links. These entanglements must be swapped among the quantum repeaters through Bell-state measurements. This study aims to improve the entanglement generation rate by frequency multiplexing the Bell-state measurements. As a preliminary step of the frequency-multiplexed Bell-state measurements, three frequency modes are mapped to a temporal mode by an atomic frequency comb prepared in $\mathrm{Pr^{3+}}$ ion-doped $\mathrm{Y_2SiO_5}$ crystals using a weak coherent state, and Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, which is a measure of the indistinguishability of two inputs, is observed in each frequency mode by coincidence detection. The visibility for all the modes was 40%-42% (theoretically up to 50%). Furthermore, we show that a mixture of different modes is avoided. The present results are connected to frequency-selective Bell-state measurements and therefore frequency-multiplexed quantum repeaters.
The voting system in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (Legco) is sometimes unicameral and sometimes bicameral, depending on whether the bill is proposed by the Hong Kong government. Therefore, although without any representative within Legco, the Hong Kong government has certain degree of legislative power --- as if there is a virtual representative of the Hong Kong government within the Legco. By introducing such a virtual representative of the Hong Kong government, we show that Legco is a three-dimensional voting system. We also calculate two power indices of the Hong Kong government through this virtual representative and consider the $C$-dimension and the $W$-dimension of Legco. Finally, some implications of this Legco model to the current constitutional reform in Hong Kong will be given.
Interference between single photons is key for many quantum optics experiments and applications in quantum technologies, such as quantum communication or computation. It is advantageous to operate the systems at telecommunication wavelengths and to integrate the setups for these applications in order to improve stability, compactness and scalability. A new promising material platform for integrated quantum optics is lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). Here, we realise Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference between telecom photons from an engineered parametric down-conversion source in an LNOI directional coupler. The coupler has been designed and fabricated in house and provides close to perfect balanced beam splitting. We obtain a raw HOM visibility of (93.5+/-0.7)%, limited mainly by the source performance and in good agreement with off-chip measurements. This lays the foundation for more sophisticated quantum experiments in LNOI
Despite its ubiquity in quantum computation and quantum information, a universally applicable definition of quantum entanglement remains elusive. The challenge is further accentuated when entanglement is associated with other key themes, e.g., quantum interference and quantum statistics. Here, we introduce two novel motifs that characterize the interplay of entanglement and quantum statistics: an 'entanglement pointer' and a 'statistics-induced entanglement entropy'. The two provide a quantitative description of the statistics-induced entanglement: (i) they are finite only in the presence of quantum entanglement underlined by quantum statistics; (ii) their explicit form depends on the quantum statistics of the particles (e.g., fermions, bosons, anyons). We have experimentally implemented these ideas by employing an electronic Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer fed by two highly diluted electron beams in an integer quantum Hall platform. Performing measurements of auto-correlation and cross-correlation of current fluctuations of the scattered beams (following 'collisions'), we quantify the statistics-induced entanglement by experimentally accessing the entanglement pointer and the statis

Instruction-guided image-to-image (I2I) editors are increasingly used in consumer and professional visual workflows, where trustworthiness depends not only on prompt compliance but also on equitable preservation of identity-relevant attributes. We formalize two failure modes: Soft Erasure, where requested edits are weakly realized or silently suppressed, and Stereotype Replacement, where edits introduce unrequested, stereotype-consistent demographic attributes. Using a controlled benchmark of 5,040 edited portraits, we evaluate these failures across three recent open-weight editors with vision-language model scoring and human evaluation. Our results show that identity-preservation failures are pervasive and demographically uneven. In particular, 62--71% of outputs exhibit skin lightening, with Indian and Black source portraits affected at 72--75%, compared with 44% for White source portraits, indicating output-level drift toward lighter or more White-presenting appearances when identity constraints are underspecified. In a mitigation case study, prompt-level appearance constraints reduce race-change scores for non-White source portraits by up to 1.48 points, while leaving White sou
Let $G$ be a simple graph with degree diagonal matrix $D(G)$ and adjacency matrix $A(G)$. The signless Laplacian matrix of $G$ is defined as $Q(G)=D(G)+A(G)$. For a real number $α\in [0, 1]$, Nikiforov (2017) proposed the $A_α$-matrix of a graph $G$ as $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$. The $A_α$-spectral radius of $G$, denoted by $ρ_α(G)$, is the largest eigenvalue of $A_α(G)$, where $ρ_0(G)=ρ(G)$ is the spectral radius of $A(G)$ and $2ρ_{\frac{1}{2}}(G)=q(G)$ is the spectral radius of $Q(G)$. Sun and Das (2020) proved that for any non-isolated vertex $v$ of degree $d_v$, $ρ^2(G)-ρ^2(G-v) \leq 2 d_v-1$, which confirmed the conjecture originally posed by Guo, Wang, and Li (2019). Recently, Liu and Ning (2026) provided a short and self-contained proof of this inequality. In this paper, we establish the corresponding result for $ρ_α(G)$. As a corollary, for every $k\in [0,d_v+1]$, we have $$ ρ^2(G)- ρ^2(G-v) \leq 2d_v-1 +(k-2)\left(\frac{d_v}{ρ(G)}-1\right). $$ This inequality coincides with that of Sun and Das when $k=2$, and is strictly sharper than theirs whenever $k eq 2$ and $d_v eq ρ(G)$. We also give a short proof of the inequality $ρ_α(G)-ρ_α(G-v)\leq α+\frac{(1-α)^2d_v}{ρ_α(G)-αd_v}$
Let $l\ge 1$ be an integer. For any multiple index $\mathbf{s}=(s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_l)\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}^l$ with $s_l>1$, the multiple zeta value (MZV for short) is defined by \begin{align*} ζ(s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_l):=\sum_{1\leq k_1<k_2<\cdots<k_l} \frac{1}{k_1^{s_1}k_2^{s_2}\cdots k_l^{s_l}} \end{align*} and the multiple $t$-value is defined by \begin{align*} t(s_1,s_2,...,s_l):=\sum_{1\leq k_1<k_2<...<k_l} \frac{1}{(2k_1-1)^{s_1}(2k_2-1)^{s_2}...(2k_l-1)^{s_l}}, \end{align*} where if the index is empty, then we define the value $t(\emptyset):=1$. We denote by $\{a_1,\cdots,a_k\}^d$ the sequence formed by repeating the sequence $\{a_1,\cdots,a_k\}$ exactly $d$ times. Let $H(r,s)=ζ(\{2\}^r,3,\{2\}^s)$ and $T(r,s):=t(\{2\}^r,3,\{2\}^s)$. Zagier's formula for the multiple zeta values $H(r,s)$ was an important and key ingredient in the proof of Hoffman's conjecture. In this paper, with the help of the Lei-Yu-Hong expressions for $H(r,s)$ and $T(r,s)$ as well as Lupu's identity about rational zeta series involving Riemann zeta values $ζ(2n)$ and by establishing some identities about binomial coefficients and a result about Kronecker symbol and arithmetic functions, w
Serving long-context LLMs is challenging because request lengths and batch composition vary during token generation, causing the memory footprint to fluctuate significantly at runtime. Offloading KV caches to host memory limits effective memory usage, but existing static and predetermined offloading strategies cannot adapt to the rapidly shifting memory demands of long-context serving. This often leads to excessive CPU-to-GPU KV transfers that translate into latency spikes and frequent SLO violations. To address these challenges, we introduce OrbitFlow, a fine-grained and adaptive KV cache management system that meets latency SLOs in long-context LLM serving. OrbitFlow employs a lightweight ILP solver to decide which layers' KV caches to retain on the GPU for each request, within memory capacity constraints. It continuously refines KV placements based on runtime feedback when the active plan becomes suboptimal during token generation. Under heavy load, OrbitFlow invokes a fallback mechanism to temporarily defer in-flight requests with large memory footprints, preserving overall SLO attainment. Our experiments demonstrate that OrbitFlow improves SLO attainment for TPOT and TBT by up
Timely and robust influenza incidence forecasting is critical for public health decision-making. This paper presents MAESTRO (Multi-modal Adaptive Estimation for Temporal Respiratory Disease Outbreak), a novel, unified framework that synergistically integrates advanced spectro-temporal modeling with multi-modal data fusion, including surveillance, web search trends, and meteorological data. By adaptively weighting heterogeneous data sources and decomposing complex time series patterns, the model achieves robust and accurate forecasts. Evaluated on over 11 years of Hong Kong influenza data (excluding the COVID-19 period), MAESTRO demonstrates state-of-the-art performance, achieving a superior model fit with an R-square of 0.956. Extensive ablations confirm the significant contributions of its multi-modal and spectro-temporal components. The modular and reproducible pipeline is made publicly available to facilitate deployment and extension to other regions and pathogens, presenting a powerful tool for epidemiological forecasting.
In this paper, we establish a local smoothing estimate on two-dimensional quantum Euclidean space. This is the noncommutative analogue of the one due to Mockenhaupt$-$Seeger$-$Sogge \cite{MSS}. As an application and simultaneously one motivation, we obtain the noncommutative analogue of Bourgain's circular maximal theorem, resolving one problem after \cite{Hong}.
We propose L2T, an advancement of visual instruction tuning (VIT). While VIT equips Multimodal LLMs (MLLMs) with promising multimodal capabilities, the current design choices for VIT often result in overfitting and shortcut learning, potentially degrading performance. This gap arises from an overemphasis on instruction-following abilities, while neglecting the proactive understanding of visual information. Inspired by this, L2T adopts a simple yet effective approach by incorporating the loss function into both the instruction and response sequences. It seamlessly expands the training data, and regularizes the MLLMs from overly relying on language priors. Based on this merit, L2T achieves a significant relative improvement of up to 9% on comprehensive multimodal benchmarks, requiring no additional training data and incurring negligible computational overhead. Surprisingly, L2T attains exceptional fundamental visual capabilities, yielding up to an 18% improvement in captioning performance, while simultaneously alleviating hallucination in MLLMs. Github code: https://github.com/Feng-Hong/L2T.
Linear optical quantum computing (LOQC) provides a compelling approach to quantum information processing, with a short list of physical requirements; however, experimental implementations have faced significant challenges. Itinerant phonons in quantum acoustics, combined with superconducting qubits, offer a compelling alternative to the quantum optics approach. Here we demonstrate key advances in the ability to manipulate and measure acoustic phonon quantum states: First, we demonstrate deterministic phase control of itinerant one- and two-phonon qubit states, measured using an acoustic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We implement phonon phase control using the frequency-dependent scattering of phonon states from a superconducting transmon qubit. The acoustic interferometer used to measure the resulting phonon phase achieves a noise-floor-limited Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference visibility of 98.1%, representing a significant improvement over our previous demonstration. Additionally, we propose and implement a multi-phonon detection scheme that enables coherent conversion between itinerant one- and two-phonon Fock states and transmon qutrit states, transforming for example the Hong-O
Generative image models produce striking visuals yet often misrepresent culture. Prior work has examined cultural bias mainly in text-to-image (T2I) systems, leaving image-to-image (I2I) editors underexplored. We bridge this gap with a unified evaluation across six countries, an 8-category/36-subcategory schema, and era-aware prompts, auditing both T2I generation and I2I editing under a standardized protocol that yields comparable diagnostics. Using open models with fixed settings, we derive cross-country, cross-era, and cross-category evaluations. Our framework combines standard automatic metrics, a culture-aware retrieval-augmented VQA, and expert human judgments collected from native reviewers. To enable reproducibility, we release the complete image corpus, prompts, and configurations. Our study reveals three findings: (1) under country-agnostic prompts, models default to Global-North, modern-leaning depictions that flatten cross-country distinctions; (2) iterative I2I editing erodes cultural fidelity even when conventional metrics remain flat or improve; and (3) I2I models apply superficial cues (palette shifts, generic props) rather than era-consistent, context-aware changes,
This paper establishes the convergence of boundary-layer solutions of the consumption type Keller-Segel model with non-degenerate initial data subject to physical boundary conditions, which is a sequel of \cite{Corrillo-Hong-Wang-vanishing} on the case of degenerate initial data. Specifically, we justify that the solution with positive chemical diffusion rate $\varepsilon>0 $ converges to the solution with zero diffusion $\varepsilon=0 $ (outer-layer solution) plus the boundary-layer profiles (inner-layer solution) for any time $t>0$ as $ \varepsilon \rightarrow 0 $. Compared to \cite{Corrillo-Hong-Wang-vanishing}, the main difficulty in the analysis is the lack of regularity of the outer- and boundary-layer profiles since only the zero-order compatibility conditions for the leading-order boundary-layer profiles can be fulfilled with non-degenerate initial data. Our new strategy is to regularize the boundary-layer profiles with carefully designed corner-corrector functions and approximate the low-regularity leading-order boundary-layer profiles by higher-regularity profiles with regularized boundary conditions. By using delicate weight functions involving boundary-layer profi
Reconstruction and rendering-based talking head synthesis methods achieve high-quality results with strong identity preservation but are limited by their dependence on identity-specific models. Each new identity requires training from scratch, incurring high computational costs and reduced scalability compared to generative model-based approaches. To overcome this limitation, we propose FIAG, a novel 3D speaking head synthesis framework that enables efficient identity-specific adaptation using only a few training footage. FIAG incorporates Global Gaussian Field, which supports the representation of multiple identities within a shared field, and Universal Motion Field, which captures the common motion dynamics across diverse identities. Benefiting from the shared facial structure information encoded in the Global Gaussian Field and the general motion priors learned in the motion field, our framework enables rapid adaptation from canonical identity representations to specific ones with minimal data. Extensive comparative and ablation experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches, validating both the effectiveness and generalizability of the
Despite Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) showing promising results on general zero-shot image classification tasks, fine-grained image classification remains challenging. It demands precise attention to subtle visual details to distinguish between visually similar subcategories--details that MLLMs may easily overlook without explicit guidance. To address this, we introduce AutoSEP, an iterative self-supervised prompt learning framework designed to enhance MLLM fine-grained classification capabilities in a fully unsupervised manner. Our core idea is to leverage unlabeled data to learn a description prompt that guides MLLMs in identifying crucial discriminative features within an image, and boosts classification accuracy. We developed an automatic self-enhancing prompt learning framework called AutoSEP to iteratively improve the description prompt using unlabeled data, based on instance-level classification scoring function. AutoSEP only requires black-box access to MLLMs, eliminating the need for any training or fine-tuning. We evaluate our approach on multiple fine-grained classification datasets. It consistently outperforms other unsupervised baselines, demonstrating the e
Traditional weak-lensing mass reconstruction techniques suffer from various artifacts, including noise amplification and the mass-sheet degeneracy. In Hong et al. (2021), we demonstrated that many of these pitfalls of traditional mass reconstruction can be mitigated using a deep learning approach based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). In this paper, we present our improvements and report on the detailed performance of our CNN algorithm applied to next-generation wide-field observations. Assuming the field of view ($3°.5 \times 3°.5$) and depth (27 mag at $5σ$) of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, we generated training datasets of mock shear catalogs with a source density of 33 arcmin$^{-2}$ from cosmological simulation ray-tracing data. We find that the current CNN method provides high-fidelity reconstructions consistent with the true convergence field, restoring both small and large-scale structures. In addition, the cluster detection utilizing our CNN reconstruction achieves $\sim75$% completeness down to $\sim 10^{14}M_{\odot}$. We anticipate that this CNN-based mass reconstruction will be a powerful tool in the Rubin era, enabling fast and robust wide-field mass reconstruc
