Osteoporosis is a chronic degenerative disease of bones in which the primary type of it affects generally women after postmenopause. According to the literature the panoramic indices are valuable morphometric and visual tools to detect the disorder in a n early and asymptomnatic stage. The goals of study were to evaluate the reproducibility of mandibular cortical and panoramic indices and to assess population-specific index parameters. Panoramic radiographs of 50 osteoporotic (age = 65,1 ? 5,9) and 36 control (age = 66,4 ? 7,1) women were evaluated for the cortical (MCI) and panoramic (PMI) indices by 2 experienced clinicians and 40 dental students with basic clinical experiences. Statistical analysis of data was preformed using SPSS software. the result of MCI and PMI indexes demonstrated high interobserver agreement between the two clinicians but in MCI data, recorded by the clinicians and students, showed statistically significant differences. On the other hand the mean and threshold values of the indices proved to be different from what we had expected from other surveys. Although the panoramic images are taken for specific dental indications that would improve the screening efficiency of osteoporosis when the clinician recognizes the signs of it on the radiographs.
The treatment of patients having a completely edentulous maxillary arch and lower anterior teeth present is frequent in the dental practice. In these cases some specific changes can be detected in the oral cavity and on orthopantomograms. These signs were summarized and described first by Kelly (1972). Aim of the study was to examine the presence of the specific signs of the combination syndrome among the patients between 2009 and 2014. With the help of the electronic patient registry system used by the University of Pécs, 319 patients were filtered who were diagnosed with anodontia code (K0000 International Classification of Diseases (ICD)) in the examined period. 220 patients' orthopantomograms were evaluated searching for specific symptoms of the combination syndrome. 34 patients had complete edentulous maxilla and anterior teeth in the mandible. 4 patients (11.7%) showed the main sign of the combination syndrome, i.e. the maxillary anterior bone loss. Hypertrophy of maxillary tuberosity (9 cases, 26.4%), extrusion of the lower anterior teeth (6 cases, 17.6%) and great resorption of the distal mandibular ridge (16 cases, 47%) was diagnosed on the X-rays. The clinical examination of three patients supported the radiological findings. The combination syndrome was detectable, but the incidence rate was lower in this population in comparison with the data available in dental scientific publications.
Stem cells are present in many tissues, such as dental pulp. Stem cells can be easily isolated from dental pulp because third molars are often removed from patients. Stem cells could be separated from the tissue derived heterogeneous cell population. There are two main methods to separate a cell type from the other ones: the fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) and the magnetic activated cell sorting (MACS). The aim of this study was to compare these methods' effect on cell surviving and population growth after sorting on dental pulp cells. The anti-STRO-1 antibody was used as primary antibody to specifically label stem cells. Two secondary antibodies were used: magnetic or fluorescent labelled. We sorted the cells by MACS or by FACS or by combination of both (MACS-FACS). Our results show that the effectivity of MACS and FACS sorting are comparable while of MACS-FACS was significantly higher (MACS 79.53 ± 5.78%, FACS 88.27 ± 3.70%, MACS-FACS 98.43 ± 0.67%). The cell surviving and the post-sorting population growth, on the contrary, are very different. The cell population is growing on first week after MACS but after FACS did not. Moreover, after MACS-FACS, on first week the cell number of population decreased. Taken together, our results suggest to use MACS instead of FACS, at least in case of sorting dental pulp stem cells with anti-STRO-1 antibody.
Branchiogen anomalies represent a heterogeneous group of developmental abnormalities, they arise from incomplete obliteration of branchial clefts and pouches during embriogenesis. Clinically they can present as a cyst, fistula or sinus. Second cleft lesions account for 95% of the branchial anomalies. Second branchial cleft cysts are usually located in the neck, along the anterior border of the stenocleidomastoid muscle, but they can be anywhere along the course of the second branchial fistula from the tonsillar fossa to the supraclavicular region. Their presence in the nasopharynx is extremely rare. Ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging is recommended for diagnosis. Definitive treatment is surgical excision, these lesions do not regress spontaneously and often result recurrent infections. A 7 month old infant applied to a pediatrician with gastrointestinal viral infection. During examination a cystic mass was discovered in the right lateral nasopharyngeal wall, the lesion extended to the oropharynx. Marsupialisation was performed via transoral approach. In case of cystic lesion in the lateral epipharynx, branchial cleft cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

The purpose of this in vitro investigation was to evaluate the reinforcing effect of different fibre-reinforced composite (FRC) posts and insertion techniques in premolar teeth when using minimal invasive post space preparation. Thirty two extracted and endodontically treated premolar teeth were used and divided into four groups (n = 8) depending on the post used (Group 1-4). 1: one single conventional post, 2: one main conventional and one collateral post, 3: one flexible post, 4: one main flexible and one collateral post. After cementation and core build-up the specimens were submitted to static fracture toughness test. Fracture thresholds and fracture patterns were recorded and evaluated. The multi-post techniques (group 2 and 4) showed statistically higher fracture resistance compared to group one. Regarding fracture patterns there was no statistically significant difference between the tested groups. The application of multiple posts seems to be beneficial regarding fracture resistance independent from the used FRC post. Fracture pattern was not influenced by the elasticity of the post.
Salivary gland hypofunction, which may occur in head and neck cancers following therapeutic irradiation or in Sjogren's syndrome, drastically impair the patient's quality of life. Conventional treatments do not provide a satisfactory solution to the problem, therefore it is becoming increasingly urgent to develop completely new management approaches in particular, the challenge of restoring the function of acini. Many biologically based interventions studied, thus "reprogramming" with gene therapy of survivor ducts or regeneration potential of progenitor cells in the salivary gland. Our research group has been working on several models, which have shown that by using appropriate media containing extracellular proteins (e.g. BME, basal membrane extract) can be achieved acinar differentiation. A significant proportion of in vitro models of salivary gland are submandibular of origin, which however is different from the development and function of parotid. Our research group aimed to model the potential treatment options for salivary gland hypofunction, the carrier or bioactive molecules directed differentiation, as well as the potential of gene therapy on rat parotid-derived cell line (Par-C10). In our experiments, we have studied the morphological changes of Par-C10 cells cultured on permeable polyester membrane, or in three-dimensional cultures, using varying concentrations of BME. In addition, we have tested the use of recombinant adenovirus vectors that could modify Par-C10 cells and make them useful in gene therapy models. Our data suggest that Par-C10 cell line is suitable for modelling parotid gland tissue organization and may also serve as a useful gene therapy model system.
Altogether 4606 volunteers (2923 vomen, 1683 men) participated in the representative national epidemiological study to screen the alterations of temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The characteristic clinical signs and subjective complaints according to TMJ were evaluated by medical history taking and physical examination. Regarding the orthodontic anomalies, the vertical abnormalities (deep bite and open bite) were specifically noted. Clinical signs showing functional problems of TMJ were found in 45.19% of the screened population, mainly in the group of 35-44 year olds. The frequency of clicking and crepitation of TMJ was significantly higher in women compared to men (p < 0.05). The highest rate of clinical signs of TMJ disorders was found in the South-Transdanubian region, the lowest rate in the Middle-Transdanubian region, between these regions it was a significant difference regarding the frequency of deviation/deflexion (p < 0.05). Of the vertical abnormalities, deep bite occured most frequently in the 35-44 ys old age group. The prevalence of deep bite was higher among males than females in the whole screened population, but the difference was not statistically significant. Significant relationship was detected between deep bite and TMJ pain, deep bite and noises in the joint in the majority of the population. The most frequent anomaly in the South-Transdanubian region was deep bite, while the open bite occured most frequently in south middle part of Hungary. Conclusion: the Hungarian population needs well organized specific programs to improve the oral health including TMJ and orthodontic aspects.
Due to its outstanding physical, mechanical and esthetic properties, zirconium-dioxide is one of the most popular non-metal denture, capable of surpassing PFM in most cases. The recent advances of CAD/CAM technology makes it a good alternitve. Here we show the usefulness of zirconium-dioxide in everyday dental practice through three case reports.
Orthodontic therapy, like any other medical intervention, in addition to its benefits carries the risk of potential complications and is associated with adverse effects-including periodontal problems, external root resorptions, pulpal changes, enamel damages (demineralization, discoloration, attrition), temporomandibular disorders, infective endocarditis, soft tissue damages, discomfort, pain and the risk of either aspiration or indigestion of medical instruments and appliances. Usually these effects are multifactorial in origin- most often a result of interactions between the patient, the dental practitioner and the technical aspects of the appliances or techniques. With preventive measurements and care, most of these complications can be either limited or completely avoided. Therefore, every dental practitioner must be fully aware of these effects and associated risk factors in order to maximize the treatment outcome. The present review aims to summarize these effects of orthodontic therapies, and provide a detailed description of factors and preventive measures, in order to minimize these damages.
In parallel with the emergence of new dental materials the number of allergic diseases is continuously increasing. Extremely small quantities of the allergens are capable to inducing an allergic reaction. Therefore it is particularly important to examine these materials as antigens and investigate their binding properties to proteins (e.g. formaldehyde, methacrylic acid, benzoyl-peroxide...). The Fourier Transform Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy (FT-SPR) is a suitable examination method for this type of procedure. FT-SPR measurement is performed at a fixed angel of incident light, and reflectivity is measured over a range of wavelength in the near infrared. The advantages of this method are the outstanding sensitivity, the label-free detection capability and the possibility of the real-time testing procedure. Formaldehyde and methacrylic acid are among the most common dental allergens. In our study we examined these molecules by FT-SPR spectroscopy. The aim of this work was to investigate the suitability of this method to the detection of these materials, with special focuses on the analysis and evaluation concentration-dependent measurements. Different concentrations (0.01 %-0.2%) of formaldehyde and methacrylic acid solutions were measured. The individual spectra were measured for all of the solutions, and calibration curves were calculated for the materials for the possibility of the determination of an unknown concentration. The results confirmed that the method is theoretically capable to detect hundred-thousandths scale concentration-changes in the solution flowing above the SPR-chip. The concentration-dependent studies had proved that the method capable to measure directly these materials and can provide appropriate calibration for quantitative determination. These experiments show the broad applicability of the FT-SPR method, which can greatly facilitate the mapping and understanding of biomolecular interactions in the future.
3D cephalometry is often the only way to set up accurate diagnosis and treatment plan in the field of reconstructive surgery. In these cases complement exposures are needed beyond common cephalograms with higher accuracy than conventional Cone-Beam CT. Consequently the aim of our study was to perform a complex 3D cephalometry. As the first step of this approach, was the 3D adaptation of DiPaolo's Quadrilateral technique, and to determine norms of references in lower face by means of CBCT. Thirty non-orthodontic CBCT scans were selected for the digitalization. The most important inclusion criteria was Class I occlusion. Locations of 55 landmarks were signed three times by three observers by means of Cranio Viewer software. However Quadrilateral analysis contains only millimetric values we also integrate angles in the 3D version to determine the width of maxilla and mandible. In the 2D examination--where landmarks were projected to the middle plane. The SDs of the lengths were between 2,66 mm and 5,20 mm. The ratios of normodivergent lower face were significant different from the one by DiPaolo. In 3D adaptation there were no significant differences between the measurements of the two sides (p ≥ 0.05). We found mostly strong and significant correlations between each anatomical structure except of angles. Creation of 3D Quadrilateral cephalometry by means of strong correlation and norms of Class I occlusion provide a practical, reliable method to measure also the transversal asymmetry of lower face which is necessary part of 3D cephalometry.
The dimension of attached gingiva is a very important landmark in the periodontal health, and determine the function of the mucogingival unit, the progression of marginal inflammation and also affects aesthetic dentistry, orthodontics and implantology. The determination of gingival/periodontal biotype is important in dental/periodontal practice. Hence, the aim of this cross sectional clinical study was to assess the width and thickness of attached gingiva in young, periodontally healthy individuals and to provide anthropometric data in Hungary. 68 periodontally healthy (between the age of 14-28) individuals participated in the study. The thickness of the gingiva was determined using transgingival transparency of periodontal probe at each tooth in the maxillary and mandibular dental arch. Based on this non-invasive technique three biotype categories were determined i.e. thin > 1 mm, medium 1-2 mm and thick < 2 mm. The width of the gingiva was assessed by William's graduated probe measuring the distance between the gingival margin and mucogingival line the midline of each tooth. The data were statistically analyzed and compared according to gender, dental arch and group of teeth. The gingiva was found to be thinner in females than males. The thin biotype was significantly more common among females while in males the thick biotype was the dominant. The individual variations were common within dental arch and many times the biotype switched from tooth to tooth. The average width of the attached gingiva was wider in the maxilla than in the mandible and there was no statistically significant correlation between the biotype and the width of attached gingiva. Manifest gingival recession occurred just around teeth with thin biotype. In the present study, we concluded that gingival thickness and width varies with gender and dental arch location and the biotype had no effect on the width of attached gingiva.
A variety of bioactive materials have been investigated as substitute materials for diseased or damaged bone tissues in dentistry. The aim of this study was to prepare mesoporous silica containing biomaterials by sol-gel technology. These materials may be combinated with hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate, as bioactive agents. The synthesis and testing of important physical parameters were performed. Based on these measurements, the silica aerogel can be an applicable material in the dental field in the future.

In dental implantation missing tooth or teeth are replaced by artificial root. To reduce the time required for the integration newest trends are the enhancement of bone formation around the implant by bioactive molecules, growth factors. Such a molecule is bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) accepted by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In these kind of applications effect of BMP-2 is tested in vitro on appropriate cell lines. One of these cell lines is the osteoblast like human embrionic palatal mesenchymal cell line (HEPM). In our experiments the effect of BMP-2 homodimer treatment was investigated on the differentiation of HEPM cells to osteoblasts reflected by changes in morphology, and proliferation after a short, 3 days BMP-2 treatment. Results showed that after three days BMP-2 treatment facilitates cell attachment on a concentration dependent manner however changes in cell morphology and proliferation could not be observed. Continuing the BMP-2 treatment inhibitory effect was measured in cell proliferation, which may refer to cell differentiation.
