Objective: Research on eye lens dosimetry for radiation workers has increased after the 2012 ICRP118 update on eye lens dose limits. However, corneal dosimetry remains underexplored due to historical focus and measurement challenges. This study uses a high-resolution digital eye phantom in Monte Carlo simulations to estimate corneal and lens doses for nuclear medicine staff, with and without lead glasses. Method: The Monte Carlo code GATE (version 9.0) based on GEANT4 (version 10.6) was used to estimate and compare doses in a digital eye phantom, accounting for primary and scattered radiation from common radionuclides (F18, I131, Tc99m) with varying lead glass shielding (0 to 0.75 mm). Results: Across all radionuclides, the dose to the cornea was consistently higher than the dose to the lens. Notably, the ratio of corneal to lens dose increased with thicker lead glasses, indicating a greater dose reduction to the lens compared to the cornea. Conclusion: The findings show that corneal doses from all studied radionuclides exceeded lens doses. Although increasing lead glass thickness reduced both, the reduction was more significant for the lens, raising the cornea-to-lens dose ratio.
In this paper, we present CornOrb, a publicly accessible multimodal dataset of Orbscan corneal topography images and clinical annotations collected from patients in Algeria. The dataset comprises 1,454 eyes from 744 patients, including 889 normal eyes and 565 keratoconus cases. For each eye, four corneal maps are provided (axial curvature, anterior elevation, posterior elevation, and pachymetry), together with structured tabular data including demographic information and key clinical parameters such as astigmatism, maximum keratometry (Kmax), central and thinnest pachymetry, and anterior/posterior asphericity. All data were retrospectively acquired, fully anonymized, and pre-processed into standardized PNG and CSV formats to ensure direct usability for artificial intelligence research. This dataset represents one of the first large-scale Orbscan-based resources from Africa, specifically built to enable robust AI-driven detection and analysis of keratoconus using multimodal data. The data are openly available at Zenodo.
Corneal reflection (glint) detection plays an important role in pupil-corneal reflection (P-CR) eye tracking, but in practice it is often handled as heuristics embedded within larger systems, making reproducibility difficult across hardware setups. We introduce a 2D geometry-driven, constellation-based pipeline for mulit-glint detection and matching, focusing on reproducibility and clear evaluation. Inspired by lost-in-space star identification, we treat glints as structured constellations rather than independent blobs. We propose a Similarity-Layout Alignment (SLA) procedure which adapts constellation matching to the specific constraints of multi-LED eye tracking. The framework brings together controlled over-detection, adaptive candidate fallback, appearance-aware scoring, and optional semantic layout priors while keeping detection and correspondence explicitly separated. Evaluated on a public multi-LED dataset, the system provides stable identity-preserving correspondence under noisy conditions. We release code, presets, and evaluation scripts to enable transparent replication, comparison, and dataset annotation.
Tear film rupture on the corneal surface plays a critical role in ocular health and visual comfort. Conventional theoretical approaches often idealize the cornea as a perfectly smooth surface, ignoring the surface roughness that are characteristic of healthy as well as diseased eyes. In this study, we develop a comprehensive mathematical model to investigate tear film dynamics over the corneal surface incorporating the effects of surface roughness, slip, van der Waals forces, and lipid transport at the film-air interface. The corneal surface is represented by a small-amplitude periodic modulation. Steady-state solutions obtained using asymptotics reveal nonlinear corrections to the base profile at $O(η^2)$, which are confirmed numerically. Linear stability analysis performed using the Floquet theory demonstrates that an increase in the amplitude of roughness destabilizes the film. Specifically, both the dominant growth rate and the most unstable wavenumber increase with the roughness amplitude. Nonlinear simulations show that surface roughness significantly accelerates tear-film rupture. The slip coefficient, amplitude of roughness of the corneal surface and the initial film profil
The randomness and uniqueness of human eye patterns is a major breakthrough in the search for quicker, easier and highly reliable forms of automatic human identification. It is being used extensively in security solutions. This includes access control to physical facilities, security systems and information databases, Suspect tracking, surveillance and intrusion detection and by various Intelligence agencies through out the world. We use the advantage of human eye uniqueness to identify people and approve its validity as a biometric. . Eye detection involves first extracting the eye from a digital face image, and then encoding the unique patterns of the eye in such a way that they can be compared with pre-registered eye patterns. The eye detection system consists of an automatic segmentation system that is based on the wavelet transform, and then the Wavelet analysis is used as a pre-processor for a back propagation neural network with conjugate gradient learning. The inputs to the neural network are the wavelet maxima neighborhood coefficients of face images at a particular scale. The output of the neural network is the classification of the input into an eye or non-eye region. An
The fourth industrial revolution promotes the integration of Information Technology (IT) and strategic resources. New IT demands and uses have been leading to changes in business processes and corporate governance. Lately, the financial industry has adopted a new integrated banking model known as Open Banking (OB) and the advent of cryptocurrencies has led to the Digital Economy (DE) materialization. Considering these facts, this paper expects to point out through literature review some IT enabling factors that allow the conception of a new industry design (or governance) specifically in the financial industry illustrated by the cases of the Open Banking and Digital Economy. This paper is structured mostly on literature review, accompanied by results, discussions, and finally, conclusions are presented. It was found five potential enabling factors. Keywords: Digital Economy, Information Technology (IT), Open Banking.
We employ a comprehensive data set and a variety of methods to provide evidence on the magnitude of large banks' funding advantage in Canada in addition to the extent to which market discipline exists across different securities issued by the Canadian banks. The banking sector in Canada provides a unique setting in which to examine market discipline along with the prospects of proposed reforms because Canada has no history of government bailouts, and an implicit government guarantee has been in effect consistently since the 1920s. We find that large banks have a funding advantage over small banks after controlling for bank-specific and market risk factors. Large banks on average pay 80 basis points and 70 basis points less, respectively, on their deposits and subordinated debt. Working with hand-collected market data on debt issues by large banks, we also find that market discipline exists for subordinated debt and not for senior debt.
Eye-tracking datasets are often shared in the format used by their creators for their original analyses, usually resulting in the exclusion of data considered irrelevant to the primary purpose. In order to increase re-usability of existing eye-tracking datasets for more diverse and initially not considered use cases, this work advocates a new approach of sharing eye-tracking data. Instead of publishing filtered and pre-processed datasets, the eye-tracking data at all pre-processing stages should be published together with data quality reports. In order to transparently report data quality and enable cross-dataset comparisons, we develop data quality reporting standards and metrics that can be automatically applied to a dataset, and integrate them into the open-source Python package pymovements (https://github.com/aeye-lab/pymovements).
Objective: The mechanical properties of corneal tissues play a crucial role in determining corneal shape and have significant implications in vision care. This study aimed to address the challenge of obtaining accurate in vivo data for the human cornea. Methods: We have developed a high-frequency optical coherence elastography (OCE) technique using shear-like antisymmetric (A0)-mode Lamb waves at frequencies above 10 kHz. Results: By incorporating an anisotropic, nonlinear constitutive model and utilizing the acoustoelastic theory, we gained quantitative insights into the influence of corneal tension on wave speeds and elastic moduli. Our study revealed significant spatial variations in the shear modulus of the corneal stroma on healthy subjects for the first time. The central cornea exhibited a shear modulus of 74 kPa, while the corneal periphery showed a decrease to 41 kPa. The limbus demonstrated an increased shear modulus exceeding 100 kPa. We obtained wave displacement profiles that are consistent with highly anisotropic corneal tissues. Conclusion: Our approach enabled precise measurement of corneal tissue elastic moduli in situ with high precision (< 7%) and high spatial
When the cornea becomes hydrated above its physiologic level it begins to significantly scatter light, loosing transparency and thus impairing eyesight. This condition, known as corneal edema, can be associated with different causes, such as corneal scarring, corneal infection, corneal inflammation, and others, making it difficult to diagnose and quantify. Previous works have shown that Second Harmonic Generation Microscopy (SHG) represents a valuable non-linear optical imaging tool to non-invasively identify and monitor changes in the collagen architecture of the cornea, potentially playing a pivotal role in future in-vivo cornea diagnostic methods. However, the interpretation of SHG data can pose significant problems when transferring such approaches to clinical settings, given the low availability of public data sets, and training resources. In this work we explore the use of three Deep Learning models, the highly popular InceptionV3 and ResNet50, alongside FLIMBA, a custom developed architecture, requiring no pre-training, to automatically detect corneal edema in SHG images of porcine cornea. We discuss and evaluate data augmentation strategies tuned to the specifics of the her
Reproducibility in eye-tracking research is increasingly important as researchers conduct diverse experiments and seek to validate or replicate findings. However, exact replication remains challenging due to differences in laboratory practices and experimental setups. Inconsistent stimulus presentation can yield divergent metrics from identical oculomotor behavior, yet the stimulus layer remains largely unstandardized. Existing tools often require programming expertise or depend on specific hardware vendors. We introduce VIVA Stimuli, a web-based platform for standardized eye-tracking stimulus presentation. It provides configurable task types, including fixation, smooth pursuit, cognitive load, blink, slippage, content display, and questionnaires within a unified environment. The platform supports any eye-tracking technology, including wearable and screen-based VOG trackers, LFI sensors, and EOG devices. ArUco markers enable synchronization for trackers with scene cameras, while a WebSocket architecture ensures temporal synchronization for those without. A visual experiment flow editor allows protocols to be exported and shared, enabling identical stimulus replication across labora
Models of the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model for the air puff test were analysed. Using Abaqus, the air puff test is applied to eyes with varying biomechanical parameters, such as material properties, corneal thickness, and radius. A reduced order model of the air puff (a turbulent impinging jet) has been acquired to decrease simulation time from 48 hours for the FSI model to approximately 12 minutes for the finite element analysis (FEA) model alone. To further accelerate simulations and improve model accuracy, Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) will be integrated with the reduced-order model. This hybrid approach will help expand the model to a larger dataset, enhancing intraocular pressure (IOP) estimation accuracy and the corneal material properties algorithm through inverse FEA. Additionally, a neural network (NN) framework with embedded Gaussian-modulated waveforms is proposed to model the pressure and deformation distributions on the corneal surface as functions of spatial and temporal parameters. By learning the relationship between corneal biomechanical inputs such as Corneal Central Thickness (CCT), Intraocular Pressure (IOP), and baseline properties (Mu), a
In this Chapter we show that by considering eye movements, and in particular, the resulting sequence of gaze shifts, a stochastic process, a wide variety of tools become available for analyses and modelling beyond conventional statistical methods. Such tools encompass random walk analyses and more complex techniques borrowed from the pattern recognition and machine learning fields. After a brief, though critical, probabilistic tour of current computational models of eye movements and visual attention, we lay down the basis for gaze shift pattern analysis. To this end, the concepts of Markov Processes, the Wiener process and related random walks within the Gaussian framework of the Central Limit Theorem will be introduced. Then, we will deliberately violate fundamental assumptions of the Central Limit Theorem to elicit a larger perspective, rooted in statistical physics, for analysing and modelling eye movements in terms of anomalous, non-Gaussian, random walks and modern foraging theory. Eventually, by resorting to machine learning techniques, we discuss how the analyses of movement patterns can develop into the inference of hidden patterns of the mind: inferring the observer's tas
The inception of AI-based fraud detection systems has presented the banking sector across the globe the opportunity to enhance fraud prevention mechanisms. However, the extent of adoption in Nigeria has been slow, fragmented, and inconsistent due to high cost of implementation and lack of technical expertise. This study seeks to investigate extent of adoption and determinants of AI-driven fraud detection systems in Nigerian banks. This study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design. Data were extracted from primary sources through structured questionnaire based on 5-point Likert scale. The population of the study consist of 24 licensed banks in Nigeria. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 5 biggest banks based on market capitalization and customer base. The Ordered Logistic Regression (OLR) model was used to estimate the data. The results showed that top management support, IT infrastructure, regulatory compliance, staff competency and perceived effectiveness accelerate the uptake of AI-driven fraud detection systems adoption. However, high implementation cost discourages it. Therefore, the study recommended that banks should invest in modern and scalable IT s
A single digital newsletter usually contains many messages (regions). Users' reading time spent on, and read level (skip/skim/read-in-detail) of each message is important for platforms to understand their users' interests, personalize their contents, and make recommendations. Based on accurate but expensive-to-collect eyetracker-recorded data, we built models that predict per-region reading time based on easy-to-collect Javascript browser tracking data. With eye-tracking, we collected 200k ground-truth datapoints on participants reading news on browsers. Then we trained machine learning and deep learning models to predict message-level reading time based on user interactions like mouse position, scrolling, and clicking. We reached 27\% percentage error in reading time estimation with a two-tower neural network based on user interactions only, against the eye-tracking ground truth data, while the heuristic baselines have around 46\% percentage error. We also discovered the benefits of replacing per-session models with per-timestamp models, and adding user pattern features. We concluded with suggestions on developing message-level reading estimation techniques based on available data
We present a deep learning method for accurately localizing the center of a single corneal reflection (CR) in an eye image. Unlike previous approaches, we use a convolutional neural network (CNN) that was trained solely using simulated data. Using only simulated data has the benefit of completely sidestepping the time-consuming process of manual annotation that is required for supervised training on real eye images. To systematically evaluate the accuracy of our method, we first tested it on images with simulated CRs placed on different backgrounds and embedded in varying levels of noise. Second, we tested the method on high-quality videos captured from real eyes. Our method outperformed state-of-the-art algorithmic methods on real eye images with a 35% reduction in terms of spatial precision, and performed on par with state-of-the-art on simulated images in terms of spatial accuracy. We conclude that our method provides a precise method for CR center localization and provides a solution to the data availability problem which is one of the important common roadblocks in the development of deep learning models for gaze estimation. Due to the superior CR center localization and ease o
Event-based eye tracking has shown great promise with the high temporal resolution and low redundancy provided by the event camera. However, the diversity and abruptness of eye movement patterns, including blinking, fixating, saccades, and smooth pursuit, pose significant challenges for eye localization. To achieve a stable event-based eye-tracking system, this paper proposes a bidirectional long-term sequence modeling and time-varying state selection mechanism to fully utilize contextual temporal information in response to the variability of eye movements. Specifically, the MambaPupil network is proposed, which consists of the multi-layer convolutional encoder to extract features from the event representations, a bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and a Linear Time-Varying State Space Module (LTV-SSM), to selectively capture contextual correlation from the forward and backward temporal relationship. Furthermore, the Bina-rep is utilized as a compact event representation, and the tailor-made data augmentation, called as Event-Cutout, is proposed to enhance the model's robustness by applying spatial random masking to the event image. The evaluation on the ThreeET-plus benchma
We present software to detect noise in eye position signals from video-based eye-tracking systems that depend on accurate pupil and corneal reflection position estimation. When such systems transiently fail to properly detect the pupil or the corneal reflection due to occlusion from eyelids, eye lashes or various shadows, the estimated gaze position is false. This produces an artifactual signal in the position trace that is rapidly, irregularly oscillating between true and false gaze positions. We refer to this noise as RIONEPS (Rapid Irregularly Oscillating Noise of the Eye Position Signal). Our method for detecting these periods automatically is based on an estimate of the relative inefficiency of the eye position signal. We look for RIONEPS in the horizontal and vertical traces separately, and although we typically use it offline, it is suitable to adaptation for real time use. This method requires a threshold to be set, and although we provide some guidance, thresholds will have to be estimated empirically.
Large vision-language models have achieved remarkable capabilities by training on massive internet-scale data, yet a fundamental asymmetry persists: while LLMs can leverage self-supervised pretraining on abundant text and image data, the same is not true for many behavioral modalities. Video-based behavioral data -- gestures, eye movements, social signals -- remains scarce, expensive to annotate, and privacy-sensitive. A promising alternative is simulation: replace real data collection with controlled synthetic generation to produce automatically labeled data at scale. We introduce infrastructure for this paradigm applied to eye movement, a behavioral signal with applications across vision-language modeling, virtual reality, robotics, accessibility systems, and cognitive science. We present a pipeline for generating synthetic labeled eye movement video by extracting real human iris trajectories from reference videos and replaying them on a 3D eye movement simulator via headless browser automation. Applying this to the task of script-reading detection during video interviews, we release final_dataset_v1: 144 sessions (72 reading, 72 conversation) totaling 12 hours of synthetic eye m
Purpose: Recently the authors presented a technique that allows corneal thickness measurements along any meridian from optical sections obtained using a rotary scanning system. This paper presents 3-D mapping of the corneal thickness and topography of both corneal surfaces, obtained with the rotary system. Method: Corneal thickness and topography are computed from optical sections obtained by illumination with a collimated beam expanded in a fan by a small cylindrical lens. This lens is provided with motor driven rotation in order to perform automated rotary scan of the whole cornea. Two cameras are used to capture the images of the optical sections. Results: With this system it is possible to obtain 3-D representation of the corneal thickness as well as corneal topography. Corneal thickness and elevation maps are shown. Conclusions: Although still under development, this new optical system allows the measurement of the thickness of the whole cornea as well as 3-D mapping of both corneal surfaces.
