During the hydraulically induced compaction of a granular layer fracture patterns arise. In numerical simulations we study how these patterns depend on the gas properties as well as on the properties of the porous medium. In particular the relation between the speed of fracture propagation and injection pressure is here studied in detail.
Macroeconomic data on the Spanish economy during the Second Republic is not accurate, the interpretation of historical events from the figures obtained is divergent and misleading. Hasty laws were enacted in attempts to resolve social problems arising mainly from deep economic inequalities, but they were often nothing more than declarations of good intentions. Spain suffered in the aftermath of the international economic downturn as it began to be felt at the end of the dictatorship of General Primo de Rivera. Economic policy was developed under the Constitution, but, despite the differences between the first and second biennium, there was a tendency to maintain the guidelines from the previous stage and in general, sometimes unfairly, it aimed at least to avoid the destabilization of the financial system. Nonetheless, it ultimately failed to achieve its goals, mainly because of the frequent changes of government mediated by a social crisis of greater significance that had relegated economic issues into the background.
The study of the spatial layout of Christian churches has been of great interest since late Antiquity and the beginning of the Early Middle Ages, and has received a new impetus in recent literature when it was recognized that the orientation of their main axes represents a key feature of their architecture. From the earliest Christian communities, the orientation of the church allowed the faithful to pray facing the east, towards the rising Sun. Several authors were careful to point this out in their writings; in particular, prior to the Council of Nicaea (325 AD), the Apostolic Constitutions indicated: "And let it be, first, the elongated building, with its head facing east". We present a detailed analysis of the spatial orientation of the historic churches located in the Jesuit towns of Chiquitania (Bolivia). We have measured in situ the main characteristics of eight churches currently standing and the ruins of a ninth construction. In all cases, we carry out a thorough survey of the landscape surrounding each church, trying to find some common pattern, possibly astronomical, that explains its orientations. To our list we also add the orientation measures of a tenth church based
Training large-scale deep learning models has become a key challenge for the scientific community and industry. While the massive use of GPUs can significantly speed up training times, this approach has a negative impact on efficiency. In this article, we present a detailed analysis of the times reported by MLPerf Training v4.1 on four workloads: BERT, Llama2 LoRA, RetinaNet, and Stable Diffusion, showing that there are configurations that optimise the relationship between performance, GPU usage, and efficiency. The results point to a break-even point that allows training times to be reduced while maximising efficiency.
Intrusion detection is a critical component of cybersecurity, responsible for identifying unauthorized access or anomalous behavior in computer networks. This paper presents a comprehensive study on intrusion detection in networks using classical machine learning algorithms applied to the multiclass version of the NSL-KDD dataset (Normal, DoS, Probe, R2L, and U2R classes). The characteristics of NSL-KDD are described in detail, including its variants and class distribution, and the data preprocessing process (cleaning, coding, and normalization) is documented. Four supervised classification models were implemented: Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and XGBoost, whose performance is evaluated using standard metrics (accuracy, recall, F1 score, confusion matrix, and area under the ROC curve). Experiments show that models based on tree sets (Random Forest and XGBoost) achieve the best performance, with accuracies approaching 99%, significantly outperforming logistic regression and individual decision trees. The ability of each model to detect each attack category is also analyzed, highlighting the challenges in identifying rare attacks (R2L and U2R). Finally, the impl
This brief study focuses on the application of autoencoders to improve the quality of low-amplitude signals, such as gravitational events. A pre-existing autoencoder was trained using cosmic event data, optimizing its architecture and parameters. The results show a significant increase in the signal-to-noise ratio of the processed signals, demonstrating the potential of autoencoders in the analysis of small signals with multiple sources of interference.

This article, written in Spanish, provides a comprehensive review of the Fargues-Fontaine curve, a cornerstone in $p$-adic Hodge theory, and its pivotal role in classifying $p$-adic Galois representations. We synthesize key developments surrounding this curve, emphasizing its connection between advanced concepts in arithmetic geometry and the practical theory of representations. We offer a detailed analysis of the Fontaine period rings ($B_{cris}, B_{st}, B_{dR}$), exploring their crucial algebraic and arithmetic properties and their contribution to the curve's construction and definition. Furthermore, we delve into the theory of admissible $p$-adic Galois representations, discussing how the curve, once defined, integrates with Harder-Narasimhan theory.
This study proposes a methodology using OpenAlex (OA) for tracking Open Access publications in the case of Argentina, a country where a self-archiving mandate has been in effect since 2013 ( Law 26.899, 2013). A sample of 167,240 papers by researchers from the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) was created and analyzed using statistical techniques. We estimate that OA is able to capture between 85-93% of authors for all disciplines, with the exception of Social Sciences and Humanities, where it only reaches an estimated 47%. The availability of papers in Open Access was calculated to be 41% for the period 1953-2021 and 46% when considering exclusively the post-law period (2014-2021). In both periods, gold Open Access made up the most common route. When comparing equal periods post and pre-law, we observed that the upward trend of gold Open Access was pre-existing to the legislation and the availability of closed articles in repositories increased by 5% to what is estimated based on existing trends. However, while the green route has had a positive evolution, it has been the publication in gold journals that has boosted access to Argentine production mo
The goal of this paper is to prove the categorical equivalence between the category of Hausdorff-Compact topological spaces and the category of Unital Commutative $C^*$-algebras. This equivalence can be interpreted as a way of rewriting the well known Gelfand-Naimark Theorem in a categorical language. We will present the basic concepts in the theory of Banach Algebras as a successful link between Analysis and Algebra. Likewise, we will show
Clustering algorithms or methods for GPS trajectories are in constant evolution due to the interest aroused in part of the scientific community. With the development of clustering algorithms considered traditional, improvements to these algorithms and even unique methods considered as "novelty" for science have emerged. This work aims to analyze the scientific production that exists around the topic "GPS trajectory clustering" by means of bibliometrics. Therefore, a total of 559 articles from the main collection of Scopus were analyzed, previously filtering the generated sample to discard any article that does not have a direct relationship with the topic to be analyzed. Con el desarrollo de los algoritmos de agrupamiento considerados tradicionales han surgido mejoras a estos algoritmos e incluso métodos únicos considerados como "n
This work sets out a testing and containment framework developed for reopening universities in Mexico following the lockdown due to COVID-19. We treat diagnostic testing as a resource allocation problem and develop a testing allocation mechanism and practical web application to assist educational institutions in making the most of limited testing resources. In addition to the technical results and tools, we also provide a reflection on our current experience of running a pilot of our framework within the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), a leading private university in Mexico, as well as on our broader experience bridging research with academic policy in the Mexican context.
This paper explores the practical approach to portfolio selection methods for investments. The study delves into portfolio theory, discussing concepts such as expected return, variance, asset correlation, and opportunity sets. It also presents the efficient frontier and its application in the Markowitz model, which employs mean-variance optimization techniques. An alternative approach based on the mean-semivariance model is introduced. This model accounts for the skewness and kurtosis of the asset return distribution, providing a more comprehensive view of risk and return. The study also addresses the practical implementation of these models, including the use of genetic algorithms to optimize portfolio selection. Additionally, transaction costs and integer constraints in portfolio optimization are considered, demonstrating the applicability of the Markowitz model.
The trajectories of test particles with spin orbiting a black hole depend on the geometry of space-time and the intrinsic physical characteristics of the test particles. In this work the motion of test particles with spin on the innermost stable circular orbit of a quantum improved rotating black hole is studied. A computational implementation is presented through the Mathematica program, which can calculate and graph the radius, angular momentum and energy as a function of the spin of the test particles and for various geometric parameters of the rotating black hole, as they are the spin $a$ and the mass $M$ of the rotating black hole and the quantum parameters $γ$ and $ω$. Additionally, the program calculates the maximum spin physically possible for the test particles. At the end, some results given by the program are discussed and it is shown that these are consistent with those previously reported, both for the classical black holes of Schwarzschild and Kerr and for the quantum improved ones.
The Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón (CEFCA) is carrying out from the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre (OAJ, Teruel, Spain) two large area multiband photometric sky surveys, J-PLUS and J-PAS, covering the entire optical spectrum using narrow and broad band filters. J-PAS and J-PLUS include coadded and individual frame images and dual and single catalogue data. To publish all of this data, the CEFCA catalogues portal has been implemented offering web user interface services, as well, as Virtual Observatory (VO) services. This contribution presents the effort and work done in the CEFCA Catalogues Portal to enhance data publication of these large surveys following FAIR principles to increase data value and maximize research efficiency. It presents how FAIR principles have been achieved and improved with the implementation and publishing of the CEFCA Catalogues Publishing Registry, the use of VO services, their validation and improving processes and the effort made to offer data to improve provenance information.
Muscle tissue drives nearly all movement in the animal kingdom, providing power, mobility, and dexterity. Technologies for measuring muscle tissue motion, such as sonomicrometry, fluoromicrometry, and ultrasound, have significantly advanced our understanding of biomechanics. Yet, the field lacks the ability to monitor muscle tissue motion for animal behavior outside the lab. Towards addressing this issue, we previously introduced magnetomicrometry, a method that uses magnetic beads to wirelessly monitor muscle tissue length changes, and we validated magnetomicrometry via tightly-controlled in situ testing. In this study we validate the accuracy of magnetomicrometry against fluoromicrometry during untethered running in an in vivo turkey model. We demonstrate real-time muscle tissue length tracking of the freely-moving turkeys executing various motor activities, including ramp ascent and descent, vertical ascent and descent, and free roaming movement. Given the demonstrated capacity of magnetomicrometry to track muscle movement in untethered animals, we feel that this technique will enable new scientific explorations and an improved understanding of muscle function. -- -- El tejido m
In this article we present the basis of Monoid Theory from a categorical point of view, emphasizing the analogies and differences with the theory of modules over commutative rings. This exposition examines the theory of orthogonal groups and their subgroups over fields of positive characteristic, which has recently been used as an important tool in the study of automorphic forms and Langlands functionality. We present the classification of orthogonal groups over a finite field using the theory of bilinear forms and quadratic forms in positive characteristic. Using the determinant and spinor norm when the characteristic of $F$ is odd and using the Dickson invariant when the characteristic of $F$ is even, we also look at special subgroups of the orthogonal group. -- -- Esta exposición examina la teoría de los grupos ortogonales y sus subgrupos sobre cuerpos de característica positiva, que recientemente se han utilizado como una herramienta importante en el estudio de las formas automórficas y la funcionalidad de Langlands.
