Two-dimensional (2D) materials often require specific substrate terminations for epitaxial stabilization, yet the search for suitable templates has largely focused on low-index metal surfaces, which may not provide the optimal conditions for the growth of new phases. Here, we show that crystal-facet engineering on curved Cu surfaces enables the stabilization, within a single preparation step, of two distinct 2D phosphorus phases with different electronic properties. Hexagonal blue phosphorene forms on Cu(111) terraces, whereas a previously unreported skewed-square phosphorus phase is stabilized on Cu(513) facets. By combining complementary microscopy and spectroscopy techniques with theoretical calculations, we determine the structural and electronic properties of this new phase, which displays semiconducting character, in contrast to the metallic behavior of blue phosphorene. The coexistence of these two competing phases gives rise to a metal-to-semiconducting transition of the 2D phosphorus layer over the substrate. Locally, the competition between the two phases gives rise to self-aligned nanoarrays of alternating metallic and semiconducting phosphorus terraces. These results es
Existing MT evaluation frameworks, including automatic metrics and human evaluation schemes such as Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM), are largely language-agnostic. However, they often fail to capture dialect- and culture-specific errors in diglossic languages (e.g., Arabic), where translation failures stem from mismatches in language variety, content coverage, and pragmatic appropriateness rather than surface form alone. We introduce LQM: Linguistically Motivated Multidimensional Quality Metrics for MT. LQM is a hierarchical error taxonomy for diagnosing MT errors through six linguistically grounded levels: sociolinguistics, pragmatics, semantics, morphosyntax, orthography, and graphetics (Figure 1). We construct a bidirectional parallel corpus of 3,850 sentences (550 per variety) spanning seven Arabic dialects (Egyptian, Emirati, Jordanian, Mauritanian, Moroccan, Palestinian, and Yemeni), derived from conversational, culturally rich content. We evaluate six LLMs in a zero-shot setting and conduct expert span-level human annotation using LQM, producing 6,113 labeled error spans across 3,495 unique erroneous sentences, along with severity-weighted quality scores. We complement
Accurate vehicle counting through video surveillance is crucial for efficient traffic management. However, achieving high counting accuracy while ensuring computational efficiency remains a challenge. To address this, we propose a fully automated, video-based vehicle counting framework designed to optimize both computational efficiency and counting accuracy. Our framework operates in two distinct phases: \textit{estimation} and \textit{prediction}. In the estimation phase, the optimal region of interest (ROI) is automatically determined using a novel combination of three models based on detection scores, tracking scores, and vehicle density. This adaptive approach ensures compatibility with any detection and tracking method, enhancing the framework's versatility. In the prediction phase, vehicle counting is efficiently performed within the estimated ROI. We evaluated our framework on benchmark datasets like UA-DETRAC, GRAM, CDnet 2014, and ATON. Results demonstrate exceptional accuracy, with most videos achieving 100\% accuracy, while also enhancing computational efficiency, making processing up to four times faster than full-frame processing. The framework outperforms existing tec
Arabic is a highly diglossic language where most daily communication occurs in regional dialects rather than Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Despite this, machine translation (MT) systems often generalize poorly to dialectal input, limiting their utility for millions of speakers. We introduce Alexandria, a large-scale, community-driven, human-translated dataset designed to bridge this gap. Alexandria covers 13 Arab countries and 11 high-impact domains, including health, education, and agriculture. Unlike previous resources, Alexandria provides unprecedented granularity by associating contributions with city-of-origin metadata, capturing authentic local varieties beyond coarse regional labels. The dataset consists of parallel English-Dialectal Arabic multi-turn conversational scenarios annotated with speaker-addressee gender configurations, enabling the study of gender-conditioned variation in dialectal use. Comprising 107K total turns, Alexandria serves as both a training resource and as a rigorous benchmark for evaluating MT and Large Language Models (LLMs). Our automatic and human evaluation benchmarks the current capabilities of Arabic-aware LLMs in translating across diverse Arab
The critical need for sophisticated detection techniques has been highlighted by the rising frequency and intensity of wildfires in the US, especially in California. In 2023, wildfires caused 130 deaths nationwide, the highest since 1990. In January 2025, Los Angeles wildfires which included the Palisades and Eaton fires burnt approximately 40,000 acres and 12,000 buildings, and caused loss of human lives. The devastation underscores the urgent need for effective detection and prevention strategies. Deep learning models, such as Vision Transformers (ViTs), can enhance early detection by processing complex image data with high accuracy. However, wildfire detection faces challenges, including the availability of high-quality, real-time data. Wildfires often occur in remote areas with limited sensor coverage, and environmental factors like smoke and cloud cover can hinder detection. Additionally, training deep learning models is computationally expensive, and issues like false positives/negatives and scaling remain concerns. Integrating detection systems with real-time alert mechanisms also poses difficulties. In this work, we used the wildfire dataset consisting of 10.74 GB high-reso
The landscape of two-dimensional photonics has been dominated by van der Waals (vdW) materials. Expanding this library to include non-vdW layered systems promises enhanced environmental robustness and access to novel functionalities, such as strong ionic conductivity, yet their exfoliation remains challenging. Here, we establish Na2Zn2TeO6 (NZTO), a P2-type superionic conductor, as an exfoliable non-vdW optical material. We demonstrate that the highly disordered, mobile Na+ interlayer inherently facilitates mechanical cleavage down to few-nanometer thicknesses (about 4 nm). Optical interrogation via spectroscopic ellipsometry reveals NZTO as a wide-bandgap dielectric with pronounced optical birefringence (Delta_n about 0.25) across the visible and near-infrared spectrum. The lattice dynamics, probed by temperature-resolved Raman spectroscopy, underscore the rigidity of the [Zn2TeO6]2- framework, which remains largely decoupled from the high ionic mobility. These results identify NZTO as a compelling platform for robust, anisotropic dielectric photonics, simultaneously opening a pathway toward the convergence of ionic transport and optical control - an emerging paradigm we term iono
Interest in the concept of AI-driven harmful manipulation is growing, yet current approaches to evaluating it are limited. This paper introduces a framework for evaluating harmful AI manipulation via context-specific human-AI interaction studies. We illustrate the utility of this framework by assessing an AI model with 10,101 participants spanning interactions in three AI use domains (public policy, finance, and health) and three locales (US, UK, and India). Overall, we find that that the tested model can produce manipulative behaviours when prompted to do so and, in experimental settings, is able to induce belief and behaviour changes in study participants. We further find that context matters: AI manipulation differs between domains, suggesting that it needs to be evaluated in the high-stakes context(s) in which an AI system is likely to be used. We also identify significant differences across our tested geographies, suggesting that AI manipulation results from one geographic region may not generalise to others. Finally, we find that the frequency of manipulative behaviours (propensity) of an AI model is not consistently predictive of the likelihood of manipulative success (effic
Over 8,024 wildfire incidents have been documented in 2024 alone, affecting thousands of fatalities and significant damage to infrastructure and ecosystems. Wildfires in the United States have inflicted devastating losses. Wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense, which highlights how urgently efficient warning systems are needed to avoid disastrous outcomes. The goal of this study is to enhance the accuracy of wildfire detection by using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) built on the VGG16 architecture. The D-FIRE dataset, which includes several kinds of wildfire and non-wildfire images, was employed in the study. Low-resolution images, dataset imbalance, and the necessity for real-time applicability are some of the main challenges. These problems were resolved by enriching the dataset using data augmentation techniques and optimizing the VGG16 model for binary classification. The model produced a low false negative rate, which is essential for reducing unexplored fires, despite dataset boundaries. In order to help authorities execute fast responses, this work shows that deep learning models such as VGG16 can offer a reliable, automated approach for early wildfire recogni
We analyze how climate change affects marine oxygen production by modeling plankton--oxygen dynamics with a fractional-order nonlinear system and establishing rigorous conditions for the model's well-posedness. We formulate a three-dimensional system $d^αx(t)/dt^α= A x(t) + f(x(t))$, where $A$ is a diagonal $3\times 3$ matrix and $f$ is nonlinear. We (i) rigorously state the model, (ii) derive a Lipschitz constant for $f$ under suitable assumptions, and (iii) prove existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on initial data using a fractional formula with a probability density kernel and a generalized Gr"onwall inequality. Under the stated conditions, $f$ satisfies a computable Lipschitz bound that yields existence and uniqueness of solutions for the fractional system, and the solutions depend continuously on initial conditions, establishing the well-posedness of the plankton--oxygen model. We introduce a fractional, PDF-kernel--based framework for plankton--oxygen dynamics and provide general proofs of well-posedness via a generalized Gr"onwall approach, capturing memory effects that classical integer-order models miss. These results justify numerical simulations and sensitiv
Sarcopenia is a progressive loss of muscle mass and function linked to poor surgical outcomes such as prolonged hospital stays, impaired mobility, and increased mortality. Although it can be assessed through cross-sectional imaging by measuring skeletal muscle area (SMA), the process is time-consuming and adds to clinical workloads, limiting timely detection and management; however, this process could become more efficient and scalable with the assistance of artificial intelligence applications. This paper presents high-quality three-dimensional cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) images of patients with sarcopenia collected at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Expert clinicians manually annotated the SMA at the third lumbar vertebra, generating precise segmentation masks. We develop deep-learning models to measure SMA in CT images and automate this task. Our methodology employed transfer learning and self-supervised learning approaches using labelled and unlabeled CT scan datasets. While we developed qualitative assessment models for detecting sarcopenia, we observed that the quantitative assessment of SMA is more precise and informativ
Multimode cavity optomechanical systems allow light to couple otherwise non-interacting mechanical resonators, enabling non-Hermitian phenomena such as exceptional points, where eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors of coupled modes coalesce. Accessing an exceptional point and its nearby parameter space is a first step towards chiral mode dynamics and topological state transfer. Diamond optomechanical devices support strong coherent optomechanical coupling required to tune resonances to an exceptional point, as well as strain-coupling to spin-defects for hybrid quantum technologies, but have not yet been used for multimode non-Hermitian physics. Here we tune to an exceptional point in a diamond optomechanical crystal, which uses structural symmetry breaking to produce two high-frequency mechanical resonances coupled to an optical cavity. The exceptional point is reached within a stable operating window below the phonon-lasing threshold, and we observe asymmetric redistribution of optomechanical damping and anti-damping between hybridized modes. These results establish diamond optomechanical crystals as a platform for non-Hermitian optomechanics, opening routes to topological mechanical
The driving environment perception has a vital role for autonomous driving and nowadays has been actively explored for its realization. The research community and relevant stakeholders necessitate the development of Deep Learning (DL) models and AI-enabled solutions to enhance autonomous vehicles (AVs) for smart mobility. There is a need to develop a model that accurately perceives multiple objects on the road and predicts the driver's perception to control the car's movements. This article proposes a novel utility-based analytical model that enables perception systems of AVs to understand the driving environment. The article consists of modules: acquiring a custom dataset having distinctive objects, i.e., motorcyclists, rickshaws, etc; a DL-based model (YOLOv8s) for object detection; and a module to measure the utility of perception service from the performance values of trained model instances. The perception model is validated based on the object detection task, and its process is benchmarked by state-of-the-art deep learning models' performance metrics from the nuScense dataset. The experimental results show three best-performing YOLOv8s instances based on mAP@0.5 values, i.e.,
Multivariate analysis (MVA) is employed to probe the dark matter candidate A$^{\prime}$, a gauge boson of a model rooted within Einstein-Cartan Theory, at the International Linear Collider (ILC). \texttt{WHIZARD} package is used as the event generator to simulate electron-positron interactions at the ILC, at a 500 GeV center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt s$) and a 500 fb$^{-1}$ detector's integrated luminosity ($\mathcal{L}$), to produce the A$^{\prime}$ signal and the expected standard model background. The study focuses on the muonic decay channel of A$^{\prime}$, utilizing several MVA classifiers such as Fisher, Deep Neural Network (DNN), and the Boosted Decision Tree (BDT), aiming to discriminate between the signal of several benchmark points, within theoretical and experimental limits, and the standard model background, and to explore their discovery potential at the ILC. Most benchmark points were proved discoverable at the ILC within $\mathcal{L}= 500$ fb$^{-1}$.
Single-crystal diamond nanocavities have tremendous potential for use in quantum and nonlinear optical technologies. The ability to precisely control their resonant frequencies is essential for many applications, and $\textit{in situ}$ tuning is particularly desirable. In this work, we demonstrate deterministic resonance tuning of a diamond nanocavity. We observed a photorefractive effect in concert with the generation of third-harmonic light within the device. This effect blue-shifted the cavity resonance frequency by $20.2\,(2)\,\text{GHz}$, exceeding the cavity linewidth. The shift corresponded to a fractional change in refractive index of $-1.05\,(1)\times10^{-4}$, and its relaxation occurred over several tens of hours. Although photorefraction is a second-order nonlinear effect and has previously not been observed in diamond owing to its vanishing $χ^{(2)}$, the observed behaviour is consistent with the generation of non-zero $χ^{(2)}$ by electric fields from charged crystal defects. In addition to allowing tuning of diamond cavities for resonant nonlinear and quantum photonics applications, this observation could enable the realisation of diamond frequency converters and elec
Carbon nanotube (CNT) films are widely considered as prospective building blocks for advanced electronic and nanostructured materials. In particular, electrical transport in high-density CNT films results from a complex interplay between network morphology and CNT connectivity, which remains challenging to characterize quantitatively. To identify the structural parameters that govern the electrical current in CNT films, we employed coarse-grained molecular dynamics to construct dense mesoscale CNT film models that include CNTs with different chiralities and lengths. The effects of CNT geometrical features on the film morphologies were quantified by devising a set of structural descriptors and analyzing their mutual correlations. The impact of varying the concentration of amorphous carbon (aC) inclusions on the film structure was assessed. Finally, we employed a nodal analysis framework to compute the electrical current across the networks and correlate the charge transport characteristics to the underlying structural descriptors. The current is found to be enhanced in films that exhibit high curvature and buckling, low bundling, and strong connectivity. We discuss how the presence
