Hilary Putnam's biography and philosophical development reflect the history of Anglo-Saxon philosophy over the last 40 years. Putnam has influenced this history significantly for almost as long. In this introduction, the main aim is to present the context in which Putnam stands and from which his philosophical contributions can be understood. In the context of a sketch of Putnam's philosophical development, a preliminary historical classification of his work will also be attempted, even if this is not the place for a comprehensive critique or presentation: The introduction must remain at a fairly elementary level and of course cannot replace a reading of the texts. Since Putnam's work is certainly part of a rapprochement between 'analytic' and 'continental' philosophy, the introduction to the texts translated here should finally make clear what Putnam has to offer non-analytically oriented readers.

In this paper, we describe families of those bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space that are simultaneously unitarily equivalent to integral operators on $L_2(R)$ with bounded and arbitrarily smooth Carleman kernels. The main result is a qualitative sharpening of an earlier result of [7].
Cost estimation is a very crucial field for software developing companies. In the context of learning organizations, estimation applicability and accuracy are not the only acceptance criteria. The contribution of an estimation technique to the understanding and maturing of related organizational processes (such as identification of cost and productivity factors, measurement, data validation, model validation, model maintenance) has recently been gaining increasing importance. Yet, most of the proposed cost modeling approaches provide software engineers with hardly any assistance in supporting related processes. Insufficient support is provided for validating created cost models (including underlying data collection processes) or, if valid models are obtained, for applying them to achieve an organization's objectives such as improved productivity or reduced schedule. This paper presents an enhancement of the CoBRA(R) cost modeling method by systematically including additional quantitative methods into iterative analysis-feedback cycles. Applied at Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd., Japan, the CoBRA(R) method contributed to the achievement of the following objectives, including: (1) ma
Knots parametrized in cylinder coordinates by t -> (st, 3 + cos(nt), cos(mt + φ)) share properties of Lissajous and billiard knots in a cylinder. We use these 'billiard knots in a flat solid torus' to study two topics: when is Z(s,n,m) equal to Z(s,m,n)? And: why are the determinants of certain Lissajous and billiard knots in a cylinder equal?
Aim of this paper is to present a brief and basic introduction to polarized beams and the behaviour of a particle's spin in an electromagnetic field. It is not intended to give a complete presentation of the spin dynamic theory. Instead the most importa nt features are given without proof and details not absolutely necessary are left out. Spin depolarizing mechanisms are discussed and the cures against depolarizing especially during acceleration as utilized at COSY are outlined. A list of references is given at the end to help the reader to find more deep details on spin dynamic theory [1].
SPEED2 is a generator based on Marx technology and was designed in the University of Dusseldorf. SPEED2 consists on 40 +/- Marx modules connected in parallel (4.1 mF equivalent Marx generator capacity, 300 kV, 4 MA in short circuit, 187 kJ, 400 ns rise time, dI/dt~1013 A/s). Currently the SPEED2 is operating at the Comision Chilena de Energia Nuclear, CCHEN, Chile, being the most powerful and energetic device for dense transient plasma in the Southern Hemisphere. Most of the previous works developed in SPEED2 at Dusseldorf were done in a plasma focus configuration for soft X-ray emission and the neutron emission from SPEED2 was not completely studied. The research program at CCHEN considers experiments in different pinch configurations (plasma focus, gas puffed plasma focus, gas embedded Z-pinch, wire arrays) at current of hundred of kiloamperes to mega-amperes, using the SPEED2 generator. The Chilean operation has begun implementing and developing diagnostics in a conventional plasma focus configuration operating in deuterium in order to characterize the neutron emission and the hard X-ray production. In this work, we study topological properties of surface bundles, with an emphasis on surface bundles with a spin structure. We develop a criterion to decide whether a given manifold bundle has a spin structure and specialize it to surface bundles. We study examples of surface bundles, in particular sphere and torus bundles and surface bundles induced by actions of finite groups on Riemann surfaces. The examples are used to show that the obstruction cohomology class against the existence of a spin structure is nonzero. We develop a connection between the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for families of elliptic operators and the modern homotopy theory of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces due to Tillmann, Madsen and Weiss. This theory and the index theorem is applied to prove that the tautological classes of spin surface bundles satisfy certain divisibility relations. The result is that the divisibility improves, compared with the non-spin-case, by a certain power of 2. The explicit computations for sphere bundles are used in the proof of the divisibility result. In the last chapter, we use actions of certain finite groups to construct explicit torsion elements in the homotopy groups of
The increasing role of software for developing products and services requires that organizations align their software-related activities with high-level business goals. In practice, this alignment is very difficult and only little systematic support is available. GQM+Strategies is a method that aims at aligning organizational goals, strategies, and measurements at all levels of an organization in a seamless way. This article describes a case study of applying GQM+Strategies in a globally op- erating industrial R&D organization developing special-purpose device products for B2B customers. The study analyzes how GQM+Strategies has helped clarify and harmonize the goal set of the organization. Results of the study indicate improved alignment and integration of different goals. In addition, the method helped to make the initially informal goal-setting more transparent and consequently enabled revising it while new, more important goals were discovered and comprehended. Moreover, several elements affecting the achievement of goals as well as impediments were identified.
In this paper, we characterize all closed linear operators in a separable Hilbert space which are unitarily equivalent to an integral bi-Carleman operator in $L_2(R)$ with bounded and arbitrarily smooth kernel on $R^2$. In addition, we give an explicit construction of corresponding unitary operators. The main result is a qualitative sharpening of an earlier result of [5].
Traffic jams in urban scenarios are often caused by bottlenecks related to the street topology and road infrastructure, e.g. traffic lights and merging of lanes. Instead of addressing traffic flow optimization in a static way by extending the road capacity through constructing additional streets, upcoming smart cities will exploit the availability of modern communication technologies to dynamically change the mobility behavior of individual vehicles. The underlying overall goal is to minimize the total dwell time of the vehicles within the road network. In this paper, different bottleneck-aware methods for dynamic vehicle routing are compared in comprehensive simulations. As a realistic evaluation scenario, the inner city of Dusseldorf is modeled and the mobility behavior of the cars is represented based on real-world traffic flow data. The simulation results show, that the consideration of bottlenecks in a routing method decreased the average travel time by around 23%. Based on these results a new routing method is created which further reduces the average travel time by around 10%. The simulations further show, that the implementation of dynamic lanes in inner cities most of the
This work deals with relations between a bounded cohomological invariant and the geometry of Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. The invariant, obtained from the Kähler class, is used to define and characterize a special class of totally geodesic embeddings, called "tight embeddings". In addition, special isometric actions of finitely generated groups on Hermitian symmetric spaces are studied. Results of a joint work with M. Burger and A. Iozzi about surface group representations are also discussed.
In this paper, we characterize the families of those bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space which are simultaneously unitarily equivalent to integral bi-Carleman operators on $L_2(R)$ having arbitrarily smooth kernels of Mercer type. The main result is a qualitative sharpening of an earlier result of [7].
COSY with a maximum beam momentum of ~3.65 GeV/c allows the production of ground state (Lambda and Sigma) and excited hyperons (Lambda(1405), Sigma(1385) and Lambda(1520)) in elementary NN interactions. The existing data base in this field is rather poor. A systematic study of the hyperon production at COSY will result in an improvement of our understanding concerning topics like hyperon-nucleon interaction, kaon-nucleon interaction, nucleon resonances, strangeness production mechanism and structure of the Lambda(1405). Precise data on Lambda and Sigma production have been produced at the COSY-11 and TOF installation. With the WASA detector at COSY these studies can be continued and extended to channels including photons in the final state.
We study geodesically complete and locally compact Hadamard spaces X whose Tits boundary is a connected irreducible spherical building. We show that X is symmetric iff complete geodesics in X do not branch and a Euclidean building otherwise. Furthermore, every boundary equivalence (cone topology homeomorphism preserving the Tits metric) between two such spaces is induced by a homothety. As an application, we can extend the Mostow and Prasad rigidity theorems to compact singular (orbi)spaces of nonpositive curvature which are homotopy equivalent to a quotient of a symmetric space or Euclidean building by a cocompact group of isometries.
A sufficient level of data sovereignty is extremely difficult for consumers in practice. The EU General Data Protection Regulation guarantees comprehensive data subject rights, which must be implemented by responsible controllers through technical and organizational measures. Traditional approaches, such as the provision of lengthy data protection declarations or the downloading of raw personal data without further assistance, do not meet the requirements of informational self-determination. The new technical approaches outlined below, in particular AI-based transparency and access modalities, demonstrate the practicability of effective and versatile mechanisms. For this purpose, the relevant transparency information is extracted in a semi-automated way, represented in a machine-readable format, and then played out via diverse channels such as virtual assistants or the enrichment of search results. Tr
The present status of the theoretical description of Initial (ISI) and Final State Interactions (FSI) in nucleon induced exclusive meson production processes close to threshold is reviewed. Shortcomings are addressed and new perspectives given.
We consider operator-valued boundary value problems in $(0,2π)^n$ with periodic or, more generally, $ν$-periodic boundary conditions. Using the concept of discrete vector-valued Fourier multipliers, we give equivalent conditions for the unique solvability of the boundary value problem. As an application, we study vector-valued parabolic initial boundary value problems in cylindrical domains $(0,2π)^n\times V$ with $ν$-periodic boundary conditions in the cylindrical directions. We show that under suitable assumptions on the coefficients, we obtain maximal $L^q$-regularity for such problems.
We investigate self-dual vertex operator algebras (VOAs) and super algebras (SVOAs). Using the genus one correlation functions, it is shown that self-dual SVOAs exist only for half-integral central charges. It is described how self-dual SVOAs can be constructed from self-dual VOAs of larger central charge. The analogy with integral lattices and binary codes is emphasized. One main result is the construction of the shorter Moonshine module, a self-dual SVOA of central charge 23.5 on which the Baby monster - the second largest sporadic simple group - acts by automorphisms. The shorter Moonshine module has the character q^(-47/48)*(1+ 4371q^(3/2)+ 96256q^2+ 1143745q^(5/2) +...) and is the "shorter cousin" of the Moonshine module. Its lattice and code analog are the shorter Leech lattice and shorter Golay code. We conjecture that the shorter Moonshine module is the unique SVOA with this character. The final chapter introduces the notion of extremal VOAs and SVOAs. These are self-dual (S)VOAs with character having the same first few coefficients as the vacuum representation of the Virasoro algebra of the same central charge. We show that extremal VOAs exist at least for the central char
We show that every knot has a checkerbord diagram and that every knot is the closure of a rosette braid. We define Fourier knots of type (n_1, n_2, n_3) as knots which have parametrizations where each coordinate function x_i(t) is a finite Fourier series of length n_i, and conclude that every knot is a Fourier knot of type (1, 1, n) for some natural number n.
