In this work we introduce an innovative approach to single-molecule quantum coherence (SMQC)-based disposable micro-optical anti-counterfeiting labels. This method facilitates the editing and reading of anti-counterfeiting with single molecules used as the anti-counterfeiting information labels. The label is meticulously crafted through inkjet printing technology, while its authentication is achieved via frequency domain imaging. Through a validation process including experimental demonstration, numerical simulation, and neural network analysis, we demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, further validate the integrity of the miniature anti-counterfeiting information storage, and verify the signal extraction accuracy with the recognition accuracy of the labels is consistently above 99.995%. The combination of SMQC-based disposable micro-optical anti-counterfeiting technology is expected to enable more precise preparation of single-molecule-array chips, thus providing a crucial foundation for the advancement of high-tech and smart manufacturing industries.
Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and ultrasound imaging (USI) are important biomedical imaging techniques, due to their unique and complementary advantages in tissue's structure and function visualization. In this Letter, we proposed a coaxial photoacoustic-ultrasound dual-modal imaging system (coPAUS) with disposable opto-acoustic window. This opto-acoustic window allows part of light to go through it, and another part of light to be converted to ultrasound transmission signal by photoacoustic effect. By single laser pulse illumination, both PA signals and reflected US signals can be generated. Then, a linear array probe receives both PA and US signals, enabling simultaneous dual-modal PA and US imaging. Ex vivo experiments were conducted involving pencil lead, hair, and plastic tube with black spot, as well as in vivo experiment on human finger. The system's resolutions for PA and US imaging are 215 um and 91.125 um, with signal-to-noise ratios for PA and US signals reached up to 37.48 dB and 29.75 dB, respectively, proving the feasibility of the coPAUS dual-modal imaging. The proposed coPAUS system with disposable opto-acoustic window provides an immediate and cost-effective approach
Dynamic speckle imaging, typically used in laser-illuminated surface diagnostics, has proven valuable for assessing biological activity. In this work, we demonstrate its feasibility in an endoscopic context using a disposable bronchoscope. Despite technical limitations and aliasing artifacts, our preliminary results show discernible vascular structures, indicating potential for minimally invasive diagnostic applications. It is important to note that the imaging systems used in this study are designed primarily for clinical robustness and classical imaging, including single-use sterility, ease of handling, and real-time visualization, and not for scientific fidelity of visual data or computational post-processing. As such, they are not inherently suited to dynamic speckle analysis, which requires precise control over temporal acquisition parameters, linear response characteristics of the imaging sensor, and stable illumination conditions, particularly from the coherent laser source. Nevertheless, our results demonstrate that, even within these constraints, dynamic speckle imaging is indeed achievable. This opens the door to further adaptation and optimization of such clinical imagin
This paper details the development of an interactive sculpture built from deprecated hardware technology and intentionally decomposable, transient materials. We detail a case study of "Strain" - an emotive prototype that reclaims two orphaned digital artifacts to power a kinetic sculpture made of common disposable objects. We use the Myo, an abandoned myoelectric armband, in concert with the Programmable Air, a soft-robotics prototyping project, to manipulate a pneumatic bladder array constructed from condoms, bamboo skewers, and a small library of 3D printed PLA plastic connectors designed to work with these generic parts. The resulting sculpture achieves surprisingly organic actuation. The goal of this project is to produce several reusable components: software to resuscitate the Myo Armband, homeostasis software for the Programmable Air or equivalent pneumatic projects, and a library of easily-printed parts that will work with generic bamboo disposables for sculptural prototyping. This project works to develop usable, repeatable engineering by applying it to a slightly whimsical object that promotes a strong emotional response in its audience. Through this, we transform the disp
The widespread use of disposable facemasks during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to environmental widespread concern due to microplastic pollution. Biodegradable disposable facemasks are a first step to reducing the environmental impact of pandemics. In this paper we present high-performance facemask components based on novel poly(ester amide) (PEA) grades synthesized from bio-sourced materials and processed into non-woven facemask components. PEA based polymers present an excellent compromise between mechanical performance and biodegradability. Importantly, the properties of the PEA can easily be tuned by changing the ratio of the ester and amides, or variation of diol and diacid part. We synthesized seven polymers which we optimized for biodegradability and processability. Among them, two grades combined electrospinning process compatibility with full degradation within 35 days, using a normalized biodegradation test. The ultra-thin filters thus developed were evaluated for performance on a custom-made characterization bench. The filters achieved a microparticle capture efficiency and breathability comparable to commercial filters. Another PEA grade was optimized to reach optimal
We propose a novel method for securely training the vision transformer (ViT) with sensitive data shared from multiple clients similar to privacy-preserving federated learning. In the proposed method, training images are independently encrypted by each client where encryption keys can be prepared by each client, and ViT is trained by using these encrypted images for the first time. The method allows clients not only to dispose of the keys but to also reduce the communication costs between a central server and the clients. In image classification experiments, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed method on the CIFAR-10 dataset in terms of classification accuracy and the use of restricted random permutation matrices.
Robotic hands are an important tool for replacing humans in handling toxic or radioactive materials. However, these are usually highly expensive, and in many cases, once they are contaminated, they cannot be re-used. Some solutions cope with this challenge by 3D printing parts of a tendon-based hand. However, fabrication requires additional assembly steps. Therefore, a novice user may have difficulties fabricating a hand upon contamination of the previous one. We propose the Print-N-Grip (PNG) hand which is a tendon-based underactuated mechanism able to adapt to the shape of objects. The hand is fabricated through one-shot 3D printing with no additional engineering effort, and can accommodate a number of fingers as desired by the practitioner. Due to its low cost, the PNG hand can easily be detached from a universal base for disposing upon contamination, and replaced by a newly printed one. In addition, the PNG hand is scalable such that one can effortlessly resize the computerized model and print. We present the design of the PNG hand along with experiments to show the capabilities and high durability of the hand.
We present a new approach for real-time monitoring of chemical corrosion based on the radio-frequency (RF) impedance technology and soft ferromagnetic ribbons. The impedance (Z) of a commercial magnetic ribbon was measured in real time for 5 mul of drop-casted HNO3 of various concentrations. Variations in the concentration of the drop-casted acid were assessed by considering the difference in Z with and without the acid treatment. We found a large and linear increase in deltaZ and a large linear decrease in measurement time with the acid concentration, which are ideal for developing disposable chemical sensors for strength estimation of corrosive chemicals and for monitoring of a time-dependent chemical corrosion process. Since the ribbon used is commercially available at low cost and the measurement system is quick and low power consuming, the proposed sensor can be used as an easy, quick, and low-cost chemical probe in industries and environmental hazard management purposes.
Transfer learning is widely used for training deep neural networks (DNN) for building a powerful representation. Even after the pre-trained model is adapted for the target task, the representation performance of the feature extractor is retained to some extent. As the performance of the pre-trained model can be considered the private property of the owner, it is natural to seek the exclusive right of the generalized performance of the pre-trained weight. To address this issue, we suggest a new paradigm of transfer learning called disposable transfer learning (DTL), which disposes of only the source task without degrading the performance of the target task. To achieve knowledge disposal, we propose a novel loss named Gradient Collision loss (GC loss). GC loss selectively unlearns the source knowledge by leading the gradient vectors of mini-batches in different directions. Whether the model successfully unlearns the source task is measured by piggyback learning accuracy (PL accuracy). PL accuracy estimates the vulnerability of knowledge leakage by retraining the scrubbed model on a subset of source data or new downstream data. We demonstrate that GC loss is an effective approach to t
Surgical masks have played a crucial role in healthcare facilities to protect against respiratory and infectious diseases, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the synthetic fibers, mainly made of polypropylene, used in their production may adversely affect the environment and human health. Recent studies have confirmed the presence of microplastics and fibers in human lungs and have related these synthetic particles with the occurrence of pulmonary ground glass nodules. Using a piston system to simulate human breathing, this study investigates the role of surgical masks as a direct source of inhalation of microplastics. Results reveal the release of particles of sizes ranging from nanometers (300 nm) to millimeters (~2 mm) during normal breathing conditions, raising concerns about the potential health risks. Notably, large visible particles (> 1 mm) were observed to be ejected from masks with limited wear after only a few breathing cycles. Given the widespread use of masks by healthcare workers and the potential future need for mask usage by the general population during seasonal infectious diseases or new pandemics, developing face masks using safe materials for
Short Message Service (SMS) is a popular channel for online service providers to verify accounts and authenticate users registered to a particular service. Specialized applications, called Public SMS Gateways (PSGs), offer free Disposable Phone Numbers (DPNs) that can be used to receive SMS messages. DPNs allow users to protect their privacy when creating online accounts. However, they can also be abused for fraudulent activities and to bypass security mechanisms like Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). In this paper, we perform a large-scale and longitudinal study of the DPN ecosystem by monitoring 17,141 unique DPNs in 29 PSGs over the course of 12 months. Using a dataset of over 70M messages, we provide an overview of the ecosystem and study the different services that offer DPNs and their relationships. Next, we build a framework that (i) identifies and classifies the purpose of an SMS; and (ii) accurately attributes every message to more than 200 popular Internet services that require SMS for creating registered accounts. Our results indicate that the DPN ecosystem is globally used to support fraudulent account creation and access, and that this issue is ubiquitous and affects al
Our growing ability to tailor healthcare to the needs of individuals has the potential to transform clinical treatment. However, the measurement of multiple biomarkers to inform clinical decisions requires rapid, effective, and affordable diagnostics. Chronic diseases and rapidly evolving pathogens in a larger population have also escalated the need for improved diagnostic capabilities. Current chemical diagnostics are often performed in centralised facilities and are still dependent on multiple steps, molecular labelling, and detailed analysis causing the result turnaround time to be over hours and days. Rapid diagnostic kits based on lateral flow devices can return results quickly but are only capable of detecting a handful of pathogens or markers. Herein we present the use of disposable plasmonics as a platform for low-cost label-free optical biosensing with multiplexing capabilities, eliminating the need for flow systems often required in current optical biosensors. We demonstrate the biosensing capabilities of a system that uses chiroptical measurements as well as plasmonic enhanced fluorescence from metafilms with shuriken shaped nanoindentations. We also perform the detectio
Spatial perception aims to estimate camera motion and scene structure from visual observations, a problem traditionally addressed through geometric modeling and physical consistency constraints. Recent learning-based methods have demonstrated strong representational capacity for geometric perception and are increasingly used to augment classical geometry-centric systems in practice. However, whether learning components should directly replace geometric estimation or instead serve as intermediate modules within such pipelines remains an open question. In this work, we address this gap and investigate an end-to-end modular framework for effective spatial reasoning, where learning proposes geometric hypotheses, while geometric algorithms dispose estimation decisions. In particular, we study this principle in the context of relative camera pose estimation on RGB-D sequences. Using VGGT as a representative learning model, we evaluate learning-based pose and depth proposals under varying motion magnitudes and scene dynamics, followed by a classical point-to-plane RGB-D ICP as the geometric backend. Our experiments on the TUM RGB-D benchmark reveal three consistent findings: (1) learning-
The increasing demand for hygienic and contactless solutions in public and private environments has encouraged the development of automated systems for everyday applications. This paper presents the design and implementation of a motion- sensing automatic waste bin using an STM32 microcontroller, ultrasonic sensors, and a servo motor. The system detects user presence through ultrasonic sensing and automatically opens the bin lid using a servo motor controlled by the microcontroller. An additional ultrasonic sensor is used to monitor the internal waste level of the bin, while an OLED display provides real- time feedback regarding system status. The proposed system offers a low-cost, reliable, and easily deployable solution for touch-free waste disposal. Experimental evaluation demonstrates fast response time, stable sensing performance, and smooth mechanical operation. The system can be effectively deployed in homes, educational institutions, hospitals, and public facilities to improve hygiene and user convenience.
For years, supply chain planning at e-commerce firms has operated as a collection of isolated projects. Each planning task from static network planning to dynamic warehouse assortment planning requires analysts to spend weeks building models from scratch, calibrating and persuading executives to act on outputs they cannot verify. Three barriers drive this: bespoke models proliferate because standardization is difficult (operational fragmentation); once unified, the combinatorial scale of millions of SKUs, thousands of nodes, and intricate routing logic exceeds what solvers can handle within a tight window (computational intractability); and a mathematically optimal solution still fails to be implemented if the executives do not trust it (implementation hurdle). To bridge this gap, we propose and implement the Simulation-Propose-then-OR-Dispose method, deployed as JD.com's NetSim platform. The central insight is decoupling: simulation proposes by generating and evaluating the full set of operationally valid candidate paths-absorbing all idiosyncratic business logic, while an integer program disposes by selecting the globally optimal subset. Computationally, matrix-vectorized CPU/GPU
Recovering 3D human poses for multiple individuals from different camera views is a fundamental bottleneck for analyzing interacting behaviors. Existing self-supervised approaches leverage synthetic catalogues of 3D poses; however, this leads to poor generalization in real-world scenarios due to distribution shifts. We therefore introduce DisPOSE, a self-supervised framework that approximates the inherently discrete multi-view person-assignment problem as a generative diffusion process over the space of polystochastic tensors. By employing differentiable Sinkhorn projections during denoising, our model learns to guide solutions toward valid and feasible assignments based on 2D image priors. The complete 3D skeletons of localized individuals are then regressed using a Hypergraph-Convolutional Decoder that explicitly models relational structures and articulated joints across multiple views. The proposed approach outperforms current state-of-the-art self-supervised methods on standard datasets and demonstrates strong performance on a newly proposed benchmark featuring highly occluded scenes from surgical operating rooms. Our diffusion-based localization demonstrates high label efficie
Representation learning with Vision Transformers (ViTs) has advanced rapidly, yet the utility of large-scale models in spatially sensitive tasks is hindered by spurious tokens. Prior efforts to mitigate this have been limited, often defining these artifacts narrowly, for example, as simple high-norm outliers. We argue that this scope is insufficient. For dense prediction tasks, we posit that any token failing to encode location-aligned semantics should be treated as a spurious artifact. This broader definition reveals a more complex problem, leading us to systematically categorize and characterize three fundamental types of spurious tokens that corrupt spatial representations. Based on this comprehensive diagnosis, we propose UniRefiner, a universal refinement framework that teaches pre-trained ViTs to self-dispose of these artifacts. UniRefiner uses contrastive registers to explicitly isolate and redistribute spurious tokens via a dual objective: (i) it aligns image tokens with filtered regular tokens to preserve semantics, and (ii) it aligns register tokens with detected spurious tokens to capture the spurious signals. Our method requires only a few epochs of fine-tuning on ~5k i
In this work we propose a new online, low cost and fast approach based on computer vision and machine learning to determine whether cutting tools used in edge profile milling processes are serviceable or disposable based on their wear level. We created a new dataset of 254 images of edge profile cutting heads which is, to the best of our knowledge, the first publicly available dataset with enough quality for this purpose. All the inserts were segmented and their cutting edges were cropped, obtaining 577 images of cutting edges: 301 functional and 276 disposable. The proposed method is based on (1) dividing the cutting edge image in different regions, called Wear Patches (WP), (2) characterising each one as worn or serviceable using texture descriptors based on different variants of Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and (3) determine, based on the state of these WP, if the cutting edge (and, therefore, the tool) is serviceable or disposable. We proposed and assessed five different patch division configurations. The individual WP were classified by a Support Vector Machine (SVM) with an intersection kernel. The best patch division configuration and texture descriptor for the WP achieves an
As human activities on the Moon expand through initiatives like NASA's Artemis program, the need for sustainable post-mission disposal strategies becomes critical to maintaining the lunar environment. This paper analyzes the logistics and environmental implications of waste products generated by In-Situ Resource Utilization technologies employed in oxygen production on the Moon. The study examines the inputs, generation of products, and the resulting byproducts from Molten Regolith Electrolysis, Soil/Water Extraction, and Direct Water Electrolysis systems. These technologies yield varied byproducts, including slag, metals and volatiles, each presenting unique challenges for disposal and recycling. The analysis assesses the economic and ecological impacts of In-Situ Resource Utilization activities on lunar operations using a multi-commodity flow model adapted from cislunar logistics frameworks. The results inform that ISRU-enabled missions achieve a significant threefold cost reduction. However, the management of byproducts remains a critical challenge, demanding innovative solutions to address their impact and support scalable and sustainable lunar exploration.
Reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) enhances the reasoning of large language models (LLMs), but standard RLVR often depends on human-annotated answers or carefully curated reward specifications. In machine-checkable domains, label-free alternatives such as majority voting or LLM-as-a-judge remove annotation cost but can introduce false positives that destabilize training. We introduce JURY-RL, a label-free RLVR framework that decouples answer proposal from reward disposal: votes from model rollouts propose a candidate answer, and a formal verifier determines whether that candidate can receive positive reward. Concretely, only rollouts matching the plurality-voted answer are rewarded when that answer is successfully verified in Lean. When verification is inconclusive, we invoke ResZero (Residual-Zero), a fallback reward that discards the unverified plurality proposal and redistributes a zero-mean, variance-preserving signal over the residual answers. This design maintains a stable optimization gradient without reinforcing unverifiable consensus. Across three backbone models trained on mathematical data, JURY-RL consistently outperforms other label-free baselines on
