In recent decades, the relevance of polarimetry in planetary sciences and astronomy has increased rapidly. Polarization is a fundamental property of light and can be modified by any scattering event. As such, polarization yields additional information that cannot be obtained by only assessing light's scalar properties. For instance, the polarization state of starlight scattered by planetary surfaces can provide useful insights on the composition, size, morphology, and porosity of regolith particles and might even indicate the presence of life. Beside being useful for characterization, polarimetry can also greatly enhance the detection of exoplanets. Here, polarization can be harnessed to enhance the contrast between the bright light of a star, which can be considered to be fully unpolarized, and the very dim but polarized light reflected by an exoplanet. In this paper, we discuss and review the current developments and advances in optical polarimetry and polarimetric instrumentation in Switzerland within the framework of the National Centre of Competence in Research PlanetS. We focus on their implications for the vast range of science cases that polarimetry can address within the r
Background: Allium vegetables (garlic and onion) are one of the flavorings in people's daily diets. Observational studies suggest that intake of allium vegetables may be correlated with a lower incidence of digestive system cancers. However, the existence of a causal relationship is still controversial due to confounding factors and reverse causation. Therefore, we explored the causal relationship between intake of allium vegetables and digestive system cancers using Mendelian randomization approach. Methods: First, we performed Mendelian randomization analyses using inverse variance weighting (IVW), weighted median, and MR-Egger approaches, and demonstrated the reliability of the results in the sensitivity step. Second, Multivariable Mendelian randomization was applied to adjust for smoking and alcohol consumption. Third, we explored the molecular mechanisms behind the positive results through network pharmacology and molecular docking methods. Results: The study suggests that increased intake of garlic reduced gastric cancer risk. However, onion intake was not statistically associated with digestive system cancer. Conclusion: Garlic may have a protective effect against gastric ca
Intestinal microecology is established from birth and is constantly changing until homeostasis is reached. Intestinal microecology is involved in the immune inflammatory response of the intestine and regulates the intestinal barrier function. The imbalance of intestinal microecology is closely related to the occurrence and development of digestive system diseases. In some gastrointestinal diseases related to pediatric surgery, intestinal microecology and its metabolites undergo a series of changes, which can provide a certain basis for the diagnosis of diseases. The continuous development of microecological agents and fecal microbiota transplantation technology has provided a new means for its clinical treatment. We review the relationship between pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of pediatric surgery-related gastrointestinal diseases and intestinal microecology, in order to provide new ideas and methods for clinical diagnosis, treatment and research.
Livestock mobility, particularly that of small and large ruminants, is one of the main pillars of production and trade in West Africa: livestock is moved around in search of better grazing or sold in markets for domestic consumption and for festival-related activities. These movements cover several thousand kilometers and have the capability of connecting the whole West African region thus facilitating the diffusion of many animal and zoonotic diseases. Several factors shape mobility patterns even in normal years and surveillance systems need to account for such changes. In this paper, we present a procedure based on temporal network theory to identify possible sentinel locations using two indicators: vulnerability (i.e. the probability of being reached by the disease) and time of infection (i.e. the time of first arrival of the disease). Using these indicators in our structural analysis of the changing network enabled us to identify a set of nodes that could be used in an early warning system. As a case study we simulated the introduction of F.A.S.T. (Foot and Mouth Similar Transboundary) diseases in Senegal and used data taken from 2020 Sanitary certificates (LPS, laissez-passer
The emerging field of Molecular Communication (MC) aims to characterize biological-based signaling environment through information that are encoded into molecules. Since the birth of this field, a number of different applications and biological systems have been characterized using MC theory. This study proposes a new application and direction for MC, focusing on the digestive system, where we characterize and model the starch and glucose propagation along the small intestine. Based on the advection-diffusion and reaction mechanisms, we define a channel capacity for the small intestine digestive tract that is dependent on the starch to glucose conversion, velocity flow within the tract, viscosity of the digest product, and length of the tract and position of the receivers for glucose absorption. The numerical results from the derived channel capacity model shows that the SI digestive capacity depends both on physiological factors of the digestive system and type of consumed food, where the digestive capacity is greater for shorter gastric emptying time, low viscosity of the digest product and efficient enzyme activity. We believe that our digital MC model of the digestive tract and
Rare diseases are collectively common, affecting approximately one in twenty individuals worldwide. In recent years, rapid progress has been made in rare disease diagnostics due to advances in DNA sequencing, development of new computational and experimental approaches to prioritize genes and genetic variants, and increased global exchange of clinical and genetic data. However, more than half of individuals suspected to have a rare disease lack a genetic diagnosis. The Genomics Research to Elucidate the Genetics of Rare Diseases (GREGoR) Consortium was initiated to study thousands of challenging rare disease cases and families and apply, standardize, and evaluate emerging genomics technologies and analytics to accelerate their adoption in clinical practice. Further, all data generated, currently representing ~7500 individuals from ~3000 families, is rapidly made available to researchers worldwide via the Genomic Data Science Analysis, Visualization, and Informatics Lab-space (AnVIL) to catalyze global efforts to develop approaches for genetic diagnoses in rare diseases (https://gregorconsortium.org/data). The majority of these families have undergone prior clinical genetic testing
Prion diseases are invariably fatal and highly infectious neurodegenerative diseases affecting humans and animals. By now there have not been some effective therapeutic approaches to treat all these prion diseases. In 2008, canine mammals including dogs (canis familials) were the first time academically reported to be resistant to prion diseases (Vaccine 26: 2601--2614 (2008)). Rabbits are the mammalian species known to be resistant to infection from prion diseases from other species (Journal of Virology 77: 2003--2009 (2003)). Horses were reported to be resistant to prion diseases too (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA 107: 19808--19813 (2010)). By now all the NMR structures of dog, rabbit and horse prion proteins had been released into protein data bank respectively in 2005, 2007 and 2010 (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA 102: 640--645 (2005), Journal of Biomolecular NMR 38:181 (2007), Journal of Molecular Biology 400: 121--128 (2010)). Thus, at this moment it is very worth studying the NMR molecular structures of horse, dog and rabbit prion proteins to obtain insights into their immunity prion diseases. This article reports the findings of th
The rapidly increasing volume of electronic health record (EHR) data underscores a pressing need to unlock biomedical knowledge from unstructured clinical texts to support advancements in data-driven clinical systems, including patient diagnosis, disease progression monitoring, treatment effects assessment, prediction of future clinical events, etc. While contextualized language models have demonstrated impressive performance improvements for named entity recognition (NER) systems in English corpora, there remains a scarcity of research focused on clinical texts in low-resource languages. To bridge this gap, our study aims to develop multiple deep contextual embedding models to enhance clinical NER in the cardiology domain, as part of the BioASQ MultiCardioNER shared task. We explore the effectiveness of different monolingual and multilingual BERT-based models, trained on general domain text, for extracting disease and medication mentions from clinical case reports written in English, Spanish, and Italian. We achieved an F1-score of 77.88% on Spanish Diseases Recognition (SDR), 92.09% on Spanish Medications Recognition (SMR), 91.74% on English Medications Recognition (EMR), and 88.
Univariate zero-inflated models are increasingly being used to account for excess zeros in spatio-temporal infectious disease counts. However, the multivariate case is challenging due to the need to account for correlations across space, time and disease in both the count and zero-inflated components of the model. We are interested in comparing the transmission dynamics of several co-circulating infectious diseases across space and time, where some of the diseases can be absent for long periods. We first assume there is a baseline disease that is well-established and always present in the region. The other diseases switch between periods of presence and absence in each area through a series of coupled Markov chains, which account for long periods of disease absence, disease interactions and disease spread from neighboring areas. Since we are mainly interested in comparing the diseases, we assume the cases of the present diseases in an area jointly follow an autoregressive multinomial model. We use the multinomial model to investigate whether there are associations between certain factors, such as temperature, and differences in the transmission intensity of the diseases. Inference
Labeling or classifying time series is a persistent challenge in the physical sciences, where expert annotations are scarce, costly, and often inconsistent. Yet robust labeling is essential to enable machine learning models for understanding, prediction, and forecasting. We present the \textit{Clustering and Indexation Pipeline with Human Evaluation for Recognition} (CIPHER), a framework designed to accelerate large-scale labeling of complex time series in physics. CIPHER integrates \textit{indexable Symbolic Aggregate approXimation} (iSAX) for interpretable compression and indexing, density-based clustering (HDBSCAN) to group recurring phenomena, and a human-in-the-loop step for efficient expert validation. Representative samples are labeled by domain scientists, and these annotations are propagated across clusters to yield systematic, scalable classifications. We evaluate CIPHER on the task of classifying solar wind phenomena in OMNI data, a central challenge in space weather research, showing that the framework recovers meaningful phenomena such as coronal mass ejections and stream interaction regions. Beyond this case study, CIPHER highlights a general strategy for combining sy
This study presents the development of the PsyCogMetrics AI Lab (psycogmetrics.ai), an integrated, cloud-based platform that operationalizes psychometric and cognitive-science methodologies for Large Language Model (LLM) evaluation. Framed as a three-cycle Action Design Science study, the Relevance Cycle identifies key limitations in current evaluation methods and unfulfilled stakeholder needs. The Rigor Cycle draws on kernel theories such as Popperian falsifiability, Classical Test Theory, and Cognitive Load Theory to derive deductive design objectives. The Design Cycle operationalizes these objectives through nested Build-Intervene-Evaluate loops. The study contributes a novel IT artifact, a validated design for LLM evaluation, benefiting research at the intersection of AI, psychology, cognitive science, and the social and behavioral sciences.
Prion diseases are invariably fatal and highly infectious neurodegenerative diseases affecting humans and animals. The neurodegenerative diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseases, Gerstmann-Str$\ddot{a}$ussler-Scheinker syndrome, Fatal Familial Insomnia, Kuru in humans, scrapie in sheep, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (or 'mad-cow' disease) and chronic wasting disease in cattle belong to prion diseases. By now there have not been some effective therapeutic approaches to treat all these prion diseases. Dogs, rabbits and horses were reported to be resistant to prion diseases. By the end of year 2010 all the NMR structures of dog, rabbit and horse prion proteins (X-ray for rabbits too) had been finished to release into protein data bank. Thus, at this moment it is very worth studying the NMR and X-ray molecular structures of horse, dog and rabbit prion proteins to obtain insights into their immunity prion diseases. The author found that dog and horse prion proteins have stable molecular dynamical structures whether under neutral or low pH environments, but rabbit prion protein has stable molecular dynamical structures only under neutral pH enviro
Symbolic regression (SR) has emerged as a powerful method for uncovering interpretable mathematical relationships from data, offering a novel route to both scientific discovery and efficient empirical modelling. This article introduces the Special Issue on Symbolic Regression for the Physical Sciences, motivated by the Royal Society discussion meeting held in April 2025. The contributions collected here span applications from automated equation discovery and emergent-phenomena modelling to the construction of compact emulators for computationally expensive simulations. The introductory review outlines the conceptual foundations of SR, contrasts it with conventional regression approaches, and surveys its main use cases in the physical sciences, including the derivation of effective theories, empirical functional forms and surrogate models. We summarise methodological considerations such as search-space design, operator selection, complexity control, feature selection, and integration with modern AI approaches. We also highlight ongoing challenges, including scalability, robustness to noise, overfitting and computational complexity. Finally we emphasise emerging directions, particula
The technology industry offers exciting and diverse career opportunities, ranging from traditional software development to emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science. Career fairs play a crucial role in helping Computer Science (CS) students understand the various career pathways available to them in the industry. However, limited research exists on how CS students experience and benefit from these events. Through a survey of 86 students, we investigate their motivations for attending, preparation strategies, and learning outcomes, including exposure to new career paths and technologies. We envision our findings providing valuable insights for career services professionals, educators, and industry leaders in improving the career development processes of CS students.
Machine learning is rapidly making its pathway across all of the natural sciences, including physical sciences. The rate at which ML is impacting non-scientific disciplines is incomparable to that in the physical sciences. This is partly due to the uninterpretable nature of deep neural networks. Symbolic machine learning stands as an equal and complementary partner to numerical machine learning in speeding up scientific discovery in physics. This perspective discusses the main differences between the ML and scientific approaches. It stresses the need to develop and apply symbolic machine learning to physics problems equally, in parallel to numerical machine learning, because of the dual nature of physics research.
Do different fields of knowledge require different research strategies? A numerical model exploring different virtual knowledge landscapes, revealed two diverging optimal search strategies. Trend following is maximized when the popularity of new discoveries determine the number of individuals researching it. This strategy works best when many researchers explore few large areas of knowledge. In contrast, individuals or small groups of researchers are better in discovering small bits of information in dispersed knowledge landscapes. Bibliometric data of scientific publications showed a continuous bipolar distribution of these strategies, ranging from natural sciences, with highly cited publications in journals containing a large number of articles, to the social sciences, with rarely cited publications in many journals containing a small number of articles. The natural sciences seem to adapt their research strategies to landscapes with large concentrated knowledge clusters, whereas social sciences seem to have adapted to search in landscapes with many small isolated knowledge clusters. Similar bipolar distributions were obtained when comparing levels of insularity estimated by indic
With the increasing application of automated robotic digestive endoscopy (RDE), ensuring safe and efficient navigation in the unstructured and narrow digestive tract has become a critical challenge. Existing automated reinforcement learning navigation algorithms often result in potentially risky collisions due to the absence of essential human intervention, which significantly limits the safety and effectiveness of RDE in actual clinical practice. To address this limitation, we proposed a Human Intervention (HI)-based Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) framework, dubbed HI-PPO, which incorporates expert knowledge to enhance RDE's safety. Specifically, HI-PPO combines Enhanced Exploration Mechanism (EEM), Reward-Penalty Adjustment (RPA), and Behavior Cloning Similarity (BCS) to address PPO's exploration inefficiencies for safe navigation in complex gastrointestinal environments. Comparative experiments were conducted on a simulation platform, and the results showed that HI-PPO achieved a mean ATE (Average Trajectory Error) of \(8.02\ \text{mm}\) and a Security Score of \(0.862\), demonstrating performance comparable to human experts. The code will be publicly available once this pap
Consumption of food in excess of the required optimal nutritional requirements has already resulted in a global crisis and this is from the perspective of human health, such as obesity, as well as food waste and sustainability. In order to minimize the impact of these issues, there is a need to develop novel innovative and effective solutions that can optimally match the food consumption to the demand. This requires accurate understanding of the food digestion dynamics and its impact on each individual's physiological characteristics. This study proposes a model to characterize digestive system dynamics by using concepts from the field of Molecular Communications (MC), and this includes integrating advection-diffusion and reaction mechanisms and its role in characterizing the digestion process as a communication system. The model is then used to explore starch digestion dynamics by using communication system metrics such as delay and path loss. Our simulations found that the long gastric emptying time increases the delay in starch digestion and in turn the glucose production and absorption into the blood stream. At the same time, the enzyme activity on the hydrolyzed starch directl
In this chapter, an application of Mathematical Epidemiology to crop vector-borne diseases is presented to investigate the interactions between crops, vectors, and virus. The main illustrative example is the cassava mosaic disease (CMD). The CMD virus has two routes of infection: through vectors and also through infected crops. In the field, the main tool to control CMD spreading is roguing. The presented biological model is sufficiently generic and the same methodology can be adapted to other crops or crop vector-borne diseases. After an introduction where a brief history of crop diseases and useful information on Cassava and CMD is given, we develop and study a compartmental temporal model, taking into account the crop growth and the vector dynamics. A brief qualitative analysis of the model is provided,i.e., existence and uniqueness of a solution, existence of a disease-free equilibrium and existence of an endemic equilibrium. We also provide conditions for local (global) asymptotic stability and show that a Hopf Bifurcation may occur, for instance, when diseased plants are removed. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate all possible behaviors. Finally, we discuss the t
Rare disease diagnosis increasingly relies on integrating genomic, phenotypic and transcriptomic evidence, yet these signals remain difficult to reconcile within a common interpretive framework. Here we present RareCollab, an LLM-powered framework for multimodal reasoning in Mendelian disease diagnosis that integrates more than 100 diagnostic evidence signals across DNA, RNA, phenotype, curated variant-level knowledge, and in-silico pathogenicity evidence. This design enables large language models to operate as calibrated, interpretable reasoning modules rather than as a single end-to-end ranker. We applied RareCollab to 890 patients from three cohorts, including 119 Undiagnosed Diseases Network probands with paired DNA and RNA data, constituting a large systematic benchmark for multimodal rare disease diagnosis under paired genomic and transcriptomic evaluation. In this real-world multimodal benchmark, RareCollab prioritized 94% of diagnostic genes within the top 10. Across recall thresholds from top 1 to top 10, it consistently outperformed proprietary phenotype-driven LLM baselines including Claude Sonnet 4.6 and GPT-5-mini by more than 25% on average and surpassed established s
