This study estimated the 1-year survival of early-loaded Defcon treatment surface Avantblast (TSA) implants (Impladent; Sentmenat, Barcelona, Spain) and compared this success rate with those reported in the literature for conventionally loaded implants. In this retrospective case series study, the sample comprised subjects receiving 1 or more implants placed and loaded early between 2002 and 2005. The definition of implant success was based on clinical and radiologic Buser's criteria; all patients had a follow-up period of 1 year. Information was collected on patient age, gender, oral hygiene, and smoking status; implant location, diameter, and length; and prosthetic parameters for performing an implant survival analysis. A total of 642 Defcon TSA implants were placed (318 in the maxilla and 324 in the mandible) in 192 patients, who were rehabilitated with 298 prostheses. The implant survival rate was 98.13%. A review of the literature on early loading between 2001 and 2005 revealed a success rate of 98.4%. Our recorded success rate is similar to that found in the reviewed literature corresponding to large series of patients subjected to early implant loading.
Implementation of defined contribution will succeed in a competitive marketplace where providers set acceptable fees and risk levels, and consumers make informed choices based on personal values.
Implant dentistry constitutes a therapeutic modality in the prosthodontic treatment of partially and totally edentulous patients. This study reports a long-term evaluation of treatment by the early loading of acid-etched surface implants. Forty-eight partially and totally edentulous patients were treated with 169 TSA Defcon® acid-etched surface implants for prosthodontic rehabilitation. Implants were loaded after a healing free-loading period of 6-8 weeks in mandible and maxilla, respectively. Implant and prosthodontic clinical findings were followed during at least 17 years. Clinical results indicate a survival and success rate of implants of 92.9%, demonstrating that acid-etched surface achieves and maintains successful osseointegration. Five implants in three patients were lost during the healing period. Sixty-five prostheses were placed in 45 patients over the remaining 164 implants, 30 single crowns, 21 partially fixed bridges, 9 overdentures, and 5 full-arch fixed rehabilitations. A total of 12 implants were lost during the follow-up period. Mean marginal bone loss was 1.91 ± 1.24 mm, ranging from 1.1 to 3.6 mm. The most frequent complication was prosthetic technical complications (14.2%), followed by peri-implantitis (10.6%). The mean follow-up was of 214.4 months (208-228 months). Prosthodontic rehabilitation with an early-loading protocol over acid-etched surface implants is a successful implant treatment.
The objective of the present study was to measure the implant stability quotient (ISQ) values during the osseointegration period, and determine the factors that affect implant stability. To measure implant stability, resonance frequency analysis (RFA) was performed in 24 patients (12 women, 12 men) with a total 64 Defcon implants (10 anterior maxilla, 12 posterior maxilla, 18 anterior mandible, 24 posterior mandible). Bone type was classified according to the Lekholm and Zarb index (52 type II bone, 12 type III). RFA was used for direct measurement of implant stability on the day of implant placement and consecutively once a week for 8 weeks and at week 10. The mean ISQ of all measured implants was 62.6. The lowest mean stability measurement was at 4 weeks for all bone types (60.9). Gender was found to be significant (p<0.05); women showed higher implant stability than men. In relation to location within the dental arch, statistical analysis showed higher ISQ values for anterior implants than posterior fixtures (p<0.05).
There are many surface treatments applied to dental implants. The aim of the present investigation is to compare the physicochemical characteristics of titanium dental implant surfaces with different surface treatments. 9 dental implants from the same batch were divided in 3 groups and received 3 different surface treatments: machined, acid etched and a new chemical surface treatment called Avantblast. Scanning electron microscopy and confocal microscopy were used to image the treated surfaces, and energy-dispersive spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry to provide a chemical characterization of the surfaces. The acid etched and chemical etched surfaces had an increased roughness over the machined one. Surface chemical composition had differences between processes, as the surface with the new treatment presented a reduced level of impurities and increased thickness of the titanium oxide layer. Surface roughness of titanium dental implants and thickness of the titanium oxide layer can be increased with a suitable surface treatment.
To determine the survival of immediate dental implants with immediate loading in the partially edentulous mandible, by use of a full-arch screw-retained provisional restoration. Patients who were partially edentulous in the mandible with indications for extraction of the remaining teeth and with a minimum follow-up of 12 months after implant placement were included in the study. They were treated in chronologic order by the insertion of 6 Defcon dental implants (Impladent, Sentmenat, Spain) subjected to immediate loading (4 interforaminal and 2 posterior placements). Implants with a minimum primary stability of 60 implant stability quotient were loaded. All resin screw-retained prostheses were inserted and loaded with fully functional occlusion within 24 hours of implant placement. Eleven patients were treated with immediate implants, although 2 patients were excluded from the study for having an implant stability quotient value below 60 in at least one of the implants after surgery and did not undergo restoration with immediate loading. Fifty-four implants were placed in 9 partially edentulous patients with immediate loading with a full-arch screw-fixed prosthesis. The patients wore this provisional prosthesis during the healing period (2 months) without complication and with a high level of comfort. The survival rate of the implants was 100% at 12 months of follow-up. Immediate mandibular loading with immediate full-arch implant-supported and screw-retained restorations is a viable treatment alternative, yielding a 100% success rate in this small series of patients.
Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Previous work in both animals and humans with high blood pressure has demonstrated the antihypertensive effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), although it is not known whether these nutrients are effective in preventing hypertension. The predominant n-3 PUFA in the mammalian nervous system, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is deposited into synaptic membranes at a high rate during the perinatal period, and recent observations indicate that the perinatal environment is important for the normal development of blood pressure control. This study investigated the importance of perinatal n-3 PUFA supply in the control of blood pressure in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Pregnant rat dams were fed semisynthetic diets that were either deficient in (DEF) or supplemented with (CON) n-3 PUFA. Offspring were fed the same diets as their mothers until 9 wk; then, half of the rats from each group were crossed over to the opposite diet creating four groups, i.e., CON-CON; CON-DEF; DEF-DEF, DEF-CON. Mean arterial blood pressures (MAP) were measured directly, at 33 wk of age, by cannulation of the femoral artery. The phospholipid fatty acid profile of the hypothalamic region was determined by capillary gas-liquid chromatography. The tissue phospholipid fatty acid profile reflected the diet that the rats were consuming at the time of testing. Both groups receiving DEF after 9 wk of age (i.e., DEF-DEF and CON-DEF) had similar profiles with a reduction in DHA levels of 30%, compared with rats receiving CON (i.e., CON-CON and DEF-CON). DEF-DEF rats had significantly raised MAP compared with all other groups, with differences as great as 17 mm Hg. DEF-CON rats had raised MAP compared with CON-CON rats, and DEF-DEF rats had higher MAP than CON-DEF rats, despite the fact that their respective fatty acid profiles were not different. These findings indicate that inadequate levels of DHA in the perinatal period are associated with altered blood pressure control in later life. The way in which these long-term effects are produced remains to be elucidated.
Evaluating defensive performance in soccer remains challenging, as effective defending is often expressed not through visible on-ball actions such as interceptions and tackles, but through preventing dangerous opportunities before they arise. Existing approaches have largely focused on valuing on-ball actions, leaving much of defenders' true impact unmeasured. To address this gap, we propose DEFCON (DEFensive CONtribution evaluator), a comprehensive framework that quantifies player-level defensive contributions for every attacking situation in soccer. Leveraging Graph Attention Networks, DEFCON estimates the success probability and expected value of each attacking option, along with each defender's responsibility for stopping it. These components yield an Expected Possession Value (EPV) for the attacking team before and after each action, and DEFCON assigns positive or negative credits to defenders according to whether they reduced or increased the opponent's EPV. Trained on 2023-24 and evaluated on 2024-25 Eredivisie event and tracking data, DEFCON's aggregated player credits exhibit strong positive correlations with market valuations. Finally, we showcase several practical applic
The rapid proliferation of Model Context Protocol (MCP)-based agentic systems has introduced a new category of security threats that existing frameworks are inadequately equipped to address. We present MCPThreatHive, an open-source platform that automates the end-to-end lifecycle of MCP threat intelligence: from continuous, multi-source data collection through AI-driven threat extraction and classification, to structured knowledge graph storage and interactive visualization. The platform operationalizes the MCP-38 threat taxonomy, a curated set of 38 MCP-specific threat patterns mapped to STRIDE, OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications, and OWASP Top 10 for Agentic Applications. A composite risk scoring model provides quantitative prioritization. Through a comparative analysis of representative existing MCP security tools, we identify three critical coverage gaps that MCPThreatHive addresses: incomplete compositional attack modeling, absence of continuous threat intelligence, and lack of unified multi-framework classification.
Security conferences are important venues for information sharing, where academics and practitioners share knowledge about new attacks and state-of-the-art defenses. Despite their importance, researchers have not systematically examined who shares information and which security topics are discussed. To address this gap, our paper characterizes the speakers, sponsors, and topics presented at prestigious academic and industry security conferences. We compile a longitudinal dataset containing 9,728 abstracts and 1,686 sponsors across four academic and six industry conferences. Our findings show limited information sharing between industry and academia. Conferences vary significantly in how equitably talks and authorship are distributed across individuals. The topics of academic and industry abstracts display consistent coverage of techniques within the MITRE ATT&CK framework. Top-tier academic conferences, as well as DEFCON and Black Hat, address the governance, response, and recovery functions of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework inconsistently. Commercial information security and insurance conferences (RSA, Gartner, Advisen and NetDiligence) more consistently cover the framework.
