Aqueous chemistry within carbonaceous planetesimals is promising for synthesizing prebiotic organic matter essential to all life. Meteorites derived from these planetesimals delivered these life building blocks to the early Earth, potentially facilitating the origins of life. Here, we studied the formation of vitamin B$_3$ as it is an important precursor of the coenzyme NAD(P)(H), which is essential for the metabolism of all life as we know it. We propose a new reaction mechanism based on known experiments in the literature that explains the synthesis of vitamin B$_3$. It combines the sugar precursors glyceraldehyde or dihydroxyacetone with the amino acids aspartic acid or asparagine in aqueous solution without oxygen or other oxidizing agents. We performed thermochemical equilibrium calculations to test the thermodynamic favorability. The predicted vitamin B$_3$ abundances resulting from this new pathway were compared with measured values in asteroids and meteorites. We conclude that competition for reactants and decomposition by hydrolysis are necessary to explain the prebiotic content of meteorites. In sum, our model fits well into the complex network of chemical pathways active
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a widely used organosilicon polymer often employed in formulations with fine oxide particles for various high temperature applications. Although PDMS is considered to be thermally stable and chemically inert, it is not always clear how the oxide filler influences its thermoresistance, decomposition chemistry and what reactive products are formed in the underlying thermal reactions. In this work we use temperature programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD MS) to study the pyrolysis of PDMS and its composites with nanosized silica and ceria/silica. Our results suggest that the elusive organosilicon compound - dimethylsilanone is generated from PDMS over a broad temperature range (in some cases starting at 70$°$C). The presence of nano-oxides catalyzed this process. Ions characteristic of the fragmentation of dimethylsilanone under electron ionization were assigned with the aid of DFT structure calculations. Possible reaction mechanisms for generating dimethylsilanone were discussed in the context of the calculated kinetic parameters. Observed accompanying products of PDMS pyrolysis, such as tetramethylcyclodisiloxane and hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane, i
This mini review focuses on conductance measurements through molecular junctions containing few tens of molecules, which are fabricated along two approaches: (i) conducting atomic force microscope contacting a self-assembled monolayers on metal surface, and (ii) tiny molecular junctions made of metal nanodot (diameter < 10 nm), covered by fewer than 100 molecules and contacted by a conducting atomic force microscope. In particular, this latter approach has allowed to obtain new results or to revisit previous ones, which are reviewed here: (i) how the electron transport properties of molecular junctions are modified by mechanical constraint, (ii) the role of intermolecular interactions on the shape of conductance histograms of molecular junctions, and (iii) the demonstration that a molecular diode can operate in the microwave regime up to 18 GHz.
The fabrication of electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) with high areal capacitance relies on the use of elevated mass loadings of highly porous active materials. Herein, we demonstrate a high-throughput manufacturing of graphene/nanotubes hybrid EDLCs. Wet-jet milling (WJM) method is exploited to exfoliate the graphite into single/few-layer graphene flakes (WJM-G) in industrial volume (production rate ~0.5 kg/day). Commercial single/double walled carbon nanotubes (SDWCNTs) are mixed with graphene flakes in order to act as spacers between the graphene flakes during their film formation. The latter is obtained by one-step vacuum filtration, resulting in self-standing, metal- and binder-free flexible EDLC electrodes with high active material mass loadings up to 30 mg cm-2. The corresponding symmetric WJM-G/SDWCNTs EDLCs exhibit electrode energy densities of 539 uWh cm-2 at 1.3 mW cm-2 and operating power densities up to 532 mW cm-2 (outperforming most of the EDLC technologies). The EDCLs show excellent cycling stability and outstanding flexibility even under highly folded states (up to 180 degrees). The combination of industrial-like production of active materials, simplif
Evolutionary structure searches are used to predict a new class of compounds in the lithium--rich region of the lithium/hydrogen phase diagram under pressure. First principles computations show that LimH, 4<m<9, are stabilized with respect to LiH and Li between 50-100 GPa. The building block of all of the lithium subhydrides is an Li8H cluster, which can be thought of as a superalkali. The geometries and electronic structures of these phases is analogous to that of the well-known alkali metal suboxides.
