This paper presents a comprehensive dataset of doctoral theses defended in France between 1985 and 2025, constructed from multiple national academic metadata sources. The dataset is primarily based on data from the French national thesis platform and is enriched using additional authority and bibliographic databases to improve data quality, completeness, and interoperability. The data production pipeline includes the aggregation of heterogeneous sources, the correction of inconsistent identifiers, the enrichment of person and institution records, and the construction of derived variables describing academic careers, jury participation, institutional affiliations, and thesis characteristics. Additional identifiers from major academic repositories and library catalogues are integrated to facilitate linkage with external data sources and future dataset extensions. The resulting dataset provides structured information at the thesis, individual, and institutional levels, enabling both descriptive and relational analyses. We revisit the classic paper of Tirole "Asset Bubbles and Overlapping Generations" (1985, Econometrica), which shows that the emergence of asset bubbles solves the capital over-accumulation problem. While Tirole's main insight holds with pure bubbles (assets without dividends), we argue that his original analysis with a dividend-paying asset contains some issues. We provide a fairly complete analysis of Tirole's model with general dividends such as equilibrium existence, uniqueness, and long-run behavior under weaker but explicit assumptions and complement with examples based on closed-form solutions. Some of the claims in Tirole (1985) require qualifications including (i) after the introduction of an asset with negligible dividends, the economy may collapse towards zero capital stock ("resource curse") and (ii) the necessity of bubbles is less clear-cut.
In our paper from 1985 we have constructed two integrals of the Riemann's function $Z^2(t)$ over two disconnected sets with asymptotically equal measures such that these two integrals differ by considerably big excess. In the present paper we use the formula for that excess to construct a new $ζ$-equivalent of the Fermat-Wiles theorem on a two-parametric set of lemniscates of Bernoulli.
Post-World War II , there was massive internal migration from rural to urban areas in Japan. The location of Sumo stables was concentrated in Tokyo. Hence, supply of Sumo wrestlers from rural areas to Tokyo was considered as migration. Using a panel dataset covering forty years, specifically 1946-1985, this study investigates how weather conditions and social networks influenced the labor supply of Sumo wrestlers. Major findings are; (1) inclemency of the weather in local areas increased supply of Sumo wrestlers in the period 1946-1965, (2) the effect of the bad weather conditions is greater in the locality where large number of Sumo wrestlers were supplied in the pre-war period, (3) neither the occurrence of bad weather conditions nor their interactions with sumo-wrestlers influenced the supply of Sumo wrestlers in the period 1966-1985. These findings imply that the negative shock of bad weather conditions on agriculture in the rural areas incentivized young individuals to be apprenticed in Sumo stables in Tokyo. This paper is essentially a verbatim reconstruction of lectures that I gave at the Los Alamos School on Relativistic Dynamics and Quark Nuclear Physics in 1985. They were published in the school proceedings, but the book is not widely available. The Los Alamos School took place at the height of the first wave of interest in the quark substructure of nuclei, stimulated by the 1983 discovery of the EMC Effect. Interest in this subject has been increasing for years and the prospect of a dedicated Electron Ion Collider within the decade guarantees even greater attention to quarks and gluons in nuclei among both theorists and experimentalists. Recently, to my surprise, I learned that copies of my old lectures have been circulating and been found useful by the relatively few people who know about them. The are, of course, dated: experiments have far outstripped what was available 37 years ago and theory has progressed too. A theoretical light-curve model of the 1985 outburst of RS Ophiuchi is presented based on a thermonuclear runaway (TNR) model. The system consists of a very massive white dwarf (WD) with an accretion disk (ACDK) and a red giant (RG). The early phase of the V light curve is well reproduced only by the bloated WD photosphere of the TNR model on a 1.35 +/- 0.01 M_sun WD while the later phase is dominated both by the irradiated ACDK and by the irradiated RG underfilling the inner critical Roche lobe. The UV light curve is also well reproduced by the same model with the distance of 0.6 kpc to RS Oph. The envelope mass at the optical peak is estimated to be 2 x 10^{-6} M_sun, indicating a rather high mass accretion rate of 1.2 x 10^{-7} M_sun yr^{-1} between the 1967 and the 1985 outbursts. About 90% of the envelope mass is blown off in the outburst wind while the residual 10% (2 x 10^{-7} M_sun) has been left and added to the helium layer of the WD. The net increasing rate of the WD mass is 1.2 x 10^{-8} M_sun yr^{-1}. Thus, RS Oph is certainly a strong candidate for a Type Ia supernova progenitor.
The astronomical results contained in this publication represent a continuation of previous work of the United States Naval Observatory Six-inch and Seven-inch transit circles. The results are also the last from United States Naval Observatory transit circles, since those instruments are no longer in service. For the W1J00, we present the results of observations made with the Six-inch Transit Circle in Washington, D.C., between September 1977 and July 1982. The catalog, called W1J00, contains mean positions of 7267 stars, all but five are north of -30 degrees declination, and 4383 observations of solar system objects. Positions of stars are for mean epoch of observation, on equator and equinox J2000.0. Positions of solar system objects are apparent places. Error estimates are about 100 mas per coordinate for the majority of stars. For the W2J00, we present the results of observations made with the Six-inch Transit Circle in Washington, D.C. and the Seven-inch Transit Circle at the Black Birch station near Blenheim, New Zealand between April 1985 and February 1996. A semantics for quantified modal logic is presented that is based on Kleene's notion of realizability. This semantics generalizes Flagg's 1985 construction of a model of a modal version of Church's Thesis and first-order arithmetic. While the bulk of the paper is devoted to developing the details of the semantics, to illustrate the scope of this approach, we show that the construction produces (i) a model of a modal version of Church's Thesis and a variant of a modal set theory due to Goodman and Scedrov, (ii) a model of a modal version of Troelstra's generalized continuity principle together with a fragment of second-order arithmetic, and (iii) a model based on Scott's graph model (for the untyped lambda calculus) which witnesses the failure of the stability of non-identity.
The planets Uranus and Neptune with small apparent diameters are primary calibration standards. We investigate their variability at ~90 GHz using archived data taken at the IRAM 30m telescope during the 20 years period 1985 to 2005. We calibrate the planetary observations against non-variable secondary standards (NGC7027, NGC7538, W3OH, K3-50A) observed almost simultaneously. Between 1985 and 2005, the viewing angle of Uranus changed from south-pole to equatorial. We find that the disk brightness temperature declines by almost 10% (~2sigma) over this time span indicating that the south-pole region is significantly brighter than average. Our finding is consistent with recent long-term radio observations at 8.6 GHz by Klein & Hofstadter (2006). Both data sets do moreover show a rapid decrease of the Uranus brightness temperature during the year 1993, indicating a temporal, planetary scale change. We do not find indications for a variation of Neptune's brightness temperature at the 8% level. If Uranus is to be used as calibration source, and if accuracies better than 10% are required, the Uranus sub-earth point latitude needs to be taken into account.

We present new analyses of the photometric lightcurve of Comet 1P/Halley during its 1985/86 apparition. As part of a world-wide campaign coordinated by the International Halley Watch (IHW), narrowband photometry was obtained with telescopes at 18 observatories. Following submissions to and basic reductions by the Photometry and Polarimetry Network of the IHW, we computed production rates and created composite lightcurves for each species. These were used to measure how the apparent rotational period (~7.35 day), along with its shape, evolved with time during the apparition. The lightcurve shape systematically varied from double-peaked to triple-peaked and back again every 8-9 weeks, due to Halley's non-principal axis (complex) rotation and the associated component periods. Unexpectedly, we found a phase shift of one-half cycle also took place during this interval, and therefore the actual beat frequency between the component periods is twice this interval or 16-18 weeks. Preliminary modeling suggests that a single source might produce the entire post-perihelion lightcurve variability and associated evolution. This article is the first bibliometric analysis of the 708 lectures published by The Librarians and Archivists National Congress between 1985 and 2012, having been developed markers for production, productivity, institutional origin and thematic analysis, in a quantitative, relational and diachronic perspective. Its results show a dynamic congress, essentially national and professional, with a strong majority of individual authorships, even with the recent growth of the ratio of collaborations. In its thematic approach, emphasis is given to public services of information, with the greatest focus being on libraries, while still giving relevance to reflections on professional and academic training in the area of Information Sciences, and also following the most recent technological developments.
We examine the AAVSO light curve of U Geminorum from 1908 to 2002, with particular focus on the October 1985 outburst. This outburst was longer than any other seen in U Gem by about a factor of 2, and appears to be unique among all dwarf nova outbursts seen in systems with orbital periods longer than 3 hr in that one can measure the decay time scale during the initial slow decay. This rate is ~26+-6 d/mag. Using estimates of the rate of accretion during outburst taken from Froning et al., one can show that ~1e24 g of gas was accreted onto the white dwarf during the outburst. When coupled with the viscous time inferred from the (short orbital period) SU UMa stars, the U Gem viscous time scale lends support to the standard model in which the decays in dwarf novae can either be viscous or thermal, with the ratio between them being roughly h/r where h is the vertical pressure scale height in the disk.

The idea of diffractive processes with a hard scale involved, to resolve the underlying parton dynamics, was presented at the first Blois conference in 1985 and experimentally verified a few years later. Today hard diffraction is an active research field with high-quality data and new theoretical models. The trend from Regge-based pomeron models to QCD-based parton level models has given insights on QCD dynamics involving perturbative gluon exchange mechanisms, including the predicted BFKL-dynamics, as well as novel ideas on non-perturbative colour fields and their interactions.
We prove that the maximal dimension $d_N$ of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group $S_N$ satisfies $$d_N=\sqrt{N!} \, e^{-(\mathfrak{d}+o(1))\sqrt{N} }, \quad N\to \infty,$$ for some constant $\mathfrak{d}>0$. This answers a question raised by Vershik--Kerov in 1985.
The 1985 M8.1 Mexico City earthquake marked a turning point in Mexican earthquake engineering, underscoring the influence of soft soils, subsidence, and site effects on seismic performance in the Valley of Mexico. In the four decades since, both research and engineering practice have evolved significantly, shaped by subsequent events such as the 2017 M7.1 Puebla-Morelos earthquake. Integrating observations made during the Learning from Earthquakes Travel Study program and desk study findings, this paper summarizes the progression of geotechnical knowledge and practice in Mexico City, through the lessons of 1985 and 2017, through the lens of site effects, soil zonation, subsidence and emerging directions and future trends.
Tirole (1985) studied an overlapping generations model with capital accumulation and showed that the emergence of asset bubbles solves the capital over-accumulation problem. His Proposition 1(c) claims that if the dividend growth rate is above the bubbleless interest rate (the steady-state interest rate in the economy without the asset) but below the population growth rate, then bubbles are necessary in the sense that there exists no bubbleless equilibrium but there exists a unique bubbly equilibrium. We show that this result (as stated) is incorrect by presenting an example economy that satisfies all assumptions of Proposition 1(c) but its unique equilibrium is bubbleless. We also restore Proposition 1(c) under the additional assumptions that initial capital is sufficiently large and dividends are sufficiently small. We show through examples that these conditions are essential.
The show that the upper-left-corner problem and upper-right-corner problem for matrix groups with rational entries are undecidable. To reach this aim, we answer a question of Dixon from 1985 by proving the undecidability of the stabilizer problem for matrix groups.
We give an explicit counterexample to the Bunkbed Conjecture introduced by Kasteleyn in 1985. The counterexample is given by a planar graph on $7222$ vertices, and is built on the recent work of Hollom (2024).
