Quantum simulations of high-energy physics in $2+1$D can probe dynamical phenomena nonexistent in one spatial dimension and access regimes that are challenging for existing classical simulation methods. For string dynamics -- relevant to hadronization -- a plaquette term is required to realize genuine $2+1$D behavior, as it endows the gauge field with dynamics and enables the propagation of photon-like excitations. Here, we realize a U$(1)$ quantum link model of quantum electrodynamics in two spatial dimensions with a tunable plaquette term on a \texttt{Quantinuum System Model H2} quantum computer. We implement, to our knowledge, the largest quantum simulation of string-breaking dynamics reported to date, on a $5 \times 4$ matter-site square lattice using $51$ qubits. The simulation uses a shallow circuit design with a two-qubit gate depth of $28$ per Trotter step and up to $1540$ entangling gates. Starting from far-from-equilibrium string configurations, we measure the probability for the string to propagate within the lattice plane and find signatures of genuine $2+1$D dynamics only when the plaquette term is present. In a resonant regime, we observe the annihilation of string se
The evidence for string/string-duality can be extended from the matching of the vector couplings to gravitational couplings. In this note this is shown in the rank three example, the closest stringy analog of the Seiberg/Witten-setup, which is related to the Calabi-Yau $WP^4_{1,1,2,2,6}(12)$. I provide an exact analytical verification of a relation checked by coefficient comparison to fourth order by Kaplunovsky, Louis and Theisen.
We study the wave equation for a string with stiffness. We solve the equation and provide a uniqueness theorem with suitable boundary conditions. For a pinned string we compute the spectrum, which is slightly inharmonic. Therefore, the widespread scale of 12 equal divisions of the just octave is not the best choice to tune instruments like the piano. Basing on the theory of dissonance, we provide a way to tune the piano in order to improve its consonance. A good solution is obtained by tuning a note and its fifth by minimizing their beats.
In this paper, string C-groups of all ranks $3 \leq r \leq \frac{n}{2}$ are provided for each alternating group $A_n$, $n \geq 12$. As the string C-group representations of $A_n$ have also been classified for $n \leq 11$, and it is known that larger ranks are impossible, this paper provides the exact values of $n$ for which $A_n$ can be represented as a string C-group of a fixed rank.
We prove that for any integer $n\geq 12$, and for every $r$ in the interval $[3, \ldots, \lfloor (n-1)/2\rfloor]$, the group $A_n$ has a string C-group representation of rank $r$ therefore showing that the only alternating group whose set of ranks is not an interval is $A_{11}$.
We calculate the equation of state of a gas of strings at high density in a large toroidal universe, and use it to determine the cosmological evolution of background metric and dilaton fields in the entire large radius Hagedorn regime, (ln S)^{1/d} << R << S^{1/d} (with S the total entropy). The pressure in this regime is not vanishing but of O(1), while the equation of state is proportional to volume, which makes our solutions significantly different from previously published approximate solutions. For example, we are able to calculate the duration of the high-density "Hagedorn" phase, which increases exponentially with increasing entropy, S. We go on to discuss the difficulties of the scenario, quantifying the problems of establishing thermal equilibrium and producing a large but not too weakly-coupled universe.
We show how an effective field theory of long distance QCD, describing a dual superconductor, can be expressed as an effective string theory of superconducting vortices. We evaluate the semiclassical expansion of this effective string theory about a classical rotating string solution in any spacetime dimension D. We show that, after renormalization, the zero point energy of the string fluctuations remains finite when the masses of the quarks on the ends of the strings approach zero. For D = 26 the semiclassical energy spectrum of the rotating string formally coincides with that of the open string in classical Bosonic string theory. However, its physical origin is different. It is a semiclassical spectrum of an effective string theory valid only for large values of the angular momentum. For D = 4 the first semiclassical correction adds the constant 1/12 to the classical Regge formula for the angular momentum of mesons on the leading Regge trajectory. The excited vibrational modes of the rotating string give rise to daughter Regge trajectories determining the spectrum of hybrid mesons.
I review findings of various research groups regarding perturbative heterotic string model building in the last 12 months. Attention is given to recent studies of extra U(1)'s and local discrete symmetries (LDS's) in generic string models. Issues covered include the role of U(1)'s and LDS's in limiting proton decay, developments in classification of models containing anomalous U(1), and possible complications resulting from kinetic mixing between observable and hidden sector U(1)'s. Additionally, recent string-derived and string-inspired models are briefly reviewed. Talk Presented at SUSY '97.
We present a model based on the gauge group SU(2)$_L\times$SU(2)$_R\times$SU(4)$_C$ with gauge couplings that are found to be unified at a scale $M_G$ near the string unification scale. The model breaks to the minimal supersymmetric standard model at a scale $M_I\sim 10^{12}$ GeV, which is instrumental in producing a neutrino in a mass range that can serve as hot dark matter and this scale can also solve the strong CP problem via Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism with an invisible harmless invisible axion. We show how this model can accommodate low and high values of $\tanβ$ and ``exotic" representations that often occur in string derived models. We show that this model has lepton flavor violation which can lead to processes which are one or two orders of magnitude below the current experimental limits.
We use the crosscap constraint to construct open descendants of the 0B string compactified on $T^6 /Z_3$ and on $T^4/Z_2$ free of tachyons both in the closed and in the open unoriented sectors. In four dimensions the construction results in a Chan-Paton gauge group $U(8)\otimes U(12)\otimes U(12)$ with three generations of chiral fermions in the representations $(\overline{8},1,\overline{12}) +(8,12,1)+(1,\overline{66},1)+(1,1,66)$.
We evaluate gauge invariants, action and gauge invariant overlap, for numerical solutions which satisfy the "a-gauge" condition with various values of $a$ in cubic open bosonic string field theory. We use the level truncation approximation and an iterative procedure to construct numerical solutions in the twist even universal space. The resulting gauge invariants are numerically stable and almost equal to those of Schnabl's solution for tachyon condensation. Our result provides further evidence that these numerical and analytical solutions are gauge equivalent.
We examine whether a minimal string model possessing the same massless spectra as the MSSM can be obtained from $Z_4$, $Z_6$ and $Z_8$ orbifold constructions. Using an anomaly cancellation condition of the target space duality symmetry, we derive allowable values of a level $k_1$ of U(1)$_Y$ for the minimal string model on the orbifolds through computer analyses. We investigate threshold corrections of the gauge coupling constants of SU(3), SU(2) and U(1)$_Y$ and examine consistencies of the model with the LEP experiments. It is found that $Z_4$ and $Z_8$-II can not derive the minimal string model but $Z_6$-I, $Z_6$-II and $Z_8$-I are possible to derive it with $13/12 \leq k_1\leq 41/30$, $16/15\leq k_1\leq 17/12$ and $1\leq k_1\leq 41/21$ respectively. The minimum values of the moduli on unrotated planes are estimated within the ranges of the levels.
In a recent $\Z_{12-I}$ orbifold model, an approximate $Z_2$ symmetry which forbids the baryon number violating operators up to sufficiently high orders is found. The dimension-4 $ΔB e 0$ operators of the MSSM fields occur at dimension 10. The effective dimension-5 $ΔB e 0$ operators derived from these are harmless if some VEVs of neutral singlets are O(1/10) times the string scale. The main reason for forbidding these $ΔB e 0$ operators up to such a high order is the large order N=12 of $\Z_N$ since the $H$-momentum rule is $(-1,1,1)$ mod (12, 3, 12). For a lower order $N<12$, the $ΔB e 0$ operators would appear at lower dimensions.
The supersymmetric particle spectrum is calculated in type I string theories formulated as orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory. A string scale at an intermediate value of $10^{11}-10^{12}$ GeV is assumed and extra vector-like matter states are introduced to allow unification of gauge coupling constants to occur at this scale. The qualitative features of the spectrum are compared with Calabi-Yau compactification of the weakly coupled heterotic string and with the eleven dimensional supergravity limit of $M$-theory. Some striking differences are observed. Assuming that the lightest neutralino provides the dark matter in the universe, further constraints on the sparticle spectrum are obtained. Direct detection rates for dark matter are estimated.
ALP-photon couplings are modeled in large ensembles of string vacua and random matrix theories. In all cases, the effective coupling increases polynomially in the number of ALPs, of which hundreds or thousands are expected in the string ensembles, many of which are ultralight. The expected value of the couplings $g_{aγγ}\simeq 10^{-12}\text{GeV}^{-1} - 10^{-10}\text{GeV}^{-1}$ provide viable targets for future x-ray telescopes and axion helioscopes, and in some cases are already in tension with existing data.
This paper comprises the written version of the lectures on string theory delivered at the 31st British Universities Summer School on Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics which was held in Manchester, England, August 28 - September 12 2001.
In the axiverse scenario, a massive scalar field (string axion) forms a cloud around a rotating black hole (BH) by superradiant instability and emits continuous gravitational waves (GWs). We examine constraints on the string axion parameters that can be obtained from GW observations. If no signal is detected in a targeted search for GWs from Cygnus X-1 in the LIGO data, the decay constant $f_a$ must be smaller than the GUT scale in the mass range $1.1\times 10^{-12}\mathrm{eV}<μ<2.5\times 10^{-12}\mathrm{eV}$. Constraints from invisible isolated BHs are also discussed.
Starting from the type IIB string on the Z orbifold, we construct some chiral open-string vacua with N=1 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The Chan-Paton group depends on the (quantized) NS-NS antisymmetric tensor. The largest choice, SO(8)xSU(12)xU(1), has an anomalous U(1) factor whose gauge boson acquires a mass of the order of the string scale. The corresponding open-string spectrum comprises only Neumann strings and includes three families of chiral multiplets in the (8,12*) + (1,66) representation. A comparison is drawn with a heterotic vacuum with non-standard embedding, and some properties of the low-energy effective field theory are discussed.
Cylindrically symmetric inhomogeneous string cosmological model of the universe in presence of electromagnetic field is investigated. We have assumed that F_{12} is the only non-vanishing component of electromagnetic field tensor F_{ij}. The Maxwell's equations show that F_{12} is the function of $x$ alone whereas the magnetic permeability is the function of x and t both. To get the deterministic solution, it has been assumed that the expansion ($θ$) in the model is proportional to the eigen value $σ^{1}_{1}$ of the shear tensor $σ^{i}_{j}$. Some physical and geometric prperties of the model are also discussed.
Soft supersymmetry breaking terms were recently derived for type IIB string flux compactifications with all moduli stabilised. Depending on the choice of the discrete input parameters of the compactification such as fluxes and ranks of hidden gauge groups, the string scale was found to have any value between the TeV and GUT scales. We study the phenomenological implications of these compactifications at low energy. Three realistic scenarios can be identified depending on whether the Standard Model lies on D3 or D7 branes and on the value of the string scale. For the MSSM on D7 branes and the string scale between 10^12 GeV and 10^17 GeV we find that the LSP is a neutralino, while for lower scales it is the stop. At the GUT scale the results of the fluxed MSSM are reproduced, but now with all moduli stabilised. For the MSSM on D3 branes we identify two realistic scenarios. The first one corresponds to an intermediate string scale version of split supersymmetry. The second is a stringy mSUGRA scenario. This requires tuning of the flux parameters to obtain the GUT scale. Phenomenological constraints from dark matter, (g-2)_mu and BR(b->s gamma) are considered for the three scenarios
